DOUAI-RHEIMSNEW JERUSALEM
Now the feast of the pasch, and of the Azymes was after two days; and the chief priests and the scribes sought how they might by some wile lay hold on him, and kill him.1 It was two days before the Passover and the feast of Unleavened Bread, and the chief priests and thescribes were looking for a way to arrest Jesus by some trick and have him put to death.
But they said: Not on the festival day, lest there should be a tumult among the people.2 For they said, 'It must not be during the festivities, or there wil be a disturbance among the people.'
And when he was in Bethania, in the house of Simon the leper, and was at meat, there came a woman having an alabaster box of ointment of precious spikenard: and breaking the alabaster box, she poured it out upon his head.3 He was at Bethany in the house of Simon, a man who had suffered from a virulent skin-disease; hewas at table when a woman came in with an alabaster jar of very costly ointment, pure nard. She broke the jarand poured the ointment on his head.
Now there were some that had indignation within themselves, and said: Why was this waste of the ointment made?4 Some who were there said to one another indignantly, 'Why this waste of ointment?
For this ointment might have been sold for more than three hundred pence, and given to the poor. And they murmured against her.5 Ointment like this could have been sold for over three hundred denari and the money given to thepoor'; and they were angry with her.
But Jesus said: Let her alone, why do you molest her? She hath wrought a good work upon me.6 But Jesus said, 'Leave her alone. Why are you upsetting her? What she has done for me is a goodwork.
For the poor you have always with you: and whensoever you will, you may do them good: but me you have not always.7 You have the poor with you always, and you can be kind to them whenever you wish, but you wil notalways have me.
She hath done what she could: she is come beforehand to anoint my body for burial.8 She has done what she could: she has anointed my body beforehand for its burial.
Amen, I say to you, wheresoever this gospel shall be preached in the whole world, that also which she hath done, shall be told for a memorial of her.9 In truth I tel you, wherever throughout al the world the gospel is proclaimed, what she has done wilbe told as well, in remembrance of her.'
And Judas Iscariot, one of the twelve, went to the chief priests, to betray him to them.10 Judas Iscariot, one of the Twelve, approached the chief priests with an offer to hand Jesus over tothem.
Who hearing it were glad; and they promised him they would give him money. And he sought how he might conveniently betray him.11 They were delighted to hear it, and promised to give him money; and he began to look for a way ofbetraying him when the opportunity should occur.
Now on the first day of the unleavened bread, when they sacrificed the pasch, the disciples say to him: Whither wilt thou that we go, and prepare for thee to eat the pasch?12 On the first day of Unleavened Bread, when the Passover lamb was sacrificed, his disciples said tohim, 'Where do you want us to go and make the preparations for you to eat the Passover?'
And he sendeth two of his disciples, and saith to them: Go ye into the city; and there shall meet you a man carrying a pitcher of water, follow him;13 So he sent two of his disciples, saying to them, 'Go into the city and you will meet a man carrying apitcher of water. Fol ow him,
And whithersoever he shall go in, say to the master of the house, The master saith, Where is my refectory, where I may eat the pasch with my disciples?14 and say to the owner of the house which he enters, "The Master says: Where is the room for me toeat the Passover with my disciples?"
And he will shew you a large dining room furnished; and there prepare ye for us.15 He wil show you a large upper room furnished with couches, al prepared. Make the preparations forus there.'
And his disciples went their way, and came into the city; and they found as he had told them, and they prepared the pasch.16 The disciples set out and went to the city and found everything as he had told them, and preparedthe Passover.
And when evening was come, he cometh with the twelve.17 When evening came he arrived with the Twelve.
And when they were at table and eating, Jesus saith: Amen I say to you, one of you that eateth with me shall betray me.18 And while they were at table eating, Jesus said, 'In truth I tell you, one of you is about to betray me,one of you eating with me.'
But they began to be sorrowful, and to say to him one by one: Is it I?19 They were distressed and said to him, one after another, 'Not me, surely?'
Who saith to them: One of the twelve, who dippeth with me his hand in the dish.20 He said to them, 'It is one of the Twelve, one who is dipping into the same dish with me.
And the Son of man indeed goeth, as it is written of him: but woe to that man by whom the Son of man shall be betrayed. It were better for him, if that man had not been born.21 Yes, the Son of man is going to his fate, as the scriptures say he will, but alas for that man by whomthe Son of man is betrayed! Better for that man if he had never been born.'
And whilst they were eating, Jesus took bread; and blessing, broke, and gave to them, and said: Take ye. This is my body.22 And as they were eating he took bread, and when he had said the blessing he broke it and gave it tothem. 'Take it,' he said, 'this is my body.'
