Now it came to pass, after that Alexander the son of Philip the Macedonian, who first reigned in Greece, coming out of the land of Cethim, had overthrown Darius king of the Persians and Medes:1 Alejandro de Macedonia, hijo de Filipo, partió del país de Kittim, derrotó a Darío, rey de los persas y los medos, y reinó en su lugar, empezando por la Hélada.
He fought many battles, and took the strong holds of all, and slew the kings of the earth:2 Suscitó muchas guerras, se apoderó de plazas fuertes y dio muerte a reyes de la tierra.
And he went through even to the ends of the earth, and took the spoils of many nations: and the earth was quiet before him.3 Avanzó hasta los confines del mundo y se hizo con el botín de multitud de pueblos. La tierra enmudeció en su presencia y su corazón se ensoberbeció y se llenó de orgullo.
And he gathered a power, and a very strong army: and his heart was exalted and lifted up.4 Juntó un ejército potentísimo y ejerció el mando sobre tierras, pueblos y príncipes, que le pagaban tributo.
And he subdued countries of nations, and princes: and they became tributaries to him.5 Después, cayó enfermo y cononció que se moría.
And after these things, he fell down upon his bed, and knew that he should die.6 Hizo llamar entonces a sus servidores, a los nobles que con él se habían criado desde su juventud, y antes de morir, repartió entre ellos su reino.
And he called his servants the nobles that were brought up with him from his youth: and he divided his kingdom among them, while he was yet alive.7 Reinó Alejandro doce años y murió.
And Alexander reigned twelve years, and he died.8 Sus servidores entraron en posesión del poder, cada uno en su región.
And his servants made themselves kings every one in his place:9 Todos a su muerte se ciñeron la diadema y sus hijos después de ellos durante largos años; y multiplicaron los males sobre la tierra.
And they all put crowns upon themselves after his death, and their sons after them many years, and evils were multiplied in the earth.10 De ellos surgió un renuevo pecador, Antíoco Epífanes, hijo del rey Antíoco, que había estado como rehén en Roma. Subió al trono el año 137 del imperio de los griegos.
And there came out of them a wicked root, Antiochus the Illustrious, the son of king Antiochus, who had been a hostage at Rome: and he reigned in the hundred and thirty-seventh year of the kingdom of the Greeks.11 En aquellos días surgieron de Israel unos hijos rebeldes que sedujeron a muchos diciendo: «Vamos, concertemos alianza con los pueblos que nos rodean, porque desde que nos separamos de ellos, nos han sobrevenido muchos males».
In those days there went out of Israel wicked men, and they persuaded many, saying: Let us go, and make a covenant with the heathens that are round about us: for since we departed from them, many evils have befallen us.12 Estas palabras parecieron bien a sus ojos,
And the word seemed good in their eyes.13 y algunos del pueblo se apresuraron a acudir donde el rey y obtuvieron de él autorización para seguir las costumbres de los gentiles.
And some of the people determined to do this, and went to the king: and he gave them license to do after the ordinances of the heathens.14 En consecuencia, levantaron en Jerusalén un gimnasio al uso de los paganos,
And they built a place of exercise in Jerusalem, according to the laws of the nations:15 rehicieron sus prepucios, renegaron de la alianza santa para atarse al yugo de los gentiles, y se vendieron para obrar el mal.
And they made themselves prepuces, and departed from the holy covenant, and joined themselves to the heathens, and were sold to do evil.16 Antíoco, una vez asentado en el reino, concibió el proyecto de reinar sobre el país de Egipto para ser rey de ambos reinos.
And the kingdom was established before Antiochus, and he had a mind to reign over the land of Egypt, that he might reign over two kingdoms.17 Con un fuerte ejército, con carros, elefantes, (jinetes) y numerosa flota, entró en Egipto
And he entered into Egypt with a great multitude, with chariots and elephants, and horsemen, and a great number of ships:18 y trabó batalla con el rey de Egipto, Tolomeo. Tolomeo rehuyó su presencia y huyó; muchos cayeron heridos.
And he made war against Ptolemee king of Egypt, but Ptolemee was afraid at his presence, and fled, and many were wounded unto death.19 Ocuparon las ciudades fuertes de Egipto y Antíoco se alzó con los despojos del país.
And he took the strong cities in the land of Egypt: and he took the spoils of the land of Egypt.20 El año 143, después de vencer a Egipto, emprendió el camino de regreso.
