Συμεων Πετρος, δουλος και αποστολος του Ιησου Χριστου, προς τους οσοι ελαχον ισοτιμον με ημας πιστιν εις την δικαιοσυνην του Θεου ημων και Σωτηρος Ιησου Χριστου?1 Simon Peter, servant and apostle of Jesus Christ, to them that have obtained equal faith with us in the justice of our God and Saviour Jesus Christ.
χαρις και ειρηνη πληθυνθειη εις εσας δια της επιγνωσεως του Θεου και του Ιησου του Κυριου ημων.2 Grace to you and peace be accomplished in the knowledge of God and of Christ Jesus our Lord:
Καθως η θεια δυναμις αυτου εχαρισεν εις ημας παντα τα προς ζωην και ευσεβειαν δια της επιγνωσεως του καλεσαντος ημας δια της δοξης αυτου και αρετης,3 As all things of his divine power which appertain to life and godliness, are given us, through the knowledge of him who hath called us by his own proper glory and virtue.
δια των οποιων εδωρηθησαν εις ημας αι μεγισται και τιμιαι επαγγελιαι, ινα δια τουτων γεινητε κοινωνοι θειας φυσεως, αποφυγοντες την εν τω κοσμω υπαρχουσαν δια της επιθυμιας διαφθοραν.4 By whom he hath given us most great and precious promises: that by these you may be made partakers of the divine nature: flying the corruption of that concupiscence which is in the world.
Και δι' αυτο δε τουτο καταβαλοντες πασαν σπουδην, προσθεσατε εις την πιστιν σας την αρετην, εις δε την αρετην την γνωσιν,5 And you, employing all care, minister in your faith, virtue; and in virtue, knowledge;
εις δε την γνωσιν την εγκρατειαν, εις δε την εγκρατειαν την υπομονην, εις δε την υπομονην την ευσεβειαν,6 And in knowledge, abstinence; and in abstinence, patience; and in patience, godliness;
εις δε την ευσεβειαν την φιλαδελφιαν, εις δε την φιλαδελφιαν την αγαπην.7 And in godliness, love of brotherhood; and in love of brotherhood, charity.
Διοτι, εαν ταυτα υπαρχωσιν εις εσας και περισσευωσι, σας καθιστωσιν ουχι αργους ουδε ακαρπους εις την επιγνωσιν του Κυριου ημων Ιησου Χριστου?8 For if these things be with you and abound, they will make you to be neither empty nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.
επειδη εις οντινα δεν υπαρχουσι ταυτα, τυφλος ειναι, μυωπαζει και ελησμονησε τον καθαρισμον των παλαιων αυτου αμαρτιων.9 For he that hath not these things with him, is blind, and groping, having forgotten that he was purged from his old sins.
Δια τουτο, αδελφοι, επιμεληθητε περισσοτερον να καμητε βεβαιαν την κλησιν και την εκλογην σας? διοτι ταυτα καμνοντες δεν θελετε πταισει ποτε.10 Wherefore, brethren, labour the more, that by good works you may make sure your calling and election. For doing these things, you shall not sin at any time.
Διοτι ουτω θελει σας δοθη πλουσιως η εισοδος εις την αιωνιον βασιλειαν του Κυριου ημων και Σωτηρος Ιησου Χριστου.11 For so an entrance shall be ministered to you abundantly into the everlasting kingdom of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.
Οθεν δεν θελω αμελησει να σας υπενθυμιζω παντοτε περι τουτων, καιτοι ειδοτας και εστηριγμενους εις την παρουσαν αληθειαν.12 For which cause I will begin to put you always in remembrance of these things: though indeed you know them, and are confirmed in the present truth.
Στοχαζομαι ομως δικαιον, εφ' οσον ειμαι εν τουτω τω σκηνωματι, να σας διεγειρω δια της υπενθυμισεως,13 But I think it meet as long as I am in this tabernacle, to stir you up by putting you in remembrance.
επειδη εξευρω οτι εντος ολιγον θελω αποθεσει το σκηνωμα μου, καθως και ο Κυριος ημων Ιησους Χριστος μοι εφανερωσε.14 Being assured that the laying away of this my tabernacle is at hand, according as our Lord Jesus Christ also hath signified to me.
Θελω ομως επιμεληθη, ωστε σεις και μετα την αποβιωσιν μου να δυνασθε παντοτε να ενθυμησθε αυτα.15 And I will endeavour, that you frequently have after my decease, whereby you may keep a memory of these things.
Διοτι σας εγνωστοποιησαμεν την δυναμιν και παρουσιαν του Κυριου ημων Ιησου Χριστου, ουχι μυθους σοφιστικους ακολουθησαντες, αλλ' αυτοπται γενομενοι της εκεινου μεγαλειοτητος.16 For we have not by following artificial fables, made known to you the power, and presence of our Lord Jesus Christ; but we were eyewitnesses of his greatness.
Διοτι ελαβε παρα Θεου Πατρος τιμην και δοξαν, οτε ηλθεν εις αυτον τοιαυτη φωνη υπο της μεγαλοπρεπους δοξης, Ουτος ειναι ο Υιος μου ο αγαπητος, εις τον οποιον εγω ευηρεστηθην?17 For he received from God the Father, honour and glory: this voice coming down to him from the excellent glory: This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased; hear ye him.
και ταυτην την φωνην ημεις ηκουσαμεν εξ ουρανου ελθουσαν, οντες μετ' αυτου εν τω ορει τω αγιω.18 And this voice we heard brought from heaven, when we were with him in the holy mount.
Και εχομεν βεβαιοτερον τον προφητικον λογον, εις τον οποιον καμνετε καλα να προσεχητε ως εις λυχνον φεγγοντα εν σκοτεινω τοπω, εωσου ελθη η αυγη της ημερας και ο φωσφορος ανατειλη εν ταις καρδιαις υμων?19 And we have the more firm prophetical word: whereunto you do well to attend, as to a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day star arise in your hearts:
τουτο πρωτον εξευροντες, οτι ουδεμια προφητεια της γραφης γινεται εξ ιδιας του προφητευοντος διασαφησεως?20 Understanding this first, that no prophecy of scripture is made by private interpretation.
διοτι δεν ηλθε ποτε προφητεια εκ θεληματος ανθρωπου, αλλ' υπο του Πνευματος του Αγιου κινουμενοι ελαλησαν οι αγιοι ανθρωποι του Θεου.21 For prophecy came not by the will of man at any time: but the holy men of God spoke, inspired by the Holy Ghost.
