DIODATI	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Come la neve non si conviene alla state, Nè la pioggia al tempo della ricolta, Così la gloria non si conviene allo stolto	1 Snow no more befits the summer, nor rain the harvest-time, than honours befit a fool.
2 Come il passero vaga, e la rondinella vola, Così la maledizione data senza cagione non avverrà	2 As the sparrow escapes, and the swal ow flies away, so the undeserved curse will never hit its mark.
3 La sferza al cavallo, ed il capestro all’asino, E il bastone al dosso degli stolti	3 A whip for the horse, a bridle for the donkey, and for the backs of fools, a stick.
4 Non rispondere allo stolto secondo la sua follia; Che talora anche tu non gli sii agguagliato.	4 Do not answer a fool in the terms of his fol y for fear you grow like him yourself.
5 Rispondi allo stolto, come si conviene alla sua follia; Che talora non gli paia d’esser savio	5 Answer a fool in the terms of his fol y for fear he imagine himself wise.
6 Chi si taglia i piedi ne beve l’ingiuria; Così avviene a chi manda a far de’ messi per uno stolto.	6 He wounds himself, he takes violence for his drink, who sends a message by a fool.
7 Lo zoppo zoppica delle sue due gambe; Così fa la sentenza nella bocca degli stolti.	7 Unreliable as the legs of the lame, so is a proverb in the mouth of fools.
8 Chi dà gloria allo stolto Fa come chi gittasse una pietra preziosa in un mucchio di sassi.	8 As wel tie the stone to the sling as pay honour to a fool.
9 La sentenza nella bocca degli stolti È come una spina, che sia caduta in mano ad un ebbro	9 A thorn branch in a drunkard's hand, such is a proverb in the mouth of fools.
10 I grandi tormentano ognuno, E prezzolano stolti, e salariano passanti	10 An archer wounding everyone, such is he who hires the passing fool and drunkard.
11 Come il cane ritorna al suo vomito, Così lo stolto reitera la sua follia	11 As a dog returns to its vomit, so a fool reverts to his fol y.
12 Hai tu veduto un uomo che si reputi savio? Vi è maggiore speranza d’uno stolto che di lui	12 You see someone who thinks himself wise? More to be hoped for from a fool than from him!
13 Il pigro dice: Il leopardo è in su la strada, Il leone è per le campagne	13 'A wild beast on the road!' says the idler, 'a lion in the streets!'
14 Come l’uscio si volge sopra i suoi arpioni, Così si volge il pigro sopra il suo letto	14 The door turns on its hinges, the idler on his bed.
15 Il pigro nasconde la mano nel seno; Egli dura fatica a trarla fuori per recarsela alla bocca	15 Into the dish the idler dips his hand, but is too tired to bring it back to his mouth.
16 Al pigro par di esser savio, Più che sette che dànno risposte di prudenza	16 The idler thinks himself wiser than seven people who answer with discretion.
17 Colui che passando trascorre in ira per una questione che non gli tocca, È come chi afferra un cane per gli orecchi	17 He takes a stray dog by the ears, who meddles in someone else's quarrel.
18 Quale è colui che, infingendosi di scherzare, avventa razzi, Saette, e cose mortifere;	18 Like a madman hurling firebrands, arrows and death,
19 Tale è colui che inganna il suo prossimo, E dice: Non ischerzo io?	19 so is anyone who lies to a companion and then says, 'Aren't I amusing?'
20 Il fuoco si spegne, quando mancano legne; Così le contese si acquetano, quando non vi son rapportatori.	20 No wood, and the fire goes out; no slanderer, and quarrel ing dies down.
21 Il carbone è per far brace, e le legne per far fuoco; E l’uomo rissoso per accender contese.	21 Charcoal for live embers, wood for fire, and the quarrelsome for kindling strife.
22 Le parole del rapportatore paiono lusinghevoli; Ma scendono fin dentro al ventre	22 The words of a slanderer are tasty morsels that go right down into the bel y.
23 Le labbra ardenti, e il cuor malvagio, Son come schiuma d’argento impiastrata sopra un testo	23 Base silver-plate on top of clay: such are fervent lips and a wicked heart.
24 Chi odia s’infinge nel suo parlare, Ma cova la frode nel suo interiore;	24 Whoever hates may hide it in speech, but deep within lies treachery;
25 Quando egli parlerà di una voce graziosa, non fidartici; Perciocchè egli ha sette scelleratezze nel cuore.	25 do not trust such a person's pretty speeches, since in the heart lurk seven abominations.
26 L’odio si copre con inganno; Ma la sua malignità sarà palesata in piena raunanza	26 Hatred may disguise itself with guile, to reveal its wickedness later in the assembly.
27 Chi cava una fossa caderà in essa; E se alcuno rotola una pietra ad alto, ella gli tornerà addosso	27 Whoever digs a pit fal s into it, the stone comes back on him that rol s it.
28 La lingua bugiarda odia quelli ch’ella ha fiaccati; E la bocca lusinghiera produce ruina	28 The lying tongue hates its victims, the wheedling mouth causes ruin.
