KING JAMES BIBLE	JERUSALEM
1 This Simon now, of whom we spake afore, having been a betrayer of the money, and of his country, slandered Onias, as if he ha terrified Heliodorus, and been the worker of these evils.	1 Le susdit Simon, passé dénonciateur du trésor et de la patrie, calomniait Onias comme si cedernier avait fait assaillir Héliodore et avait été l'artisan de ce malheur.
2 Thus was he bold to call him a traitor, that had deserved well of the city, and tendered his own nation, and was so zealous of the laws.	2 Le bienfaiteur de la cité, le protecteur de ses frères de race, le zélé observateur des lois, il osaiten faire un ennemi de la chose publique.
3 But when their hatred went so far, that by one of Simon's faction murders were committed,	3 Cette haine grandit au point que des meurtres furent commis par des affidés de Simon.
4 Onias seeing the danger of this contention, and that Apollonius, as being the governor of Celosyria and Phenice, did rage, and increase Simon's malice,	4 Considérant combien une telle rivalité était fâcheuse, et qu'Apollonius, fils de Ménesthée,stratège de Coelé-Syrie et Phénicie, ne faisait qu'accroître la méchanceté de Simon,
5 He went to the king, not to be an accuser of his countrymen, but seeking the good of all, both publick and private:	5 Onias se transporta chez le roi, non pour être l'accusateur de ses concitoyens, mais ayant envue l'intérêt général et particulier de tout le peuple.
6 For he saw that it was impossible that the state should continue quiet, and Simon leave his folly, unless the king did look thereunto.	6 Il voyait bien en effet que, sans une intervention royale, il était impossible d'obtenir désormaisla paix publique, et que Simon ne mettrait pas un terme à sa folie.
7 But after the death of Seleucus, when Antiochus, called Epiphanes, took the kingdom, Jason the brother of Onias laboured underhand to be high priest,	7 Séleucus ayant quitté cette vie et Antiochus, surnommé Epiphane, lui ayant succédé, Jason,frère d'Onias, usurpa le pontificat:
8 Promising unto the king by intercession three hundred and threescore talents of silver, and of another revenue eighty talents:	8 il promit au roi, au cours d'une entrevue, 360 talents d'argent et 80 talents à prélever surquelque autre revenu.
9 Beside this, he promised to assign an hundred and fifty more, if he might have licence to set him up a place for exercise, and for the training up of youth in the fashions of the heathen, and to write them of Jerusalem by the name of Antiochians.	9 Il s'engageait en outre à payer 150 autres talents si le roi lui donnait pouvoir d'établir ungymnase et une éphébie et de dresser la liste des Antiochéens de Jérusalem.
10 Which when the king had granted, and he had gotten into his hand the rule he forthwith brought his own nation to Greekish fashion.	10 Le roi ayant consenti, Jason, dès qu'il eut saisi le pouvoir, amena ses frères de race à lapratique de la vie grecque.
11 And the royal privileges granted of special favour to the Jews by the means of John the father of Eupolemus, who went ambassador to Rome for amity and aid, he took away; and putting down the governments which were according to the law, he brought up new customs against the law:	11 Il supprima les franchises que les rois, par philanthropie, avaient accordées aux Juifs grâce àl'entremise de Jean, père de cet Eupolème qui sera envoyé en ambassade pour conclure un traité d'amitié etd'alliance avec les Romains; détruisant les institutions légitimes, Jason inaugura des usages contraires à la Loi.
12 For he built gladly a place of exercise under the tower itself, and brought the chief young men under his subjection, and made them wear a hat.	12 Il se fit en effet un plaisir de fonder un gymnase au pied même de l'acropole, et il conduisitles meilleurs des éphèbes sous le pétase.
