1 Now the serpent was more subtil than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden?	1 Le serpent était le plus rusé de toutes les bêtes sauvages que Yahvé Dieu avait faites. Il dit à la femme: “Vraiment! Dieu a dit: Vous ne mangerez d’aucun des arbres du jardin?”
2 And the woman said unto the serpent, We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden:	2 La femme répondit au serpent: “Nous pouvons manger du fruit des arbres du jardin.
3 But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die.	3 Mais pour le fruit de l’arbre qui est au milieu du jardin, Dieu a dit: Vous n’en mangerez pas, vous n’y toucherez pas, sinon vous allez mourir.”
4 And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die:	4 Le serpent dit à la femme: “Non, ce ne sera pas la mort à coup sûr!
5 For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil.	5 Mais Dieu sait que le jour où vous en mangerez, vos yeux s’ouvriront et vous serez alors comme des dieux, vous connaîtrez le bien et le mal!”
6 And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat.	6 La femme vit que le fruit de l’arbre était bon à manger, agréable à voir, et très utile pour acquérir la sagesse. Elle prit de son fruit, elle en mangea et en donna également à son mari qui était avec elle, et il en mangea.
7 And the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together, and made themselves aprons.	7 Alors leurs yeux s’ouvrirent et ils découvrirent qu’ils étaient nus; ils se firent des pagnes avec des feuilles de figuier qu’ils avaient entrelacées.
8 And they heard the voice of the LORD God walking in the garden in the cool of the day: and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God amongst the trees of the garden.	8 Soudain ils entendirent les pas de Yahvé Dieu qui se promenait dans le jardin à la brise du soir. L’homme et sa femme se cachèrent de Yahvé Dieu parmi les arbres du jardin.
9 And the LORD God called unto Adam, and said unto him, Where art thou?	9 Yahvé Dieu appela l’homme et lui dit: “Où es-tu?”
10 And he said, I heard thy voice in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked; and I hid myself.	10 Il répondit: “J’ai entendu tes pas dans le jardin et j’ai eu peur, parce que je suis nu; c’est pourquoi je me suis caché.”
11 And he said, Who told thee that thou wast naked? Hast thou eaten of the tree, whereof I commanded thee that thou shouldest not eat?	11 Il dit: “Qui t’a appris que tu étais nu? Aurais-tu mangé du fruit de l’arbre dont je t’avais défendu de manger?”
12 And the man said, The woman whom thou gavest to be with me, she gave me of the tree, and I did eat.	12 L’homme dit: “La femme que tu as mise avec moi m’a donné du fruit de l’arbre et j’ai mangé.”
13 And the LORD God said unto the woman, What is this that thou hast done? And the woman said, The serpent beguiled me, and I did eat.	13 Yahvé Dieu dit à la femme: “Qu’as-tu fait là?” La femme répondit: “Le serpent m’a trompée et j’ai mangé.”
14 And the LORD God said unto the serpent, Because thou hast done this, thou art cursed above all cattle, and above every beast of the field; upon thy belly shalt thou go, and dust shalt thou eat all the days of thy life:	14 Alors Yahvé Dieu dit au serpent: “Puisque tu as fait cela, tu seras maudit parmi tous les animaux des champs et toutes les bêtes sauvages. Tu ramperas sur ton ventre et tu mangeras de la poussière tous les jours de ta vie.
15 And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.	15 Je mettrai la discorde entre toi et la femme, entre ta race et sa race, elle te blessera à la tête, et toi tu la blesseras au talon.”
16 Unto the woman he said, I will greatly multiply thy sorrow and thy conception; in sorrow thou shalt bring forth children; and thy desire shall be to thy husband, and he shall rule over thee.	16 Il dit à la femme: “Je multiplierai les souffrances de tes grossesses; dans la souffrance tu enfanteras tes fils; tu ne pourras te passer d’un mari, et lui dominera sur toi.”
17 And unto Adam he said, Because thou hast hearkened unto the voice of thy wife, and hast eaten of the tree, of which I commanded thee, saying, Thou shalt not eat of it: cursed is the ground for thy sake; in sorrow shalt thou eat of it all the days of thy life;	17 Il dit à l’homme: “Parce que tu as écouté la voix de ta femme et que tu as mangé du fruit de l’arbre dont je t’avais interdit de manger, le sol sera maudit à cause de toi. Il t’en coûtera pour tirer du sol ta nourriture tous les jours de ta vie.
18 Thorns also and thistles shall it bring forth to thee; and thou shalt eat the herb of the field;	18 Il te donnera épines et chardons, et tu mangeras l’herbe des champs.
19 In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return.	19 Tu mangeras ton pain à la sueur de ton front jusqu’à ce que tu retournes à la terre, puisque c’est d’elle que tu as été tiré: tu es poussière et tu retourneras en poussière.”
20 And Adam called his wife's name Eve; because she was the mother of all living.	20 L’homme donna alors à sa femme le nom d’Ève (c’est-à-dire la Vivante) parce qu’elle fut la mère de tous les vivants.
21 Unto Adam also and to his wife did the LORD God make coats of skins, and clothed them.	21 Puis Yahvé Dieu habilla l’homme et la femme avec les tuniques de peau qu’il leur avait faites.
22 And the LORD God said, Behold, the man is become as one of us, to know good and evil: and now, lest he put forth his hand, and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live for ever:	22 Yahvé Dieu dit alors: “Voici que l’homme est devenu comme l’un de nous dans la connaissance du bien et du mal. Il ne faudrait pas maintenant qu’il étende la main et prenne également de l’arbre de vie; car s’il en mangeait, il pourrait vivre toujours.”
23 Therefore the LORD God sent him forth from the garden of Eden, to till the ground from whence he was taken.	23 Yahvé Dieu le renvoya donc du jardin d’Éden pour qu’il cultive le sol d’où il avait été tiré.
24 So he drove out the man; and he placed at the east of the garden of Eden Cherubims, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to keep the way of the tree of life.	24 Il chassa l’homme et plaça les chérubins à l’orient du jardin d’Éden, ainsi que l’épée flamboyante et tournoyante qui gardait le chemin de l’arbre de vie.
