1 And it came to pass after this, that the king of the children of Ammon died, and Hanon his son reigned in his stead.	1 En ce temps-là mourut le roi des Ammonites, son fils Anoun régna à sa place.
2 And David said: I Will shew kindness to Hanon the son of Daas, as his father shewed kindness to me. So David sent his servants to comfort him for the death of his father. But when the servants of David were come into the land of the children of Ammon,	2 David se dit: “Je serai plein d’attentions pour Anoun, fils de Nahach, puisque son père a fait la même chose pour moi.” David envoya donc ses serviteurs pour lui présenter ses condoléances à l’occasion de la mort de son père. Mais lorsque les serviteurs de David arrivèrent chez les Ammonites,
3 The princes of the children of Ammon said to Hanon their lord: Thinkest thou that for the honour of thy father, David hath sent comforters to thee, and hath not David rather sent his servants to thee to search, and spy into the city, and overthrow it?	3 les princes Ammonites dirent à leur maître Anoun: “Penses-tu donc que David a envoyé ses messagers avec des condoléances pour honorer ton père? Il les a sûrement envoyés pour espionner la ville, pour en connaître les défenses et s’en emparer?”
4 Wherefore Hanon took the servants of David, and shaved off the one half of their beards, and cut away half of their garments even to the buttocks, and sent them away.	4 Alors Anoun saisit les serviteurs de David, il leur rasa la moitié de la barbe, coupa leurs vêtements à la hauteur des fesses et les renvoya;
5 When this was told David, he sent to meet them: for the men were sadly put to confusion, and David commanded them, saying: Stay at Jericho, till your beards be grown, and then return.	5 En apprenant cela, David envoya quelqu’un à leur rencontre car ces hommes étaient couverts de honte. Il leur fit dire: “Restez à Jéricho jusqu’à ce que votre barbe ait repoussé, vous reviendrez ensuite.”
6 And the children of Ammon seeing that they had done an injury to David, Bent and hired the Syrians of Rohob, and the Syrians of Soba, twenty thousand footmen, and of the king of Maacha a thousand men, and of Istob twelve thousand men.	6 Les Ammonites se rendirent bien compte qu’ils s’étaient rendus odieux à David; ils engagèrent donc à leur service les Araméens de Beth-Réhob et les Araméens de Soba, au nombre de 20 000 hommes. Ils engagèrent également le roi de Maaka avec 1 000 hommes et 12 000 hommes de Tob.
7 And when David heard this, he sent Joab and the whole army of warriors.	7 Quand David apprit cela, il envoya Joab avec toute l’armée et les troupes d’élite.
8 And the children of Ammon came out, and set their men in array at the entering in of the gate: but the Syrians of Soba, and of Rohob, and of Istob, and of Maacha were by themselves in the field.	8 Les Ammonites sortirent et se rangèrent en bataille à l’entrée de la porte, tandis que les Araméens de Soba et de Réhob avec les gens de Tob et de Maaka restaient en rase campagne.
9 Then Joab seeing that the battle was prepared against him, both before and behind, chose of all the choice men of Israel, and put them in array against the Syrians:	9 Joab se retrouva donc avec des ennemis devant lui et derrière lui. Il choisit les troupes d’élite d’Israël et les rangea face aux Araméens,
10 And the rest of the people he delivered to Abisai his brother, who set them in array against the children of Ammon.	10 puis il confia à son frère Abisaï le reste du peuple, et celui-ci les rangea face aux Ammonites.
11 And Joab said: If the Syrians are too strong for me, then thou shalt help me: but if the children of Ammon are too strong for thee, then I will help thee.	11 Il dit alors: “Si les Araméens sont plus forts que moi, tu viendras à mon secours, si les Ammonites sont plus forts que toi, je viendrai à ton secours.
12 Be of good courage, and let us fight for our people, and for the city of our God: and the Lord will do what is good in his sight.	12 Sois fort, montrons-nous courageux pour notre peuple et pour les villes de notre Dieu; Yahvé fera ce qui lui semblera bon.”
13 And Joab and the people that were with him, began to fight against the Syrians: and they immediately fled before him.	13 Joab s’avança avec son armée pour combattre les Araméens, et ils s’enfuirent devant lui.
14 And the children of Ammon seeing that the Syrians were fled, they fled also before Abisai, and entered into the city: and Joab returned from the children of Ammon, and came to Jerusalem.	14 Lorsque les Ammonites virent que les Araméens fuyaient, eux aussi tournèrent le dos devant Abisaï et rentrèrent en ville. Alors Joab mit fin à la campagne contre les Ammonites et rentra à Jérusalem.
15 Then the Syrians seeing that they had fallen before Israel, gathered themselves together.	15 Voyant qu’ils avaient été battus par Israël, les Araméens rassemblèrent leurs forces.
16 And Adarezer sent and fetched the Syrians, that were beyond the river, and brought over their army: and Sobach, the captain of the host of Adarezer, was their general.	16 Hadadézer envoya des messagers pour appeler tous les Araméens qui étaient de l’autre côté du fleuve et ils se rassemblèrent à Hélam; Chobak, le chef de l’armée de Hadadézer, était à leur tête.
17 And when this was told David, he gathered all Israel together, and passed over the Jordan, and came to Helam: and the Syrians set themselves in array against David, and fought against him.	17 Lorsque David l’apprit, il réunit tout Israël, traversa le Jourdain et arriva à Hélam.
18 And the Syrians fled before Israel, and David slew of the Syrians the men of seven hundred chariots, and forty thousand horsemen: and smote Sobach the captain of the army, who presently died.	18 Les Araméens se rangèrent en bataille face à David et le combat s’engagea. Les Araméens tournèrent le dos devant Israël et David leur tua 700 attelages et 40 000 hommes. Chobak, leur chef, fut abattu et mourut sur place.
19 And all the kings that were auxiliaries of Adarezer, seeing themselves overcome by Israel, were afraid and fled away, eight and fifty thousand men before Israel. And they made peace with Israel: and served them, and all the Syrians were afraid to help the children of Ammon any more.	19 Lorsque tous les rois, vassaux de Hadadézer, virent qu’ils avaient été battus par Israël, ils demandèrent la paix aux Israélites et firent leur soumission; à partir de ce jour les Araméens n’osèrent plus porter secours aux Ammonites.
