1 Now it came to pass, when Judith a widow had heard these words, who was the daughter of Merari, the son of Idox, the son of Joseph, the son of Ozias, the son of Elai, the son of Jamnor, the son of Gedeon, the son of Raphaim, the son of Achitob, the son of Melehias, the son of Enan, the son of Nathanias, the son of Salathiel, the son of Simeon, the son of Ruben:	1 Se enteró entonces de ello Judit, hija de Merarí, hijo de Ox, hijo de José, hijo de Oziel, hijo de Elcías, hijo de Ananías, hijo de Gedeón, hijo de Rafaín, hijo de Ajitob, hijo de Elías, hijo de Jilquías, hijo de Eliab, hijo de Natanael, hijo de Salamiel, hijo de Sarasaday, hijo de Israel.
2 And her husband was Manasses, who died in the time of the barley harvest:	2 Su marido Manasés, de la misma tribu y familia que ella, había muerto en la época de la recolección de la cebada.
3 For he was standing over them that bound sheaves in the field ; and the heat came upon his head, and he died in Bethulia his own city, and was buried there with his fathers.	3 Estaba, en efecto, en el campo, vigilando a los que ataban las gavillas, y le dio una insolación a la cabeza, cayó en cama y vino a morir en su ciudad de Betulia. Fue sepultado junto a sus padres, en el campo que hay entre Dotán y Balamón.
4 And Judith his relict was a widow now three years and six months.	4 Judit llevaba ya tres años y cuatro meses viuda, viviendo en su casa.
5 And she made herself a private chamber in the upper part of her house, in which she abode shut up with her maids.	5 Se había hecho construir un aposento sobre el terrado de la casa, se había ceñido de sayal y se vestía vestidos de viuda; ayunaba
6 And she wore haircloth upon her loins, and fasted all the days of her life, except the sabbaths, and new moons, and the feasts of the house of Israel.	6 durante toda su viudez, a excepción de los sábados y las vigilias de los sábados, los novilunios y sus vigilias, las solemnidades y los días de regocijo de la casa de Israel.
7 And she was exceedingly beautiful, and her husband left her great riches, and very many servants, and large possessions of herds of oxen, and flocks of sheep.	7 Era muy bella y muy bien parecida. Su marido Manasés le había dejado oro y plata, siervos y siervas, ganados y campos, quedando ella como dueña,
8 And she was greatly renowned among all, because she feared the Lord very much, neither was there any one that spoke an ill word of her.	8 y no había nadie que pudiera decir de ella una palabra maliciosa, porque tenía un gran temor de Dios.
9 When therefore she had heard that Ozias had promised that he would deliver up the city after the fifth day, she sent to the ancients Chabri and Charmi.	9 Oyó, pues, Judit las amargas palabras que el pueblo había dicho contra el jefe de la ciudad, pues habían perdido el ánimo ante la escasez de agua. Supo también todo cuanto Ozías les había respondido y cómo les había jurado que entregaría la ciudad a los asirios al cabo de cinco días.
10 And they came to her, and she said to them: What is this word, by which Ozias hath consented to give up the city to the Assyrians, if within five days there come no aid to us?	10 Entonces, mandó llamar a Jabrís y Jarmís, ancianos de la ciudad, por medio de la sierva que tenía al frente de su hacienda.
11 And who are you that tempt the Lord?	11 Vinieron y ella les dijo: «Escuchadme, jefes de los moradores de Betulia. No están bien las palabras que habéis pronunciado hoy delante del pueblo, cuando habéis interpuesto entre Dios y vosotros un juramento, asegurando que entregaríais la ciudad a nuestros enemigos si en el plazo convenido no os enviaba socorro el Señor.
12 This is not a word that may draw down mercy, but rather that may stir up wrath, and enkindle indignation.	12 ¿Quiénes sois vosotros para permitiros hoy poner a Dios a prueba y suplantar a Dios entre los hombres?
13 You have set a time for the mercy of the Lord, and you have appointed him a day, according to your pleasure.	13 ¡Así tentáis al Señor Onmipotente, vosotros que nunca llegaréis a comprender nada!
14 But forasmuch as the Lord is patient, let us be penitent for this same thing, and with many tears let us beg his pardon:	14 Nunca llegaréis a sondear el fondo del corazón humano, ni podréis apoderaros de los pensamientos de su inteligencia, pues ¿cómo vais a escrutar a Dios que hizo todas las cosas, conocer su inteligencia y comprender sus pensamientos? No, hermanos, no provoquéis la cólera del Señor, Dios nuestro.
15 For God will not threaten like man, nor be inflamed to anger like the son of man.	15 Si no quiere socorrernos en el plazo de cinco días, tiene poder para protegernos en cualquier otro momento, como lo tiene para aniquilarnos en presencia de nuestros enemigos.
16 And therefore let us humble our souls before him, and continuing in an humble spirit, in his service:	16 Pero vosotros no exijáis garantías a los designios del Señor nuestro Dios, porque Dios no se somete a las amenazas, como un hombre, ni se le marca, como a un hijo de hombre, una línea de conducta.
