DOUAI-RHEIMSDIODATI
After this, when the wrath of king Assuerus was appeased, he remembered Vasthi, and what she had done end what she had suffered:1 DOPO queste cose, quando l’ira del re Assuero fu racquetata, egli si ricordò di Vasti, e di quello che ella avea fatto, e del decreto ch’era stato fatto contro a lei.
And the king's servants and his officers said: Let young women be sought for the king, virgins and beautiful,2 Laonde i servitori del re che gli ministravano, dissero: Cerchinsi al re delle fanciulle vergini le più belle.
And let some persons be sent through all the provinces to look for beautiful maidens and virgins: and let them bring them to the city of Susan, and put them into the house of the women under the hand of Egeus the eunuch, who is the overseer and keeper of the king's women: and let them receive women's ornaments, and other things necessary for their use.3 Ed ordini il re de’ commessari per tutte le provincie del suo reame, i quali adunino tutte le fanciulle vergini, le più belle, in Susan, stanza reale, nell’ostello delle femmine, sotto la cura di Hegai, eunuco del re, guardiano delle femmine; e sieno lor date le cose richieste ad abbellirsi.
And whosoever among them all shall please the king's eyes, let her be queen instead of Vasthi. The word pleased the king: and he commanded it should be done as they had suggested.4 E sia la giovane che piacerà al re, fatta regina, in luogo di Vasti. E la cosa piacque al re, ed egli fece così.
There was a man in the city of Susan, a Jew, named Mardochai, the son of Jair, the son of Semei, the son of Cis, of the race of Jemini,5 Or vi era in Susan, stanza reale, un uomo Giudeo, il cui nome era Mardocheo, figliuolo di Iair, figliuolo di Simi, figliuolo di Chis, Beniaminita;
Who had been carried away from Jerusalem at the time that Nabuchodonosor king of Babylon carried away Jechonias king of Juda,6 il quale era stato menato in cattività da Gerusalemme fra i prigioni, che furono menati in cattività con Ieconia, re di Giuda, il quale Nebucadnesar, re di Babilonia, avea menato in cattività.
And he had brought up his brother's daughter Edissa, who by another name was called Esther: now she had lost both her parents: and was exceeding fair and beautiful. And her father and mother being dead, Mardochai adopted her for his daughter.7 Ed egli allevava Hadassa, la quale è Ester, figliuola del suo zio; perciocchè ella non avea nè padre nè madre; e la fanciulla era formosa, e bella di aspetto; e dopo la morte di suo padre e di sua madre, Mardocheo se l’avea presa per figliuola.
And when the king's ordinance was noised abroad, and according to his commandment many beautiful virgins were brought to Susan, and were delivered to Egeus the eunuch: Esther also among the rest of the maidens was delivered to him to be kept in the number of the women.8 E, quando la parola del re, e il suo decreto fu inteso, molte fanciulle essendo raunate in Susan, stanza reale, sotto la cura di Hegai, Ester fu anch’essa assunta nella casa del re, sotto la cura di Hegai, guardiano delle femmine.
And she pleased him, and found favour in his sight. And he commanded the eunuch to hasten the women's ornaments, and to deliver to her her part, and seven of the most beautiful maidens of the king's house, and to adorn and deck out both her and her waiting maids.9 E la fanciulla piacque ad Hegai, ed acquistò la sua grazia; laonde egli prestamente le diede le cose che si richiedevano per abbellirsi, e i suoi alimenti; le diede ancora le sette più ragguardevoli donzelle della casa del re; poi la tramutò, insieme con le sue donzelle, nella più bella parte dell’ostello delle femmine.
And she would not tell him her people nor her country. For Mardochai had charged her to say nothing at all of that:10 Ora Ester non dichiarò il suo popolo, nè il suo parentado; perciocchè Mardocheo le avea divietato di dichiararlo.
And he walked every day before the court of the house, in which the chosen virgins werre kept, having a care for Esther's welfare, and desiring to know what would befall her.11 E Mardocheo passeggiava ogni dì davanti al cortile dell’ostello delle femmine, per sapere se Ester stava bene, e ciò che si farebbe di lei.
