1 After the death of Josue the children of Israel consulted the Lord, saying: Who shall go up before us against the Chanaanite, and shall be the leader of the war?	1 - Dopo la morte di Giosuè i figliuoli d'Israele consultarono il Signore dicendo: «Chi salirà davanti a noi contro il Cananeo e sarà il duce della guerra?».
2 And the Lord said: Juda shall go up: behold I have delivered the land into his hands.	2 Il Signore rispose: «Ascenderà Giuda; ecco io ho dato il paese nelle sue mani».
3 And Juda said to Simeon his brother: Come up with me into my lot, and fight against the Chanaanite, that I also may go along with thee into thy lot. And Simeon went with him.	3 Giuda allora disse a Simeone suo fratello: «Sali meco nel paese toccatomi in sorte e combatti contro il Cananeo, affinchè anch'io venga con te nella tua eredità». E Simeone se ne andò con lui.
4 And Juda went up, and the Lord delivered the Chanaanite, and the Pherezite into their hands: and they slew of them in Bezec ten thousand men.	4 Salì adunque Giuda e il Signore diede nelle loro mani il Cananeo e il Ferezeo e uccisero in Bezec, diecimila uomini.
5 And they found Adonibezec in Bezec, and fought against him, and they defeated the Chanaanite, and the Pherezite.	5 Trovato Adonibezec in Bezec, combatterono contro di lui e sconfissero il Cananeo e il Ferezeo.
6 And Adonibezec fled: and they pursued after him and took him, and cut off his fingers and toes.	6 Adonibezec prese la fuga, ma essendo stato inseguito e preso, gli furono tagliate le estremità delle mani e dei piedi.
7 And Adonibezec said: Seventy kings having their fingers and toes cut off, gathered up the leavings of the meat under my table: as I have done, so hath God requited me. And they brought him to Jerusalem, and he died there.	7 Disse allora Adonibezec: «Settanta re con le estremità delle mani e dei piedi amputate raccoglievano sotto la mia mensa l'avanzo dei cibi come ho fatto, così mi venne reso da Dio». Venne poi condotto a Gerusalemme, dove morì.
8 And the children of Juda besieging Jerusalem, took it, and put it to the sword, and set the whole city on fire.	8 Avendo poi i figli di Giuda assediato Gerusalemme, la presero, ne passarono a fil di spada gli abitanti e diedero fuoco a tutta la città.
9 And afterwards they went down and fought against the Chanaanite, who dwelt in the mountains, and in the south, and in the plains.	9 Quindi scesero a combattere contro il Cananeo, che abitava fra le montagne a mezzogiorno e nelle pianure
10 And Juda going forward against the Chanaanite, that dwelt in Hebron (the name whereof was in former times Cariath-Arbe) slew Sesai, and Ahiman, and Tholmai:	10 e movendo Giuda contro il Cananeo, che abitava in Ebron, il cui nome anticamente era Cariat Arbe, sconfisse Sesai, Aiman e Tolmai:
11 And departing from thence he went to the inhabitants of Dabir, the ancient name of which was Cariath-Sepher, that is, the city of letters.	11 poi partito di là, se ne andò dagli abitanti di Dabir, chiamata in antico Cariat Sefer, cioè Città delle lettere.
12 And Caleb said: He that shall take Cariath-Sepher, and lay it waste, to him will I give my daughter Axa to wife.	12 Caleb disse: «A colui che abbatterà Cariat Sefer e la devasterà darò in moglie la mia figlia Axa».
13 And Othoniel the son of Cenez, the younger brother of Caleb, having taken it, he gave him Axa his daughter to wife.	13 Avendo presa la città, Otoniele figliuolo di Cenez fratello minore di Caleb, gli diede in moglie la figlia Axa.
14 And as she was going on her way her husband admonished her to ask a field of her father. And as she sighed sitting on her ass, Caleb said to her: What aileth thee?	14 Mentre facevano strada insieme il marito le consigliò di chiedere al padre un campo; essa perciò stando a sedere su un asino, si mise a sospirare e a Caleb che le aveva chiesto che cosa avesse,
15 But she answered: Give me a blessing, for thou hast given me a dry land: give me also a watery land. So Caleb gave her the upper and the nether watery ground.	15 rispose: «Fammi un regalo: poichè mi hai dato un territorio asciutto, dammene anche uno irriguo». E Caleb le diede un campo irriguo superiore e un campo irriguo inferiore.
16 And the children of the Cinite, the kinsman of Moses, went up from the city of palms, with the children of Juda into the wilderness of his lot, which is at the south side of Arad, and they dwelt with him.	16 I figli del Cineo, parente di Mosè, ascesero dalla città delle palme coi figli di Giuda verso il deserto appartenente a costui e che sta a mezzogiorno di Arad, e abitarono insieme.
17 And Juda went with Simeon his brother, and they together defeated the Chanaanites that dwelt in Sephaath, and slew them. And the name of the city was called Horma, that is, Anathema.	17 Giuda poi se ne andò col fratello Simeone e insieme sconfissero il Cananeo che abitava in Sefaat e lo uccisero. Questa città venne chiamata Orma, cioè anatema.
