EL LIBRO DEL PUEBLO DE DIOS	NEW JERUSALEM
1 En aquel tiempo, cuando no había rey en Israel, un levita que vivía como forastero en los confines de la montaña de Efraím, tomó por concubina a una mujer de Belén de Judá.	1 In those days, when there was no king in Israel, there was a man, a Levite, whose home was deep inthe highlands of Ephraim. He took as concubine a woman from Bethlehem in Judah.
2 Pero su concubina le fue infiel y lo abandonó, yéndose a la casa de su padre en Belén de Judá, donde permaneció unos cuatro meses.	2 In a fit of anger his concubine left him and went back to her father's house at Bethlehem in Judah, andshe stayed there for some time -- four months.
3 Entonces su marido fue detrás de ella, para hablarle al corazón y hacerla volver. El llevaba consigo un servidor y dos asnos. La joven lo hizo entrar en la casa de su padre, y este, al verlo, le salió al encuentro lleno de alegría.	3 Her husband then set out after her, to appeal to her affections and fetch her back; he had his servantand two donkeys with him. As he was arriving at the house of the girl's father, the father saw him and camehappily to meet him.
4 Su suegro, el padre de la joven, lo retuvo en su casa, y el levita se quedó con el tres días: comieron, bebieron y pasaron la noche allí.	4 His father-in-law, the girl's father, kept him there; and he stayed with him for three days; they ate anddrank and spent the nights there.
5 Al cuarto día, se levantaron de madrugada y el levita se dispuso a partir. Pero el padre de la joven dijo a su yerno: «Repara tus fuerzas con un pedazo de pan, y luego partirán».	5 On the fourth day they got up early, and the Levite was preparing to leave when the girl's father said tohis son-in-law, 'Have something to eat to gather strength; you can leave later.'
6 Entonces se sentaron a comer y beber los dos juntos. El padre de la joven le dijo: «Te invito a quedarte esta noche, para pasar un momento agradable».	6 So they sat down and began eating and drinking, the two of them together; then the girl's father said tothe young man, 'Please agree to spend tonight here too and enjoy yourself.'
7 El hombre se levantó para ponerse en camino, pero su suegro le insistió tanto, que él cambió de parecer y pasó la noche allí.	7 And when the man got up to leave, the father-in-law pressed him again, and he spent another nightthere.
8 Al quinto día, se dispuso a partir de madrugada, pero su suegro le dijo: «Repara antes tus fuerzas». Y se entretuvieron, comiendo los dos juntos hasta muy avanzado el día.	8 On the fifth day, the Levite got up early to leave, but the girl's father said to him, 'Please gatherstrength first!' So they stayed on until the sun began to go down, and the two men had a meal together.
9 Cuando el levita se levantó para partir con su concubina y su servidor, el padre de la joven le dijo: «Ya se está haciendo tarde. Quédate aquí esta noche y pasarás un momento agradable. Mañana de madrugada se pondrán en camino y regresarás a tu casa».	9 The husband was getting up to leave with his concubine and his servant when his father-in-law, thegirl's father, said, 'Look, day is fading into evening. Please spend the night here. Look, the day is nearly over.Spend the night here and enjoy yourself. Then, early tomorrow, you can leave on your journey and go backhome.'
10 Pero el hombre no quiso quedarse, sino que se levantó y partió. Así llegó frente a Jebús –o sea, Jerusalén– llevando consigo los dos asnos cargados, además de su concubina y su servidor.	10 But the man, refusing to stay the night, got up and went on his way, until he arrived within sight ofJebus -- that is, Jerusalem. He had with him two donkeys saddled, his concubine and his servant.
11 Cuando estaban cerca de Jebús, ya era muy tarde, y el servidor dijo a su señor: «Apartémonos del camino para entrar en esta ciudad jebusea y pasar la noche allí»	11 By the time they were near Jebus, the light was going fast. The servant said to his master, 'Come on,please, let us turn off into this Jebusite town and spend the night there.'
12 Pero su señor le respondió: «No nos apartemos para entrar en una ciudad extranjera, que no pertenece a los israelitas. Sigamos de largo hasta Guibeá».	12 His master replied, 'We shal not turn off into a town of foreigners, of people who are not Israelites;we shal go on to Gibeah.'
13 Luego dijo a su servidor: «Vamos a acercarnos a uno de esos poblados ; pasaremos la noche en Guibeá o en Ramá».	13 He then said to his servant, 'Come on, we shal try to reach one or other of those places, eitherGibeah or Ramah, and spend the night there.'
14 Siguieron de largo, y a la puesta del sol estuvieron frente a Guibeá de Benjamín.	14 So they kept going and went on with their journey. As they approached Gibeah in Benjamin, the sunwas setting.
15 Entonces se apartaron del camino para ir a pasar la noche a Guibeá. Al llegar, el hombre se quedó en la plaza de la ciudad, pero nadie los invitó a su casa para pasar la noche.	15 So they turned that way to spend the night in Gibeah. Once inside, the Levite sat down in the townsquare, but no one offered to take them in for the night.
