Giosuè 9

1 ORA, come tutti i re ch’erano di qua dal Giordano, nel monte, e nella pianura, e lungo tutto il lito del mar grande, fin dirimpetto al Libano, l’Hitteo, l’Amorreo, il Cananeo, il Ferizzeo, l’Hivveo, e il Gebuseo, ebbero intese queste cose,	1 And when these things were heard, all the kings across the Jordan, who lived among the mountains and plains, along the coastline and shores of the great sea, also those who were living near Lebanon, the Hittite, and the Amorite, the Canaanite, the Perizzite, and the Hivite, and the Jebusite,
2 si adunarono tutti insieme per guerreggiar con Giosuè, e con Israele, di pari consentimento	2 gathered themselves together, so that they might fight against Joshua and Israel, with one mind and with the same resolve.
3 Ma gli abitanti di Gabaon, avendo udito ciò che Giosuè avea fatto a Gerico e ad Ai,	3 But those who were living in Gibeon, hearing all that Joshua had done to Jericho and Ai,
4 si adoperarono anch’essi, ma con inganno; perciocchè andarono, e fecero provvisione di vittuaglia, e presero de’ sacchi logori, sopra i loro asini, e degli otri di vino logori, ch’erano stati schiantati e poi ricuciti;	4 planning cleverly, took for themselves provisions, placing old sacks upon their donkeys, and wineskins that had torn and been sewed up,
5 e de’ calzamenti logori, e risarciti ne’ piedi; e dei vestimenti logori indosso; e tutto il pane della lor provvisione era secco e mucido.	5 and having very old shoes, which had been sewn with patches indicating their age, and being clothed in old garments, having also loaves, which they carried as food for the journey, which were hard and broken into pieces.
6 E andarono a Giosuè, nel campo, in Ghilgal, e dissero a lui e a’ principali d’Israele: Noi siamo venuti di lontano paese; ora dunque fate patto con noi.	6 And they traveled to Joshua, who at that time was staying in the camp at Gilgal. And they said to him, and to all of Israel with him, “We have come from a far away land, desiring to make peace with you.” And the sons of Israel responded to them, and said,
7 E i principali d’Israele dissero a quegli Hivvei: Forse voi abitate nel mezzo di noi; come dunque faremo noi lega con voi?	7 “Perhaps instead, you live in the land which ought to be ours by lot, and we would be unable to form a pact with you.”
8 Ma essi dissero a Giosuè: Noi siamo tuoi servitori. E Giosuè disse loro: Chi siete voi, e donde venite?	8 But they said to Joshua, “We are your servants.” And Joshua said to them: “But who are you? And where are you from?”
9 Ed essi gli dissero: I tuoi servitori son venuti di molto lontan paese, alla fama del Signore Iddio tuo; perciocchè noi abbiamo udita la sua fama, e tutto ciò ch’egli ha fatto in Egitto,	9 They responded: “Your servants have arrived, from a very far away land, in the name of the Lord, your God. For we have heard about the fame of his power, all the things that he has done in Egypt,
10 e tutto ciò ch’egli ha fatto a’ due re degli Amorrei, ch’erano di là dal Giordano; a Sihon, re di Hesbon, e ad Og, re di Basan, che dimorava in Astarot.	10 and to the two kings of the Amorites, who were beyond the Jordan: Sihon, the king of Heshbon, and Og, the king of Bashan, who was at Ashtaroth.
11 E i nostri Anziani, e tutti gli abitanti del nostro paese, ci hanno detto: Prendete in mano della provvisione per lo viaggio, e andate incontro a coloro, e dite loro: Noi siamo vostri servitori; fate dunque patto con noi.	11 And our elders, and all the inhabitants of our land, have said to us: ‘Take in hand provisions for the very long journey, and meet with them, and say: We are your servants; form a pact with us.’
12 Quest’è il nostro pane; noi lo prendemmo caldo dalle case nostre per nostra provvisione, nel giorno che partimmo per venire a voi; ma ora, ecco egli è secco, ed è diventato mucido;	12 Lo, the loaves were taken up warm when we departed from our houses, so that we might come to you. Now they have become dry and broken, due to age.
13 e questi sono gli otri del vino, i quali noi empiemmo tutti nuovi; ed ecco, sono schiantati; e questi nostri vestimenti, e i nostri calzamenti, si son logorati per lo molto lungo viaggio.	13 These wineskins were new when we filled them, now they are torn and broken. The garments we are wearing, and the shoes we have on our feet, due to the great length of the distance, have become worn and are nearly consumed.”
