1 At the same time Antiochus prepared for a second journey into Egypt.	1 Verso questo tempo, mentre Antioco preparava la seconda spedizione contro l'Egitto,
2 And it came to pass that through the whole city of Jerusalem for the space of forty days there were seen horsemen running in the air, in gilded raiment, and armed with spears, like bands of soldiers.	2 accadde che per tutta la città, quasi per quaranta giorni, si videro correre per l'aria cavalieri dalle vesti dorate, armati di lance e disposti a coorte, spade sguainate,
3 And horses set in order by ranks, running one against another, with the shakings of shields, and a multitude of men in helmets, with drawn swords, and casting of darts, and glittering of golden armour, and of harnesses of all sorts.	3 squadroni schierati di cavalleria, assalti ed incursioni sferrati da una e dall'altra parte, movimenti di scudi, foreste di aste, lanci di dardi, bagliori di armature d'oro e corazze d'ogni genere.
4 Wherefore all men prayed that these prodigies might turn to good.	4 Tutti, perciò, pregavano perché l'apparizione fosse di buon augurio.
5 Now when there was gone forth a false rumour, as though Antiochus had been dead, Jason taking with him no fewer than a thousand men, suddenly assaulted the city: and though the citizens ran together to the wall, the city at length was taken, and Menelaus fled into the castle.	5 Sparsasi poi la falsa notizia che Antioco era passato all'altra vita, Giasone, presi con sé non meno di mille uomini, all'improvviso compì un attacco contro la città. Battuti gli uomini che erano sulle mura, la città era ormai già occupata, quando Menelao si rifugiò nell'acropoli.
6 But Jason slew his countrymen without mercy, not considering that prosperity against one's own kindred is a very great evil, thinking they had been enemies, and not citizens, whom he conquered.	6 Giasone allora incominciò a far strage senza pietà dei propri concittadini, non considerando che un successo contro la propria gente è un grandissimo insuccesso, ma credendo invece di riportare trionfi su nemici e non su connazionali.
7 Yet he did not gee the principality, but received confusion at tile end, for the reward of his treachery, and fled again into the country of the Ammonites.	7 Tuttavia egli non riuscì ad impadronirsi del potere; anzi, alla fine, raccolta la vergogna della sua cospirazione, fuggì di nuovo nell'Ammanìtide.
8 At the last having been shut up by Aretas the king of the Arabians, in order for his destruction, flying from city to city, hated by all men, as a forsaker of the laws, and execrable, as an enemy of his country and countrymen, he was thrust out into Egypt:	8 Gli toccò, dunque, una brutta fine. Accusato presso Areta, capo degli Arabi, fuggendo di città in città e perseguitato da tutti, detestato come traditore delle leggi ed esecrato come carnefice della patria e dei cittadini, fu spinto in Egitto.
9 And he that had driven many out of their country, perished in a strange land, going to Lacedemon, as if for kindred sake he should have refuge there:	9 Così, colui che aveva mandato esuli molti della sua patria, perì esule tra gli Spartani, presso i quali si era recato per trovarvi un riparo in nome della comune origine.
10 But he that had cast out many unburied, was himself cast forth both unlamented and unburied, neither having foreign burial, nor being partaker of the sepulchre of his fathers.	10 Lui, che aveva fatto gettar via tanta gente senza sepoltura, finì senza rimpianto; non ebbe un funerale qualsiasi né un posto nel sepolcro dei padri.
11 Now when these things were done, the king suspected that the Jews would forsake the alliance: whereupon departing out of Egypt with a furious mind, he took the city by force of arms.	11 Quando questi avvenimenti raggiunsero il re, egli pensò che la Giudea si fosse ribellata. Perciò, ritiratosi dall'Egitto, con animo inferocito occupò la città con le armi
12 And commanded the soldiers to kill, and not to spare any that came in their way, and to go up into the houses slay.	12 e ordinò ai soldati di abbattere senza pietà quanti incontravano e di trucidare quelli che si rifugiavano nelle case.
13 Thus there was a slaughter of young and old, a destruction of women children, and killing of virgins and infants.	13 Vi fu uno sterminio di giovani e vecchi, un massacro di uomini, donne e ragazzi, una strage di fanciulle e bambini.
14 And there were slain in the space o three whole days fourscore thousand, forty thousand were made prisoners, and as many sold.	14 In soli tre giorni perirono ottantamila persone: quarantamila nella mischia e non meno degli uccisi furono quelli venduti schiavi.