18 And Juda took Gaza with its confines, and Ascalon and Accaron with their confines.	18 Prese ancora Giuda la città di Gaza col suo territorio e parimenti Ascalone e Accaron col loro territorio
19 And the Lord was with Juda, and he possessed the hill country: but was not able to destroy the inhabitants of the valley, because they had many chariots armed with scythes.	19 e il Signore fu con Giuda che possedette tutta la parte montuosa, ma non potè sterminare gli abitanti della pianura, perchè abbondavano di carri falcati.
20 And they gave Hebron to Caleb, as Moses had said, who destroyed out of it the three sons of Enac.	20 Ebron fu data a Caleb giusta la parola di Mosè, e Caleb vi sterminò i tre figli di Enac.
21 But the sons of Benjamin did not destroy the Jebusites that inhabited Jerusalem: and the Jebusite hath dwelt with the sons of Benjamin in Jerusalem until this present day.	21 I figli di Beniamino invece non sterminarono il Jebuseo, abitante di Gerusalemme, e il Jebuseo continuò ad abitare in Gerusalemme coi figli di Beniamino fino a questo giorno.
22 The house of Joseph also went up against Bethel, and the Lord was with them.	22 Anche la casa di Giuseppe ascese in Betel e il Signore fu con essi
23 For when they were besieging the city, which before was called Luza,	23 perchè assediando la città, che prima si chiamava Luza,
24 They saw a man coming out of the city, and they said to him: Shew us the entrance into the city, and we will shew thee mercy.	24 videro un uomo uscire dalla città e avendogli detto: «Mostraci l'entrata della città e ti useremo misericordia»,
25 And when he had shewn them, they smote the city with the edge of the sword: but that man and all his kindred they let go:	25 egli la mostrò loro ed essi passarono la città a fil di spada lasciando in vita quell'uomo e la parentela di lui,
26 Who being sent away, went into the land of Hethim, and built there a city, and called it Luza: which is so called until this day.	26 il quale andatosene nella terra degli Hettim vi edificò una città che chiamò Luza, nome ch'essa porta anche oggi.
27 Manasses also did not destroy Bethsan, and Thanac with their villages, nor the inhabitants of Dor, and Jeblaam, and Mageddo with their villages. And the Chanaanite began to dwell with them.	27 Anche Manasse non sterminò Betsan e Tanac coi loro villaggi e neppure gli abitanti di Dor, di Jeblaam, e di Mageddo coi loro villaggi, ma il Cananeo prese ad abitare con essi;
28 But after Israel was grown strong he made them tributaries, and would not destroy them.	28 e quando Israele si fu consolidato li fece tributarii ma non li volle sterminare.
29 Ephraim also did not slay the Chanaanite that dwelt in Gazer, but dwelt with him.	29 Neppur Efraim sterminò il Cananeo che abitava in Gazer ma abitò seco lui.
30 Zabulon destroyed not the inhabitants of Cetron, and Naalol: but the Chanaanite dwelt among them, and became their tributaries.	30 Zabulon non sterminò gli abitanti di Cetron e Naalol, ma il Cananeo abitò in mezzo a lui e gli divenne tributario.
31 Aser also destroyed not the inhabitants of Accho, and of Sidon, of Ahalab, and of Achazib, and of Helba, and of Aphec, and of Rohob:	31 Anche Aser non sterminò gli abitanti di Acco, di Sidone, di Aalab, di Acazib, di Elba, di Afec e di Roob,
32 And he dwelt in the midst of the Chanaanites the inhabitants of that land, and did not slay them.	32 ma abitò insieme coi Cananei che stavano in quella terra e non li uccise.
33 Nephtali also destroyed not the inhabitants of Bethsames, and of Bethanath: and he dwelt in the midst of the Chanaanites the inhabitants of the land, and the Bethsamites and Bethanites were tributaries to him.	33 Anche Neftali non sterminò gli abitanti di Betsames e Betanat, ma abitò col Cananeo, che vi si trovava, e i Betsamiti e i Betaniti gli furono tributarii.
34 And the Amorrhite straitened the children of Dan in the mountain, and gave them not place to go down to the plain:	34 L'Amorreo spinse sulla montagna i figli di Dan nè li lasciò discendere nella pianura
35 And he dwelt in the mountain Hares, that is, of potsherds, in Aialon and Salebim. And the hand of the house of Joseph was heavy upon him, and he became tributary to him.	35 ed egli abitò sul monte Ares, che significa argilloso, in Ajalon e in Salebim; ma la mano della casa di Giuseppe pesò sopra di essi e divennero poi tributarii.
36 And the border of the Amorrhite was from the ascent of the scorpion, the rock, and the higher places.	36 Il territorio degli Amorrei estendevasi dalla Salita dello Scorpione fino a Petra e al di sopra di essi.
