DOUAI-RHEIMSSAGRADA BIBLIA
Then all the children of Israel went out and gathered together as one man from Dan to Bersabee, with the land of Galaad, to the Lord in Maspha:1 Movimentaram-se, pois, todos os israelitas como um só homem, desde Dã até Bersabéia, e até a terra de Galaad. E a assembléia reuniu-se diante do Senhor em Masfa.
And all the chiefs of the people, and all the tribes of Israel met together in the assembly of the people of God, four hundred thousand footmen fit for war.2 os chefes de todo o povo e todas as tribos de Israel apresentaram-se diante da assembléia do povo de Deus: havia quatrocentos mil homens de pé, armados com a espada.
(Nor were the children of Benjamin ignorant that the children of Israel were come up to Maspha.) And the Levite the husband of the woman that was killed, being asked, how so great a wickedness had been committed,3 E os filhos de Benjamim souberam que os israelitas tinham subido a Masfa. Os israelitas disseram: Dizei-nos de que modo se cometeu esse crime?
Answered: I came into Gabaa of Benjamin with my wife, and there I lodged:4 O levita, marido da mulher que foi morta, tomou a palavra: Eu cheguei a Gabaa de Benjamiml, disse ele, com minha concubina para ali passar a noite.
And behold the men of that city in the night beset the house wherein I was, intending to kill me, and abused my wife with an incredible fury of lust, so that at last she died.5 Os homens de Gabaa, porém, amotinaram-se contra mim e cercaram de noite a casa, querendo matar-me; violentaram a minha concubina, e ela morreu.
And I took her and cut her in pieces, and sent the, parts into all the borders of your possession: because there never was so heinous a crime, and so great an abomination committed in Israel.6 Tomei-a então e cortei-a em pedaços, que mandei distribuir por todo o território da herança de Israel, porque cometeram uma atrocidade e uma infâmia em Israel.
You are all here, O children of Israel, determine what you ought to do.7 Vós todos, ó israelitas que aqui estais, dai o vosso parecer e tomai uma decisão.
And all the people standing, answered as by the voice of one man: We will not return to our tents, neither shall any one of us go into his own house:8 Levantou-se então todo o povo como um só homem, dizendo: Ninguém dentre nós irá à sua tenda, e ninguém voltará à sua casa.
But this we will do in common against Gabaa:9 Eis o que agora vamos fazer a Gabaa: lancemos a sorte contra ela!
We will take ten men of a hundred out of all the tribes of Israel, and a hundred out of a thousand, and a thousand out of ten thousand, to bring victuals for the army, that we might fight against Gabaa of Benjamin, and render to it for its wickedness, what it deserveth.10 Tomemos dentre todas as tribos de Israel dez homens de cada cem, cem de cada mil, e mil de cada dez mil, que irão procurar víveres para o abastecimento do povo. É preciso, quando eles voltarem, tratarmos a Gabaa de Benjamim como ela merece pela infâmia que cometeu em Israel.
And all Israel were gathered together against the city, as one man, with one mind, and one counsel:11 Assim se coligou contra a cidade todo o Israel, como se fora um só homem.
And they sent messengers to all the tribe of Benjamin to say to them: Why hath so great an abomination been found among you?12 Mandaram mensageiros a todas as famílias de Benjamim, para que lhe dissessem: Que maldade é essa que se cometeu no meio de vós?
Deliver up the men of Gabaa, that have committed this heinous crime, that they may die, and the evil may be taken away out of Israel. But they would not hearken to the proposition of their brethren the children of Israel:13 Entregai-nos sem demora os celerados de Gabaa, para que os matemos e tiremos o mal do meio de Israel. Mas os benjaminitas não quiseram dar ouvidos aos seus irmãos israelitas.
But out of all the cities which were of their lot, they gathered themselves together into Gabaa, to aid them, and to fight against the whole people of Israel.14 Juntaram-se em Gabaa de todas as suas cidades para combater os israelitas.
And there were found of Benjamin five and twenty thousand men that drew the sword, besides the inhabitants of Gabaa,15 Contaram-se naquele dia os benjaminitas que acorreram de todas as cidades: vinte e seis mil homens, armados de espada, sem contar os habitantes de Gabaa, que eram setecentos homens de escol.
Who were seven hundred most valiant men, fighting with the left hand as well as with the right: and slinging stones so sure that they could hit even a hair, and not miss by the stone's going on either side.16 Entre todo esse povo havia setecentos homens de escol que não se serviam da mão direita, e todos capazes de atirar pedras com a funda num cabelo, sem errar o alvo.
Of the men of Israel also, beside the children of Benjamin, were found four hundred thousand that drew swords, and were prepared to fight.17 O número de israelitas recenseados, excluindo Benjamim, era de quatrocentos mil homens armados de espada, todos aptos para o combate.