Now when every virgin's turn came to go in to the king, after all had been done for setting them off to advantage, it was the twelfth month: so that for six months they were anointed with oil of myrrh, and for other six months they used certain perfumes and sweet spices.12 Ora, quando veniva la volta a ciascuna fanciulla di entrare dal re Assuero, al termine che si era fatto inverso essa, ciò ch’era ordinato intorno alla femmine, cioè, di dodici mesi conciossiachè così si compiesse il tempo de’ loro abbellimenti: sei mesi con olio di mirra, e sei mesi con odori, e con altre cose da abbellir femmine;
And when they were going in to the king, whatsoever they asked to adorn themselves they received: and being decked out, as it pleased them, they passed from the chamber of the women to the king's chamber.13 allora la fanciulla, entrando in questo stato dal re, tutto ciò che diceva le era dato, per portarlo addosso, dall’ostello delle femmine fino alla casa del re.
And she that went in at evening, came out in the morning, and from thence she was conducted to the second house, that was under the hand of Susagaz the eunuch, who had the charge over the king's concubines: neither could she return any more to the king, unless the king desired it, and had ordered her by name to come.14 Ella entrava la sera, e la mattina ritornava nel secondo ostello delle femmine, sotto la cura di Saasgaz, eunuco del re, guardiano delle concubine; ella non entrava più dal re, se non che il re la volesse, e che fosse chiamata per nome.
And as the time came orderly about, the day was at hand, when Esther, the daughter of Abihail the brother of Mardochai, whom he had adopted for his daughter, was to go in to the king. But she sought not women's ornaments, but whatsoever Egeus the eunuch the keeper of the virgins had a mind, he gave her to adorn her.
So she was brought to the chamber of king Assuerus the tenth month, which is called Tebeth, in the seventh year of his reign.16 Ester adunque fu menata al re Assuero, nel palazzo reale di esso, al decimo mese, che è il mese di Tebet, l’anno settimo del regno di esso.
And the king loved her more than all the women, and she had favour and kindness before him above all the women, and he set the royal crown on her head, and made her queen instead of Vasthi.17 E il re amò Ester sopra tutte le altre femmine; ed ella acquistò la sua grazia e benevolenza, più che tutte le altre vergini; laonde egli le pose la corona reale in sul capo, e la costituì regina in luogo di Vasti.
And he commanded a magnificent feast to be prepared for all the princes, and for his servants, for the marriage and wedding of Esther. And he gave rest to all the provinces, and bestowed gifts according to princely magnificence.18 E il re fece un gran convito a tutti i suoi baroni e servitori, cioè, il convito delle nozze di Ester; e sgravò le provincie, e fece presenti secondo il poter reale.
And when the virgins were sought the second time, and gathered together, Mardochai stayed at the king's gate,19 Ora, mentre le vergini si adunavano la seconda volta, Mardocheo sedeva alla porta del re.
Neither had Esther as yet declared her country and people, according to his commandment. For whatsoever he commanded, Esther observed: and she did all things in the same manner as she was wont at that time when he brought her up a little one.20 Ester non dichiarò il suo parentado, nè il suo popolo, secondo che Mardocheo le avea divietato; ed ella faceva ciò che Mardocheo diceva, come quando era allevata appresso di lui
At that time, therefore, when Mardochai abode at the king's gate, Bagathan and Thares, two of the king's eunuchs, who were porters, and presided in the first entry of the palace, were angry: and they designed to rise up against the king, and to kill him.21 IN que’ dì, sedendo Mardocheo alla porta del re, due eunuchi del re, d’infra i guardiani della soglia, Bigtan e Teres, per alcuno sdegno, cercavano di metter la mano addosso al re Assuero.
And Mardochai had notice of it, and immediately he told it to queen Esther: and she to the king in Mardochai's name, who had reported the thing unto her.22 Il che essendo venuto a notizia a Mardocheo, egli lo fece assapere alla regina Ester; ed Ester lo disse al re da parte di Mardocheo.
It was inquired into, and found out: and they were both hanged on a gibbet. And it was put in the histories, and recorded in the chronicles before the king.23 Ed essendo fatta inquisizione del fatto, fu trovato che così era; laonde amendue furono appiccati ad un legno; e ciò fu scritto nel libro delle Croniche, in presenza del re
