1 Now there was a man that dwelt in Babylon, and his name was Joakim:	1 Lakott Babilonban egy férfi, akit Joakimnak hívtak.
2 And he took a wife whose name was Susanna, the daughter of Helcias, a very beautiful woman, and one that feared God.	2 Helkijának Zsuzsanna nevű leányát vette feleségül, aki igen szép és istenfélő volt,
3 For her parents being just, had instructed their daughter according to the law of Moses.	3 mert szülei, akik igazak voltak, leányukat Mózes törvénye szerint nevelték.
4 Now Joakim was very rich, and had an orchard near his house: and the Jews resorted to him, because he was the most honourable of them all.	4 Joakim igen gazdag volt; a háza szomszédságában gyümölcsös kertje is volt, és nála jöttek össze a zsidók, mert mindnyájuknál tekintélyesebb volt.
5 And there were two of the ancients of the people appointed judges that year, of whom the Lord said: Iniquity came out from Babylon from the ancient judges, that seemed to govern the people.	5 Abban az esztendőben két olyan vént tettek a népből bíróvá, akikre ráillett az Úr mondása: A vénektől indult ki a gonoszság Babilonból, a bíráktól, akik a népet kormányozni látszottak.
6 These men frequented the house of Joakim, and all that had any matters of judgment came to them.	6 Ezek Joakim házába mentek, és odajárultak mindazok, akiknek pörös ügyük volt.
7 And when the people departed away at noon, Susanna went in, and walked in her husband's orchard.	7 Mikor aztán déltájban a nép hazatért, Zsuzsanna bement sétálni férjének gyümölcsöskertjébe.
8 And the old men saw her going in every day, and walking: and they were inflamed with lust towards her:	8 A vének naponként látták őt, amint bement és sétált, és kívánságra gerjedtek iránta;
9 And they perverted their own mind and turned away their eyes that they might not look unto heaven, nor remember just judgments.	9 értelmüket elfordították és szemüket lesütötték, hogy ne lássák az eget és meg ne emlékezzenek az igazságos ítéletekről.
10 So they were both wounded with the love of her, yet they did not make known their grief one to the other:	10 Mindkettőjüket megsebezte az ő szerelme, de nem mondták el bajukat egymásnak,
11 For they were ashamed to declare to one another their lust, being desirous to have to do with her.	11 mert szégyellték egymásnak elmondani vágyukat, hogy le akarnak feküdni vele.
12 And they watched carefully every day to see her. And one said to the other:	12 Napról napra figyelmesebben leselkedtek, hogy lássák őt. Egyszer az egyikük azt mondta a másiknak:
13 Let us now go home, for it is dinner time. So going out they departed one from another.	13 »Menjünk haza, mert itt az ebéd ideje.« El is mentek és elváltak egymástól,
14 And turning back again, they came both to the same place: and asking one another the cause, they acknowledged their lust; and then they agreed upon a time, when they might find her alone.	14 de visszatértek és találkoztak. Mikor megkérdezték egymástól ennek az okát, beismerték a vágyukat. Ekkor közösen megegyeztek az időpontban, amikor egyedül tudják őt találni.
15 And it fell out, as they watched a fit day, she went in on a time, as yesterday and the day before, with two maids only, and was desirous to wash herself in the orchard: for it was hot weather.	15 Történt pedig egyszer, miközben ők az alkalmas napot várták, hogy ő megint lement, éppúgy, mint azelőtt, csupán két szolgálóleányával, és fürödni akart a gyümölcsös kertben, mert hőség volt.
16 And there was nobody there, but the two old men that had hid themselves and were beholding her.	16 Nem volt ott senki sem, csak a két vén, akik elrejtőzve lesték őt.
17 So she said to the maids: Bring me oil, and washing balls, and shut the doors of the orchard, that I may wash me.	17 Azt mondta tehát szolgálóinak: »Hozzatok nekem olajat és kenőcsöket, és zárjátok be a gyümölcsöskert ajtóit, hogy megfürödhessem.«
18 And they did as she bade them: and they shut the doors of the orchard, and went out by a back door to fetch what she had commanded them, and they knew not that the elders were hid within.	18 Azok úgy cselekedtek, ahogy parancsolta. Bezárták a gyümölcsöskert ajtóit, és kimentek a hátsó ajtón, hogy elhozzák, amit parancsolt. Nem tudták, hogy a vének bent rejtőzködnek.
