1 And they went forward and encamped in the plains of Moab, over against where Jericho is situate beyond the Jordan.	1 Les Israélites partirent de là et campèrent dans les Steppes-de-Moab, de l’autre côté du Jourdain, à la hauteur de Jéricho.
2 And Balac the son of Sephor, seeing all that Israel had done to the Amorrhite,	2 Balak, fils de Sipor, vit tout ce qu’Israël avait fait aux Amorites.
3 And that the Moabites were in great fear of him, and were not able to sustain his assault,	3 Les Moabites furent pris d’une grande peur en voyant combien ce peuple était nombreux: c’était l’effroi en Moab à cause d’Israël.
4 He said to the elders of Madian: So will this people destroy all that dwell in our borders, as the ox is wont to eat the grass to the very roots. Now he was at that time king in Moab.	4 Les Moabites dirent donc aux anciens de Madian: “Cette foule va brouter toute la région, comme le bœuf broute l’herbe des champs!” Le roi de Moab était en ce temps-là Balak, fils de Sipor.
5 He sent therefore messengers to Balaam the son of Beer, a soothsayer, who dwelt by the river of the land of the children of Ammon, to call him, and to say: Behold a people is come out of Egypt, that hath covered the face of the earth, sitting over against me.	5 Il envoya chercher Balaam fils de Béor, à Pétor sur le fleuve, au pays des Ammonites. Il l’invita à venir en lui disant: “Un peuple sorti d’Égypte vient de s’étendre sur tout le pays et s’est établi en face de moi.
6 Come therefore, and curse this people, because it is mightier than I: if by any means I may beat them and drive them out of my land: for I know that he whom thou shalt bless is blessed, and he whom thou shalt curse is cursed.	6 Viens donc, je t’en prie, et maudis-moi ce peuple car il est plus puissant que moi. Peut-être alors pourrai-je le battre et le chasser du pays car, je le sais, celui que tu bénis est béni, et celui que tu maudis est maudit!”
7 And the ancients of Moab, and the elders of Madian, went with the price of divination in their hands. And when they were come to Balaam, and had told him all the words of Balac:	7 Les anciens de Moab partirent avec ceux de Madian, les mains pleines de cadeaux pour le devin, et ils arrivèrent chez Balaam. Quand ils lui rapportèrent les paroles de Balak,
8 He answered: Tarry here this night, and I will answer whatsoever the Lord shall say to me. And while they stayed with Balaam, God came and said to him:	8 Balaam leur dit: “Installez-vous chez moi pour la nuit, et je vous donnerai une réponse selon ce que Yahvé me dira.” Les chefs de Moab restèrent donc chez Balaam.
9 What mean these men that are with thee?	9 Dieu vint vers Balaam et lui dit: “Qui sont ces hommes installés chez toi?”
10 He answered: Balac the son of Sephor king of the Moabites hath sent to me,	10 Balaam répondit à Dieu: “Balak, fils de Sipor, roi de Moab, me fait dire ceci:
11 Saying: Behold a people that is come out of Egypt, hath covered the face of the land: come and curse them, if by any means I may fight with them and drive them away.	11 Ce peuple sorti d’Égypte couvre tout le pays. Viens donc et maudis-le moi, peut-être pourrai-je lui résister et le chasser.”
12 And God said to Balaam : Thou shalt not go with them, nor shalt thou curse the people: because it is blessed.	12 Mais Dieu dit à Balaam: “Tu n’iras pas avec eux et tu ne maudiras pas ce peuple, car il est béni.”
13 And he rose in the morning and said to the princes: Go into your country, because the Lord hath forbid me to come with you.	13 Balaam se leva de bon matin et dit aux chefs envoyés par Balak: “Retournez dans votre pays, car Yahvé a refusé de me laisser aller avec vous.”
14 The princes returning, said to Balac: Balaam would not come with us.	14 Les chefs de Moab se levèrent donc et retournèrent vers Balak: “Balaam, dirent-ils, a refusé de venir avec nous!”
15 Then he sent many more and more noble than he had sent before:	15 Balak envoya de nouveau des chefs plus nombreux et plus considérés que les premiers.
16 Who, when they were come to Balaam, said: Thus saith Balac the son of Sephor, Delay not to come to me:	16 Ils arrivèrent chez Balaam et lui dirent: “Voici ce que dit Balak, fils de Sipor: Je t’en prie, ne refuse pas de venir chez moi,
17 For I am ready to honour thee, and will give thee whatsoever thou wilt: come and curse this people.	17 je te traiterai royalement et je ferai tout ce que tu me diras; viens et maudis-moi ce peuple!”
18 Balaam answered: If Balac would give me his house full of silver and gold, I cannot alter the word of the Lord my God, to speak either more or less.	18 Balaam répondit aux serviteurs de Balak: “Même si Balak me donnait plein sa maison d’argent et d’or, je ne désobéirais pas à l’ordre de Yahvé, mon Dieu, que ce soit pour une petite ou pour une grande chose.
19 I pray you to stay here this night also, that I may know what the Lord will answer me once more.	19 Cependant, restez ici cette nuit, s’il vous plaît, pour que je sache ce que Yahvé veut me dire encore!”
20 God therefore came to Balaam in the night, and said to him: It these men be come to call thee, arise and go with them: yet so, that thou do what I shall command thee.	20 Cette nuit-là Dieu vint vers Balaam et lui dit: “Ces hommes sont venus pour t’inviter? Eh bien, pars avec eux, mais tu ne feras que ce que je te dirai!”
21 Balaam arose in the morning, and saddling his ass went with them.	21 Balaam se leva de bon matin, sella son ânesse et partit avec les chefs de Moab.
