JERUSALEM	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Voici ce qui arriva ensuite. Absalom, fils de David, avait une soeur qui était belle et qui senommait Tamar, et Amnon, fils de David, s'éprit d'elle.	1 After this, the fol owing events took place. Absalom son of David had a beautiful sister whose namewas Tamar; Amnon son of David fel in love with her.
2 Amnon était tourmenté au point de se rendre malade à cause de sa soeur Tamar, car elle étaitvierge et Amnon ne voyait pas la possibilité de lui rien faire.	2 Amnon was so obsessed with his sister Tamar that it made him il , since she was a virgin and Amnonthought it impossible to do anything to her.
3 Mais Amnon avait un ami nommé Yonadab, fils de Shiméa, frère de David, et Yonadab était unhomme très avisé.	3 But Amnon had a friend called Jonadab son of Shimeah, David's brother, and Jonadab was a veryshrewd man.
4 Il lui dit: "D'où vient, fils du roi, que tu sois si languissant chaque matin? Ne m'expliqueras-tupas?" Amnon lui répondit: "C'est que j'aime Tamar, la soeur de mon frère Absalom."	4 'Son of the king,' he said, 'tel me why, morning after morning, you look so worn? Won't you tel me?'Amnon replied, 'I am in love with Tamar, my brother Absalom's sister.'
5 Alors Yonadab lui dit: "Mets-toi au lit, fais le malade et quand ton père viendra te voir, tu luidiras: Permets que ma soeur Tamar vienne me donner à manger; elle apprêtera le plat sous mes yeux pour que jele voie et je mangerai de sa main."	5 Then Jonadab said, 'Take to your bed, pretend to be ill and, when your father comes to visit you, say,"Please let my sister Tamar come and give me something to eat; let her prepare the food where I can see. Whatshe gives me I shal eat." '
6 Donc, Amnon se coucha et fit le malade. Le roi vint le voir et Amnon dit au roi: "Permets que masoeur Tamar vienne et que, sous mes yeux, elle prépare une paire de beignets, et je me restaurerai de sa main."	6 So Amnon lay down and pretended to be ill. The king then came to visit him and Amnon said to theking, 'Please let my sister Tamar come and make a cake or two where I can watch. What she gives me, I shaleat.'
7 David envoya dire à Tamar au palais: "Va donc chez ton frère Amnon et prépare-lui un plat."	7 David then sent word to Tamar at the palace, 'Go to your brother Amnon's house and prepare somefood for him.'
8 Tamar se rendit à la maison de son frère Amnon. Il était couché. Elle prit de la pâte, la pétrit,façonna des beignets sous ses yeux et fit cuire les beignets.	8 Tamar went to the house of her brother Amnon who was lying there in bed. She took dough andkneaded it, and she made some cakes while he watched, and baked the cakes.
9 Puis elle prit la poêle et la vida devant lui, mais il refusa de manger. Amnon dit: "Faites sortirtout le monde d'auprès de moi." Et tout le monde sortit d'auprès de lui.	9 She then took the pan and dished them up in front of him, but he refused to eat. Amnon said, 'Leteveryone leave me!' So everyone withdrew.
10 Alors Amnon dit à Tamar: "Apporte le plat dans l'alcôve, que je me restaure de ta main." EtTamar prit les beignets qu'elle avait faits et les apporta à son frère Amnon dans l'alcôve.	10 Amnon then said to Tamar, 'Bring the food to the inner room, so that I can eat what you give me.' SoTamar took the cakes which she had made and brought them to her brother Amnon in the inner room.
11 Comme elle lui présentait à manger, il la saisit et lui dit: "Viens, couche avec moi, ma soeur!"	11 And as she was offering the food to him, he caught hold of her and said, 'Come to bed with me,sister!'
12 Mais elle lui répondit: "Non, mon frère! Ne me violente pas, car on n'agit pas ainsi en Israël, necommets pas cette infamie.	12 She replied, 'No, brother! Do not force me! This is no way to behave in Israel. Do not do anything sodisgraceful!