And they arose and came to the house of God, that is, to Silo: and they consulted God, and said: Who shall be in our army the first to go to the battle against the children of Benjamin? And the Lord answered them: Let Juda be your leader.18 Os israelitas subiram a Betel para consultar o Senhor; perguntaram.: Quem de nós subirá primeiro para começar a luta contra os benjaminitas? O Senhor respondeu-lhes: Judá será o primeiro a subir.
And forthwith the children of Israel rising in the morning, camped by Gabaa:19 Partiram os israelitas no dia seguinte pela manhã e acamparam perto de Gabaa.
And going out from thence to fight against Benjamin, began to assault the city.20 Começaram o combate contra os filhos de Benjamim, e puseram-se em ordem de batalha perto da cidade.
And the children of Benjamin coming out of Gabaa, slew of the children of Israel that day two and twenty thousand men.21 Saindo os benjaminitas infligiram a Israel naquele dia uma perda de vinte e dois mil homens, que juncavam o solo.
Again Israel trusting in their strength and their number, set their army in array in the same place, where they had fought before:22 A multidão dos filhos de Israel, recobrando nova coragem, pôs-se outra vez em ordem de batalha no mesmo lugar onde estiveram na véspera.
Yet so that they first went up and wept before the Lord until night: and consulted him, and said: Shall I go out any more to fight against the children of Benjamin my brethren, or not? And he answered them: Go up against them, and join battle.23 Até a tarde estiveram os filhos de Israel chorando diante do Senhor, e o consultaram, dizendo: Devo continuar ainda a combater contra os filhos de Benjamim, meu irmão? O Senhor respondeu: Marchai contra ele.
And when the children of Israel went out the next day to fight against the children of Benjamin,24 Os israelitas avançaram segunda vez contra os benjaminitas,
The children of Benjamin sallied forth out of the gates of Gabaa: and meeting them made so great a slaughter of them, as to kill eighteen thousand men that drew the sword.25 que saíram de Gabaa ao seu encontro e lançaram-nos de novo por terra, matando dezoito mil israelitas, todos homens que manejavam a espada.
Wherefore all the children of Israel came to the house of God, and sat and wept before the Lord: and they fasted that day till the evening, and offered to him holocausts, and victims of peace offerings,26 Então todo o povo dos israelitas subiu a Betel, e ali, sentados, lamentavam-se diante do Senhor, jejuando naquele dia até a tarde; e ofereceram holocaustos e sacrifícios pacíficos diante do Senhor.
And inquired of him concerning their state. At that time the ark of the covenant of the Lord was there,27 E consultaram-no. Naquele tempo a arca da aliança de Deus estava lá, com Finéias, filho de Eleazar, filho de Aarão, que se conservava junto dela.
And Phinees the son of Eleazar the son of Aaron was over the house. So they consulted the Lord and said: Shall we go out any more to fight against the children of Benjamin our brethren, or shall we cease? And the Lord said to them: Go up, for to morrow I will deliver them into your hands.28 Disseram, pois: Devo continuar ou devo cessar a guerra contra Benjamim, meu irmão? O Senhor respondeu: lde, porque amanhã eu os entregarei nas vossas mãos.
And the children of Israel set ambushes round about the city of Gabaa:29 Israel pôs emboscadas em volta de Gabaa e,
And they drew up their army against Benjamin the third time, as they had done the first and second.30 ao terceiro dia, recomeçou o combate contra os benjaminitas na mesma ordem de batalha que antes.
And the children of Benjamin boldly issued out of the city, and seeing their enemies flee, pursued them a long way, so as to wound and kill some of them, as they had done the first and second day, whilst they fled by two highways, whereof one goeth up to Bethel, and the other to Gabaa, and they slew about thirty men:31 Saindo contra eles, os benjaminitas deixaram-se atrair para longe da cidade, e puseram-se, como das outras vezes, a ferir e a matar alguns homens de Israel, uns trinta aproximadamente, nos caminhos que sobem para Betel e para Gabaa através do campo.
For they thought to cut them off, as they did before. But they artfully feigning a flight, designed to draw them away from the city, and by their seeming to flee to bring them to the highways aforesaid.32 Os filhos de Benjamim disseram entre si: Ei-los batidos diante de nós como dantes. Os filhos de Israel, porém, diziam: Fujamos e atraiamo-los para longe da cidade por esses caminhos.
Then all the children of Israel rising up out of the places where they were, set their army in battle array, in the place which is called Baalthamar. The ambushes also which were about the city, began by little and little to come forth,33 Então, saindo todos os israelitas dos seus postos, ordenaram-se em batalha em Baal-Tamar, enquanto os homens de emboscada deixavam os seus esconderijos na planície da Gabaa.
