1 I said in mine heart, Go to now, I will prove thee with mirth, therefore enjoy pleasure: and, behold, this also is vanity.	1 Dissi allora a me stesso: "Suvvia! Ti voglio far fare la prova dell'allegria: prova i piaceri!". Ma mi accorsi che anche questa era vanità;
2 I said of laughter, It is mad: and of mirth, What doeth it?	2 al riso, infatti, dissi: "Stolto", e all'allegria: "A che serve?".
3 I sought in mine heart to give myself unto wine, yet acquainting mine heart with wisdom; and to lay hold on folly, till I might see what was that good for the sons of men, which they should do under the heaven all the days of their life.	3 Decisi ancora di darmi al vino, in questa mia ricerca della sapienza, e di far mia tutta la follia, finché non avessi capito quale bene ci sia per gli uomini, un bene che essi possano realizzare nei giorni contati della loro vita.
4 I made me great works; I builded me houses; I planted me vineyards:	4 Feci grandi lavori: mi costruii case e mi piantai vigne,
5 I made me gardens and orchards, and I planted trees in them of all kind of fruits:	5 mi feci giardini e parchi piantandovi alberi fruttiferi di ogni specie.
6 I made me pools of water, to water therewith the wood that bringeth forth trees:	6 Mi costruii cisterne piene d'acqua, per poter irrigare tutti quegli alberi.
7 I got me servants and maidens, and had servants born in my house; also I had great possessions of great and small cattle above all that were in Jerusalem before me:	7 Mi comprai schiavi e schiave, ebbi servi nati in casa e possedetti più armenti e greggi di quanti furono prima di me in Gerusalemme.
8 I gathered me also silver and gold, and the peculiar treasure of kings and of the provinces: I gat me men singers and women singers, and the delights of the sons of men, as musical instruments, and that of all sorts.	8 Ammassai anche argento, oro, e tesori di re e di province. Mi procurai cantori e cantatrici e, delizia dell'uomo, principesse in gran numero.
9 So I was great, and increased more than all that were before me in Jerusalem: also my wisdom remained with me.	9 Così divenni più grande e più potente di quanti furono in Gerusalemme prima di me, e avevo sempre ben salda la mia sapienza.
10 And whatsoever mine eyes desired I kept not from them, I withheld not my heart from any joy; for my heart rejoiced in all my labour: and this was my portion of all my labour.	10 Tutto quanto i miei occhi chiedevano, non l'ho negato loro, non ho rifiutato al mio cuore nessun piacere. Il fatto che il mio cuore fosse contento di ogni mia fatica questo era il solo guadagno che mi veniva d'ogni mia fatica.
11 Then I looked on all the works that my hands had wrought, and on the labour that I had laboured to do: and, behold, all was vanity and vexation of spirit, and there was no profit under the sun.	11 Mi volsi a considerare tutte le opere che le mie mani avevano fatto e la fatica che avevo sopportato a compierle, e mi convinsi che tutto è vanità e agire senza senso e che non c'è vantaggio sotto il sole.
12 And I turned myself to behold wisdom, and madness, and folly: for what can the man do that cometh after the king? even that which hath been already done.	12 Mi volsi a indagare sulla sapienza e sulla scienza, sulla follia e sulla stoltezza, pensando: "Che cosa farà l'uomo che mi succederà?". Farà ciò che è già stato fatto.
13 Then I saw that wisdom excelleth folly, as far as light excelleth darkness.	13 Mi resi conto che la sapienza è superiore alla stoltezza quanto la luce alle tenebre:
14 The wise man's eyes are in his head; but the fool walketh in darkness: and I myself perceived also that one event happeneth to them all.	14 il sapiente ha gli occhi in testa e lo stolto cammina nelle tenebre. Ma subito notai che la stessa sorte tocca a entrambi.
15 Then said I in my heart, As it happeneth to the fool, so it happeneth even to me; and why was I then more wise? Then I said in my heart, that this also is vanity.	15 Pensai fra me: "Toccherà anche a me la stessa sorte dello stolto; e a che pro, allora, sono diventato tanto sapiente?". Così conclusi fra me che anche questo è un'assurdità.
16 For there is no remembrance of the wise more than of the fool for ever; seeing that which now is in the days to come shall all be forgotten. And how dieth the wise man? as the fool.	16 Infatti la memoria del sapiente scompare come quella dello stolto, per sempre; ben presto tutto è dimenticato. E come muore anche il sapiente insieme allo stolto!
17 Therefore I hated life; because the work that is wrought under the sun is grievous unto me: for all is vanity and vexation of spirit.	17 Presi in odio la vita, perché per me era male tutto ciò che si fa sotto il sole. Tutto è vanità e agire senza senso.
18 Yea, I hated all my labour which I had taken under the sun: because I should leave it unto the man that shall be after me.	18 Ho preso a odiare tutta la fatica che sopporto sotto il sole, perché devo lasciar tutto all'uomo che mi succederà.
19 And who knoweth whether he shall be a wise man or a fool? yet shall he have rule over all my labour wherein I have laboured, and wherein I have shewed myself wise under the sun. This is also vanity.	19 E chi sa se sarà sapiente o stolto? Ma è certo che sarà suo tutto ciò che ho fatto con la mia fatica e con la mia sapienza sotto il sole. Anche questo è vanità.
20 Therefore I went about to cause my heart to despair of all the labour which I took under the sun.	20 Allora la disperazione ha invaso il mio cuore, pensando a tutta la fatica che ho sopportato sotto il sole,
21 For there is a man whose labour is in wisdom, and in knowledge, and in equity; yet to a man that hath not laboured therein shall he leave it for his portion. This also is vanity and a great evil.	21 perché c'è un uomo che si è affaticato con sapienza, con scienza e con impegno e deve lasciare ciò che è suo a un altro che non ci ha messo nessuna fatica. Anche questo è vanità e male grande.
22 For what hath man of all his labour, and of the vexation of his heart, wherein he hath laboured under the sun?	22 Infatti che cosa rimane all'uomo in tutta la sua fatica e nell'affanno del suo cuore, nel quale si è affaticato sotto il sole?
23 For all his days are sorrows, and his travail grief; yea, his heart taketh not rest in the night. This is also vanity.	23 Per tutti i giorni della sua vita, il suo lavoro è dolore e tristezza. Il suo cuore non riposa nemmeno di notte. Anche questo è vanità.
24 There is nothing better for a man, than that he should eat and drink, and that he should make his soul enjoy good in his labour. This also I saw, that it was from the hand of God.	24 Non c'è cosa buona per l'uomo se non mangiare e bere e godere il successo delle proprie fatiche. E ho anche capito che questo viene dalla mano di Dio.
25 For who can eat, or who else can hasten hereunto, more than I?	25 Chi infatti può mangiare e godere senza di lui?
26 For God giveth to a man that is good in his sight wisdom, and knowledge, and joy: but to the sinner he giveth travail, to gather and to heap up, that he may give to him that is good before God. This also is vanity and vexation of spirit.	26 All'uomo che gli è gradito concede sapienza, scienza e gioia; e al peccatore dà l'affanno di raccogliere e ammucchiare per poi lasciare tutto a chi è gradito a Dio. Anche questo è vanità e occupazione senza senso.