19 Now when the maids were gone forth, the two elders arose, and ran to her, and said:	19 Amikor a szolgálók kimentek, a két vén felkelt, odafutott és így szólt:
20 Behold the doors of the orchard are shut, and nobody seeth us, and we are in love with thee: wherefore consent to us, and lie with us.	20 »Íme, a gyümölcsöskert ajtajai be vannak zárva, senki sem lát minket, mi pedig kívánunk téged. Engedj tehát nekünk és feküdj le velünk.
21 But if thou wilt not, we will bear witness against thee, that a young man was with thee, and therefore thou didst send away thy maids from thee.	21 Ha azonban nem akarod ezt, tanúskodni fogunk ellened, hogy egy ifjú volt veled, azért küldted el magadtól a szolgálókat.«
22 Susanna sighed, and said: I am straitened on every side: for if I do this thing, it is death to me: and if I do it not, I shall not escape your hands.	22 Zsuzsanna ekkor felsóhajtott, és azt mondta: »Szorongatás vesz körül mindenfelől, mert ha ezt megteszem, a halálomat jelenti, ha pedig nem teszem meg, nem menekülök meg a kezetekből.
23 But it is better for me to fall into your hands without doing it, than to sin in the sight of the Lord.	23 De jobb nekem a ti kezetekbe esnem, anélkül, hogy valamit elkövetnék, mintsem vétkeznem az Úr színe előtt.«
24 With that Susanna cried out with a loud voice: and the elders also cried out against her.	24 Erre Zsuzsanna hangosan kiáltozni kezdett, mire a vének is kiáltozni kezdtek ellene,
25 And one of them ran to the door of the orchard, and opened it.	25 sőt az egyik odafutott a gyümölcsöskert ajtajához és kinyitotta.
26 So when the servants of the house heard the cry in the orchard, they rushed in by the back door to see what was the matter.	26 Amikor a ház szolgái meghallották a kiáltozást a gyümölcsöskertben, berohantak a hátsó ajtón, hogy megnézzék, mi az?
27 But after the old men had spoken, the servants were greatly ashamed: for never had there been any such word said of Susanna. And on the next day,	27 Miután a vének elmondták, a szolgák igen elszégyellték magukat, mert sohasem mondott még valaki ilyesmit Zsuzsannáról. Mikor aztán másnap
28 When the people were come to Joakim her husband, the two elders also came full of wicked device against Susanna, to put her to death.	28 a nép elment Joakimhoz, a férjéhez, odament a két vén is, telve gonosz szándékkal Zsuzsanna ellen, hogy kivégeztessék őt.
29 And they said before the people: Send to Susanna daughter of Helcias the wife of Joakim. And presently they sent.	29 Azt mondták a nép előtt: »Küldjetek el Zsuzsannáért, Helkija leányáért, Joakim feleségéért.« Erre rögtön érte küldtek,
30 And she came with her parents, and children, and all her kindred.	30 ő pedig eljött szüleivel, fiaival és egész rokonságával együtt.
31 Now Susanna was exceeding delicate, and beautiful to behold.	31 Zsuzsannának igen kedves és szép arca volt,
32 But those wicked men commanded that her face should be uncovered, (for she was covered,) that so at least they might be satisfied with her beauty.	32 ezért azok a gonoszok meghagyták, vegyék le fátyolát – le volt ugyanis fátyolozva –, hogy legalább így jóllakhassanak szépségével.
33 Therefore her friends and all her acquaintance wept.	33 Sírtak tehát az övéi és mindnyájan, akik ismerték őt.
34 But the two elders rising up in the midst of the people, laid their hands upon her head.	34 Aztán felkelt a két vén a nép között, és rátette kezét az asszony fejére.
