JERUSALEM	DOUAI-RHEIMS
1 Jacob apprit que les fils de Laban disaient: "Jacob a pris tout ce qui était à notre père et c'est auxdépens de notre père qu'il a constitué toute cette richesse."	1 But after that he heard the words of the sons of Laban, saying: Jacob hath taken away all that was our father's, and being enriched by his substance is become great:
2 Jacob vit à la mine de Laban qu'il n'était plus avec lui comme auparavant.	2 And perceiving also that Laban's countenance was not towards him as yesterday and the other day,
3 Yahvé dit à Jacob: "Retourne au pays de tes pères, dans ta patrie, et je serai avec toi."	3 Especially the Lord saying to him: Return into the land of thy fathers, and to thy kindred, and I will be with thee.
4 Jacob fit appeler Rachel et Léa aux champs où étaient ses troupeaux,	4 He sent, and called Rachel and Lia into the field, where he fed the flocks,
5 et il leur dit: "Je vois à la mine de votre père qu'il n'est plus à mon égard comme auparavant, maisle Dieu de mon père a été avec moi.	5 And said to them: I see your father's countenance is not towards me as yesterday and the other day: but the God of my father hath been with me.
6 Vous savez vous-mêmes que j'ai servi votre père de toutes mes forces.	6 And you know that I have served your father to the utmost of my power.
7 Votre père s'est joué de moi, il a changé dix fois mon salaire, mais Dieu ne lui a pas permis de mefaire du tort.	7 Yea, your father also hath overreached me, and hath changes my wages ten times: and yet God hath not suffered him to hurt me.
8 Chaque fois qu'il disait: Ce qui est moucheté sera ton salaire, toutes les bêtes mettaient bas despetits mouchetés; chaque fois qu'il disait: Ce qui est rayé sera ton salaire, toutes les bêtes mettaient bas des petitsrayés,	8 If at any time he said: The speckled shall be thy wages: all the sheep brought forth speckled: but when he said on the contrary: Thou shalt take all the white ones for thy wages: all the flocks brought forth white ones.
9 et Dieu a enlevé son bétail à votre père et me l'a donné.	9 And God hath taken your father's substance, and given it to me.
10 Il arriva, au temps où les bêtes entrent en chaleur, que je levai les yeux et je vis en songe que lesboucs en passe de saillir les bêtes étaient rayés, tachetés ou tavelés.	10 For after that time came of the ewes conceiving, I lifted up my eyes, and saw in my sleep that the males which leaped upon the females were of diverse colors, and spotted, and speckled.
11 L'Ange de Dieu me dit en songe: Jacob, et je répondis: Oui.	11 And the angel of God said to me in my sleep: Jacob? And I answered: Here I am.
12 Il dit: Lève les yeux et vois: tous les boucs qui saillissent les bêtes sont rayés, tachetés ou tavelés,car j'ai vu tout ce que Laban te fait.	12 And he said: Lift up thy eyes, and see that all the males leaping upon the females, are of divers colors, spotted, and speckled. For I have seen all that Laban hath done to thee.
13 Je suis le Dieu qui t'est apparu à Béthel, où tu as oint une stèle et où tu m'as fait un vœu.Maintenant debout, sors de ce pays et retourne dans ta patrie."	13 I am the God of Bethel, where thou didst anoint the stone, and make a vow to me. Now therefore arise, and go out of this land, and return into thy native country.
14 Rachel et Léa lui répondirent ainsi: "Avons-nous encore une part et un héritage dans la maison denotre père?	14 And Rachel and Lia answered: Have we anything left among the goods and inheritance of our father's house?
15 Ne sommes-nous pas considérées par lui comme des étrangères, puisqu'il nous a vendues et qu'il aensuite mangé notre argent?	15 Hath he not counted us as strangers and sold us, and eaten up the price of us?
16 Oui, toute la richesse que Dieu a retirée à notre père est à nous et à nos enfants. Fais doncmaintenant tout ce que Dieu t'a dit."	16 But God hath taken our father's riches, and delivered them to us, and to our children: wherefore do all that God hath commanded thee.
17 Jacob se leva, fit monter ses enfants et ses femmes sur des chameaux,	17 Then Jacob rose up, and having set his children and wives upon camels, went his way.
18 et poussa devant lui tout son bétail, -- avec tous les biens qu'il avait acquis, le bétail qui luiappartenait et qu'il avait acquis en Paddân-Aram, -- pour aller chez son père Isaac, au pays de Canaan.	18 And he took all his substance, and flocks, and whatsoever he had gotten in Mesopotamia, and went forward to Isaac his father to the land of Chanaan.
19 Laban était allé tondre son troupeau et Rachel déroba les idoles domestiques qui étaient à sonpère.	19 At that time Laban was gone to shear his sheep, and Rachel stole away her father's idols.