And he proudly entered into the sanctuary, and took away the golden altar, and the candlestick of light, and all the vessels thereof, and the table of proposition, and the pouring vessels, and the vials, and the little mortars of gold, and the veil, and the crowns, and the golden ornament that was before the temple: and he broke them all in pieces.23 Se apropió también de la plata, oro, objetos de valor y de cuantos tesoros ocultos pudo encontrar.
And he took the silver and gold, and the precious vessels: and he took the hidden treasures which he found: and when he had taken all away he departed into his own country.24 Tomándolo todo, partió para su tierra después de derramar mucha sangre y de hablar con gran insolencia.
And he made a great slaughter of men, and spoke very proudly.25 En todo el país hubo gran duelo por Israel.
And there was great mourning in Israel, and in every place where they were.26 Jefes y ancianos gimieron, languidecieron doncellas y jóvenes, la belleza de las mujeres se marchitó.
And the princes, and the ancients mourned, and the virgins and the young men were made feeble, and the beauty of the women was changed.27 El recién casado entonó un canto de dolor, sentada en el lecho nupcial, la esposa lloraba.
Every bridegroom took up lamentation: and the bride that set in the marriage bed, mourned:28 Se estremeció la tierra por sus habitantes, y toda la casa de Jacob se cubrió de vergüenza.
And the land was moved for the inhabitants thereof, and all the house of Jacob was covered with confusion.29 Dos años después, envió el rey a las ciudades de Judá al Misarca, que se presentó en Jerusalén con un fuerte ejército.
And after two full years the king sent the chief collector of his tributes to the cities of Juda, and he came to Jerusalem with a great multitude.30 Habló dolosamente palabras de paz y cuando se hubo ganado la confianza, cayó de repente sobre la ciudad y le asestó un duro golpe matando a muchos del pueblo de Israel.
And he spoke to them peaceable words in deceit: and they believed him.31 Saqueó la ciudad, la incendió y arrasó sus casas y la muralla que la rodeaba.
And he fell upon the city suddenly, and struck it with a great slaughter, and destroyed much people in Israel.32 Sus hombres hicieron cautivos a mujeres y niños y se adueñaron del ganado.
And he took the spoils of the city, and burnt it with fire, and threw down the houses thereof, and the walls thereof round about:33 Después reconstruyeron la Ciudad de David con una muralla grande y fuerte, con torres poderosas, y la hicieron su Ciudadela.
And they took the women captive, and the children, and the cattle they possessed.34 Establecieron allí una raza pecadora de rebeldes, que en ella se hicieron fuertes.
And they built the city of David with a great and strong wall, and with strong towers, and made it a fortress for them:35 La proveyeron de armas y vituallas y depositaron en ella el botín que habían reunido del saqueo de Jerusalén. Fue un peligroso lazo.
And they placed there a sinful nation, wicked men, and they fortified themselves therein: and they stored up armour, and victuals, and gathered together the spoils of Jerusalem;36 Se convirtió en asechanza contra el santuario, en adversario maléfico para Israel en todo tiempo.
And laid them up there: and they became a great snare.37 Derramaron sangre inocente en torno al santuario y lo profanaron.
And this was a place to lie in wait against the sanctuary, and an evil devil in Israel.38 Por ellos los habitantes de Jerusalén huyeron; vino a ser ella habitación de extraños, extraña para los que en ella nacieron, pues sus hijos la abandonaron.
And they shed innocent blood round about the sanctuary, and defiled the holy place.39 Quedó su santuario desolado como un desierto, sus fiestas convertidas en duelo, sus sábados en irrisión, su honor en desprecio.
And the inhabitants of Jerusalem fled away by reason of them, and the city was made the habitation to strangers, and she became a stranger to her own seed, and her children forsook her.40 A medida de su gloria creció su deshonor, su grandeza se volvió aflicción.
Her sanctuary was desolate like a wilderness, her festival days were turned into mourning, her sabbaths into reproach, her honours were brought to nothing.41 El rey publicó un edicto en todo su reino ordenando que todos formaran un único pueblo
Her dishonour was increased according to her glory, and her excellency was turned into mourning.42 y abandonara cada uno sus peculiares costumbres. Los gentiles acataron todos el edicto real
And king Antiochus wrote to all his kingdom, that all the people should be one: and every one should leave his own law.43 y muchos israelitas aceptaron su culto, sacrificaron a los ídolos y profanaron el sábado.