35 And she weeping looked up to heaven, for her heart had confidence in the Lord.	35 Erre az sírva az égre tekintett, mert szíve bizalommal volt az Úr iránt.
36 And the elders said: As we walked in the orchard alone, this woman came in with two maids, and shut the doors of the orchard, and sent away the maids from her.	36 A vének ezt mondták: »Mialatt mi egyedül sétáltunk a gyümölcsöskertben, ő bejött két szolgálóleánnyal, bezárta a gyümölcsöskert ajtóit, és elküldte magától a szolgálókat.
37 Then a young man that was there hid came to her, and lay with her.	37 Ekkor odament hozzá egy ifjú, aki el volt rejtőzve, és lefeküdt vele.
38 But we that were in a corner of the orchard, seeing this wickedness, ran up to them, and we saw them lie together.	38 Erre mi, akik a gyümölcsöskert szegletében voltunk, látva a gonoszságot, odarohantunk hozzájuk, és láttuk, amint együtt feküdtek.
39 And him indeed we could not take, because he was stronger than us, and opening the doors be leaped out:	39 Azt ugyan nem tudtuk elfogni, mert erősebb volt mint mi, és kinyitotta az ajtót és elfutott;
40 But having taken this woman, we asked who the young man was, but she would not tell us: of this thing we are witnesses.	40 de őt megfogtuk. Meg is kérdeztük, hogy ki volt az az ifjú, de nem akarta nekünk megmondani. Ennek a dolognak tanúi vagyunk.«
41 The multitude believed them as being the elders and the judges of the people, and they condemned her to death.	41 Hitt nekik a sokaság, mint a nép véneinek és bíráinak, és halálra ítélték Zsuzsannát.
42 Then Susanna cried out with a loud voice, and said: O eternal God, who knowest hidden things, who knowest all things before they come to pass,	42 Ekkor Zsuzsanna hangosan felkiáltva így szólt: »Örök Isten, aki látod, ami titokban történik, és tudsz mindent, mielőtt megtörténne,
43 Thou knowest that they have borne false witness against me: and behold I must die, whereas I have done none of these things, which these men have maliciously forged against me.	43 te tudod, hogy hamis tanúságot tettek ellenem. Íme, meg kell halnom, noha semmit sem követtem el mindabból, amit ezek gonoszul rámfogtak.«
44 And the Lord heard her voice.	44 Az Úr meghallgatta a szavát.
45 And when she was led to be put to death, the Lord raised up the holy spirit of a young boy, whose name was Daniel.	45 Amikor ugyanis kivégzésre vitték, az Úr fölkeltette egy fiatalember szent lelkét, akinek a neve Dániel volt.
46 And he cried out with a loud voice I am clear from the blood of this woman.	46 Ez hangosan így kiáltott: »Én mentes vagyok ennek a vérétől.«
47 Then all the people turning themselves towards him, said: What meaneth this word that thou hast spoken?	47 Feléje fordult erre az egész nép, és így szólt: »Mi az, amit mondasz?«
48 But he standing in the midst of them, said: Are ye so foolish, ye children of Israel, that without examination or knowledge of the truth, you have condemned a daughter of Israel?	48 Ekkor ő megállt közöttük és azt mondta: »Izrael fiai, ti ilyen oktalanul, anélkül, hogy vizsgálatot tartanátok és az igazságot megállapítanátok, elítélitek Izraelnek egyik leányát?
