DOUAI-RHEIMSNEW JERUSALEM
And Dina the daughter of Lia went out to see the women of that country.1 Dinah, who was Jacob's daughter by Leah, went out to visit some of the women of that region.
And when Sichem the son of Hemor the Hevite, the prince of that land, saw her, he was in love with her: and took her away, and lay with her, ravishing the virgin.2 Shechem son of Hamor the Hivite, headman of the region, saw her, seized her and forced her tosleep with him.
And his soul was fast knit unto her, and whereas she was sad, he comforted her with sweet words.3 He was captivated by Dinah daughter of Jacob; he fel in love with the girl and tried to win her heart.
And going to Hemor his father, he said: Get me this damsel to wife.4 Accordingly Shechem said to his father Hamor, 'Get me this girl; I want to marry her.'
But when Jacob had heard this, his sons being absent, and employed in feeding the cattle, he held his peace till they came back.5 Meanwhile, Jacob had heard how his daughter Dinah had been dishonoured, but since his sons wereout in the countryside with his livestock, Jacob said nothing until they came back.
And when Hemor the father of Sichem was come out to speak to Jacob,6 Hamor father of Shechem was visiting Jacob to discuss the matter with him,
Behold his sons came from the field: and hearing what had passed, they were exceeding angry, because he had done a foul thing in Israel, and committed an unlawful act, in ravishing Jacob's daughter,7 when Jacob's sons returned from the countryside and heard the news; the men were outraged andinfuriated that Shechem had insulted Israel by sleeping with Jacob's daughter -- a thing total y unacceptable.
And Hemor spoke to them: The soul of my son Sichem has a longing for your daughter: give her him to wife:8 Hamor reasoned with them as fol ows, 'My son Shechem's heart is set on your daughter. Please al owher to marry him.
And let us contract marriages one with another: give us your daughters and take you our daughters,9 Intermarry with us; give us your daughters and take our daughters for yourselves.
And dwell with us: the land is at your command, till, trade, and possess it.10 We can live together, and the country wil be open to you, for you to live in, and move about in, andacquire holdings.'
Sichem also said to her father and to her brethren: Let me find favor in your sight: and whatsoever you shall appoint I will give.11 Then Shechem addressed the girl's father and brothers, 'Grant me this favour, and I will give youwhatever you ask.
Raise the dowery,, and ask gifts, and I will gladly give what you shall demand: only give me this damsel to wife.12 Demand as high a bride-price from me as you please, and I wil pay as much as you ask. Only let memarry the girl.'
The sons of Jacob answered Sichem and his father deceitfully, being enraged at the deflowering of their sister:13 Jacob's sons gave Shechem and his father Hamor a crafty answer, speaking as they did because hehad dishonoured their sister Dinah.
We cannot do what you demand, nor give our sister to one that is uncircumcised, which with us is unlawful and abominable.14 'We cannot do this,' they said to them. 'To give our sister to an uncircumcised man would be adisgrace for us.
But in this way may we be allied with you, if you will be like us, and all the male sex among you be circumcised:15 We can agree only on one condition: that you become like us by circumcising al your males.
Then will we mutually give and take your daughters, and ours: and we will dwell with you, and will be one people:16 Then we wil give you our daughters, taking yours for ourselves; and we wil stay with you to makeone nation.
But if you will not be circumcised, we will take our daughter and depart:17 But if you will not agree to our terms about being circumcised, we shal take our daughter and go.'
Their offer pleased Hemor, and Sichem his son:18 Hamor and Shechem son of Hamor were pleased with what they heard.
And the young man made no delay, but forthwith fulfilled what was required, for he loved the damsel exceedingly, and he was the greatest man in all his father's house.19 The young man did not hesitate about doing this, for he was deeply in love with Jacob's daughter. Moreover he was the most respected member of his entire family.
And going into the gate of the city they spoke to the people:20 Hamor and his son Shechem went to the gate of their town and spoke to their fellow-townsmen asfol ows,
These men are peaceable and willing to dwell with us: let them trade in the land, and till it, which being large and wide wanteth men to till it: we shall take their daughters for wives, and we will give them ours.21 'These men are friendly; let them settle in the region and move about freely in it; there is plenty ofroom here for them; we shal marry their daughters and give our daughters to them.
One thing there is for which so great a good is deferred: We must circumcise every male among us, following the manner of the nation.22 But these men will agree to settle with us and become a single nation only on this condition: that alour males be circumcised like them.
And their substance, and cattle, and all that they possess, shall be ours: only in this let us condescend, and by dwelling together, we shall make one people.23 Wil not the livestock they own, al their animals, become ours? Then let us give our assent to this, sothat they can settle with us.'
And they all agreed, and circumcised all the males.24 Al the citizens of the town agreed to the proposal made by Hamor and his son Shechem, and al themales were circumcised.
And behold the third day, when the pain of the wound was greatest, two of the sons of Jacob, Simeon and Levi, the brothers of Dina, taking their swords, entered boldly into the city, and slew all the men:25 Now on the third day, when the men were stil in pain, Jacob's two sons Simeon and Levi, Dinah'sbrothers, each took his sword and advanced unopposed against the town and slaughtered al the males.
And they killed also Hemor and Sichem, and took away their sister Dina, out of Sichem's house.26 They kil ed Hamor and his son Shechem with the sword, removed Dinah from Shechem's house andcame away.
And when they were gone out, the other sons of Jacob came upon the slain; and plundered the city in revenge of the rape.27 When Jacob's other sons came on the slain, they pil aged the town in reprisal for the dishonouring oftheir sister.
And they took their sheep and their herds and their asses, wasting all they had in their houses and in the fields.28 They seized their flocks, cattle, donkeys, everything else in the town and in the countryside,
and their children and wives they took captive,29 and al their possessions. They took al their children and wives captive and looted everything to befound in the houses.
And when they had boldly perpetrated these things, Jacob said to Simeon and Levi: You have troubled me, and made me hateful to the Chanaanites and Pherezites, the inhabitants of this land: we are few: they will gather themselves together and kill me; and both I, and my house, shall be destroyed.30 Jacob said to Simeon and Levi, 'You have done me an il turn by bringing me into bad odour with thepeople of the region, the Canaanites and the Perizzites. I have few men, whereas they wil unite against me todefeat me and destroy me and my family.'
They answered: Should they abuse our sister as a strumpet?31 They retorted, 'Should our sister be treated like a whore?'