20 Jacob abusa l'esprit de Laban l'Araméen en ne lui laissant pas soupçonner qu'il fuyait.	20 And Jacob would not confess to his father in law that he was flying away.
21 Il s'enfuit avec tout ce qu'il avait, il partit, passa le Fleuve et se dirigea vers le mont Galaad.	21 And when he was gone, together with all that belonged to him, and having passed the river, was going on towards mount Galaad,
22 Le troisième jour, on apprit à Laban que Jacob s'était enfui.	22 It was told Laban on the third day that Jacob fled.
23 Il prit ses frères avec lui, le poursuivit sept jours de chemin et l'atteignit au mont Galaad.	23 And he took his brethren with him, and pursued after him seven days; and overtook him in the mount of Galaad.
24 Dieu visita Laban l'Araméen dans une vision nocturne et lui dit: "Garde-toi de dire à Jacob quoique ce soit."	24 And he saw in a dream God saying to him: Take heed thou speak not any thing harshly against Jacob.
25 Laban rejoignit Jacob qui avait planté sa tente dans la montagne, et Laban planta sa tente au montGalaad.	25 Now Jacob had pitched his tent in the mountain: and when he with his brethren had overtaken him, he pitched his tent in the same mount of Galaad.
26 Laban dit à Jacob: "Qu'as-tu fait d'abuser mon esprit et d'emmener mes filles comme des captivesde guerre?	26 And he said to Jacob: Why hast thou done thus, to carry away, without my knowledge, my daughters, as captives taken with the sword.
27 Pourquoi as-tu fui en secret et m'as-tu abusé au lieu de m'avertir, pour que je te reconduise dansl'allégresse et les chants, avec tambourins et lyres?	27 Why wouldst thou run away privately and not acquaint me, that I might have brought thee on the way with joy, and with songs, and with timbrels, and with harps?
28 Tu ne m'as pas laissé embrasser mes fils et mes filles. Vraiment, tu as agi en insensé!	28 Thou hast not suffered me to kiss my sons and daughters: thou hast done foolishly: and now, indeed,
29 Il serait en mon pouvoir de te faire du mal, mais le Dieu de ton père, la nuit passée, m'a dit ceci:Garde-toi de dire à Jacob quoi que ce soit.	29 It is in my power to return thee evil: but the God of your father said to me yesterday: Take heed thou speak not any things harshly against Jacob.
30 Maintenant, tu es donc parti, parce que tu languissais tellement après la maison de ton père! Maispourquoi as-tu volé mes dieux?"	30 Suppose thou didst desire to go to thy friends, and hadst a longing after thy father's house: why hast thou stolen away my gods?
31 Jacob répondit ainsi à Laban: "J'ai eu peur, je me suis dit que tu allais m'enlever tes filles.	31 Jacob answered: That I departed unknown to thee, it was for fear lest thou wouldst take away thy daughters by force.
32 Mais celui chez qui tu trouveras tes dieux ne restera pas vivant: devant nos frères, reconnais cequi est à toi chez moi, et prends-le." Jacob ignorait en effet que Rachel les avait dérobés.	32 But whereas thou chargest me with theft: with whomsoever thou shalt find thy gods, let him be slain before our brethren. Search, and if thou find any of thy things with me, take them away. Now when he said this, he knew not that Rachel had stolen the idols.
33 Laban alla chercher dans la tente de Jacob, puis dans la tente de Léa, puis dans la tente des deuxservantes, et il ne trouva rien. Il sortit de la tente de Léa et entra dans celle de Rachel.	33 So Laban went into the tent of Jacob, and of Lia, and of both the handmaids, and found them not. And when he was entered into Rachel's tent,
34 Or Rachel avait pris les idoles domestiques, les avait mises dans le palanquin du chameau ets'était assise dessus; Laban fouilla toute la tente et ne trouva rien.	34 She in haste hid the idols under the camel's furniture, and sat upon them: and when he had searched all the tent, and found nothing,
35 Rachel dit à son père: "Que Monseigneur ne voie pas avec colère que je ne puisse me lever en taprésence, car j'ai ce qui est coutumier aux femmes." Laban chercha et ne trouva pas les idoles.	35 She said: Let not my lord be angry that I cannot rise up before thee, because it has now happened to me, according to the custom of women, So his careful search was in vain.
36 Jacob se mit en colère et prit à partie Laban. Et Jacob adressa ainsi la parole à Laban: "Quel estmon crime, quelle est ma faute, que tu te sois acharné après moi?	36 And jacob being angry, said in a chiding manner: For what fault of mine, and for what offense on my part hast thou so hotly pursued me,
37 Tu as fouillé toutes mes affaires: as-tu rien trouvé de toutes les affaires de ta maison? Produis-leici, devant mes frères et tes frères, et qu'ils jugent entre nous deux!	37 And searched all my household stuff? What hast thou found of all the substance of thy house? lay it here before my brethren, and thy brethren, and let them judge between me and thee.