And having taken the chalice, giving thanks, he gave it to them. And they all drank of it.23 Then he took a cup, and when he had given thanks he handed it to them, and al drank from it,
And he said to them: This is my blood of the new testament, which shall be shed for many.24 and he said to them, 'This is my blood, the blood of the covenant, poured out for many.
Amen I say to you, that I will drink no more of the fruit of the vine, until that day when I shall drink it new in the kingdom of God.25 In truth I tel you, I shal never drink wine any more until the day I drink the new wine in the kingdomof God.'
And when they had said an hymn, they went forth to the mount of Olives.26 After the psalms had been sung they left for the Mount of Olives.
And Jesus saith to them: You will all be scandalized in my regard this night; for it is written, I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep shall be dispersed.27 And Jesus said to them, 'You wil all fal away, for the scripture says: I shal strike the shepherd andthe sheep wil be scattered;
But after I shall be risen again, I will go before you into Galilee.28 however, after my resurrection I shall go before you into Galilee.'
But Peter saith to him: Although all shall be scandalized in thee, yet not I.29 Peter said, 'Even if all fal away, I wil not.'
And Jesus saith to him: Amen I say to thee, to day, even in this night, before the cock crow twice, thou shall deny me thrice.30 And Jesus said to him, 'In truth I tel you, this day, this very night, before the cock crows twice, youwil have disowned me three times.'
But he spoke the more vehemently: Although I should die together with thee, I will not deny thee. And in like manner also said they all.31 But he repeated stil more earnestly, 'If I have to die with you, I wil never disown you.' And they allsaid the same.
And they came to a farm called Gethsemani. And he saith to his disciples: Sit you here, while I pray.32 They came to a plot of land cal ed Gethsemane, and he said to his disciples, 'Stay here while I pray.'
And he taketh Peter and James and John with him; and he began to fear and to be heavy.33 Then he took Peter and James and John with him.
And he saith to them: My soul is sorrowful even unto death; stay you here, and watch.34 And he began to feel terror and anguish. And he said to them, 'My soul is sorrowful to the point ofdeath. Wait here, and stay awake.'
And when he was gone forward a little, he fell flat on the ground; and he prayed, that if it might be, the hour might pass from him.35 And going on a little further he threw himself on the ground and prayed that, if it were possible, thishour might pass him by.
And he saith: Abba, Father, all things are possible to thee: remove this chalice from me; but not what I will, but what thou wilt.36 'Abba, Father!' he said, 'For you everything is possible. Take this cup away from me. But let it be asyou, not I, would have it.'
And he cometh, and findeth them sleeping. And he saith to Peter: Simon, sleepest thou? couldst thou not watch one hour?37 He came back and found them sleeping, and he said to Peter, 'Simon, are you asleep? Had you notthe strength to stay awake one hour?
Watch ye, and pray that you enter not into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.38 Stay awake and pray not to be put to the test. The spirit is wil ing enough, but human nature is weak.'
A going away again, he prayed, saying the same words.39 Again he went away and prayed, saying the same words.
And when he returned, he found them again asleep, (for their eyes were heavy,) and they knew not what to answer him.40 And once more he came back and found them sleeping, their eyes were so heavy; and they couldfind no answer for him.
And he cometh the third time, and saith to them: Sleep ye now, and take your rest. It is enough: the hour is come: behold the Son of man shall be betrayed into the hands of sinners.41 He came back a third time and said to them, 'You can sleep on now and have your rest. It is al over. The hour has come. Now the Son of man is to be betrayed into the hands of sinners.
Rise up, let us go. Behold, he that will betray me is at hand.42 Get up! Let us go! My betrayer is not far away.'
And while he was yet speaking, cometh Judas Iscariot, one of the twelve: and with him a great multitude with swords and staves, from the chief priests and the scribes and the ancients.43 And at once, while he was stil speaking, Judas, one of the Twelve, came up and with him a numberof men armed with swords and clubs, sent by the chief priests and the scribes and the elders.
And he that betrayed him, had given them a sign, saying: Whomsoever I shall kiss, that is he; lay hold on him, and lead him away carefully.44 Now the traitor had arranged a signal with them saying, 'The one I kiss, he is the man. Arrest him,and see he is well guarded when you lead him away.'
And when he was come, immediately going up to him, he saith: Hail, Rabbi; and he kissed him.45 So when the traitor came, he went up to Jesus at once and said, 'Rabbi!' and kissed him.
But they laid hands on him, and held him.46 The others seized him and arrested him.
An one of them that stood by, drawing a sword, struck a servant of the chief priest, and cut off his ear.47 Then one of the bystanders drew his sword and struck out at the high priest's servant and cut off hisear.
