1 Now When these things were heard of, all the kings beyond the Jordan, that dwelt in the mountains and in the plains, in the places near the sea, and on the coasts of the great sea, they also that dwell by Libanus, the Hethite and the Amorrhite, the Chanaanite, the Pherezite, and the Hevite, and the Jebusite,	1 Davon hörten alle Könige jenseits des Jordan, auf dem Gebirge, in der Schefela und an der ganzen Küste des großen Meeres bis hin zum Libanon: die Hetiter, die Amoriter, die Kanaaniter, die Perisiter, die Hiwiter und die Jebusiter.
2 Gathered themselves together, to fight against Josue and Israel with one mind, and one resolution.	2 Sie taten sich zusammen, um gemeinsam gegen Josua und Israel den Kampf aufzunehmen.
3 But they that dwelt in Gabaon, hearing all that Josue had done to Jericho and Hai:	3 Als die Einwohner von Gibeon erfuhren, was Josua mit Jericho und Ai gemacht hatte,
4 Cunningly devising took for themselves provisions, laying old sacks upon their asses, and wine bottles rent and sewed up again,	4 griffen sie zu einer List. Sie versahen sich mit Verpflegung, packten alte Säcke und alte, brüchige und geflickte Weinschläuche auf ihre Esel und machten sich damit auf den Weg.
5 And very old shoes, which for a show of age were clouted with patches, and old garments upon them: the leaves also, which they carried for provisions by the way, were hard, and broken into pieces:	5 Sie zogen alte, geflickte Schuhe und alte Mäntel an. Das ganze Brot in ihrem Vorrat war trocken und krümelig.
6 And they went to Josue, who then abode in the camp at Galgal, and said to him, and to all Israel with him: We are come from a far country, desiring to make peace with you. And the children of Israel answered them, and said:	6 So zogen sie zu Josua ins Lager nach Gilgal und sagten zu ihm und zu den Israeliten: Wir kommen aus einem fernen Land. Schließt doch einen Vertrag mit uns!
7 Perhaps you dwell in the land which falls to our lot; if so, we can make no league with you.	7 Da antworteten die Israeliten den Hiwitern: Vielleicht wohnt ihr mitten in unserem Gebiet. Wie können wir da einen Vertrag mit euch schließen?
8 But they said to Josue: We are thy servants. Josue said to them: Who are you? and whence came you?	8 Sie aber sagten zu Josua: Wir sind deine Knechte. Josua fragte sie: Wer seid ihr und woher kommt ihr?
9 They answered: From a very far country thy servants are come in the name of the Lord thy God. For we have heard the fame of his power, all the things that he did in Egypt.	9 Sie antworteten ihm: Deine Knechte kommen aus einem weit entfernten Land, angezogen vom Ruhm des Herrn, deines Gottes. Wir haben von seinem Ruhm und von allem gehört, was er in Ägypten getan hat,
10 And to the two kings of the Amorrhites that were beyond the Jordan, Sehon king of Hesebon, and Og king of Basan, that was in Astaroth:	10 und auch von allem, was er mit den beiden Königen der Amoriter jenseits des Jordan gemacht hat, mit Sihon, dem König von Heschbon, und mit Og, dem König des Baschan in Aschtarot.
11 And our ancients, and all the inhabitants of our country said to us: Take with you victuals for a long way, and go meet them, and say: We are your servants, make ye a league with us.	11 Da sagten unsere Ältesten und alle Bewohner des Landes zu uns: Nehmt Verpflegung für unterwegs mit, zieht ihnen entgegen und sagt zu ihnen: Wir sind eure Knechte. Nun schließt mit uns einen Vertrag!
12 Behold, these leaves we took hot, when we set out from our houses to come to you, now they are become dry, and broken in pieces, by being exceeding old.	12 Unser Brot hier war noch warm, als wir es aus unseren Häusern als Vorrat mitnahmen an dem Tag, als wir uns auf den Weg zu euch machten. Jetzt aber, seht her: Es ist trocken und krümelig.
13 These bottles of wine when we filled them were new, now they are rent and burst. These garments we have on, and the shoes we have on our feet, by reason of the very long journey are worn out, and almost consumed.	13 Auch diese Weinschläuche waren neu, als wir sie füllten; und jetzt, seht her: Sie sind brüchig. Und hier, unsere Mäntel und unsere Schuhe, sie sind durch den weiten Weg ganz abgenützt.
