1 have from heaven, but for the laws of God I now despise them: because I hope to receive them again from him.	1 Giuda Maccabeo veramente, e quegli che con lui erano, nascosamente entravano nelle castella; convocando gli parenti e amici, e coloro ch' erano rimasi fermi nella legge (e fede) giudaica, congregandogli, li trassono a sè, e furono sei milia uomini (forti).
2 But one of them, who was the eldest, said thus: What wouldst thou ask, or learn of us? we are ready to die rather than to transgress the laws of God, received from our fathers.	2 E invocavano il Signore, pregandolo che riguardasse il suo popolo il quale veniva conculcato dagli uomini, e ch' egli avesse misericordia al templo (suo santo), contaminato (e violato) dalli malvagi.
3 Then the king being angry commanded fryingpans, and brazen caldrons to be made hot: which forthwith being heated,	3 Avesse anche misericordia del grande esterminio della città, la qual sùbito era per esser spianata (e ruinata), e udisse (anche) la voce del sangue (cioè degli uccisi) i quali gridavano a lui;
4 He commanded to cut out the tongue of him that had spoken first: and the skin of his head being drawn off, to chop off also the extremities of his hands and feet, the rest of his brethren, and his mother, looking on.	4 esorandolo etiam ch' egli si ricordasse della iniquissima morte degl' innocenti piccolini, e delle blasfemie fatte al suo (glorioso) nome, e che sopra tutte queste cose lo eccitasse il suo furore.
5 And when he was now maimed in all parts, he commanded him, being yet alive, to be brought to the Are, and to be fried in the fryingpan: and while he was suffering therein long torments, the rest, together with the mother, exhorted one another to die manfully,	5 Ma il Maccabeo, per la moltitudine ch' egli avea congregata, era fatto spaventoso e orribile alle genti; per che la ira del Signore era mutata in misericordia.
6 Saying: The Lord God will look upon the truth, and will take pleasure in us, as Moses declared in the profession of the canticle: And In his servants he will take pleasure.	6 E sopravenendo lui alli castelli e cittadi, infiammava li animi loro; e occupando li luoghi opportuni, faceva grande isconfitta nelli inimici.
7 So when the first was dead after this manner, they brought the next to make him a, mocking stock: and when they had pulled off the skin of his head with the hair, they asked him if he would eat, before he were punished throughout the whole body in every limb.	7 Specialmente faceva questi discorsi la notte; e la grande fama del suo potere e virtute per tutto era divulgata.
8 But he answered in his own language, and said: I will not do it. Wherefore Ire also in the next place, received the torments of the first:	8 La qual cosa vedendo Filippo, e (che) a poco a poco l'uomo (cioè Giuda) far profitto, e con prestezza le sue cose andare prospere, scrisse a Tolomeo duca di Celesiria e Fenicia, che dèsse sussidio alle faccende del re.
9 And when he was at the last gasp, he said thus: Thou indeed, O most wicked man, destroyest us out of this present life: but the King of the world will raise us up, who die for his laws, in the resurrection of eternal life.	9 Il qual Tolomeo velocemente mandò Nicanore, figliuolo di Patroclo, il quale era de' principali ed era amico, dandoli gente mescolata a piedi e a cavallo, ben armati (e mal armati), non meno di venti milia, acciò che ispegnesse tutta la generazione giudea, aggiuntoli Gorgia cavaliere, uomo nelli fatti dell' arme e di battaglie molto esperto (e ammaestrato).
10 After him the third was made a mocking stock, and when he was required, he quickly put forth his tongue, and courageously stretched out his hands:	10 E Nicanore ordinò al re, che supplisse il tributo ai Romani, il quale era (solo) di duo migliaia di talenti, della presa de' Giudei.
11 And said with confidence: These	11 E sùbito mandò alle città marittime, convocando acciò che venissono a comprarsi de' Giudei per servi, promettendo egli di darli nonanta Giudei per uno talento, non avendo rispetto alla vendetta la qual lui dovea conseguitare dallo onnipotente Iddio.
12 So that the king, and they that were with him, wondered at the young man's courage, because he esteemed the torments as nothing.	12 E Giuda, dove si trovò, manifestò a quelli ch' erano con lui lo avvenimento di Nicanore.