And all nations consented according to the word of king Antiochus.44 También a Jerusalén y a la ciudades de Judá hizo el rey llegar, por medio de mensajeros, el edicto que ordenaba seguir costumbres extrañas al país.
And many of Israel consented to his service, and they sacrificed to idols, and profaned the sabbath.45 Debían suprimir en el santuario holocaustos, sacrificios y libaciones; profanar sábados y fiestas;
And the king sent letters by the hands of messengers to Jerusalem, and to all the cities of Juda: that they should follow the law of the nations of the earth,46 mancillar el santuario y lo santo;
And should forbid holocausts and sacrifices, and atonements to be made in the temple of God.47 levantar altares, recintos sagrados y templos idolátricos; sacrificar puercos y animales impuros;
And should prohibit the sabbath, and the festival days, to be celebrated.48 dejar a sus hijos incircuncisos; volver abominables sus almas con toda clase de impurezas y profanaciones,
And he commanded the holy places to be profaned, and the holy people of Israel.49 de modo que olvidasen la Ley y cambiasen todas sus costumbres.
And he commanded altars to be built, and temples, and idols, and swine's flesh to be immolated, and unclean beasts.50 El que no obrara conforme a la orden del rey, moriría.
And that they should leave their children uncircumcised, and let their souls be defiled with all uncleannesses, and abominations, to the end that they should forget the law, and should change all the justifications of God.51 En el mismo tono escribió a todo su reino, nombró inspectores para todo el pueblo, y ordenó a las ciudades de Judá que en cada una de ellas se ofrecieran sacrificios.
And that whosoever would not do according to the word of king Antiochus should be put to death.52 Muchos del pueblo, todos los que abandonaban la Ley, se unieron a ellos. Causaron males al país
According to all these words he wrote to his whole kingdom, and he appointed rulers over the people that should force them to do these things.53 y obligaron a Israel a ocultarse en toda suerte de refugios.
And they commanded the cities of Juda to sacrifice.54 El día quince del mes de Kisléu del año 145 levantó el rey sobre el altar de los holocaustos la Abominación de la desolación. También construyeron altares en las ciudades de alrededor de Judá.
Then many of the people were gathered to them that had forsaken the law of the Lord: and they committed evils in the land:55 A las puertas de las casas y en las plazas quemaban incienso.
And they drove away the people of Israel into lurking holes, and into the secret places of fugitives.56 Rompían y echaban al fuego los libros de la Ley que podían hallar.
On the fifteenth day of the month Casleu, in the hundred and forty-fifth year, king Antiochus set up the abominable idol of desolation upon the altar of God, and they built altars throughout all the cities of Juda round about:57 Al que encontraban con un ejemplar de la Alianza en su poder, o bien descubrían que observaba los preceptos de la Ley, la decisión del rey le condenaba a muerte.
And they burnt incense, and sacrificed at the doors of the houses, and in the streets.58 Actuaban violentamente contra los israelitas que sorprendían un mes y otro en las ciudades;
And they cut in pieces, and burnt with fire the books of the law of God:59 el día veinticinco de cada mes ofrecían sacrificios en el ara que se alzaba sobre el altar de los holocaustos.
And every one with whom the books of the testament of the Lord were found, and whosoever observed the law of the Lord, they put to death, according to the edict of the king.60 A las mujeres que hacían circuncidar a sus hijos las llevaban a la muerte, conforme al edicto,
Thus by their power did they deal with the people of Israel, that were found in the cities month after month.61 con sus criaturas colgadas al cuello. La misma suerte corrían sus familiares y los que habían efectuado la circuncisión.
And on the five and twentieth day of the month they sacrificed upon the altar of the idol that was over against the altar of God.62 Muchos en Israel se mantuvieron firmes y se resistieron a comer cosa impura.
Now the women that circumcised their children, were slain according to the commandment of king Antiochus.63 Prefirieron morir antes que contaminarse con aquella comida y profanar la alianza santa; y murieron.
And they hanged the children about their necks in all their houses: and those that had circumcised them, they put to death.64 Inmensa fue la Cólera que descargó sobre Israel.
And many of the people of Israel determined with themselves, that they would not eat unclean things: and they chose rather to die than to be defiled with unclean meats.
And they would not break the holy law of God, and they were put to death:
And there was very great wrath upon the people.
