1 Now Judas had heard of the the Romans, that they were mighty and valiant men, and such as would lovingly accept all that joined themselves unto them, and make a league of amity with all that came unto them;	1 Frattanto Giuda venne a conoscere il nome dei Romani. Come essi, cioè, sono potenti in guerra e sono benevoli verso tutti quelli che si uniscono a loro, stringono amicizia con quanti ricorrono a loro e sono potenti in guerra.
2 And that they were men of great valour. It was told him also of their wars and noble acts which they had done among the Galatians, and how they had conquered them, and brought them under tribute;	2 Gli parlarono pure delle guerre e degli atti di valore da essi compiuti tra i Galati e come li avevano sottomessi e resi tributari.
3 And what they had done in the country of Spain, for the winning of the mines of the silver and gold which is there;	3 Quanto avevano fatto nella regione della Spagna per impadronirsi delle miniere di argento e di oro che vi si trovano
4 And that by their policy and patience they had conquered all the place, though it were very far from them; and the kings also that came against them from the uttermost part of the earth, till they had discomfited them, and given them a great overthrow, so that the rest did give them tribute every year:	4 e come si erano impadroniti di tutta quella regione con la loro prudenza e perseveranza, sebbene il luogo fosse molto distante da loro. Avevano sconfitto e inflitto gravi colpi ai re che erano andati contro di essi fin dall'estremità della terra e avevano costretto gli altri a pagare loro un tributo annuale.
5 Beside this, how they had discomfited in battle Philip, and Perseus, king of the Citims, with others that lifted up themselves against them, and had overcome them:	5 Sconfissero pure in guerra Filippo e Perseo, re dei Chittim, e quanti si erano ribellati, assoggettandoli a sé.
6 How also Antiochus the great king of Asia, that came against them in battle, having an hundred and twenty elephants, with horsemen, and chariots, and a very great army, was discomfited by them;	6 Anche Antioco il Grande, re dell'Asia, che mosse contro di loro in guerra con centoventi elefanti, cavalleria, carri e un esercito molto grande, fu da essi sconfitto;
7 And how they took him alive, and covenanted that he and such as reigned after him should pay a great tribute, and give hostages, and that which was agreed upon,	7 lo catturarono vivo e gli imposero di pagare, lui e i suoi successori, un grande tributo e di consegnare ostaggi, nonché di cedere
8 And the country of India, and Media and Lydia and of the goodliest countries, which they took of him, and gave to king Eumenes:	8 le regioni dell'India, la Media e la Lidia, con alcune delle sue migliori province, che essi tolsero a lui per darle al re Eumene.
9 Moreover how the Grecians had determined to come and destroy them;	9 Quelli della Grecia, infine, avevano deciso di andare a sterminarli,
10 And that they, having knowledge thereof sent against them a certain captain, and fighting with them slew many of them, and carried away captives their wives and their children, and spoiled them, and took possession of their lands, and pulled down their strong holds, and brought them to be their servants unto this day:	10 ma quando essi seppero la cosa, inviarono contro di loro un solo generale, combatterono contro di loro, ne fecero cadere molti trafitti, condussero in schiavitù le loro donne e i loro figli, li saccheggiarono, si impadronirono della loro terra, abbatterono le loro fortezze e se li resero soggetti fino a questo giorno.
11 It was told him besides, how they destroyed and brought under their dominion all other kingdoms and isles that at any time resisted them;	11 Quanto agli altri regni e alle isole che si erano loro opposti, li distrussero e li sottomisero. Con i loro amici, invece, e con quelli che si fidavano di loro, essi mantennero amicizia.
12 But with their friends and such as relied upon them they kept amity: and that they had conquered kingdoms both far and nigh, insomuch as all that heard of their name were afraid of them:	12 Stesero il loro potere su re vicini e lontani, e quanti udivano il loro nome ne avevano timore.
13 Also that, whom they would help to a kingdom, those reign; and whom again they would, they displace: finally, that they were greatly exalted:	13 Quelli che essi vogliono aiutare e far regnare, regnano; quelli che essi, invece, non vogliono, li depongono; e così si sono levati molto in alto.
14 Yet for all this none of them wore a crown or was clothed in purple, to be magnified thereby:	14 Con tutto ciò, neppure uno di essi ha cinto il diadema, né si è rivestito di porpora per grandeggiare.
15 Moreover how they had made for themselves a senate house, wherein three hundred and twenty men sat in council daily, consulting alway for the people, to the end they might be well ordered:	15 Si sono dati invece un consiglio e ogni giorno trecentoventi uomini si consultano continuamente intorno al popolo per il suo buon andamento.