38 Voici vingt ans que je suis chez toi, tes brebis et tes chèvres n'ont pas avorté et je n'ai pas mangéles béliers de ton troupeau.	38 Have I therefore been with thee twenty years? thy ewes and goats were not barren, the rams of thy flocks I did not eat:
39 Les animaux déchirés par les fauves, je ne les rapportais pas, c'était moi qui compensais leurperte; tu me les réclamais, que j'aie été volé de jour ou que j'aie été volé de nuit.	39 Neither did I show thee that which the beast had torn, I made good all the damage: whatsoever was lost by theft, thou didst exact it of me:
40 J'ai été dévoré par la chaleur pendant le jour, par le froid pendant la nuit, et le sommeil a fui mesyeux.	40 Day and night was I parched with heat, and with frost, and sleep departed from my eyes.
41 Voici vingt ans que je suis dans ta maison: je t'ai servi quatorze ans pour tes deux filles et six anspour ton troupeau, et tu as changé dix fois mon salaire.	41 And in this manner have I served thee in thy house twenty years, fourteen for thy daughters, and six for thy flocks: thou hast changed also my wages ten times.
42 Si le Dieu de mon père, le Dieu d'Abraham, le Parent d'Isaac, n'avait pas été avec moi, tu m'auraisrenvoyé les mains vides. Mais Dieu a vu mes fatigues et le labeur de mes bras et, la nuit passée, il a rendu sonjugement."	42 Unless the God of my father Abraham, and the fear of Isaac had stood by me, peradventure now thou hadst sent me away naked: God beheld my affliction and the labour of my hands, and rebuked thee yesterday.
43 Laban répondit ainsi à Jacob: "Ces filles sont mes filles, ces enfants sont mes enfants, ce bétail estmon bétail, tout ce que tu vois est à moi. Mais que pourrais-je faire aujourd'hui à mes filles que voici et auxenfants qu'elles ont mis au monde?	43 Laban answered him: The daughters are mine and the children, and thy flocks, and all things that thou seest are mine: what can I do to my children, and grandchildren?
44 Allons, concluons un traité, moi et toi..., et que cela serve de témoin entre moi et toi."	44 Come therefore, let us enter into a league: that it may be for a testimony between me and thee.
45 Alors Jacob prit une pierre et la dressa comme une stèle.	45 And Jacob took a stone, and set it up for a title:
46 Et Jacob dit à ses frères: "Ramassez des pierres." Ils ramassèrent des pierres et en firent unmonceau et ils mangèrent là, sur le monceau.	46 And he said to his brethren: Bring hither stones. And they gathering stones together, made a heap, and they ate upon it.
47 Laban le nomma Yegar Sahadûta et Jacob le nomma Galéed.	47 And Laban called it The witness heap: and Jacob, The hillock of testimony: each of them according to the propriety of his language.
48 Laban dit: "Que ce monceau soit aujourd'hui un témoin entre moi et toi." C'est pourquoi il lenomma Galéed,	48 And Laban said: This heap shall be a witness between me and thee this day, and therefore the name thereof was called Galaad, that is, The witness heap.
49 et Miçpa, parce qu'il dit: "Que Yahvé soit un guetteur entre moi et toi, quand nous ne serons plusen vue l'un de l'autre.	49 The Lord behold and judge between us when we shall be gone one from the other.
50 Si tu maltraites mes filles ou si tu prends d'autres femmes en sus de mes filles, et que personne nesoit avec nous, vois:Dieu est témoin entre moi et toi."	50 If thou afflict my daughters, and if thou bring in other wives over them: none is witness of our speech but God, who is present and beholdeth.
51 Et Laban dit à Jacob: "Voici ce monceau que j'ai entassé entre moi et toi, et voici la stèle.	51 And he said again to Jacob: Behold, this heap, and the stone which I have set up between me and thee,
52 Ce monceau est témoin, la stèle est témoin, que moi je ne dois pas dépasser ce monceau vers toi etque toi tu ne dois pas dépasser ce monceau et cette stèle, vers moi, avec de mauvaises intentions.	52 Shall be a witness: this heap, I say, and the stone, be they for a testimony, if either I shall pass beyond it going towards thee, or thou shalt pass beyond it, thinking harm to me.
53 Que le Dieu d'Abraham et le Dieu de Nahor jugent entre nous."Et Jacob prêta serment par leParent d'Isaac, son père.	53 The God of Abraham, and the God of Nachor, the God of their father, judge between us. And jacob swore by the fear of his father Isaac.
54 Jacob fit un sacrifice sur la montagne et invita ses frères au repas. Ils prirent le repas et passèrentla nuit sur la montagne.	54 And after he had offered sacrifices in the mountain, he called his brethren to eat bread. And when they had eaten, they lodged there:
	55 But laban arose in the night, and kissed his sons, and daughters, and blessed them: and returned to his place.