17 Let us ask the Lord with tears, that according to his will so he would shew his mercy to us: that as our heart is troubled by their pride, so also we may glorify in our humility.	17 Pidámosle más bien que nos socorra, mientras esperamos confiadamente que nos salve. Y él escuchará nuestra súplica, si le place hacerlo.
18 For we have not followed the sins of our fathers, who forsook their God, and worshipped strange gods.	18 «Verdad es que no hay en nuestro tiempo ni en nuestros días tribu, familia, pueblo o ciudad de las nuestras que se postre ante dioses hechos por mano de hombre, como sucedió en otros tiempos,
19 For which crime they were given up to their enemies, to the sword, and to pillage, and to confusion: but we know no other God but him.	19 en castigo de lo cual fueron nuestros padres entregados a la espada y al saqueo, y sucumbieron desastradamente ante sus enemigos.
20 Let us humbly wait for his consolation, and the Lord our God will require our blood of the afflictions of our enemies, and he will humble all the nations that shall rise up against us, and bring them to disgrace.	20 Pero nosotros no conocemos otro Dios que él, y en esto estriba nuestra esperanza de que no nos mirará con desdén ni a nosotros ni a ninguno de nuestra raza.
21 And now, brethren, as you are the ancients among the people of God, and their very soul resteth upon you: comfort their hearts by your speech, that they may be mindful how our fathers were tempted that they might be proved, whether they worshipped their God truly.	21 «Porque si de hecho se apoderan de nosotros, caerá todo Judea; nuestro santuario será saqueado y nosotros tendremos que responder de esta profanación con nuestra propia sangre.
22 They must remember how our father Abraham was tempted, and being proved by many tribulations, was made the friend of God.	22 La muerte de nuestros hermanos, la deportación de esta tierra y la devastación de nuestra heredad, caerá sobre nuestras cabezas, en medio de las naciones en que estemos como esclavos y seremos para nuestros amos escarnio y mofa,
23 go Isaac, so Jacob, so Moses, and all that have pleased God, passed through many tribulations, remaining faithful.	23 ya que nuestra esclavitud no concluiría en benevolencia, sino que el Señor nuestro Dios la convertiría en deshonra.
24 But they that did not receive the trials with the fear of the Lord, but uttered their impatience and the reproach of their murmuring against the Lord,	24 Ahora, pues, hermanos, mostremos a nuestros hermanos que su vida depende de nosotros y que sobre nosotros se apoyan las cosas sagradas, el Templo y el altar.
25 Were destroyed by the destroyer, and perished by serpents.	25 «Por todo esto, debemos dar gracias al Señor nuestro Dios que ha querido probarnos como a nuestros padres.
26 As for us therefore let us not revenge ourselves for these things which we suffer	26 Recordad lo que hizo con Abraham, las pruebas por que hizo pasar a Isaac, lo que aconteció a Jacob en Mesopotamia de Siria, cuando pastoreaba los rebaños de Labán, el hermano de su madre.
27 But esteeming these very punishments to be less than our sins deserve, let us believe that these scourges of the Lord, with which like servants we are chastised, have happened for our amendment, and not for our destruction.	27 Como les puso a ellos en el crisol para sondear sus corazones, así el Señor nos hiere a nosotros, los que nos acercamos a él, no para castigarnos, sino para amonestarnos».
28 And Ozias and the ancients said to her: All things which thou hast spoken are true, and there is nothing to be reprehended in thy words.	28 Ozías respondió: «En todo cuanto has dicho, has hablado con recto juicio y nadie podrá oponerse a tus razones,
29 Now therefore pray for us, for thou art a holy woman, and one fearing God.	29 ya que no has empezado hoy a dar muestras de tu sabiduría, sino que de antiguo conoce todo el pueblo tu inteligencia y la bondad de los pensamientos que forma tu corazón.
30 And Judith said to them: As you know that what I have been able to say is of God:	30 Pero el pueblo padecía gran sed y nos obligaron a pronunciar aquellas palabras, y a comprometernos con un juramento que no podemos violar.
31 So that which I intend to do prove ye if it be of God, and pray that God may strengthen my design.	31 Ahora, pues, tú que eres una mujer piadosa, pide por nosotros al Señor que envíe lluvia para llenar nuestras cisternas, y así no nos veamos acabados».
32 You shall stand at the gate this night, and I will go out with my maidservant: and pray ye, that as you have said, in five days the Lord may look down upon his people Israel.	32 Respondió Judit: «Escuchadme. Voy a hacer algo que se transmitirá de generación en generación entre los hijos de nuestra raza.
33 But I desire that you search not into what I am doing, and till I bring you word let nothing else be done but to pray for me to the Lord our God.	33 Estad esta noche a la puerta de la ciudad. Yo saldré con mi sierva y antes del plazo que os habéis fijado para entregar la ciudad a nuestros enemigos, visitará el Señor a Israel por mi mano.
34 And Ozias the prince of Juda said to her: Go in peace, and the Lord be with thee to take revenge of our enemies. So returning they departed.	34 No intentéis averiguar lo que quiero hacer, pues no lo diré hasta no haberlo cumplido».
	35 Ozías y los jefes le dijeron: «Vete en paz y que el Señor Dios te preceda para tomar venganza de nuestros enemigos».
	36 Y dejando el aposento, regresaron a sus puestos.
