1 Queridos míos, no crean a cualquiera que se considere inspirado: pongan a prueba su inspiración, para ver si procede de Dios, porque han aparecido en el mundo muchos falsos profetas.	1 Most beloved, do not be willing to believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see if they are of God. For many false prophets have gone out into the world.
2 En esto reconocerán al que está inspirado por Dios: todo el que confiesa a Jesucristo manifestado en la carne, procede de Dios.	2 The Spirit of God may be known in this way. Every spirit who confesses that Jesus Christ has arrived in the flesh is of God;
3 Y todo el que niega a Jesús, no procede de Dios, sino que está inspirado por el Anticristo, por el que ustedes oyeron decir que vendría y ya está en el mundo.	3 and every spirit who contradicts Jesus is not of God. And this one is the Antichrist, the one that you have heard is coming, and even now he is in the world.
4 Hijos míos, ustedes son de Dios y han vencido a esos falsos profetas, porque aquel que está en ustedes es más grande que el que está en el mundo.	4 Little sons, you are of God, and so you have overcome him. For he who is in you is greater than he who is in the world.
5 Ellos son del mundo, por eso hablan el lenguaje del mundo y el mundo los escucha.	5 They are of the world. Therefore, they speak about the world, and the world listens to them.
6 Nosotros, en cambio, somos de Dios. El que conoce a Dios nos escucha, pero el que no es de Dios no nos escucha. Y en esto distinguiremos la verdadera de la falsa inspiración.	6 We are of God. Whoever knows God, listens to us. Whoever is not of God, does not listen to us. In this way, we know the Spirit of truth from the spirit of error.
7 Queridos míos, amémonos los unos a los otros, porque el amor procede de Dios, y el que ama ha nacido de Dios y conoce a Dios.	7 Most beloved, let us love one another. For love is of God. And everyone who loves is born of God and knows God.
8 El que no ama no ha conocido a Dios, porque Dios es amor.	8 Whoever does not love, does not know God. For God is love.
9 Así Dios nos manifestó su amor: envió a su Hijo único al mundo, para que tuviéramos Vida por medio de él.	9 The love of God was made apparent to us in this way: that God sent his only-begotten Son into the world, so that we might live through him.
10 Y este amor no consiste en que nosotros hayamos amado a Dios, sino en que él nos amó primero, y envió a su Hijo como víctima propiciatoria por nuestros pecados.	10 In this is love: not as if we had loved God, but that he first loved us, and so he sent his Son as a propitiation for our sins.
11 Queridos míos, si Dios nos amó tanto, también nosotros debemos amarnos los unos a los otros.	11 Most beloved, if God has so loved us, we also ought to love one another.
12 Nadie ha visto nunca a Dios: si nos amamos los unos a los otros, Dios permanece en nosotros y el amor de Dios ha llegado a su plenitud en nosotros.	12 No one has ever seen God. But if we love one another, God abides in us, and his love is perfected in us.
13 La señal de que permanecemos en él y él permanece en nosotros, es que nos ha comunicado su Espíritu.	13 In this way, we know that we abide in him, and he in us: because he has given to us from his Spirit.
14 Y nosotros hemos visto y atestiguamos que el Padre envió al Hijo como Salvador del mundo.	14 And we have seen, and we testify, that the Father has sent his Son to be the Savior of the world.
15 El que confiesa que Jesús es el Hijo de Dios, permanece en Dios, y Dios permanece en él.	15 Whoever has confessed that Jesus is the Son of God, God abides in him, and he in God.
16 Nosotros hemos conocido el amor que Dios nos tiene y hemos creído en él. Dios es amor, y el que permanece en el amor permanece en Dios, y Dios permanece en él.	16 And we have known and believed the love that God has for us. God is love. And he who abides in love, abides in God, and God in him.
17 La señal de que el amor ha llegado a su plenitud en nosotros, está en que tenemos plena confianza ante el día del Juicio, porque ya en este mundo somos semejantes a él.	17 In this way, the love of God is perfected with us, so that we may have confidence on the day of judgment. For as he is, so also are we, in this world.
18 En el amor no hay lugar para el temor: al contrario, el amor perfecto elimina el temor, porque el temor supone un castigo, y el que teme no ha llegado a la plenitud del amor.	18 Fear is not in love. Instead, perfect love casts out fear, for fear pertains to punishment. And whoever fears is not perfected in love.
19 Nosotros amamos porque Dios nos amó primero.	19 Therefore, let us love God, for God first loved us.
20 El que dice: «Amo a Dios», y no ama a su hermano, es un mentiroso. ¿Cómo puede amar a Dios, a quien no ve, el que no ama a su hermano, a quien ve?	20 If anyone says that he loves God, but hates his brother, then he is a liar. For he who does not love his brother, whom he does see, in what way can he love God, whom he does not see?
21 Este es el mandamiento que hemos recibido de él: el que ama a Dios debe amar también a su hermano.	21 And this is the commandment that we have from God, that he who loves God must also love his brother.