15 But this was not enough; he presumed also to enter into the temple, the most holy in all the world, Menelaus, that traitor to the laws, and to his country, being his guide.	15 Non contento di questo, osò entrare nel tempio più santo di tutta la terra, avendo come guida Menelao, fattosi traditore delle leggi e della patria.
16 And taking in his wicked hands the holy vessels, which were given by other kings and cities, for the ornament and the glory of the place, he unworthily handled and profaned them.	16 Con le sue mani impure prese i vasi sacri e con le sue mani sacrileghe spazzò via i doni degli altri re, depositativi ad incremento, gloria e onore di quel luogo.
17 Thus Antiochus going astray in mind, did not consider that God was angry for a while, because of the sins of the habitants of the city: and therefore contempt had happened to the place:	17 Antioco si esaltò nel suo pensiero, non considerando che il Signore si era irritato per breve tempo, a causa dei peccati degli abitanti della città. Da questo proveniva la sua noncuranza per il luogo.
18 Otherwise had they not been involved in many sins, as Heliodorus, who was sent by king Seleucus to rob treasury, so this man also, as soon as had come, had been forthwith scourged, and put back from his presumption.	18 Se, infatti, non fosse accaduto loro di cadere in molti peccati, come Eliodoro che era stato inviato dal re Selèuco per l'ispezione del tesoro, così anch'egli, appena arrivato, sarebbe stato subito flagellato e distolto dalla sua temerarietà.
19 But God did not choose the people for the place's sake, but the place for the people's sake.	19 Ma il Signore ha eletto non il popolo per il luogo, ma il luogo per il popolo.
20 And therefore the place also itself was made partaker of the evils of the people: but afterward shall communicate in the good things thereof, and as it was forsaken in the wrath of almighty God, shall be exalted again with great glory, when the great Lord shall be reconciled.	20 Per questo appunto il luogo stesso, dopo aver partecipato alle disgrazie accadute al popolo, ne condivise poi i benefici; abbandonato già per l'ira dell'Onnipotente, di nuovo, per la riconciliazione del grande Sovrano, è stato ricostituito in tutta la sua gloria.
21 So when Antiochus had taken away out of the temple a thousand and eight hundred talents, he went back in all haste to Antioch, thinking through pride, that he might now make the land navigable, and the sea passable on foot: such was the haughtiness of his mind.	21 Antioco, dunque, sottratti milleottocento talenti dal tempio, in fretta tornò ad Antiochia, credendo nella sua superbia, a causa dell'esaltazione del suo cuore, di aver reso la terra navigabile e il mare transitabile a piedi.
22 He left also governors to afflict the people: at Jerusalem, Philip, a Phrygian by birth, but in manners more barbarous than he that set him there:	22 Lasciò anche dei soprintendenti per maltrattare la gente: a Gerusalemme Filippo, frigio di origine ma di carattere più barbaro di colui che l'aveva investito della carica;
23 And in Gazarim, Andronicus and Menelaus, who bore a more heavy hand upon the citizens than the rest.	23 sul Garizim invece Andronico; oltre ad essi, Menelao, che più ignobilmente degli altri dominava sui cittadini. Pieno di odio contro i Giudei,
24 And whereas he was set against the Jews, he sent that hateful prince Apollonius with an army of two and twenty thousand men, commanding him to kill all that were of perfect age, and to sell the women and the younger sort.	24 il re inviò il misarca Apollonio con un esercito di ventiduemila uomini, con l'ordine di trucidare tutti gli adulti e di vendere le donne e i più giovani.
25 Who when he was come to Jerusalem, pretending peace, rested till the holy day of the sabbath: and then the Jews keeping holiday, he commanded his men to take arms.	25 Costui, giunto a Gerusalemme, simulò un contegno pacifico, attendendo fino al giorno del sabato. Poi, sorprendendo i Giudei nel riposo, ordinò ai suoi una parata militare;
26 And he slew all that were come forth to see: and running through the city with armed men, he destroyed a very great multitude.	26 fece trafiggere così tutti coloro che erano usciti per lo spettacolo e quindi, fatta irruzione con le armi nella città, ne uccise una grande moltitudine.
27 But Judas Machabeus, who was the tenth, had withdrawn himself into a desert place, and there lived amongst wild beasts in the mountains with his company: and they continued feeding on herbs, that they might not be partakers of the pollution.	27 Ma Giuda, detto anche Maccabeo, con una decina di uomini, si ritirò nel deserto, dove viveva al modo delle fiere, sui monti, insieme ai compagni. Nutrendosi di erbe, resistevano per non aver parte nella contaminazione.
