DOUAI-RHEIMSBIBLES DES PEUPLES
And Abia slept with his fathers, and they buried him in the city of David: and Asa his son reigned in his stead: in his days the land was quiet ten years.1 Aza fit ce qui est juste et droit au regard de Yahvé son Dieu.
And Asa did that which was good and pleasing in the sight of his God, and he destroyed the altars of foreign worship, and the high places.2 Il supprima les autels étrangers ainsi que les Hauts-Lieux, il brisa les pierres dressées et coupa les pieux sacrés.
And broke the statues, and cut down the groves.3 Il ordonna aux Judéens de rechercher Yahvé, le Dieu de leurs pères, et de pratiquer la Loi et le Commandement.
And he commanded Juda to seek the Lord the God of their fathers, and to do the law, and all the commandments.4 Dans toutes les villes de Juda il supprima les Hauts-Lieux et les autels à encens. Le royaume fut en paix sous son autorité.
And he took away out of all the cities of Juda the altars, and temples, and reigned in peace.5 Il reconstruisit les villes fortifiées de Juda, car le pays était en paix et en ces années-là personne ne lui fit la guerre: Yahvé lui donna un temps de repos.
He built also strong cities in Juda, for he was quiet, and there had no wars risen in his time, the Lord giving peace.6 Il dit donc à Juda: “Construisons ces villes, entourons-les de remparts, de tours, de portes et de verrous pendant que nous sommes maîtres du pays. Nous avons recherché Yahvé notre Dieu, lui aussi nous a recherchés et nous a procuré la paix de tous côtés.” Ils menèrent à bien leurs constructions.
And he said to Juda: Let us build these cities, and compass them with walls, and fortify them with towers, and gates, and bars, while all is quiet from wars, because we have sought the Lord the God of our fathers, and he hath given us peace round about. So they built, and there was no hinderance in building.7 L’armée d’Aza comptait 300 000 hommes de Juda portant le grand bouclier et la lance, et 280 000 hommes de Benjamin portant le bouclier rond et sachant tirer à l’arc: tous étaient des guerriers entraînés.
And Asa had in his army of men that bore shields and spears of Juda three hundred thousand, and of Benjamin that bore shields and drew bows, two hundred and eighty thousand, all these were most valiant men.8 Zérah le Kouchite vint les attaquer avec une armée de mille milliers d’hommes et de trois cents chars: ils arrivèrent à Marécha.
And Zara the Ethiopian came out against them with his army of ten hundred thousand men, and with three hundred chariots: and he came as far as Maresa.9 Aza sortit à sa rencontre, on se rangea en bataille dans la vallée de Séfata, près de Marécha.
And Asa went out to meet him, and set his army in array for battle in the vale of Sephata, which is near Maresa:10 Aza pria alors Yahvé, son Dieu: “Yahvé, dit-il, lorsque tu veux secourir, il n’y a pas de différence pour toi entre le puissant et le faible. Secours-nous, Yahvé, notre Dieu! C’est sur toi que nous comptons et c’est en ton Nom que nous marchons contre cette foule. Yahvé, tu es notre Dieu, qu’un homme ne l’emporte pas sur toi!”
And he called upon the Lord God, and said: O Lord, there is no difference with thee, whether thou help with few, or with many: help us, O Lord our God: for with confidence in thee, and in thy name, we are come against this multitude. O Lord thou art our God, let not man prevail against thee.11 Yahvé battit les Kouchites devant Aza et devant Juda, et les Kouchites prirent la fuite.
And the Lord terrified the Ethiopians before Asa and Juda: and the Ethiopians fled.12 Aza et son armée les poursuivirent jusqu’à Guérar; il tomba tellement de Kouchites qu’il n’en resta rien: Yahvé et son armée les avaient brisés. On emporta un énorme butin.
And Asa and the people that were with him pursued them to Gerara: and the Ethiopians fell even to utter destruction, for the Lord slew them, and his army fought against them, and they were destroyed. And they took abundance of spoils,13 On frappa toutes les villes autour de Guérar, car la frayeur de Yahvé pesait sur elles, et l’on pilla toutes ces villes où l’on trouva un butin considérable.
And they took all the cities round about Gerara: for a great fear was come upon all men: and they pillaged the cities, and carried off much booty.14 On s’en prit même aux tentes des nomades et l’on emporta quantité de petit bétail et de chameaux, puis on rentra à Jérusalem.
And they destroyed the sheepcotes, and took an infinite number of cattle, and of camels: and returned to Jerusalem.
