Wisdom 17

KING JAMES BIBLE	JERUSALEM
1 For great are thy judgments, and cannot be expressed: therefore unnurtured souls have erred.	1 Oui, tes jugements sont grands et inexplicables, c'est pourquoi des âmes sans instruction se sontégarées.
2 For when unrighteous men thought to oppress the holy nation; they being shut up in their houses, the prisoners of darkness, and fettered with the bonds of a long night, lay [there] exiled from the eternal providence.	2 Alors que des impies s'imaginaient tenir en leur pouvoir une nation sainte, devenus prisonniers desténèbres, dans les entraves d'une longue nuit, ils gisaient enfermés sous leurs toits, bannis de la providenceéternelle.
3 For while they supposed to lie hid in their secret sins, they were scattered under a dark veil of forgetfulness, being horribly astonished, and troubled with [strange] apparitions.	3 Alors qu'ils pensaient demeurer cachés avec leurs péchés secrets, sous le sombre voile de l'oubli,ils furent dispersés, en proie à de terribles frayeurs, épouvantés par des fantômes.
4 For neither might the corner that held them keep them from fear: but noises [as of waters] falling down sounded about them, and sad visions appeared unto them with heavy countenances.	4 Car le réduit qui les abritait ne les préservait pas de la peur; des bruits effrayants retentissaientautour d'eux, et des spectres lugubres, au visage morne, leur apparaissaient.
5 No power of the fire might give them light: neither could the bright flames of the stars endure to lighten that horrible night.	5 Aucun feu n'avait assez de force pour les éclairer, et l'éclat étincelant des étoiles ne parvenait pas àilluminer cette horrible nuit.
6 Only there appeared unto them a fire kindled of itself, very dreadful: for being much terrified, they thought the things which they saw to be worse than the sight they saw not.	6 Seule brillait pour eux une masse de feu qui s'allumait d'elle-même, semant la peur, et, terrifiés,une fois disparue cette vision, ils tenaient pour pire ce qu'ils venaient de voir.
7 As for the illusions of art magick, they were put down, and their vaunting in wisdom was reproved with disgrace.	7 Les artifices de l'art magique demeuraient impuissants, et sa prétention à l'intelligence étaithonteusement confondue;
8 For they, that promised to drive away terrors and troubles from a sick soul, were sick themselves of fear, worthy to be laughed at.	8 car ceux qui promettaient de bannir de l'âme malade les terreurs et les troubles étaient eux-mêmesmalades d'une peur ridicule.
9 For though no terrible thing did fear them; yet being scared with beasts that passed by, and hissing of serpents,	9 Même si rien d'effrayant ne leur faisait peur, les passages de bestioles et les sifflements de reptilesles frappaient de panique,
10 They died for fear, denying that they saw the air, which could of no side be avoided.	10 ils périssaient, tremblants de frayeur, et refusant même de regarder cet air, que d'aucune manièreon ne peut fuir.
11 For wickedness, condemned by her own witness, is very timorous, and being pressed with conscience, always forecasteth grievous things.	11 Car la perversité s'avère singulièrement lâche et se condamne elle-même; pressée par laconscience, toujours elle grossit les difficultés.
12 For fear is nothing else but a betraying of the succours which reason offereth.	12 La peur en effet n'est rien d'autre que la défaillance des secours de la réflexion;
13 And the expectation from within, being less, counteth the ignorance more than the cause which bringeth the torment.	13 moins on compte intérieurement sur eux, plus on trouve grave d'ignorer la cause qui provoque letourment.
14 But they sleeping the same sleep that night, which was indeed intolerable, and which came upon them out of the bottoms of inevitable hell,	14 Pour eux, durant cette nuit vraiment impuissante, sortie des profondeurs de l'Hadès impuissant,endormis d'un même sommeil,
15 Were partly vexed with monstrous apparitions, and partly fainted, their heart failing them: for a sudden fear, and not looked for, came upon them.	15 ils étaient tantôt poursuivis par des spectres monstrueux, tantôt paralysés par la défaillance deleur âme; car une peur subite et inattendue les avait envahis.
16 So then whosoever there fell down was straitly kept, shut up in a prison without iron bars,	16 Ainsi encore, celui qui tombait là, quel qu'il fût, se trouvait emprisonné, enfermé dans cette geôlesans verrous.
17 For whether he were husbandman, or shepherd, or a labourer in the field, he was overtaken, and endured that necessity, which could not be avoided: for they were all bound with one chain of darkness.	17 Qu'on fût laboureur ou berger, ou qu'on fût occupé à des travaux dans le désert, surpris, onsubissait l'inéluctable nécessité;
18 Whether it were a whistling wind, or a melodious noise of birds among the spreading branches, or a pleasing fall of water running violently,	18 car tous avaient été liés par une même chaîne de ténèbres. Le vent qui siffle, le chant mélodieuxdes oiseaux dans les rameaux touffus, le bruit cadencé d'une eau coulant avec violence,
19 Or a terrible sound of stones cast down, or a running that could not be seen of skipping beasts, or a roaring voice of most savage wild beasts, or a rebounding echo from the hollow mountains; these things made them to swoon for fear.	19 le rude fracas des pierres dégringolant, la course invisible d'animaux bondissants, le rugissementdes bêtes les plus sauvages, l'écho se répercutant au creux des montagnes, tout les terrorisait et les paralysait.
20 For the whole world shined with clear light, and none were hindered in their labour:	20 Car le monde entier était éclairé par une lumière étincelante et vaquait librement à ses travaux;
21 Over them only was spread an heavy night, an image of that darkness which should afterward receive them: but yet were they unto themselves more grievous than the darkness.	21 sur eux seuls s'étendait une pesante nuit, image des ténèbres qui devaient les recevoir. Mais ilsétaient à eux-mêmes plus pesants que les ténèbres.
