1 COME è oscurato l’oro, Ed ha mutato colore il buon oro fino, E sono le pietre del santuario state sparse In capo d’ogni strada!	1 How tarnished is the gold, how changed the noble metal; How the sacred stones lie strewn at every street corner!
2 Come i nobili figliuoli di Sion, Pregiati al pari dell’ottimo oro, Sono stati reputati quali vaselli di terra, Lavoro di man di vasellaio!	2 Zion's precious sons, fine gold their counterpart, Now worth no more than earthen jars made by the hands of a potter!
3 Vi sono anche de’ gran pesci marini che porgon le poppe, E lattano i lor figli; Ma la figliuola del mio popolo è divenuta crudele, Come gli struzzi nel deserto.	3 Even the jackals bare their breasts and suckle their young; The daughter of my people has become as cruel as the ostrich in the desert.
4 La lingua del bambino di poppa Si è attaccata al suo palato, per la sete; I fanciulli hanno chiesto del pane, E non vi era alcuno che ne distribuisse loro.	4 The tongue of the suckling cleaves to the roof of its mouth in thirst; The babes cry for food, but there is no one to give it to them.
5 Quelli che mangiavano cibi delicati Son periti per le strade; Quelli ch’erano stati allevati sopra lo scarlatto Hanno abbracciato il letame.	5 Those accustomed to dainty food perish in the streets; Those brought up in purple now cling to the ash heaps.
6 E la pena dell’iniquità della figliuola del mio popolo è stata maggiore Che la pena del peccato di Sodoma, Che fu sovvertita come in un momento, Senza che la mano d’alcuno si levasse contro di lei.	6 The punishment of the daughter of my people is greater than the penalty of Sodom, Which was overthrown in an instant without the turning of a hand.
7 I principi di essa erano più puri che neve, Più candidi che latte, Vermigli del corpo più che gemme, Puliti come zaffiri.	7 Brighter than snow were her princes, whiter than milk, More ruddy than coral, more precious than sapphire.
8 Il loro sguardo è divenuto fosco più che la nerezza stessa; Non si son riconosciuti per le piazze; La lor pelle si è attaccata alle loro ossa; È seccata, è divenuta come legno.	8 Now their appearance is blacker than soot, they are unrecognized on the streets; Their skin shrinks on their bones, as dry as wood.
9 Più felici sono stati gli uccisi con la spada, Che quelli che son morti di fame; Perciocchè, essendo traffitti, il sangue loro è colato, E non hanno più avuto bisogno della rendita del campo.	9 Better for those who perish by the sword than for those who die of hunger, Who waste away, as though pierced through, lacking the fruits of the field!
10 Donne pietose, colle proprie mani, Hanno cotti i loro figliuoli: Quelli sono loro stati per cibo, Nella ruina della figliuola del mio popolo.	10 The hands of compassionate women boiled their own children, To serve them as mourners' food in the downfall of the daughter of my people.
11 Il Signore ha adempiuta la sua ira, Ha sparso l’ardor del suo cruccio, Ed ha acceso un fuoco in Sion, Che ha consumati i fondamenti di essa.	11 The LORD has spent his anger, poured out his blazing wrath; He has kindled a fire in Zion that has consumed her foundations.
12 I re della terra, e tutti gli abitatori del mondo, Non avrebbero mai creduto Ch’entrasse nemico, nè avversario Dentro alle porte di Gerusalemme	12 The kings of the earth did not believe, nor any of the world's inhabitants, That enemy or foe could enter the gates of Jerusalem.
13 Quest’è avvenuto per i peccati de’ profeti di essa, Per l’iniquità de’ suoi sacerdoti, Che spandevano nel mezzo di essa Il sangue de’ giusti.	13 Because of the sins of her prophets and the crimes of her priests, Who shed in her midst the blood of the just!--
14 I ciechi sono andati vagando per le strade, Si son contaminati di sangue, L’han toccato co’ lor vestimenti, Senza poterlo schivare.	14 They staggered blindly in the streets, soiled with blood, So that people could not touch even their garments:
15 Ei si gridava loro: Traetevi addietro; ciò è immondo; Traetevi addietro, nol toccate; E pur se ne volavano via, e andavano errando. Ei si è detto fra le genti: Essi non potran più dimorare nel lor paese.	15 "Away you unclean!" they cried to them, "Away, away, do not draw near!" If they left and wandered among the nations, nowhere could they remain.
16 La faccia del Signore li ha dispersi; Egli non continuerà più a riguardarli; Non hanno avuto alcun rispetto a’ sacerdoti, Nè pietà de’ vecchi.	16 The LORD himself has dispersed them, he regards them no more; He does not receive the priests with favor, nor show kindness to the elders.
17 Mentre siamo durati, i nostri occhi si son consumati Dietro al nostro soccorso, che non è stato altro che vanità; Noi abbiam riguardato nella nostra vedetta Ad una gente che non potea salvare.	17 Our eyes ever wasted away, looking in vain for aid; From our watchtower we watched for a nation that could not save us.
18 Ci hanno cacciati, seguendo i nostri passi, Sì che non siam potuti andar per le nostre campagne; Il nostro fine si è avvicinato, i nostri dì son compiuti; Perciocchè il nostro fine è venuto.	18 Men dogged our steps so that we could not walk in our streets; Our end drew near, and came; our time had expired.
19 Quelli che ci hanno perseguiti Sono stati più leggieri che le aquile del cielo; Ci son corsi dietro in su i monti, Ci han posti agguati nel deserto.	19 Our pursuers were swifter than eagles in the air, They harassed us on the mountains and waylaid us in the desert.
20 Il respiro delle nostre nari, L’Unto del Signore, di cui noi dicevamo: Noi viveremo alla sua ombra fra le genti, È stato preso nelle lor trappole	20 The anointed one of the LORD, our breath of life, was caught in their snares, He in whose shadow we thought we could live on among the nations.
21 Gioisci pure, e rallegrati, figliuola di Edom; Tu che abiti nel paese di Us, Sopra te ancora passerà la coppa; Tu ne sarai inebbriata, e ti scoprirai.	21 Though you rejoice and are glad, O daughter Edom, you who dwell in the land of Uz, To you also shall the cup be passed; you shall become drunk and naked.
22 La pena della tua iniquità è finita, figliuola di Sion; Egli non ti farà più menare in cattività; Egli farà punizione della tua iniquità, figliuola di Edom; Egli scoprirà i tuoi peccati	22 Your chastisement is completed, O daughter Zion, he will not prolong your exile; But your wickedness, O daughter Edom, he will punish, he will lay bare your sins.
