Hechos de los Apóstoles 5

EL LIBRO DEL PUEBLO DE DIOS	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Un hombre llamado Ananías, junto con su mujer, Safira, vendió una propiedad,	1 There was also a man cal ed Ananias. He and his wife, Sapphira, agreed to sel a property;
2 y de acuerdo con ella, se guardó parte del dinero y puso el resto a disposición de los Apóstoles.	2 but with his wife's connivance he kept back part of the price and brought the rest and presented it to theapostles.
3 Pedro le dijo: «Ananías, ¿por qué dejaste que Satanás se apoderara de ti hasta el punto de engañar al Espíritu Santo, guardándote una parte del dinero del campo?	3 Peter said, 'Ananias, how can Satan have so possessed you that you should lie to the Holy Spirit andkeep back part of the price of the land?
4 ¿Acaso no eras dueño de quedarte con él? Y después de venderlo, ¿no podías guardarte el dinero? ¿Cómo se te ocurrió hacer esto? No mentiste a los hombres sino a Dios».	4 While you stil owned the land, wasn't it yours to keep, and after you had sold it wasn't the money yoursto do with as you liked? What put this scheme into your mind? You have been lying not to men, but to God.'
5 Al oír estas palabras, Ananías cayó muerto. Un gran temor se apoderó de todos los que se enteraron de lo sucedido.	5 When he heard this Ananias fel down dead. And a great fear came upon everyone present.
6 Vinieron unos jóvenes, envolvieron su cuerpo y lo llevaron a enterrar.	6 The younger men got up, wrapped up the body, carried it out and buried it.
7 Unas tres horas más tarde, llegó su mujer, completamente ajena a lo ocurrido.	7 About three hours later his wife came in, not knowing what had taken place.
8 Pedro le preguntó: «¿Es verdad que han vendido el campo en tal suma?». Ella respondió: «Sí, en esa suma».	8 Peter chal enged her, 'Tel me, was this the price you sold the land for?' 'Yes,' she said, 'that was theprice.'
9 Pedro le dijo: «¿Por qué se han puesto de acuerdo para tentar así al Espíritu del Señor? Mira junto a la puerta las pisadas de los que acaban de enterrar a tu marido; ellos también te van a llevar a ti».	9 Peter then said, 'Why did you and your husband agree to put the Spirit of the Lord to the test? Listen! Atthe door are the footsteps of those who have buried your husband; they wil carry you out, too.'
10 En ese mismo momento, ella cayó muerta a sus pies; los jóvenes, al entrar, la encontraron muerta, la llevaron y la enterraron junto a su marido.	10 Instantly she dropped dead at his feet. When the young men came in they found she was dead, andthey carried her out and buried her by the side of her husband.
11 Un gran temor se apoderó entonces de toda la Iglesia y de todos los que oyeron contar estas cosas.	11 And a great fear came upon the whole church and on al who heard it.
12 Los Apóstoles hacían muchos signos y prodigios en el pueblo. Todos solían congregarse unidos en un mismo espíritu, bajo el pórtico de Salomón,	12 The apostles worked many signs and miracles among the people. One in heart, they al used to meetin the Portico of Solomon.
13 pero ningún otro se atrevía a unirse al grupo de los Apóstoles, aunque el pueblo hablaba muy bien de ellos.	13 No one else dared to join them, but the people were loud in their praise
14 Aumentaba cada vez más el número de los que creían en el Señor, tanto hombres como mujeres.	14 and the numbers of men and women who came to believe in the Lord increased steadily. Many signsand wonders were worked among the people at the hands of the apostles
15 Y hasta sacaban a los enfermos a las calles, poniéndolos en catres y camillas, para que cuando Pedro pasara, por lo menos su sombra cubriera a alguno de ellos.	15 so that the sick were even taken out into the streets and laid on beds and sleeping-mats in the hopethat at least the shadow of Peter might fal across some of them as he went past.
16 La multitud acudía también de las ciudades vecinas a Jerusalén, trayendo enfermos o poseídos por espíritus impuros, y todos quedaban curados.	16 People even came crowding in from the towns round about Jerusalem, bringing with them their sickand those tormented by unclean spirits, and al of them were cured.
17 Intervino entonces el Sumo Sacerdote con todos sus partidarios, los de la secta de los saduceos. Llenos de envidia,	17 Then the high priest intervened with all his supporters from the party of the Sadducees. Fil ed withjealousy,
18 hicieron arrestar a los Apóstoles y los enviaron a la prisión pública.	18 they arrested the apostles and had them put in the public gaol.
19 Pero durante la noche, el Angel del Señor abrió las puertas de la prisión y los hizo salir. Luego les dijo:	19 But at night the angel of the Lord opened the prison gates and said as he led them out,
20 «Vayan al Templo y anuncien al pueblo todo lo que se refiere a esta nueva Vida».	20 'Go and take up position in the Temple, and tel the people all about this new Life.'
21 Los Apóstoles, obedecieron la orden, entraron al Templo en las primeras horas del día, y se pusieron a enseñar. Entre tanto, llegaron el Sumo Sacerdote y sus partidarios, convocaron al Sanedrín y a todo el Senado del pueblo de Israel, y mandaron a buscarlos a la cárcel.	21 They did as they were told; they went into the Temple at dawn and began to preach. When the highpriest arrived, he and his supporters convened the Sanhedrin -- this was the ful Senate of Israel -- and sent tothe gaol for them to be brought.