And Jesus answering, said to them: Are you come out as to a robber, with swords and staves to apprehend me?48 Then Jesus spoke. 'Am I a bandit,' he said, 'that you had to set out to capture me with swords andclubs?
I was daily with you in the temple teaching, and you did not lay hands on me. But that the scriptures may be fulfilled.49 I was among you teaching in the Temple day after day and you never laid a hand on me. But this isto fulfil the scriptures.'
Then his disciples leaving him, all fled away.50 And they al deserted him and ran away.
And a certain young man followed him, having a linen cloth cast about his naked body; and they laid hold on him.51 A young man fol owed with nothing on but a linen cloth. They caught hold of him,
But he, casting off the linen cloth, fled from them naked.52 but he left the cloth in their hands and ran away naked.
And they brought Jesus to the high priest; and all the priests and the scribes and the ancients assembled together.53 They led Jesus off to the high priest; and all the chief priests and the elders and the scribesassembled there.
And Peter followed him from afar off, even into the court of the high priest; and he sat with the servants at the fire, and warmed himself.54 Peter had followed him at a distance, right into the high priest's palace, and was sitting with theattendants warming himself at the fire.
And the chief priests and all the council sought for evidence against Jesus, that they might put him to death, and found none.55 The chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin were looking for evidence against Jesus in order to havehim executed. But they could not find any.
For many bore false witness against him, and their evidences were not agreeing.56 Several, indeed, brought false witness against him, but their evidence was conflicting.
And some rising up, bore false witness against him, saying:57 Some stood up and submitted this false evidence against him,
We heard him say, I will destroy this temple made with hands, and within three days I will build another not made with hands.58 'We heard him say, "I am going to destroy this Temple made by human hands, and in three daysbuild another, not made by human hands." '
And their witness did not agree.59 But even on this point their evidence was conflicting.
And the high priest rising up in the midst, asked Jesus, saying: Answerest thou nothing to the things that are laid to thy charge by these men?60 The high priest then rose before the whole assembly and put this question to Jesus, 'Have you noanswer to that? What is this evidence these men are bringing against you?'
But he held his peace, and answered nothing. Again the high priest asked him, and said to him: Art thou the Christ the Son of the blessed God?61 But he was silent and made no answer at all. The high priest put a second question to him saying,'Are you the Christ, the Son of the Blessed One?'
And Jesus said to him: I am. And you shall see the Son of man sitting on the right hand of the power of God, and coming with the clouds of heaven.62 'I am,' said Jesus, 'and you wil see the Son of man seated at the right hand of the Power and comingwith the clouds of heaven.'
Then the high priest rending his garments, saith: What need we any further witnesses?63 The high priest tore his robes and said, 'What need of witnesses have we now?
You have heard the blasphemy. What think you? Who all condemned him to be guilty of death.64 You heard the blasphemy. What is your finding?' Their verdict was unanimous: he deserved to die.
And some began to spit on him, and to cover his face, and to buffet him, and to say unto him: Prophesy: and the servants struck him with the palms of their hands.65 Some of them started spitting at his face, hitting him and saying, 'Play the prophet!' And theattendants struck him too.
Now when Peter was in the court below, there cometh one of the maidservants of the high priest.66 While Peter was down below in the courtyard, one of the high priest's servant-girls came up.
And when she had seen Peter warming himself, looking on him she saith: Thou also wast with Jesus of Nazareth.67 She saw Peter warming himself there, looked closely at him and said, 'You too were with Jesus, theman from Nazareth.'
But he denied, saying: I neither know nor understand what thou sayest. And he went forth before the court; and the cock crew.68 But he denied it. 'I do not know, I do not understand what you are talking about,' he said. And hewent out into the forecourt, and a cock crowed.
And again a maidservant seeing him, began to say to the standers by: This is one of them.69 The servant-girl saw him and again started tel ing the bystanders, 'This man is one of them.'
But he denied again. And after a while they that stood by said again to Peter: Surely thou art one of them; for thou art also a Galilean.70 But again he denied it. A little later the bystanders themselves said to Peter, 'You are certainly one ofthem! Why, you are a Galilean.'
But he began to curse and to swear, saying; I know not this man of whom you speak.71 But he started cursing and swearing, 'I do not know the man you speak of.'
And immediately the cock crew again. And Peter remembered the word that Jesus had said unto him: Before the cock crow twice, thou shalt thrice deny me. And he began to weep.72 And at once the cock crowed for the second time, and Peter recalled what Jesus had said to him,'Before the cock crows twice, you will have disowned me three times.' And he burst into tears.