13 Moi, où irais-je porter ma honte? Et toi, tu serais comme un infâme en Israël! Maintenant parledonc au roi: il ne refusera pas de me donner à toi."	13 Wherever should I go? I should be marked with this shame, while you would become disgraced inIsrael. Why not go and speak to the king? He wil not refuse to give me to you.'
14 Mais il ne voulut pas l'entendre, il la maîtrisa et, lui faisant violence, il coucha avec elle.	14 But he would not listen to her; he overpowered her and raped her.
15 Alors Amnon se prit à la haïr très fort -- la haine qu'il lui voua surpassait l'amour dont il l'avaitaimée -- et Amnon lui dit: "Lève-toi! Va-t-en!"	15 Amnon was then seized with extreme hatred for her; the hatred he now felt for her was greater thanhis earlier love. 'Get up and go!' he said.
16 Elle lui dit: "Non, mon frère, me chasser serait pire que l'autre mal que tu m'as fait." Mais il nevoulut pas l'écouter.	16 She said, 'No, brother! To send me away would be worse than the other wrong you have done me!'But he would not listen to her.
17 Il appela le garçon qui le servait et lui dit: "Débarrasse-moi de cette fille, jette-la dehors etverrouille la porte derrière elle!"	17 He cal ed his personal servant. 'Rid me of this woman!' he said. 'Throw her out and bolt the doorbehind her!'
18 (Elle portait une tunique de luxe qui était autrefois le vêtement des filles qui n'étaient pasmariées.) Le serviteur la mit dehors et verrouilla la porte derrière elle.	18 (She was wearing a magnificent dress, for this was what the king's unmarried daughters wore indays gone by.) So the servant put her out and bolted the door behind her.
19 Tamar, prenant de la poussière, la jeta sur sa tête, elle déchira la tunique de luxe qu'elle portait,mit la main sur sa tête et s'en alla, poussant des cris en marchant.	19 Tamar put dust on her head, tore the magnificent dress which she was wearing, laid her hand on herhead, and went away, crying aloud as she went.
20 Son frère Absalom lui dit: "Serait-ce que ton frère Amnon a été avec toi? Maintenant, ma soeur,tais-toi; c'est ton frère: ne prends pas cette affaire à coeur." Tamar demeura abandonnée, dans la maison de sonfrère Absalom.	20 Her brother Absalom said to her, 'Has Amnon your brother been with you? Sister, be quiet; he is yourbrother; do not take the matter to heart!' Tamar, however, went back to her brother Absalom's houseinconsolable.
21 Lorsque le roi David apprit toute cette histoire, il en fut très irrité, mais il ne voulut pas faire depeine à son fils Amnon, qu'il aimait parce que c'était son premier-né.	21 When King David heard the whole story, he was very angry; but he had no wish to harm his sonAmnon, whom he loved because he was his first-born.
22 Quant à Absalom, il n'adressa plus la parole à Amnon, car Absalom s'était pris de haine pourAmnon à cause de la violence qu'il avait faite à sa soeur Tamar.	22 Absalom, however, would not so much as speak to Amnon, since he hated Amnon for having rapedhis sister Tamar.
23 Deux ans plus tard, comme Absalom avait les tondeurs à Baal-Haçor, qui est près d'Ephraïm, ilinvita tous les fils du roi.	23 Two years later, when Absalom had the sheep-shearers at Baal-Hazor, which is near Ephraim, heinvited al the king's sons.
24 Absalom se rendit auprès du roi et dit: "Voici que ton serviteur a les tondeurs. Que le roi et sesofficiers daignent venir avec ton serviteur."	24 Absalom went to the king and said, 'Now sir, your servant has the sheep-shearers. Wil the king andhis retinue be pleased to come with your servant?'
25 Le roi répondit à Absalom: "Non, mon fils, il ne faut pas que nous allions tous et te soyons àcharge." Absalom insista, mais il ne voulut pas venir et lui donna congé.	25 'No, my son,' the king replied, 'we must not al come and be a burden to you.' And though Absalomwas insistent, he would not go but dismissed him.
26 Absalom reprit: "Permets-tu du moins que mon frère Amnon vienne avec nous." Et le roi dit:"Pourquoi irait-il avec toi?"	26 Absalom persisted, 'Then at least let my brother Amnon come with us.' The king said, 'Why should hego with you?'
