1 Now Simon heard that Tryphon was gathering together a very great army, to invade the land of Juda, and to destroy it.	1 Supo Simón que había juntado Trifón un ejército numeroso para ir a devastar el país de Judá.
2 And seeing that the people was in dread, and in fear, he went up to Jerusalem, and assembled the people:	2 Viendo al pueblo espantado y medroso, subió a Jerusalén, reunió al pueblo
3 And exhorted them, saying: You know what great battles I and my brethren, and the house of my father, have fought for the laws, and the sanctuary, and the distresses that we have seen:	3 y le exhortó diciendo: «Vosotros sabéis todo lo que hemos hecho mis hermanos, la casa de mi padre y yo por la Ley y el Lugar Santo, y las guerras y tribulaciones que hemos sufrido.
4 By reason whereof all my brethren have lost their lives for Israel's sake, and I am left alone.	4 Por esta causa, por Israel, han muerto mis hermanos todos y he quedado yo solo.
5 And now far be it from me to spare my life in any time of trouble: for I am not better than my brethren.	5 Lejos de mí ahora mirar por salvar mi vida en cualquier tiempo de angustia, que no soy yo mejor que mis hermanos;
6 I will avenge then my nation and the sanctuary, and our children, and wives: for all the heathens are gathered together to destroy us out of mere malice.	6 sino que vengaré a mi nación, al Lugar Santo y a vuestras mujeres e hijos, puesto que, impulsados por el odio, se han unido todos los gentiles para aniquilarnos».
7 And the spirit of the people was enkindled as soon as they heard these words.	7 Al oír estas palabras, se enardecieron los ánimos del pueblo
8 And they answered with a loud voice, saying: Thou art our leader in the place of Judas, and Jonathan thy brother.	8 y respondieron en alta voz diciendo: «Tú eres nuestro guía en lugar de Judas y de tu hermano Jonatán;
9 Fight thou our battles, and we will do whatsoever thou shalt say to us.	9 toma la dirección de nuestra guerra y haremos cuanto nos mandes».
10 So gathering together all the men of war, he made haste to finish all the walls of Jerusalem, and he fortified it round about.	10 Reunió entonces Simón a todos los hombres aptos para la guerra y se dio prisa en acabar las murallas de Jerusalén hasta que la fortificó en todo su contorno.
11 And he sent Jonathan the son of Absalom, and with him a new army into Joppe, and he cast out them that were in it, and himself remained there.	11 Envió a Jonatán, hijo de Absalón, a Joppe con un importante destacamento, el cual expulsó a los que en la ciudad estaban y se estableció en ella.
12 And Tryphon removed from Ptolemais with a great army, to invade the land of Juda, and Jonathan was with him in custody.	12 Partió Trifón de Tolemaida con un ejercito numeroso para entrar en el país de Judá llevando consigo prisionero a Jonatán.
13 But Simon pitched in Addus, over against the plain.	13 Simón puso su campamento en Jadidá, frente a la llanura.
14 And when Tryphon understood that Simon was risen up in the place of his brother Jonathan, and that he meant to join battle with him, he sent messengers to him,	14 Al enterarse Trifón de que Simón había sucedido en el mando a su hermano Jonatán y que estaba preparado para entrar con él en batalla, le envió mensajeros diciéndole:
15 Saying: We have detained thy brother Jonathan for the money that he owed in the king's account, by reason of the affairs which he had the management of.	15 «Tenemos detenido a tu hermano Jonatán por las deudas contraídas con el tesoro real en el desempeño de su cargo.
16 But now send a hundred talents of silver, and his two sons for hostages, that when he is set at liberty he may not revolt from us, and we will release him.	16 Envíanos, pues, cien talentos de plata y a dos de sus hijos como rehenes, no sea que una vez libre se rebele contra nosotros. Entonces le soltaremos».
17 Now Simon knew that he spoke deceitfully to him, nevertheless he ordered the money, and the children to be sent: lest he should bring upon himself a great hatred of the people of Israel, who might have said:	17 Simón, aunque se dio cuenta de que le hablaban con falsedad, envió a buscar el dinero y los niños para no provocar contra sí una gran enemistad del pueblo que diría:
18 Because he sent not the money, and the children, therefore is he lost.	18 «Porque no envié yo el dinero y los niños, ha muerto Jonatán».