14 They took therefore of their victuals, and consulted not the mouth of the Lord.	14 Da nahmen die Israeliten etwas von der Verpflegung; aber den Mund des Herrn befragten sie nicht.
15 And Josue made peace with them, and entering into a league promised that they should not be slain: the princes also of the multitude swore to them.	15 So gewährte ihnen Josua Frieden und schloss mit ihnen einen Vertrag, sie am Leben zu lassen. Auch die Vorsteher der Gemeinde leisteten ihnen einen Eid.
16 Now three days after the league was made, they heard that they dwelt nigh, and they should be among them.	16 Drei Tage aber, nachdem sie mit ihnen den Vertrag geschlossen hatten, erfuhren sie, dass die Männer aus der Nähe waren und mitten in ihrem Gebiet wohnten.
17 And the children of Israel removed the camp, and came into their cities on the third day, the names of which are Gabaon, and Caphira, and Beroth, and Cariathiarim.	17 Die Israeliten brachen auf und kamen am dritten Tag zu ihren Städten: nach Gibeon, Kefira, Beerot und Kirjat- Jearim.
18 And they slew them not, because the princes of the multitude had sworn in the name of the Lord the God of Israel. Then all the common people murmured against the princes.	18 Aber die Israeliten erschlugen die Einwohner nicht, weil die Vorsteher der Gemeinde ihnen beim Herrn, dem Gott Israels, einen Eid geleistet hatten. Doch die ganze Gemeinde war empört über die Vorsteher.
19 And they answered them: We have sworn to them in the name of the Lord the God of Israel, and therefore we may not touch them.	19 Da sagten alle Vorsteher zu der Gemeinde: Wir haben ihnen beim Herrn, dem Gott Israels, einen Eid geleistet. Darum können wir ihnen nichts tun.
20 But this we mill do to them: Let their lives be saved, lest the wrath of the Lord be stirred up against us, if we should be forsworn.	20 Wir wollen es so mit ihnen machen: Wir werden sie am Leben lassen, damit nicht wegen des Eides, den wir ihnen geschworen haben, ein Zorngericht über uns kommt.
21 But so let them live, as to serve the whole multitude in hewing wood, and bringing in water. As they were speaking these things,	21 Die Vorsteher sagten also zu ihnen: Sie sollen am Leben bleiben. So wurden sie Holzfäller und Wasserträger für die ganze Gemeinde, wie es ihnen die Vorsteher sagten.
22 Josue called the Gabaonites and said to them: Why would you impose upon us, saying: We dwell far off from you, whereas you are in the midst of us?	22 Darauf rief Josua die Gibeoniter und sagte zu ihnen: Warum habt ihr uns getäuscht und gesagt: Wir wohnen sehr weit entfernt von euch, obwohl ihr mitten in unserem Gebiet wohnt?
23 Therefore you shall be under a curse, and your race shall always be hewers of wood, and carriers of water unto the house of my God.	23 Nun seid ihr verflucht; ihr müsst für immer Sklaven, Holzfäller und Wasserträger für das Haus meines Gottes sein.
24 They answered: It was told us thy servants, that the Lord thy God had promised his servant Moses to give you all the land, and to destroy all the inhabitants thereof. Therefore we feared exceedingly and provided for our lives. compelled by the dread we had of you and we took this counsel.	24 Sie antworteten Josua: Deinen Knechten wurde genau berichtet, was Jahwe, dein Gott, seinem Knecht Mose befohlen hat: euch das ganze Land zu geben und alle Bewohner des Landes vor euren Augen zu vernichten. Darum hatten wir große Angst vor euch und fürchteten um unser Leben. Deshalb haben wir das getan.
25 And now we are in thy hand: deal with us as it seemeth good and right unto thee.	25 Jetzt sind wir in deiner Hand. Mach mit uns, was dir gut und recht erscheint.
26 So Josue did as he had said, and delivered them from the hand of the children of Israel, that they should not be slain.	26 Daraufhin tat er Folgendes: Er rettete sie zwar aus der Gewalt der Israeliten, sodass sie sie nicht töteten;
27 And he gave orders in that day that they should be in the service of all the people, and of the altar of the Lord, hewing wood and carrying water, until this present time, in the place which the Lord hath chosen.	27 doch er machte sie an jenem Tag zu Holzfällern und Wasserträgern für die Gemeinde und für den Altar des Herrn an dem Ort, den er erwählen würde. Das sind sie bis zum heutigen Tag geblieben.
