JERUSALEM	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Il y a des reproches intempestifs, il y a un silence qui dénote l'homme sensé.	1 There is the rebuke that is untimely, and there is the person who keeps quiet, and he is the shrewd one.
2 Mieux vaut faire des reproches que garder sa colère.	2 But how much better to rebuke than to fume!
3 Celui qui s'accuse d'une faute évite la peine.	3 The person who acknowledges a fault wards off punishment.
4 Tel l'eunuque qui voudrait déflorer une jeune fille, tel celui qui prétend rendre la justice parla violence.	4 Like a eunuch trying to take a girl's virginity is someone who tries to impose justice by force.
5 Tel se tait et passe pour sage, tel autre se fait détester pour son bavardage.	5 There is the person who keeps quiet and is considered wise, another incurs hatred for talking too much.

8 Celui qui parle trop se fait détester et celui qui prétend s'imposer suscite la haine.	8 Someone who talks too much wil earn dislike, and someone who usurps authority wil earn hatred.
9 Tel trouve son salut dans le malheur et parfois une aubaine provoque un dommage.	9 There is the person who finds misfortune a boon, and the piece of luck that turns to loss.
10 Il y a des générosités qui ne te profitent pas et il y a des générosités qui rapportent ledouble.	10 There is the gift that affords you no profit, and the gift that repays you double.
11 Parfois la gloire apporte l'humiliation et certains dans l'abaissement lèvent la tête.	11 There is the honour that leads to humiliation, and there are people in a low state who raise theirheads.

14 Le cadeau de l'insensé ne te sert à rien car ses yeux sont avides de recevoir le septuple;	14 The gift of the stupid wil bring you no advantage, his eyes look for seven times as much in return.
15 il donne peu et reproche beaucoup, il ouvre la bouche comme un crieur public; il prêteaujourd'hui, demain il redemande: c'est un homme détestable.	15 He gives little and reviles much, he opens his mouth like the town crier, he lends today and demandspayment tomorrow; he is a detestable fellow.

24 C'est une grave souillure pour un homme que le mensonge, il est ressassé par les ignorants.	24 Lying is an ugly blot on anyone, and ever on the lips of the undisciplined.
25 Mieux vaut un voleur qu'un maître menteur, mais l'un et l'autre vont à leur perte.	25 A thief is preferable to an inveterate liar, but both are heading for ruin.

29 Présents et cadeaux aveuglent les yeux des sages, comme un bâillon sur la bouche ilsétouffent les reproches.	29 Presents and gifts blind the eyes of the wise and stifle rebukes like a muzzle on the mouth.
30 Sagesse cachée et trésor invisible, à quoi servent-ils l'un et l'autre?	30 Wisdom concealed, and treasure undiscovered, what use is either of these?
31 Mieux vaut un homme qui cache sa folie qu'un homme qui cache sa sagesse.	31 Better one who conceals his fol y than one who conceals his wisdom.