14 E que’ personaggi presero della lor provvisione, e non domandarono la bocca del Signore	14 And so they accepted this, because of their provisions, and they did not consult the mouth of the Lord.
15 E Giosuè fece pace con loro, e patteggiò con loro, che li lascerebbe vivere; e i principali della raunanza lo giurarono loro.	15 And Joshua made peace with them, and entering into a pact, he promised that they would not be put to death. The leaders of the multitude also swore to them.
16 Ma tre giorni appresso ch’ebbero fatto patto con loro, intesero ch’erano lor vicini, e che abitavano nel mezzo di loro.	16 Then, three days after the pact was formed, they heard that they lived in the vicinity, and that they would soon be among them.
17 Perciocchè al terzo giorno, i figliuoli d’Israele si mossero, e vennero alle lor città, ch’erano Gabaon, e Chefira, e Beerot, e Chiriat-iearim.	17 And so the sons of Israel moved the camp, and they arrived at their cities on the third day, those which are called: Gibeon, and Chephirah, and Beeroth, and Kiriath-jearim.
18 E i figliuoli d’Israele non li percossero; perciocchè i principali della raunanza aveano giurato loro per lo Signore Iddio d’Israele. E tutta la raunanza mormorò contro a’ principali	18 And they did not strike them, because the leaders of the multitude had sworn to them in the name of the Lord, the God of Israel. And so all of the common people murmured against the leaders.
19 E tutti i principali dissero a tutta la raunanza: Noi abbiamo loro giurato per lo Signore Iddio d’Israele; perciò ora non li possiam toccare.	19 And they responded to them: “We have sworn to them in the name of the Lord, the God of Israel, and for that reason, we are not able to touch them.
20 Facciamo loro questo, e lasciamoli vivere; acciocchè non vi sia indegnazione contro a noi, per cagione del giuramento che abbiamo loro fatto.	20 But we shall do this to them: Certainly, let them be preserved so that they may live, lest the wrath of the Lord be stirred up against us, since we would have sworn falsely.
21 Così i principali dissero loro, che si lascerebbero vivere; ma furono ordinati tagliatori di legne, e attignitori d’acqua, per tutta la raunanza; come i principali dissero loro	21 But though they live, let them serve the entire multitude by cutting wood and carrying water.” And while they were discussing these things,
22 Giosuè adunque li chiamò, e parlò loro, dicendo: Perchè ci avete voi ingannati, dicendo: Noi siamo d’un paese molto lontan da voi; e pur voi abitate nel mezzo di noi?	22 Joshua called the Gibeonites, and he said to them: “Why would you be willing to deceive us by fraud, saying, ‘We live very far away from you,’ when you are in our midst?
23 Ora dunque voi siete maledetti, e giammai non sarà che non vi sieno d’infra voi de’ servi, e de’ tagliatori di legne, e degli attignitori di acqua, per la Casa dell’Iddio mio.	23 Therefore, you shall be under a curse, and your stock shall not cease to be cutters of wood and carriers of water, into the house of my God.”
24 Ed essi risposero a Giosuè, e dissero: Noi l’abbiam fatto, perciocchè era stato rapportato per cosa certa a’ tuoi servitori ciò che il Signore Iddio tuo avea comandato a Mosè, suo servitore, di darvi tutto il paese, e di distruggere d’innanzi a voi tutti gli abitanti del paese; laonde noi, temendo grandemente di voi per le nostre persone, abbiamo fatto questa cosa;	24 And they responded: “It was reported to us, your servants, that the Lord your God had promised his servant Moses that he would give you the entire land, and that he would destroy all its inhabitants. Therefore, we were very afraid, and we made a provision for our lives, compelled by the dread of you, and we undertook this counsel.
25 e ora eccoci nelle tue mani; fa’ inverso noi come ti parrà buono e diritto di farci.	25 And now we are in your hand. Act toward us as it seems good and right to you.”
26 Egli adunque fece loro così; e li scampò dalle mani de’ figliuoli d’Israele, sì che non li ammazzarono.	26 Therefore, Joshua did just as he had said, and he freed them from the hand of the sons of Israel, so that they would not be killed.
27 E in quel giorno Giosuè li ordinò tagliatori di legne, e attignitori d’acqua, per la raunanza, e per l’Altare del Signore, in qualunque luogo egli eleggerebbe; il che dura fino al dì d’oggi	27 And he decreed on that day, that they would be in the ministry of all the people and of the altar of the Lord, cutting wood and carrying water, even until this present time, in the place which the Lord had chosen.