19 So he sent the children, and the hundred talents: and he lied, and did not let Jonathan go.	19 Envió, pues, los niños y los cien talentos, pero Trifón faltó a su palabra y no soltó a Jonatán.
20 And after this Tryphon entered within the country, to destroy it: and they went about by the way that leadeth to Ador: and Simon and his army marched to every place whithersoever they went.	20 Después de esto, se puso Trifón en marcha para invadir la región y devastarla. Dio un rodeo por el camino de Adorá, mientras Simón y su ejército obstaculizaban su marcha dondequiera que iba.
21 And they that were in the castle, sent messengers to Tryphon, that he should make haste to come through the desert, and sent them victuals.	21 Los de la Ciudadela enviaron a Trifón legados dándole prisa a que viniese donde ellos a través del desierto y les enviase víveres.
22 And Tryphon made ready all his horsemen to come that night: but there fell a very great snow, and he came not into the country of Galaad.	22 Preparó Trifón toda su caballería para ir, pero aquella noche cayó tal cantidad de nieve que le impidió acudir allá. Partió de allí y se fue a la región de Galaad.
23 And when he approached to Bascama, he slew Jonathan and his sons there.	23 Cuando se encontraba cerca de Bascamá, hizo matar a Jonatán, que fue enterrado allí.
24 And Tryphon returned, and went into his own country.	24 Luego dio Trifón la vuelta y se marchó a su país.
25 And Simon sent, and took the bones of Jonathan his brother, and buried them in Modin, in the city of his fathers.	25 Envió Simón a recoger los huesos de su hermano Jonatán y le dio sepultura en Modín, ciudad de sus padres.
26 And all Israel bewailed him with great lamentation: and they mourned for him many days.	26 Todo Israel hizo gran duelo por él y le lloró muchos días.
27 And Simon built over the sepulchre of his father and of his brethren, a building lofty to the sight, of polished stone behind and before:	27 Simón construyó sobre el sepulcro de su padre y sus hermanos un mausoleo alto, que pudiera verse, de piedras pulidas por delante y por detrás.
28 And he set up seven pyramids one against another for his father and his mother, and his four brethren:	28 Levantó siete pirámides, una frente a otra, dedicadas a su padre, a su madre y a sus cuatro hermanos.
29 And round about these he set great pillars: and upon the pillars arms for a perpetual memory: and by the arms ships carved, which might be seen by all that sailed on the sea.	29 Levantó alrededor de ellas grandes columnas y sobre las columnas hizo panoplias para recuerdo eterno. Al lado de las panoplias esculpió unas naves que pudieran ser contempladas por todos los que navegaran por el mar.
30 This is the sepulchre that he made in Modin even unto this day.	30 Tal fue el mausoleo que construyó en Modín y que subsiste en nuestros días.
31 But Tryphon when he was upon a journey with the young king Antiochus, treacherously slew him.	31 Trifón, procediendo insidiosamente con el joven rey Antíoco, le dio muerte.
32 And he reigned in his place, and put on the crown of Asia: and brought great evils upon the land.	32 Ocupó el reino en su lugar, se ciñó la diadema de Asia y causó grandes estragos en el país.
33 And Simon built up the strong holds of Judea, fortifying them with high towers, and great walls, and gates, and bars: and he stored up victuals in the fortresses.	33 Simón, por su parte, reconstruyó las fortalezas de Judea, las rodeó de altas torres y grandes murallas con puertas y cerrojos, y almacenó víveres en ellas.
34 And Simon chose men and sent to king Demetrius, to the end that he should grant an immunity to the land: for all that Tryphon did was to spoil.	34 Además escogió Simón hombres que envió al rey Demetrio intentando conseguir una remisión para la región, dado que toda la actividad de Trifón había sido un continuo robo.
35 And king Demetrius in answer to this request, wrote a letter in this manner:	35 El rey Demetrio contestó a su petición y le escribió la siguiente carta:
36 King Demetrius to Simon the high priest, and friend of kings, and to the ancients, and to the nation of the Jews, greeting.	36 «El rey Demetrio saluda a Simón, sumo sacerdote y amigo de reyes, a los ancianos y a la nación de los judíos.
37 The golden crown, and the palm, which you sent, we have received: and we are ready to make a firm peace with you, and to write to the king's chief officers to release you the things that we have released.	37 Hemos recibido la corona de oro y la palma que nos habéis enviado y estamos dispuestos a concertar con vosotros una paz completa y a escribir a los funcionarios que os concedan la remisión de las deudas.