13 Now such was the height of Greek fashions, and increase of heathenish manners, through the exceeding profaneness of Jason, that ungodly wretch, and no high priest;	13 L'hellénisme atteignit une telle vigueur et la mode étrangère un tel degré, par suite del'excessive perversité de Jason impie et pas du tout pontife,
14 That the priests had no courage to serve any more at the altar, but despising the temple, and neglecting the sacrifices, hastened to be partakers of the unlawful allowance in the place of exercise, after the game of Discus called them forth;	14 que les prêtres ne montraient plus aucun zèle pour le service de l'autel, mais que, méprisant leTemple et négligeant les sacrifices, ils se hâtaient de prendre part, dès l'appel du gong, à la distribution, prohibéepar la Loi, de l'huile dans la palestre;
15 Not setting by the honours of their fathers, but liking the glory of the Grecians best of all.	15 ne faisant aucun cas des honneurs de leur patrie, ils estimaient au plus haut point les gloireshelléniques.
16 By reason whereof sore calamity came upon them: for they had them to be their enemies and avengers, whose custom they followed so earnestly, and unto whom they desired to be like in all things.	16 C'est bien pour ces raisons qu'ils se trouvèrent ensuite dans des situations pénibles, et qu'enceux-là mêmes dont ils cherchaient à copier les façons de vivre et auxquels ils voulaient ressembler en tout, ilsrencontrèrent des ennemis et des bourreaux.
17 For it is not a light thing to do wickedly against the laws of God: but the time following shall declare these things.	17 On ne viole pas impunément les lois divines, c'est ce que démontrera la période suivante.
18 Now when the game that was used every faith year was kept at Tyrus, the king being present,	18 Comme on célébrait à Tyr les jeux quadriennaux en présence du roi,
19 This ungracious Jason sent special messengers from Jerusalem, who were Antiochians, to carry three hundred drachms of silver to the sacrifice of Hercules, which even the bearers thereof thought fit not to bestow upon the sacrifice, because it was not convenient, but to be reserved for other charges.	19 l'abject Jason envoya des ambassadeurs, à titre d'Antiochéens de Jérusalem, portant avec eux300 drachmes d'argent pour le sacrifice à Héraclès. Mais ceux-là mêmes qui les portaient jugèrent qu'il neconvenait pas de les affecter au sacrifice et qu'elles seraient réservées à une autre dépense.
20 This money then, in regard of the sender, was appointed to Hercules' sacrifice; but because of the bearers thereof, it was employed to the making of gallies.	20 Ainsi, l'argent destiné au sacrifice d'Héraclès par celui qui l'envoyait fut affecté, à cause deceux qui l'apportaient, à la construction des trirèmes.
21 Now when Apollonius the son of Menestheus was sent into Egypt for the coronation of king Ptolemeus Philometor, Antiochus, understanding him not to be well affected to his affairs, provided for his own safety: whereupon he came to Joppa, and from thence to Jerusalem:	21 Apollonius, fils de Ménesthée, avait été envoyé en Egypte pour assister aux noces du roiPhilométor. Antiochus apprit que ce dernier était devenu hostile à ses affaires et se préoccupa de sa propresécurité: c'est ce qui l'amena à Joppé, d'où il se rendit à Jérusalem.
22 Where he was honourably received of Jason, and of the city, and was brought in with torch alight, and with great shoutings: and so afterward went with his host unto Phenice.	22 Grandement reçu par Jason et par la ville, il fut introduit à la lumière des flambeaux et aumilieu des acclamations. A la suite de quoi, il emmena l'armée camper en Phénicie.
23 Three years afterward Jason sent Menelans, the aforesaid Simon's brother, to bear the money unto the king, and to put him in mind of certain necessary matters.	23 Au bout de trois ans, Jason envoya Ménélas, frère du Simon signalé plus haut, porter l'argentau roi et mener à bien les négociations des affaires urgentes.
24 But he being brought to the presence of the king, when he had magnified him for the glorious appearance of his power, got the priesthood to himself, offering more than Jason by three hundred talents of silver.	24 Ménélas, s'étant fait recommander au roi et l'ayant abordé avec les manières d'un personnagede marque, se fit attribuer le pontificat à lui-même, offrant 300 talents d'argent de plus que n'avait offert Jason.
25 So he came with the king's mandate, bringing nothing worthy the high priesthood, but having the fury of a cruel tyrant, and the rage of a savage beast.	25 Muni des lettres royales d'investiture, il s'en revint, n'ayant rien qui fût digne de la grand-prêtrise mais n'apportant que les fureurs d'un tyran cruel et les rages d'une bête sauvage.