22 And God was angry. And an angel of the Lord stood in the way against Balaam, who sat on the ass, and had two servants with him.	22 La colère de Dieu s’enflamma contre Balaam alors qu’il était en chemin. L’ange de Yahvé se posta sur le chemin pour lui barrer la route, tandis qu’il venait sur son ânesse accompagné de deux serviteurs.
23 The ass seeing the angel standing in the way, with a drawn sword, turned herself out of the way, and went into the field. And when Balaam beat her, and had a mind to bring her again to the way,	23 L’ânesse vit l’ange de Yahvé qui lui barrait la route, avec son épée dégainée à la main. L’ânesse fit un crochet par les champs et Balaam frappa son ânesse pour la ramener sur le chemin.
24 The angel stood in a narrow place between two walls, wherewith the vineyards were enclosed.	24 Alors l’ange de Yahvé vint se poster dans un chemin creux au milieu des vignes: il y avait une clôture de chaque côté.
25 And the ass seeing him, thrust herself close to the wall, and bruised the foot of the rider. But he beat her again:	25 L’ânesse vit l’ange de Yahvé; elle rasa le mur, écrasant le pied de Balaam contre la clôture, et Balaam la frappa de nouveau.
26 And nevertheless the angel going on to a narrow place, where there was no way to turn aside either to the right hand or to the left, stood to meet him.	26 L’ange de Yahvé revint se poster plus en avant et s’arrêta à un endroit si étroit que l’on ne pouvait lui échapper ni à droite ni à gauche.
27 And when the ass saw the angel standing, she fell under the feet of the rider: who being angry beat her sides more vehemently with a staff.	27 Quand l’ânesse vit l’ange de Yahvé, elle s’accroupit sous Balaam. Balaam, furieux, la frappa de son bâton.
28 And the Lord opened the mouth of the ass, and she said: What have I done to thee? Why strikest thou me, lo, now this third time?	28 Cette fois Yahvé ouvrit la bouche de l’ânesse et elle dit à Balaam: “Que t’ai-je fait pour que tu me frappes par trois fois?”
29 Balaam answered: Because thou hast deserved it, and hast served me ill: I would I had a sword that I might kill thee.	29 Balaam répondit à son ânesse: “Mais tu te moques de moi! Si j’avais une épée à la main, je te tuerais sur-le-champ!”
30 The ass said: Am not I thy beast, on which thou hast been always accustomed to ride until this present day? tell me if I ever did the like thing to thee. But he said: Never.	30 L’ânesse dit à Balaam: “Ne suis-je pas ton ânesse, que tu montes depuis que tu es au monde jusqu’à ce jour? Est-ce que j’ai l’habitude d’agir de la sorte avec toi?” “Certes non!” répondit-il.
31 Forthwith the Lord opened the eyes of Balaam, and he saw the angel standing in the way with a drawn sword, and he worshipped him falling flat on the ground.	31 Alors Yahvé ouvrit les yeux de Balaam: il vit l’ange de Yahvé debout en travers du chemin, son épée dégainée à la main. Il s’agenouilla et se prosterna le nez contre terre.
32 And the angel said to him: Why beatest thou thy ass these three times? I am come to withstand thee, because thy way is perverse, and contrary to me:	32 L’ange de Yahvé lui dit: “Pourquoi as-tu frappé ton ânesse à trois reprises? Je suis venu pour te barrer la route, car ce voyage ne me plaît pas.
33 And unless the ass had turned out of the way, giving place to me who stood against thee, I had slain thee, and she should have lived.	33 L’ânesse m’a vu et à trois reprises s’est détournée de moi. Si elle ne s’était pas détournée, je t’aurais tué sur-le-champ, et elle, je l’aurais laissée en vie.”
34 Balaam said: I have sinned, not knowing that thou didst stand against me: and now if it displease thee that I go, I will return.	34 Balaam dit à l’ange de Yahvé: “J’ai peut-être péché, mais je ne savais pas que tu étais en travers de ma route. Si cela ne te plaît pas, je retourne chez moi.”
35 The angel said: Go with these men, and see thou speak no other thing than what I shall command thee. He went therefore with the princes.	35 L’ange de Yahvé dit alors à Balaam: “Va avec ces messieurs! Mais tu ne diras que les paroles que je te dirai.” Balaam fit donc le chemin avec les chefs envoyés par Balak.
36 And when Balac heard it he came forth to meet him in a town of the Moabites, that is situate in the uttermost borders of Arnon.	36 Lorsque Balak apprit l’arrivée de Balaam, il sortit à sa rencontre à Ar-Moab, sur la frontière de l’Arnon à l’extrémité de son pays.
37 And he said to Balaam: I sent messengers to call thee, why didst thou not come immediately to me? was it because I am not able to reward thy coming?	37 Balak dit à Balaam: “Ne t’avais-je pas envoyé des gens pour t’inviter? Pourquoi n’es-tu pas venu? Tu pensais sans doute que je n’allais pas bien te payer?”
38 He answered him: Lo, here I am: shall I have power to speak any other thing but that which God shall put in my mouth?	38 Balaam répondit à Balak: “Tu vois que j’arrive chez toi, mais que puis-je dire maintenant? Seulement les paroles que Dieu mettra dans ma bouche!”
39 So they went on together, and came into a city, that was in the uttermost borders of his kingdom.	39 Balaam s’en alla donc avec Balak et ils arrivèrent à Kiryat-Housot.
40 And when Balac had killed oxen and sheep, he sent presents to Balaam, and to the princes that were with him.	40 Balak sacrifia du gros et du petit bétail et en fit porter à Balaam et aux chefs venus avec lui.
41 And when morning was come, he brought him to the high places of Baal, and he beheld the uttermost part of the people.	41 Dès le matin Balak vint chercher Balaam et le fit monter à Bamot-Baal, car de là il pouvait voir une partie du peuple.