13 And after he was thus dead, they tormented the fourth in the like manner	13 Dei quali alcuni dubitando, e non credendo alla giustizia di Dio, si fuggirono.
14 And when he was now ready to die, he spoke thus: It is better, being put to death by men, to look for hope from God, to be raised up again by him: for, as to thee thou shalt have no resurrection unto life.	14 E gli altri, che rimasero di quelli, sì venivano pregando Iddio insieme, che li liberasse dall'empio Nicanore, il qual gli avea venduti prima che li fosse venuto appresso.
15 And when they had brought the fifth, they tormented him. But he looking upon the king,	15 E se non per cagione di loro li volesse liberare, che Iddio lo facesse per amor del suo testamento lo qual fu dato alli padri loro, e per la invocazione del suo santo e magnifico nome sopra di loro.
16 Said: Whereas thou hast power among men, though thou art corruptible, thou dost what thou wilt: but think not that our nation is forsaken by God.	16 E (chiamati e) radunati ch' ebbe il Maccabeo insieme sette milia uomini i quali erano con lui, pregava che non si riconciliassero cogl' inimici, che nè anco temessero la (iniqua) moltitudine degli inimici, che venìa contro a loro, ma che combattesseno fortemente,
17 But stay patiently a while, and thou shalt see his great power, in what manner he will torment thee and thy seed.	17 avendo dinanzi alli occhi suoi la ingiuria la qual era stata fatta dalli nimici ingiustamente al luogo santo, e anco la ingiuria della città (che presono) posta in tanta derisione, e anco la distruzione delle leggi degli antichi (nostri).
18 After him they brought the sixth, and he being ready to die, spoke thus: Be not deceived without cause: for we suffer these things for ourselves, having sinned against our God, and things worthy of admiration are done to us:	18 Però che loro certamente si confidano nell'arme insieme con l'audacia loro; ma noi sì confidiamo nello onnipotente Iddio, il qual puote disfare e quelli che vengono contro a noi, e tutto il mondo, in uno cenno (e ad una sua deliberazione).
19 But do not think that thou s escape unpunished, for that thou attempted to fight against God.	19 E ridusseli a memoria delli adiutorii di Dio, li quali furono fatti alli suoi antecessori, e quello che fu fatto sotto Sennacherib, che cento e ottantacinque milia ne perirono;
20 Now the mother was to be ad above measure, and worthy to be remembered by good men, who beheld seven sons slain in the space of one day, and bore it with a good courage, for the hope that she had in God:	20 e della battaglia la qual ebbero con quelli di Galata in Babilonia, dove tutti, quando vennero al fatto, dubitando quelli di Macedonia loro compagni, essi soli sei milia uomini ne uccisero cento venti milia, per le adiutorio loro dato del cielo, e per questo hanno conseguitato molti beneficii.
21 And she bravely exhorted every o of them in her own language, being filled with wisdom: and joining a man's heart to a woman's thought,	21 Per queste parole rimasero tutti costanti, e preparati di morire per difensione delle leggi e della patria.
22 She said to them: I know not how you were formed in my womb: for I neither gave you breath, nor soul, nor life, neither did I frame the limbs of every one of you.	22 Fatto questo, ordinò li suoi fratelli principi a ciascun ordine, Simone, Iosefo e Ionata, dando a ciascuno per condutta mille e cinquecento uomini.
23 But the Creator of the world, that formed the nativity of man, and that found out the origin of all, he will restore to you again in his mercy, both breath and life, as now you despise yourselves for the sake of his laws.	23 Anco letto il libro santo da Esdra, e dato il segno dello adiutorio di Dio, nella prima schiera esso Giuda fu alle mani con Nicanore.
24 Now Antiochus, thinking himself despised, and withal despising the voice of the upbraider, when the youngest was yet alive, did not only exhort him by words, but also assured him with an oath, that he would make him a rich and a happy man, and, if he would turn from the laws of his fathers, would take him for a friend, and furnish him with things necessary.	24 E fatto lo adiutorio di Dio onnipotente, uccisero sopra nove milia uomini; e fatta debile la maggiore parte dello esèrcito di Nicanore per le ferite ch' ebbero, furono costretti di fuggire.