26 Then Jason, who had undermined his own brother, being undermined by another, was compelled to flee into the country of the Ammonites.	26 Ainsi Jason qui avait supplanté son propre frère, supplanté à son tour par un autre, dut gagneren fugitif l'Ammanitide.
27 So Menelans got the principality: but as for the money that he had promised unto the king, he took no good order for it, albeit Sostratis the ruler of the castle required it:	27 Quant à Ménélas, il possédait sans doute le pouvoir, mais il ne versait rien au roi des sommesqu'il lui avait promises.
28 For unto him appertained the gathering of the customs. Wherefore they were both called before the king.	28 Sostrate cependant, préfet de l'acropole, lui présentait des réclamations, car c'est à lui querevenait la perception des impôts. Aussi bien tous les deux furent-ils convoqués par le roi.
29 Now Menelans left his brother Lysimachus in his stead in the priesthood; and Sostratus left Crates, who was governor of the Cyprians.	29 Tandis que Ménélas laissait pour le remplacer comme grand prêtre son propre frèreLysimaque, Sostrate laissait Kratès, le chef des Chypriotes.
30 While those things were in doing, they of Tarsus and Mallos made insurrection, because they were given to the king's concubine, called Antiochus.	30 Sur ces entrefaites, il arriva que les habitants de Tarse et de Mallos se révoltèrent parce queleurs villes avaient été données en présent à Antiochis, la concubine du roi.
31 Then came the king in all haste to appease matters, leaving Andronicus, a man in authority, for his deputy.	31 Le roi alla donc en hâte régler cette affaire, laissant pour le remplacer Andronique, l'un desgrands dignitaires.
32 Now Menelans, supposing that he had gotten a convenient time, stole certain vessels of gold out of the temple, and gave some of them to Andronicus, and some he sold into Tyrus and the cities round about.	32 Convaincu de saisir une occasion favorable, Ménélas déroba quelques vases d'or dusanctuaire, il en fit cadeau à Andronique et réussit à en vendre d'autres à Tyr et aux villes voisines.
33 Which when Onias knew of a surety, he reproved him, and withdrew himself into a sanctuary at Daphne, that lieth by Antiochia.	33 Devant l'évidence du fait, Onias lui adressa des reproches, après s'être retiré dans le lieuinviolable de Daphné voisine d'Antioche.
34 Wherefore Menelans, taking Andronicus apart, prayed, him to get Onias into his hands; who being persuaded thereunto, and coming to Onias in deceit, gave him his right hand with oaths; and though he were suspected by him, yet persuaded he him to come forth of the sanctuary: whom forthwith he shut up without regard of justice.	34 En conséquence Ménélas, prenant à part Andronique le pressait de supprimer Onias.Andronique vint donc trouver Onias: se fiant à la ruse et lui tendant la main droite avec serment, il le décida,sans toutefois dissiper tout soupçon, à sortir de son asile, et le mit à mort sur-le-champ sans tenir compte de lajustice.
35 For the which cause not only the Jews, but many also of other nations, took great indignation, and were much grieved for the unjust murder of the man.	35 Pour ce motif, non seulement les Juifs, mais aussi beaucoup de gens parmi les autres peuplesfurent indignés et trouvèrent intolérable le meurtre injuste de cet homme.
36 And when the king was come again from the places about Cilicia, the Jews that were in the city, and certain of the Greeks that abhorred the fact also, complained because Onias was slain without cause.	36 Lorsque le roi fut rentré des régions ciliciennes, les Juifs de la capitale et les Grecs quipartageaient leur haine de la violence vinrent le trouver au sujet du meurtre injustifié d'Onias.
37 Therefore Antiochus was heartily sorry, and moved to pity, and wept, because of the sober and modest behaviour of him that was dead.	37 Antiochus, contristé jusqu'au fond de l'âme et touché de compassion, versa des larmes ausouvenir de la prudence et de la modération du défunt.
