Unto the end, for them that shall be changed, for the inscription of a title, to David himself, for doctrine, | 1 For the leader; according to "The Lily of...." A miktam of David (for teaching), |
when he set fire to Mesopotamia of Syria and Sobal and Joab returned and slew of Edom, in the vale of the saltpits, twelve thousand men. | 2 when he fought against Aram-Naharaim and Aram-Zobah; and Joab, coming back, killed twelve thousand Edomites in the Valley of Salt. |
O God, thou hast cast us off, and hast destroyed us; thou hast been angry, and hast had mercy on us. | 3 O God, you rejected us, broke our defenses; you were angry but now revive us. |
Thou hast moved the earth, and hast troubled it: heal thou the breaches thereof, for it has been moved. | 4 You rocked the earth, split it open; repair the cracks for it totters. |
Thou hast shewn thy people hard things; thou hast made us drink wine of sorrow. | 5 You made your people go through hardship, made us stagger from the wine you gave us. |
Thou hast given a warning to them that fear thee: that they may flee from before the bow: That thy beloved may be delivered. | 6 Raise up a flag for those who revere you, a refuge for them out of bow shot. Selah |
Save me with thy right hand, and hear me. | 7 Help with your right hand and answer us that your loved ones may escape. |
God hath spoken in his holy place: I will rejoice, and I will divide Sichem; and will mete out the vale of tabernacles. | 8 In the sanctuary God promised: "I will exult, will apportion Shechem; the valley of Succoth I will measure out. |
Galaad is mine, and Manasses is mine: and Ephraim is the strength of my head. Juda is my king: | 9 Gilead is mine, mine is Manasseh; Ephraim is the helmet for my head, Judah, my own scepter. |
Moab is the pot of my hope. Into Edom will I stretch out my shoe: to me the foreigners are made subject. | 10 Moab is my washbowl; upon Edom I cast my sandal. I will triumph over Philistia." |
Who will bring me into the strong city? who will lead me into Edom? | 11 Who will bring me to the fortified city? Who will lead me into Edom? |
Wilt not thou, O God, who hast cast us off? and wilt not thou, O God, go out with our armies? | 12 Was it not you who rejected us, God? Do you no longer march with our armies? |
Give us help from trouble: for vain is the salvation of man. | 13 Give us aid against the foe; worthless is human help. |
Through God we shall do mightily: and he shall bring to nothing them that afflict us. | 14 We will triumph with the help of God, who will trample down our foes. |
