Esdra 5

DIODATI	NEW JERUSALEM
1 ALLORA il profeta Aggeo, e Zaccaria, figliuolo d’Iddo, profeti, ch’erano mandati a’ Giudei ch’erano in Giuda e in Gerusalemme, profetizzarono loro a Nome dell’Iddio d’Israele.	1 When the prophets Haggai and Zechariah son of Iddo prophesied to the Jews who were in Judah andJerusalem in the name of the God of Israel who was over them,
2 E Zorobabel, figliuolo di Sealtiel, e Iesua, figliuolo di Iosadac, si levarono, e ricominciarono ad edificar la Casa di Dio, che è in Gerusalemme; e con loro erano i profeti di Dio, i quali li confortavano	2 Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel and Jeshua son of Jozadak began rebuilding the Temple of God inJerusalem; with them were the prophets of God, supporting them.
3 In quel tempo venne a loro Tattenai, governatore di qua dal fiume, e Setarboznai, ed i lor colleghi, e dissero loro così: Chi vi ha ordinato di edificar questa Casa, e di rifar queste mura?	3 It was then that Tattenai governor of Transeuphrates, Shethar-Bozenai and their associates came tothem and asked, 'Who gave you the order to rebuild this Temple and complete this structure?
4 Allora noi rispondemmo loro sopra ciò, dicendo loro i nomi di quelli ch’edificavano questo edificio.	4 What are the names of the men putting up this building?'
5 Ora, perciocchè l’occhio dell’Iddio loro era sopra gli Anziani de’ Giudei, coloro non li fecero cessare, finchè la cosa pervenne a Dario; e allora riportarono lettere sopra ciò.	5 But the eyes of their God were watching over the elders of the Jews, so they were not forced to stopuntil a report could reach Darius and an official reply about the matter could be received from him.
6 Tenor delle lettere, le quali Tattenai, governatore di qua dal fiume, e Setarboznai, ed i suoi colleghi Afarsechei, che erano di qual dal fiume, mandarono al re Dario;	6 A copy of the letter which Tattenai, governor of Transeuphrates, Shethar-Bozenai and his associates,the officials in Transeuphrates, sent to King Darius.
7 nelle quali gli mandarono il fatto. E così era scritto in esse: Al re Dario ogni salute.	7 They sent him a report which ran as fol ows: 'To King Darius, hearty greetings!
8 Il re sappia che noi siamo andati nella provincia della Giudea, alla Casa del grande Iddio, la quale si edifica di pietre pulite; e già i legnami son posti in su le pareti; e questa opera si fa in fretta, e si avanza nelle mani di quella gente.	8 'The king should be informed that we went to the province of Judah, to the Temple of the great God,which is being rebuilt with large stones; beams are being embedded in the walls; the work is being carried outenergetical y and is making good progress.
9 Avendo ciò veduto, abbiamo domandato a quegli Anziani, e abbiam loro detto così: Chi vi ha ordinato di edificar questa Casa, e di rifar queste mura?	9 Questioning these elders, we asked them, "Who gave you permission to rebuild this Temple andcomplete this structure?"
10 Abbiamo loro eziandio domandati i nomi di coloro, per farteli assapere: acciocchè ti scrivessimo i nomi di quelli che sono i principali fra loro.	10 We also asked them their names, to inform you, so that we could record the names of the men whowere their leaders.
11 Ed essi ci hanno data questa risposta, dicendo: Noi siamo servitori dell’Iddio del cielo e della terra; e riedifichiamo la Casa, la quale era già molti anni innanzi stata edificata; la quale un gran re d’Israele avea già edificata e compiuta.	11 'They gave us the fol owing answer, "We are the servants of the God of heaven and earth; we arerebuilding the Temple built many years ago, which a great king of Israel had built and completed.
12 Ma dopo che i nostri padri ebbero provocato ad ira l’Iddio del cielo, egli li diede nelle mani di Nebucadnesar, re di Babilonia, Caldeo, il qual distrusse questa Casa, e menò in cattività il popolo di essa in Babilonia.	12 But because our ancestors angered the God of heaven, he handed them over to Nebuchadnezzar theChaldaean king of Babylon who destroyed this Temple and deported the people to Babylon.
13 Ma l’anno primo di Ciro, re di Babilonia, egli ordinò che questa Casa di Dio fosse riedificata.	13 In the first year of Cyrus king of Babylon, however, King Cyrus issued an official order that this Templeof God should be rebuilt;
14 Ed anche il re Ciro trasse fuor del tempio di Babilonia i vasellamenti d’oro e d’argento della Casa di Dio, i quali Nebucadnesar avea tratti fuor del Tempio, ch’era in Gerusalemme, e portati nel tempio di Babilonia; e quelli furon dati ad uno, nominato Sesbassar, il quale Ciro avea costituito governatore.	14 furthermore, those gold and silver articles belonging to the Temple of God, which Nebuchadnezzar hadremoved from the temple in Jerusalem and brought to the temple of Babylon, King Cyrus in turn removed fromthe temple of Babylon and handed back to a certain Sheshbazzar whom he had appointed governor.
15 E Ciro gli disse: Prendi questi vasellamenti, e va’, e li riporta al Tempio, che è in Gerusalemme; e sia la Casa di Dio riedificata nel suo luogo.	15 He said to him, 'Take these articles; go and return them to the Temple which is in Jerusalem and letthe Temple of God be rebuilt on its original site;'
16 Allora questo Sesbassar venne, e pose i fondamenti della Casa di Dio, che è in Gerusalemme; e da quel tempo infino ad ora ella si edifica, e non è ancora compiuta.	16 this Sheshbazzar then came and laid the foundations of the Temple of God in Jerusalem, and it hasbeen under construction ever since, and is not yet finished."
17 Ora dunque, se piace al re, ricerchisi costì nella casa de’ tesori del re, che è in Babilonia, se egli è vero che da Ciro fosse fatto comandamento che questa Casa di Dio fosse riedificata in Gerusalemme; e mandici il re la sua volontà intorno a ciò	17 'Hence, if it please the king, let search be made in the royal treasuries in Babylon, to find out if it is truethat an official order was issued by King Cyrus for this temple of God in Jerusalem to be rebuilt; and let the king'sdecision on this matter be sent to us.'