49 Return to judgment, for they have borne false witness against her.	49 Térjetek vissza az ítélet helyére, mert hamis tanúságot mondtak ellene!«
50 So all the people turned again in haste, and the old men said to him: Come, and sit thou down among us, and shew it as: seeing God hath given thee the honour of old age.	50 Erre a nép sietve visszatért, a vének pedig kérték: »Gyere, ülj közénk és oktass minket, mert Isten megadta neked az időskor dicsőségét.«
51 And Daniel said to the people: Separate these two far from one another, and I will examine them.	51 Dániel azonban azt mondta nekik: »Válasszátok el őket egymástól jó messzire, hadd ítéljek felettük.«
52 So when they were put asunder one from the other, he called one of them, and said to him: O thou that art grown old in evil days, now are thy sins come out, which thou hast committed before:	52 Mikor elválasztották őket egymástól, odahívta közülük az egyiket és azt mondta neki: »Te megátalkodott vén gonosztevő! Most jött el azoknak a bűneidnek a büntetése, amiket a múltban elkövettél,
53 In judging unjust judgments, oppressing the innocent, and letting the guilty to go free, whereas the Lord saith: I The innocent and the just thou shalt not kill.	53 amikor igazságtalan ítéleteket hoztál, elnyomtad az ártatlanokat és szabadon eresztetted a bűnösöket, noha az Úr azt mondta: ‘Az ártatlant és az igazat meg ne öld!’
54 Now then, if thou sawest her, tell me under what tree thou sawest them conversing together. He said: Under a mastic tree.	54 Nos tehát, ha láttad őt, mondd meg, milyen fa alatt láttad őket egymással beszélgetni?« Ő azt felelte: »Mézgafa alatt.«
55 And Daniel said: Well hast thou lied against thy own head: for behold the angel of God having received the sentence of him, shall cut thee in two.	55 Dániel pedig azt mondta: »Lám, saját fejed ellen követted el a hazugságot, mert íme, Isten angyala az ő parancsára kettéhasít téged!«
56 And having put him aside, he commanded that the other should come, and he said to him: O thou seed of Chanaan, and not of Juda, beauty hath deceived thee, and lust hath perverted thy heart:	56 Aztán félreállította őt, és odahozatta a másikat és megkérdezte tőle: »Te Kánaánnak és nem Júdának ivadéka! A szépség elvette eszedet, és a vágy megrontotta szívedet.
57 Thus did you do to the daughters of Israel, and they for fear conversed with you: but a daughter of Juda would not abide your wickedness.	57 Így cselekedtetek Izrael leányaival, azok pedig félve szóba álltak veletek. Júda leánya azonban nem engedett gonoszságtoknak.
58 Now therefore tell me, under what tree didst thou take them conversing together., And he answered: Under a holm tree.	58 Nos tehát, mondd meg nekem, milyen fa alatt kaptad rajta őket, amikor egymással beszélgettek?« Az ezt válaszolta: »Tölgyfa alatt.«
59 And Daniel said to him: Well hast thou also lied against thy own head: for the angel of the Lord waiteth with a sword to cut thee in two, and to destroy you.	59 Dániel erre azt mondta neki: »Valóban te is a saját fejedre hazudtál; itt van kardjával az Úr angyala, hogy kettévágjon téged és megöljön titeket!«
60 With that all the assembly cried out with a loud voice, and they blessed God, who saveth them that trust in him.	60 Ekkor az egész gyülekezet nagy hangon felkiáltott. Áldották Istent, aki megmenti a benne bízókat.
61 And they rose up against the two elders, (for Daniel had convicted them of false witness by their own mouth,) and they did to them as they had maliciously dealt against their neighbour,	61 Aztán rárontottak a két vénre – mert Dániel a saját szájukból rájuk bizonyította, hogy hamis tanúságot mondtak –, és úgy cselekedtek velük, ahogy ők cselekedtek gonoszságukban felebarátjuk ellen,
62 To fulfil the law of Moses: and they put them to death, and innocent blood was saved in that day.	62 Mózes törvénye szerint járva el: megölték őket, s az ártatlan vér megszabadult azon a napon.
63 But Helcias and his wife praised God, for their daughter Susanna, with Joakim her husband, and all her kindred, because there was no dishonesty found in her.	63 Helkija pedig és felesége dicsőítették Istent leányukért, Zsuzsannáért Joakimmal, a férjével és az összes rokonával együtt, hogy nem találtak benne szégyenletes dolgot.
64 And Daniel became great in the sight of the people from that day, and thenceforward.	64 Dániel pedig ettől a naptól fogva és azóta naggyá lett a nép előtt.
65 And king Astyages was gathered to his fathers, and Cyrus the Persian received his kingdom.