38 For all that we have decreed in your favour, shall stand in force. The strong holds that you have built, shall be your own.	38 Cuanto hemos decidido sobre vosotros, quede firme y sean vuestras las fortalezas que habéis construido.
39 And as for any oversight or fault committed unto this day, we forgive it, and the crown which you owed: and if any other thing were taxed in Jerusalem, now let it not be taxed.	39 Os perdonamos los errores y delitos cometidos hasta el día de hoy y la corona que nos debéis. Si algún otro tributo se percibía en Jerusalén, ya no se exija.
40 And if any of you be fit to be enrolled among ours, let them be enrolled, and let there be peace between us.	40 Y si algunos de vosotros son aptos para alistarse en nuestra guardia, alístense y haya paz entre nosotros».
41 In the year one hundred and seventy the yoke of the Gentiles was taken off from Israel.	41 El año 170 quedó Israel libre del yugo de los gentiles
42 And the people of Israel began to write in the instruments, and public records, The first year under Simon the high priest, the great captain and prince of the Jews.	42 y el pueblo comenzó a escribir en las actas y contratos: «En el año primero de Simón, gran sumo sacerdote, estratega y hegumeno de los judíos.
43 In those days Simon besieged Gaza, and camped round about it, and he made engines, and set them to the city, and he struck one tower, and took it.	43 Por aquellos días puso cerco Simón a Gázara y la rodeó con sus tropas. Construyó una torre móvil que acercó a la ciudad y abriendo brecha en un baluarte, lo tomó.
44 And they that were within the engine leaped into the city: and there was a great uproar in the city.	44 Saltaron los de la torre a la ciudad y se produjo en ella gran agitación.
45 And they that were in the city went up with their wives and children upon the wall, with their garments rent, and they cried with a loud voice, beseeching Simon to grant them peace.	45 Los habitantes, rasgados los vestidos, subieron a la muralla con sus mujeres e hijos y pidieron a grandes gritos a Simón que les diese la mano.
46 And they said: Deal not with us according to our evil deeds, but according to thy mercy.	46 «No nos trates, le decían, según nuestras maldades, sino según tu misericordia».
47 And Simon being moved, did not destroy them: but yet he cast them out of the city, and cleansed the houses wherein there had been idols, and then he entered into it with hymns, blessing the Lord.	47 Simón se reconcilió con ellos y no les atacó, pero les echó de la ciudad y mandó purificar las casas en que había ídolos. Entonces entró en ella con himnos y bendiciones.
48 And having cast out of it all uncleanness, he placed in it men that should observe the law: and he fortified it, and made it his habitation.	48 Echó de ella toda impureza, estableció en ella hombres observantes de la Ley, la fortificó y se construyó en ella para sí una residencia.
49 But they that were in the castle of Jerusalem were hindered from going out and coming into the country, and from buying and selling: and they were straitened with hunger, and many of them perished through famine.	49 Los de la Ciudadela de Jerusalén se veían imposibilitados de entrar y salir por la región, de comprar y de vender. Sufrían grave escasez y bastantes de ellos habían perecido de hambre.
50 And they cried to Simon form peace, and he granted it to them: and he cast them out from thence, and cleansed the castle from uncleannesses.	50 Clamaron a Simón que hiciera con ellos la paz y Simón se lo concedió. Les echó de allí y purificó de inmundicias la Ciudadela.
51 And they entered into it the three and twentieth day of the second month, in the year one hundred and seventy-one, with thanksgiving, and branches of palm trees, and harps, and cymbals, and psalteries, and hymns, and canticles, because the great enemy was destroyed out of Israel.	51 Entraron en ella el día veintitrés del segundo mes del año 171 con aclamaciones y ramos de palma, con liras, címbalos y arpas, con himnos y cantos, porque un gran enemigo había sido vencido y expulsado de Israel.
52 And he ordained that these days should be kept every year with gladness.	52 Simón dispuso que este día se celebrara con júbilo cada año. Fortificó el monte del Templo que está al lado de la Ciudadela y habitó allí con los suyos.
53 And he fortified the mountain of the temple that was near the castle, and he dwelt there himself, and they that were with him.	53 Y viendo Simón que su hijo Juan era todo un hombre, le nombró jefe de todas las fuerzas con residencia en Gázara.
54 And Simon saw that John his son was a valiant man for war: and he made him captain of all the forces: and he dwelt in Gazara.