16 Entonces llegó un anciano, que al atardecer volvía de trabajar en el campo. Era un hombre de la montaña de Efraím y residía en Guibeá como forastero, porque la gente del lugar era benjaminita.	16 Eventual y, an old man came along at nightfal from his work in the fields. He too was from thehighlands of Ephraim, although he was living in Gibeah; the people of the place, however, were Benjaminites.
17 El anciano alzó los ojos y vio al viajero que estaba en la plaza de la ciudad. «¿De dónde vienes y adónde vas?» le preguntó,	17 Looking up, he saw the travel er in the town square. 'Where are you going?' said the old man, 'Andwhere have you come from?'
18 «Estamos de paso, le respondió él; venimos de Belén de Judá y vamos hasta los confines de la montaña de Efraím, porque yo soy de allí. Fui a Belén de Judá, y ahora estoy de regreso. Pero no hay nadie que me reciba en su casa,	18 'We are on our way', the other replied, 'from Bethlehem in Judah to a place deep in the highlands ofEphraim. That is where I come from. I have been to Bethlehem in Judah and now I am going home, but no onehas offered to take me into his house,
19 aunque tenemos paja y forraje para nuestros asnos, y también pan y vino para mí, para mi mujer y para el servidor que me acompaña. No nos falta nada».	19 although we have straw and provender for our donkeys, and I also have bread and wine for myself,and this maidservant and the young man who is travelling with your servant; we are short of nothing.'
20 El anciano le dijo: «La paz esté contigo. Yo proveeré a todas tus necesidades. No pases la noche en la plaza».	20 'Welcome,' said the old man. 'I shal see that you have al you want. You cannot spend the night inthe square.'
21 Entonces lo llevó a su casa y dio de comer a los asnos. Y ellos se lavaron los pies, comieron y bebieron.	21 So he took him into his house and gave the donkeys provender. The travel ers washed their feet,then ate and drank.
22 Estaban pasando un momento agradable, cuando los hombres de la ciudad, gente pervertida, rodearon la casa y comenzaron a golpear la puerta, diciendo al anciano dueño de casa: «Trae afuera el hombre que entró en tu casa para que tengamos relaciones con él».	22 While they were enjoying themselves, some townsmen, scoundrels, came crowding round the house;they battered on the door and said to the old man, master of the house, 'Send out the man who went into yourhouse, we should like to have intercourse with him!'
23 Pero el dueño de casa se presentó ante ellos y les dijo: «No, hermanos míos, no obren tan perversamente, porque ese hombre es mi huésped. ¡No cometan esa infamia!	23 The master of the house went out to them and said, 'No, brothers, please, do not be so wicked. Sincethis man is now under my roof, do not commit such an infamy.
24 Yo tengo a mi hija que es virgen: se la traeré afuera, para que ustedes abusen de ella y la traten como mejor les parezca. Pero no cometan semejante infamia con ese hombre».	24 Here is my daughter; she is a virgin; I shal bring her out to you. Il -treat her, do what you please withher, but do not commit such an infamy against this man.'
25 Sin embargo, ellos no quisieron escucharlo. Entonces el levita tomó a su concubina y la llevó afuera. Los hombres se aprovecharon de ella y la maltrataron toda la noche hasta la madrugada, y al amanecer, la abandonaron.	25 But the men would not listen to him. So the Levite took hold of his concubine and brought her out tothem. They had intercourse with her and ill-treated her al night til morning; when dawn was breaking they let hergo.
26 La mujer llegó de madrugada y se cayó a la entrada de la casa del hombre donde estaba su marido. Allí quedó hasta que fue el día.	26 At daybreak the girl came and fel on the threshold of her husband's host, and she stayed there until itwas light.
27 Por la mañana, su marido se levantó, abrió la puerta de la casa y salió para continuar el camino. Al ver a la mujer, su concubina, que estaba tendida a la puerta de la casa, con la mano sobre el umbral,	27 In the morning her husband got up and, opening the door of the house, was going out to continue hisjourney when he saw the woman, his concubine, lying at the door of the house with her hands on the threshold.
28 le dijo: «Levántate, vamos». Pero no obtuvo respuesta. Entonces el hombre la cargó sobre su asno y emprendió el camino hacia su pueblo.	28 'Get up,' he said, 'we must leave!' There was no answer. He then loaded her on his donkey andbegan the journey home.
29 Cuando llegó a su casa, tomó el cuchillo y partió en doce pedazos el cuerpo de su concubina. Luego los envió a todo el territorio de Israel.	29 Having reached his house, he took his knife, took hold of his concubine and cut her, limb by limb, into twelve pieces; he then sent her throughout the territory of Israel.
30 El levita había dado esta orden a sus emisarios: «Digan esto a todos los hombres de Israel: «¿Ha sucedido una cosa igual desde que los israelitas subieron del país de Egipto hasta el día de hoy? Reflexionen, deliberen y decidan». Y todos los que lo venían, exclamaban: ¡Nunca ha sucedido no se ha visto una cosa semejante, desde que los israelitas subieron de Egipto hasta el día de hoy!».	30 He gave instructions to his messengers, 'This is what you are to say to al the Israelites, "Hasanything like this been done since the day when the Israelites came out of Egypt until today? Take this to heart,discuss it; then give your verdict." ' And al who saw it declared, 'Never has such a thing been done or been seensince the Israelites came out of Egypt until today.'