And to march from the west side of the city. And other ten thousand men chosen out of all Israel attacked the inhabitants of the city. And the battle grew hot against the children of Benjamin: and they understood not that present death threatened them on every side.34 Surgiram assim diante de Gabaa dez mil homens de escol do exército de Israel. A batalha foi rude: mas os benjaminitas não supunham que a derrota ia atingi-los.
And the Lord defeated them before the children of Israel, and they slew of them in that day five and twenty thousand, and one hundred, all fighting men and that drew the sword.35 O Senhor destruiu Benjamim à vista dos filhos de Israel, os quais mataram naquele dia vinte e cinco mil e cem benjaminitas, todos homens de armas.
But the children of Benjamin when they saw themselves to be too weak, began to flee. Which the children of Israel seeing, gave them place to flee, that they might come to the ambushes that were prepared, which they had set near the city.36 OS filhos de Benjamim foram derrotados. Os israelitas tinham-lhes cedido terreno para fugir, porque confiavam na emboscada que tinham posto junto de Gabaa.
And they that were in ambush arose on a sudden out of their coverts, and whilst Benjamin turned their backs to the slayers, went into the city, and smote it with the edge of the sword.37 Saindo, pois, os homens dessa emboscada, cercaram a cidade e passaram tudo ao fio da espada.
Now the children of Israel had given a sign to them, whom they had laid in ambushes, that after they had taken the city, they should make a fire: that by the smoke rising on high, they might shew that the city was taken.38 Ora, os homens de Israel tinham combinado com os da emboscada que fizessem subir da cidade como sinal uma nuvem de fumo.
And when the children of Israel saw this in the battle (for the children of Benjamin thought they fled and pursued them vigorously, killing thirty men of their army)39 Os homens de Israel simularam a fuga no combate, e Benjamim pôs-se a ferir e a matar cerca de trinta homens, dizendo: Sem dúvida, estão derrotados diante de nós como no primeiro combate.
And perceived as it were a pillar of smoke rise up from the city; and Benjamin looking back, saw that the city was taken, and that the flames ascended on high:40 Mas quando a nuvem de fumo começou a subir da cidade, os benjaminitas olharam para trás e viram o incêndio de Gabaa subir até o céu.
They that before had made as if they fled, turning their faces stood bravely against them; which the children of Benjamin seeing, turned their backs,41 Os homens de Israel deram volta e os benjaminitas ficaram pasmados ante o desastre que vinha sobre eles.
And began to go towards the way of the desert, the enemy pursuing them thither also. And they that fired the city came also out to meet them.42 Voltaram as costas diante dos israelitas e tomaram o caminho do deserto; o exército, porém, os perseguiu de perto, e os das cidades foram massacrados cada um em seu próprio lugar.
And so it was, that they were slain on both sides by the enemies, and there was no rest of their men dying. They fell and were beaten down on the east side of the city Gabaa.43 Cercaram os benjaminitas, perseguiram-nos e esmagaram-nos em todas as suas paragens até defronte de Gabaa, para as bandas do levante.
And they that were slain in the same place were eighteen thousand men, all most valiant soldiers.44 Dessa sorte, caíram dezoito mil valentes guerreiros benjaminitas,
And when they that remained of Benjamin saw this, they fled into the wilderness and made towards the rock that is called Remmon. In that flight, also as they were straggling and going different ways, they slew of them five thousand men. And as they went farther, they still pursued them, and slew also other two thousand.45 enquanto o resto se pôs a fugir para o deserto até o rochedo de Remon. Nessa fuga foram ainda mortos cinco mil homens pelos caminhos; e perseguindo-os de perto até Gedeão, mataram ainda dois mil.
And so it came to pass, that all that were slain of Benjamin in divers places, were five and twenty thousand fighting men, most valiant for war.46 Naquele dia foram mortos vinte e cinco mil homens de Benjamim, guerreiros valentes que manejavam a espada.
And there remained of all the number of Benjamin only six hundred men that were able to escape, and flee to the wilderness: and they abode in the rock Remmon four months.47 Seiscentos homens tinham chegado, em sua fuga para o deserto, ao rochedo de Remon, onde ficaram quatro meses.
But the children of Israel returning, put all the remains of the city to the sword, both men and beasts, and all the cities and villages of Benjamin were consumed with devouring flames.48 {Entrementes}, os israelitas tinham-se voltado contra os filhos de Benjamim e passaram ao fio da espada tudo o que lhes caía nas mãos nas cidades, desde os homens até os animais. Incendiaram também todas as cidades que encontraram.
