1 But now they that are younger than I have me in derision, whose fathers I would have disdained to have set with the dogs of my flock.	1 Ma ora fanno beffe di me li più giovani di tempo, i padri de' quali io non degnava di porre colli cani della mia gregge;
2 Yea, whereto might the strength of their hands profit me, in whom old age was perished?	2 de' quali la virtù delle loro mani era a me per nulla, e di quella vita pensavano essere non degni;
3 For want and famine they were solitary; fleeing into the wilderness in former time desolate and waste.	3 sterili per povertade e per fame, i quali rodevano nella solitudine, straziati per la sozzezza e per miseria;
4 Who cut up mallows by the bushes, and juniper roots for their meat.	4 e mangiavano l' erbe e le corteccie degli arbori; e le radici delli ginepri erano loro cibo.
5 They were driven forth from among men, (they cried after them as after a thief;)	5 I quali delle valli tagliavano queste cose: e conciosia cosa che [le] avessono trovate, a quelle con rumore correvano.
6 To dwell in the clifts of the valleys, in caves of the earth, and in the rocks.	6 Nelli deserti abitavano delli torrenti, e nelle caverne della terra, ovvero sopra le spine.
7 Among the bushes they brayed; under the nettles they were gathered together.	7 I quali a questa medesima cosa si dilettavano, e così si computavano d' essere assai delicati;
8 They were children of fools, yea, children of base men: they were viler than the earth.	8 (Mali) figliuoli delli sciocchi e delli non nobili, i quali non erano arditi di apparire nella terra.
9 And now am I their song, yea, I am their byword.	9 Ora nello loro canto sono vôlto, e fatto sono a loro in proverbio.
10 They abhor me, they flee far from me, and spare not to spit in my face.	10 Abbòminano me, e fuggonsi da lunga da me, e non si vergognano di sputarmi nella mia faccia.
11 Because he hath loosed my cord, and afflicted me, they have also let loose the bridle before me.	11 Lo carcasso suo aperse, e afflissemi; e lo freno pose nella mia bocca.
12 Upon my right hand rise the youth; they push away my feet, and they raise up against me the ways of their destruction.	12 Certo alla dritta parte dell' oriente le mie miserie si dirizzarono; li miei piedi sovvertirono e oppressono, quasi come onde di mare, colle sue vie.
13 They mar my path, they set forward my calamity, they have no helper.	13 Dissiparono gli andamenti miei, e hannomi insidiato; soprastetteno, e non fu chi mi desse aiuto.
14 They came upon me as a wide breaking in of waters: in the desolation they rolled themselves upon me.	14 Quasi come rotto lo muro e aperta la porta, rovinarono sopra me, e rivolti sono alle mie miserie.
15 Terrors are turned upon me: they pursue my soul as the wind: and my welfare passeth away as a cloud.	15 Ritornato sono in nulla; portonne come vento lo mio desiderio; e sì come nuvola trapassò la mia salute.
16 And now my soul is poured out upon me; the days of affliction have taken hold upon me.	16 Ma ora in me medesimo marcisce l'anima mia, e possiede me lo dì della afflizione.
17 My bones are pierced in me in the night season: and my sinews take no rest.	17 Nella notte la bocca mia è forata colli dolori; e coloro che mangiano me, non dormono.
18 By the great force of my disease is my garment changed: it bindeth me about as the collar of my coat.	18 Nella moltitudine loro si consuma lo mio vestimento, e quasi come lo cappuccio della tunica (che s'intornia al collo), così cinsono me.
19 He hath cast me into the mire, and I am become like dust and ashes.	19 Assomigliato sono al fango, e alla favilla e alla cenere.
20 I cry unto thee, and thou dost not hear me: I stand up, and thou regardest me not.	20 Chiamo a te, e non esaudisci me; io sto, e non mi ragguardi.
21 Thou art become cruel to me: with thy strong hand thou opposest thyself against me.	21 E mutato se' a me in crudele, e avversasti me nella durezza della tua mano.
22 Thou liftest me up to the wind; thou causest me to ride upon it, and dissolvest my substance.	22 Levasti me, e sì come ponente sopra lo vento gettasti a terra me molto.
23 For I know that thou wilt bring me to death, and to the house appointed for all living.	23 E (sopra ciò) io so che tu mi darai la morte, dove ordinata è la casa a ciascheduno vivente.
24 Howbeit he will not stretch out his hand to the grave, though they cry in his destruction.	24 Ma pertanto alla consumazione loro [non] metterai la tua mano; se elli scorreranno, tu medesimo li salverai.
25 Did not I weep for him that was in trouble? was not my soul grieved for the poor?	25 Di qui adietro io piagnea già sopra colui ch' era tormentato, e avea compassione l'anima mia al povero.
26 When I looked for good, then evil came unto me: and when I waited for light, there came darkness.	26 Aspettava li beni, e vennero a me li mali; aspettava la luce, e scorsono le tenebre.
27 My bowels boiled, and rested not: the days of affliction prevented me.	27 Le mie cose dentro bollirono senza riposo alcuno; sopravennero a me li dì dell' afflizioue.
28 I went mourning without the sun: I stood up, and I cried in the congregation.	28 Piangendo andava, senza furore; levandomi, nella turba chiamai.
29 I am a brother to dragons, and a companion to owls.	29 Fui io fratello delli dragoni, e compagno delle distruzioni.
30 My skin is black upon me, and my bones are burned with heat.	30 La mia cotica annegrita è sopra me; l'ossa mie si seccano per caldo.
31 My harp also is turned to mourning, and my organ into the voice of them that weep.	31 Tornata è in pianto la mia cetera, e l' organo mio nella voce delli piagnenti.