38 And being kindled with anger, forthwith he took away Andronicus his purple, and rent off his clothes, and leading him through the whole city unto that very place, where he had committed impiety against Onias, there slew he the cursed murderer. Thus the Lord rewarded him his punishment, as he had deserved.	38 Enflammé d'indignation, il dépouilla immédiatement Andronique de la pourpre et déchira sesvêtements, puis l'ayant fait mener par toute la ville, il envoya hors de ce monde le meurtrier, à l'endroit même oùil avait exercé son impiété sur Onias, le Seigneur le frappant ainsi d'un juste châtiment.
39 Now when many sacrileges had been committed in the city by Lysimachus with the consent of Menelans, and the fruit thereof was spread abroad, the multitude gathered themselves together against Lysimachus, many vessels of gold being already carried away.	39 Or, un grand nombre de vols sacrilèges ayant été commis dans la ville par Lysimaqued'accord avec Ménélas, et le bruit s'en étant répandu au-dehors, le peuple s'ameuta contre Lysimaque, alors quebeaucoup d'objets d'or avaient déjà été dispersés.
40 Whereupon the common people rising, and being filled with rage, Lysimachus armed about three thousand men, and began first to offer violence; one Auranus being the leader, a man far gone in years, and no less in folly.	40 Comme la multitude s'était soulevée, débordante de colère, Lysimaque arma près de 3.000hommes et prit l'initiative des violences; marchait en tête un certain Auranos, homme avancé en âge, et nonmoins en folie.
41 They then seeing the attempt of Lysimachus, some of them caught stones, some clubs, others taking handfuls of dust, that was next at hand, cast them all together upon Lysimachus, and those that set upon them.	41 Prenant conscience de l'attaque de Lysimaque, les uns s'armaient de pierres, les autres degourdins, certains prenaient à pleines mains la cendre qui se trouvait là, et tous assaillirent pêle-mêle les gens deLysimaque.
42 Thus many of them they wounded, and some they struck to the ground, and all of them they forced to flee: but as for the churchrobber himself, him they killed beside the treasury.	42 Aussi bien leur firent-ils beaucoup de blessés et quelques morts; ils mirent le reste en fuite et,quant au voleur sacrilège, ils le massacrèrent près du Trésor.
43 Of these matters therefore there was an accusation laid against Menelans.	43 Sur ces faits un procès fut intenté à Ménélas.
44 Now when the king came to Tyrus, three men that were sent from the senate pleaded the cause before him:	44 Lorsque le roi vint à Tyr, les trois hommes envoyés par le sénat soutinrent devant lui lajustice de leur cause.
45 But Menelans, being now convicted, promised Ptolemee the son of Dorymenes to give him much money, if he would pacify the king toward him.	45 Voyant déjà la partie perdue, Ménélas promit des sommes importantes à Ptolémée, fils deDorymène, pour qu'il gagnât le roi à sa cause.
46 Whereupon Ptolemee taking the king aside into a certain gallery, as it were to take the air, brought him to be of another mind:	46 Aussi Ptolémée, ayant emmené le roi sous un portique comme pour prendre le frais, le fitchanger d'avis,
47 Insomuch that he discharged Menelans from the accusations, who notwithstanding was cause of all the mischief: and those poor men, who, if they had told their cause, yea, before the Scythians, should have been judged innocent, them he condemned to death.	47 si bien qu'il renvoya Ménélas, l'auteur de tout ce mal, absous des accusations portées contrelui, et qu'il condamna à mort des malheureux qui, s'ils avaient plaidé leur cause même devant des Scythes,eussent été renvoyés innocents.
48 Thus they that followed the matter for the city, and for the people, and for the holy vessels, did soon suffer unjust punishment.	48 Ceux donc qui avaient pris la défense de la ville, des bourgs et des vases sacrés subirent sansdélai cette peine injuste.
49 Wherefore even they of Tyrus, moved with hatred of that wicked deed, caused them to be honourably buried.	49 Aussi vit-on même des Tyriens, outrés d'une telle méchanceté, pourvoir magnifiquement àleur sépulture.
50 And so through the covetousness of them that were of power Menelans remained still in authority, increasing in malice, and being a great traitor to the citizens.	50 Quant à Ménélas, grâce à la cupidité des puissants, il se maintint au pouvoir, grandissant enmalice et se posant en principal adversaire de ses concitoyens.