25 But when the young man was not moved with these things, the king called the mother, and counselled her to deal with the young man to save his life.	25 Pigliarono anco le pecunie di coloro che erano venuti per comperare li Giudei per ischiavi, e perseguitorono loro per ogni parte.
26 And when he had exhorted her with many words, she promised that she would counsel her son.	26 Ma loro fuggiti si tornarono colle bocche chiuse; e questo fatto fu dinanzi il sabbato; per la qual cagione non perseverorono di perseguitarli.
27 So bending herself towards him, mocking the cruel tyrant, she said her own language: My son, have pi upon me, that bore thee nine months my womb, and save thee suck years, and nourished thee, and b thee up unto this age.	27 Congregorono dopo questo tutte le loro arme e tutta la loro roba, e celebrorono il sabbato, benedicendo Iddio il quale li liberò in questo dì, dando a loro il principio della sua misericordia.
28 I beseech thee, my son, look upon heaven and earth, and all that is in them: and consider that God made the out of nothing, and mankind also:	28 Dopo il sabbato divisero parte delle robe prese agli infermi, orfani e vedove; e il resto divisero fra loro.
29 So thou shalt not fear this tormentor, but being made a worthy partner with thy brethren, receive death, that in that mercy I may receive thee again with thy brethren.	29 Terminate adunque queste cose (per questo modo), e insieme da tutti universalmente fatta la invocazione della misericordia, dimandorono al Signore, che nella fine si reconciliasse con li servi suoi.
30 While she was yet speaking these words, the young man said: For whom do you stay ? I will not obey the commandment of the king, but the commandment of the law, which was given us by Moses.	30 E anco di quelli i quali erano con Timoteo e Bacchide, che combatteano contra di loro, ne uccisero sopra venti milia; ed ebbero una grande munizione; e molta roba della preda divisero egualmente agli infermi, pupilli e vedove, e dando anco alli antichi.
31 But thou that hast been the author of all mischief against the Hebrews, shalt not escape the hand of God.	31 E dopo ch' ebbero con diligenza radunate tutte l'arme, le posero nelli luoghi dove era bisogno; lo residuo della preda portarono in Ierusalem.
32 For we suffer thus for our sine.	32 E Filarco uomo scelesto, che avea afflitto in molte cose i Giudei, il qual era con Timoteo, uccisero.
33 And though the Lord our God is angry with us a little while for our chastisement and correction: yet he will be reconciled again to his servants.	33 E conciosia cosa che si celebrasse il dì della vittoria in Ierusalem, colui che avea abbruciate le porte sacre, cioè Callistene, essendo lui fuggito in una casa piccola, lo abbruciorono, rendendogli la condegna mercede per le sue empietadi.
34 But thou, O wicked and of all men most flagitious, be not lifted up without cause with vain hopes, whilst thou art raging against his servants.	34 Ma Nicanore, uomo operator di molti mali, il quale avea condotto mille mercatanti per comperar i Giudei,
35 For thou hast not yet escaped the judgment of the almighty God, who beholdeth all things.	35 fu molto umiliato da coloro i quali lui esistimava per nulla, mediante lo adiutorio del Signore; e deposta la vestimenta della gloria sua, fuggendo per lo mezzo delle terre, solo se ne venne in Antiochia, avendo conseguitato una grande infelicità per la distruzione del suo esèrcito.
36 For my brethren, having now undergone a short pain, are under the covenant of eternal life: but thou by the judgment of God shalt receive just punishment for thy pride.	36 E lui il quale avea promesso di restituire il tributo alli Romani della presa di quelli di Ierusalem, ora predicava che li Giudei aveano Iddio per suo protettore; e per quello sono inespugnabili, (e non è persona nè esèrcito che li possi vincere), però che sèguitano le leggi (ordinate e) constituite da esso Iddio.
37 But I, like my brethren, offer up my life and my body for the laws of our fathers: calling upon God to be speedily merciful to our nation, and that thou by torments and stripes mayst confess that he alone is God.
38 But in me and in my brethren the wrath of the Almighty, which hath justly been brought upon all our nation, shall cease.
39 Then the king being incensed with anger, raged against him more cruelly than all the rest, taking it grievously that he was mocked.
40 So this man also died undefiled, wholly trusting in the Lord.
41 And last of all after the sons the mother also was consumed.
42 But now there is enough said of the sacrifices, and of the excessive cruelties.