22 Cuando llegaron los guardias a la prisión, no los encontraron. Entonces volvieron y dijeron:	22 But when the officials arrived at the prison they found they were not inside, so they went back and reported,
23 «Encontramos la prisión cuidadosamente cerrada y a los centinelas de guardia junto a las puertas, pero cuando las abrimos, no había nadie adentro».	23 'We found the gaol securely locked and the warders on duty at the gates, but when we unlocked thedoor we found no one inside.'
24 Al oír esto, el jefe del Templo y los sumos sacerdotes quedaron perplejos y no podían explicarse qué había sucedido.	24 When the captain of the Temple and the chief priests heard this news they wondered what could behappening.
25 En ese momento llegó uno, diciendo: «Los hombres que ustedes arrestaron, están en el Templo y enseñan al pueblo».	25 Then a man arrived with fresh news. 'Look!' he said, 'the men you imprisoned are in the Temple. Theyare standing there preaching to the people.'
26 El jefe de la guardia salió con sus hombres y trajeron a los Apóstoles, pero sin violencia, por temor a ser apedreados por el pueblo.	26 The captain went with his men and fetched them -- though not by force, for they were afraid that thepeople might stone them.
27 Los hicieron comparecer ante el Sanedrín, y el Sumo Sacerdote les dijo:	27 When they had brought them in to face the Sanhedrin, the high priest demanded an explanation.
28 «Nosotros les habíamos prohibido expresamente predicar en ese Nombre, y ustedes han llenado Jerusalén con su doctrina. ¡Así quieren hacer recaer sobre nosotros la sangre de ese hombre!».	28 'We gave you a strong warning', he said, 'not to preach in this name, and what have you done? Youhave fil ed Jerusalem with your teaching, and seem determined to fix the guilt for this man's death on us.'
29 Pedro, junto con los Apóstoles, respondió: «Hay que obedecer a Dios antes que a los hombres.	29 In reply Peter and the apostles said, 'Obedience to God comes before obedience to men;
30 El Dios de nuestros padres ha resucitado a Jesús, al que ustedes hicieron morir suspendiéndolo del patíbulo.	30 it was the God of our ancestors who raised up Jesus, whom you executed by hanging on a tree.
31 A él, Dios lo exaltó con su poder, haciéndolo Jefe y Salvador, a fin de conceder a Israel la conversión y el perdón de los pecados.	31 By his own right hand God has now raised him up to be leader and Saviour, to give repentance andforgiveness of sins through him to Israel.
32 Nosotros somos testigos de estas cosas, nosotros y el Espíritu Santo que Dios ha enviado a los que le obedecen».	32 We are witnesses to this, we and the Holy Spirit whom God has given to those who obey him.'
33 Al oír estas palabras, ellos se enfurecieron y querían matarlos.	33 This so infuriated them that they wanted to put them to death.
34 Pero un fariseo, llamado Gamaliel, que era doctor de la Ley, respetado por todo el pueblo, se levantó en medio del Sanedrín. Después de hacer salir por un momento a los Apóstoles,	34 One member of the Sanhedrin, however, a Pharisee called Gamaliel, who was a teacher of the Lawrespected by the whole people, stood up and asked to have the men taken outside for a time.
35 dijo a los del Sanedrín: «Israelitas, cuídense bien de lo que van a hacer con esos hombres.	35 Then he addressed the Sanhedrin, 'Men of Israel, be careful how you deal with these people.
36 Hace poco apareció Teudas, que pretendía ser un personaje, y lo siguieron unos cuatrocientos hombres; sin embargo, lo mataron, sus partidarios se dispersaron, y ya no queda nada.	36 Some time ago there arose Theudas. He claimed to be someone important, and col ected about fourhundred fol owers; but when he was kil ed, al his fol owers scattered and that was the end of them.
37 Después de él, en la época del censo, apareció Judas de Galilea, que también arrastró mucha gente: igualmente murió, y todos sus partidarios se dispersaron.	37 And then there was Judas the Galilean, at the time of the census, who attracted crowds of supporters;but he was kil ed too, and al his fol owers dispersed.
38 Por eso, ahora les digo: No se metan con esos hombres y déjenlos en paz, porque si lo que ellos intentan hacer viene de los hombres, se destruirá por sí mismo,	38 What I suggest, therefore, is that you leave these men alone and let them go. If this enterprise, thismovement of theirs, is of human origin it wil break up of its own accord;
39 pero si verdaderamente viene de Dios, ustedes no podrán destruirlos y correrán el riesgo de embarcarse en una lucha contra Dios». Los del Sanedrín siguieron su consejo:	39 but if it does in fact come from God you wil be unable to destroy them. Take care not to find yourselvesfighting against God.' His advice was accepted;
40 llamaron a los Apóstoles, y después de hacerlos azotar, les prohibieron hablar en el nombre de Jesús y los soltaron.	40 and they had the apostles called in, gave orders for them to be flogged, warned them not to speak inthe name of Jesus and released them.
41 Los Apóstoles, por su parte, salieron del Sanedrín, dichosos de haber sido considerados dignos de padecer por el nombre de Jesús.	41 And so they left the presence of the Sanhedrin, glad to have had the honour of suffering humiliation forthe sake of the name.
42 Y todos los días, tanto en el Templo como en las casas, no cesaban de enseñar y de anunciar la Buena Noticia de Cristo Jesús.	42 Every day they went on ceaselessly teaching and proclaiming the good news of Christ Jesus, both inthe temple and in private houses.
