1 The ancient to the dearly beloved Gaius, whom I love in truth.	1 Lettre de l’Ancien à notre très cher Gaïus: je l’aime selon la vérité.
2 Dearly beloved, concerning all things I make it my prayer that thou mayest proceed prosperously, and fare well as thy soul doth prosperously.	2 Très cher, puisque ton âme est sur la bonne voie, je souhaite que tu sois en bonne santé et que tout aille bien pour toi.
3 I was exceedingly glad when the brethren came and gave testimony to the truth in thee, even as thou walkest in the truth.	3 Cela a été pour moi une vraie joie quand sont arrivés les frères qui nous ont dit la vérité à ton sujet: tu vis bien dans la vérité.
4 I have no greater grace than this, to hear that my children walk in truth.	4 Je n’ai pas de plus grande joie que d’apprendre que mes enfants vivent dans la vérité.
5 Dearly beloved, thou dost faithfully whatever thou dost for the brethren, and that for strangers,	5 Très cher, tu fais toujours bien quand tu te mets au service de nos frères - c’étaient pour toi des étrangers.
6 Who have given testimony to thy charity in the sight of the church: whom thou shalt do well to bring forward on their way in a manner worthy of God.	6 Ils ont fait l’éloge de ta charité devant toute l’Église, et tu as bien agi quand tu les a congédiés d’une façon si digne de Dieu.
7 Because, for his name they went out, taking nothing of the Gentiles.	7 De fait, c’est pour le Nom qu’ils étaient en mission et ils n’attendaient rien des non-chrétiens.
8 We therefore ought to receive such, that we may be fellow helpers of the truth.	8 Nous devons accueillir les gens comme eux si nous voulons aider la vérité.
9 I had written perhaps to the church: but Diotrephes, who loveth to have the pre-eminence among them, doth not receive us.	9 J’ai écrit à l’Église. Mais Diotréphès se sent si bien le numéro un qu’il ne tient pas compte de nous.
10 For this cause, if I come, I will advertise his works which he doth, with malicious words prating against us. And as if these things were not enough for him, neither doth he himself receive the brethren, and them that do receive them he forbiddeth, and casteth out of the church.	10 Aussi, si j’y vais, je lui rappellerai sa conduite car il ne manque pas de dire du mal de nous. Et comme si cela ne suffisait pas, il ne reçoit pas les frères, et ceux qui voudraient les recevoir, il le leur défend et il les expulse de l’Église.
11 Dearly beloved, follow not that which is evil, but that which is good. He that doth good, is of God: he that doth evil, hath not seen God.	11 Très cher, n’imite pas le mal mais le bien. Celui qui fait le bien est de Dieu, celui qui fait le mal n’a pas vu Dieu.
12 To Demetrius testimony is given by all, and by the truth itself, yea and we also give testimony: and thou knowest that our testimony is true.	12 Quant à Démétrius, tous disent du bien de lui, la Vérité aussi. Nous aussi nous faisons son éloge, et tu sais que notre témoignage est vrai.
13 I had many things to write unto thee: but I would not by ink and pen write to thee.	13 Je voudrais te dire bien des choses, mais pas par lettre, avec de l’encre et du papier.
14 But I hope speedily to see thee, and we will speak mouth to mouth. Peace be to thee. Our friends salute thee. Salute the friends by name.	14 J’espère te voir bientôt et nous parlerons de vive voix.
	15 Paix à toi. Les amis te saluent. Salue personnellement nos amis.