16 And that they committed their government to one man every year, who ruled over all their country, and that all were obedient to that one, and that there was neither envy nor emmulation among them.	16 Ogni anno affidano il potere su di sé e il dominio su tutta la loro terra a un solo uomo. Tutti ubbidiscono a questo solo e non vi è tra loro né invidia né gelosia.
17 In consideration of these things, Judas chose Eupolemus the son of John, the son of Accos, and Jason the son of Eleazar, and sent them to Rome, to make a league of amity and confederacy with them,	17 Giuda, pertanto, scelse Eupòlemo, figlio di Giovanni, figlio di Accos, e Giasone, figlio di Eleàzaro, e li inviò a Roma per stringere con essi amicizia e alleanza,
18 And to intreat them that they would take the yoke from them; for they saw that the kingdom of the Grecians did oppress Israel with servitude.	18 affinché li liberassero dal giogo dei Greci, vedendo come il loro regno era deciso a ridurre Israele in schiavitù.
19 They went therefore to Rome, which was a very great journey, and came into the senate, where they spake and said.	19 Giunsero a Roma dopo un viaggio molto lungo; entrarono nel Senato e, presa la parola, dissero:
20 Judas Maccabeus with his brethren, and the people of the Jews, have sent us unto you, to make a confederacy and peace with you, and that we might be registered your confederates and friends.	20 "Giuda, detto Maccabeo, i suoi fratelli e il popolo dei Giudei ci hanno inviato a voi per stabilire con voi alleanza e pace e per essere noi iscritti come vostri alleati e amici".
21 So that matter pleased the Romans well.	21 Il discorso piacque ai presenti.
22 And this is the copy of the epistle which the senate wrote back again in tables of brass, and sent to Jerusalem, that there they might have by them a memorial of peace and confederacy:	22 Ecco la copia della lettera che essi fecero incidere su tavole di bronzo e che inviarono a Gerusalemme perché vi rimanesse come documento di pace e di alleanza:
23 Good success be to the Romans, and to the people of the Jews, by sea and by land for ever: the sword also and enemy be far from them,	23 "Sia bene ai Romani e alla nazione dei Giudei, in mare e sulla terra, per sempre! La spada e l'inimicizia siano lontane da essi!
24 If there come first any war upon the Romans or any of their confederates throughout all their dominion,	24 Se sarà mossa guerra per prima ai Romani o a qualunque dei loro alleati in tutto il loro dominio,
25 The people of the Jews shall help them, as the time shall be appointed, with all their heart:	25 la nazione dei Giudei combatterà al loro fianco, come le circostanze permetteranno, con cuore sincero.
26 Neither shall they give any thing unto them that make war upon them, or aid them with victuals, weapons, money, or ships, as it hath seemed good unto the Romans; but they shall keep their covenants without taking any thing therefore.	26 Non doneranno ai nemici né forniranno loro grano, armi, danaro o navi, secondo la decisione di Roma, ma osserveranno i loro impegni senza pretendere nulla.
27 In the same manner also, if war come first upon the nation of the Jews, the Romans shall help them with all their heart, according as the time shall be appointed them:	27 Allo stesso modo se alla nazione dei Giudei per prima sopravverrà una guerra, i Romani di cuore combatteranno al suo fianco come le circostanze permetteranno loro.
28 Neither shall victuals be given to them that take part against them, or weapons, or money, or ships, as it hath seemed good to the Romans; but they shall keep their covenants, and that without deceit.	28 Ai nemici non sarà dato né grano né armi né danaro né navi, secondo la decisione di Roma, ma osserveranno questi impegni senza inganno.
29 According to these articles did the Romans make a covenant with the people of the Jews.	29 E' in questi termini che i Romani hanno stretto alleanza con il popolo dei Giudei.
30 Howbeit if hereafter the one party or the other shall think to meet to add or diminish any thing, they may do it at their pleasures, and whatsoever they shall add or take away shall be ratified.	30 Se dopo di ciò gli uni o gli altri vorranno aggiungere o togliere qualche cosa, lo faranno a loro piacimento e ciò che avranno aggiunto o tolto sarà obbligatorio.
31 And as touching the evils that Demetrius doeth to the Jews, we have written unto him, saying, Wherefore thou made thy yoke heavy upon our friends and confederates the Jews?	31 Riguardo ai mali che il re Demetrio ha loro causato, abbiamo scritto a lui dicendogli: "Perché fai pesare il tuo giogo sui nostri amici e alleati Giudei?
32 If therefore they complain any more against thee, we will do them justice, and fight with thee by sea and by land.	32 Se, dunque, essi interverranno ancora contro di te, renderemo loro giustizia e ti faremo guerra per mare e per terra".