27 Mais Absalom insista et il laissa partir avec lui Amnon et tous les fils du roi. Absalom préparaun festin de roi	27 On Absalom's insistence, however, he let Amnon and al the king's sons to go with him. Absalomprepared a royal banquet
28 et il donna cet ordre aux serviteurs: "Faites attention! Lorsque le coeur d'Amnon sera mis engaîté par le vin et que je vous dirai: Frappez Amnon!, vous le mettrez à mort. N'ayez pas peur; n'est-ce pas moiqui vous l'ai ordonné? Prenez courage et montrez-vous vaillants."	28 and then gave this order to the servants, 'Listen careful y; when Amnon's heart is merry with wineand I say, "Strike Amnon down", then kil him. Don't be afraid. Have I not myself given you the order? Use yourstrength and show your mettle!'
29 Les serviteurs d'Absalom agirent à l'égard d'Amnon comme Absalom l'avait ordonné. Alorstous les fils du roi se levèrent, enfourchèrent chacun son mulet et s'enfuirent.	29 Absalom's servants treated Amnon as Absalom had ordered. The king's sons al leapt to their feet,mounted their mules and fled.
30 Comme ils étaient en chemin, cette rumeur parvint à David: "Absalom a tué tous les fils du roi,il n'en reste pas un seul!"	30 While they were on the road, word reached David, 'Absalom has killed all the king's sons; not one ofthem is left.'
31 Le roi se leva, déchira ses vêtements et se coucha par terre; tous ses officiers se tenaient debout,les vêtements déchirés.	31 The king stood up, tore his clothes and threw himself on the ground. Al his officers tore their clothestoo.
32 Mais Yonadab, le fils de Shiméa, frère de David, prit ainsi la parole: "Que Monseigneur ne disepas qu'on a fait périr tous les jeunes gens, les fils du roi, car seul Amnon est mort: Absalom s'était promis celadepuis le jour où Amnon avait outragé sa soeur Tamar.	32 Jonadab son of Shimeah, David's brother, then spoke up and said, 'Do not let my lord take to heartthe report that al the young men, the king's sons, have been killed, since only Amnon is dead: for Absalom hasbeen promising himself to do this since the day when Amnon raped his sister Tamar.
33 Que maintenant Monseigneur le roi ne se mette pas dans l'idée que tous les fils du roi ont péri.Non, Amnon seul est mort	33 So my lord the king must not imagine that al the king's sons are dead; only Amnon is dead
34 et Absalom s'est enfui." Le cadet qui était en sentinelle, levant les yeux, aperçut une troupenombreuse qui s'avançait sur le chemin de Bahurim. La sentinelle vint annoncer au roi: "J'ai vu des hommesdescendant par le chemin de Bahurim au flanc de la montagne."	34 and Absalom has fled.' The man on sentry duty looked up and saw a large troop coming along theroad from Bahurim. The sentry came to tell the king, 'I have seen some people coming down the Bahurim roadon the mountainside.'
35 Alors Yonadab dit au roi: "Ce sont les fils du roi qui arrivent: il en a été comme ton serviteurl'avait dit."	35 Jonadab then said to the king, 'These are the king's sons arriving: what your servant said is exactlywhat happened.'
36 Il achevait à peine de parler que les fils du roi entrèrent, et ils se mirent à crier et à pleurer; leroi aussi et tous ses officiers pleurèrent très fort.	36 He had scarcely finished speaking when the king's sons arrived and wept aloud; the king and al hisretinue wept aloud too.
37 Absalom s'était enfui et s'était rendu chez Talmaï, fils d'Ammihud, roi de Geshur; le roi gardatout le temps le deuil de son fils.	37 Absalom had gone to Talmai son of Ammihud, king of Geshur. The king mourned for his son everyday.
38 Absalom s'était enfui et s'était rendu à Geshur; il y resta trois ans.	38 When Absalom had gone to Geshur, he stayed there for three years.
39 L'esprit du roi cessa de s'emporter contre Absalom, car il s'était consolé de la mort d'Amnon.	39 Once the king was consoled over Amnon's death, his anger against Absalom subsided.
