1 Estos son los términos de la carta que el profeta Jeremías envió desde Jerusalén al resto de los ancianos que estaban en el exilio, a los sacerdotes, a los profetas y a todo el pueblo que Nabucodonosor había deportado de Jerusalén a Babilonia,	1 This is the contents of the letter which the prophet Jeremiah sent from Jerusalem to the remaining elders among the exiles, to the priests, the prophets, and all the people who were exiled by Nebuchadnezzar from Jerusalem to Babylon.
2 después que partieron de Jerusalén el rey Jeconías, la reina mae, los eunucos, los príncipes de Judá y de Jerusalén, los herreros y los cerrajeros.	2 This was after King Jeconiah and the queen mother, the courtiers, the princes of Judah and Jerusalem, the artisans and the skilled workmen had left Jerusalem.
3 La carta fue llevada por Eleasá, hijo de Safán, y por Guemarías, hijo de Jilquías, a quienes Sedecías, rey de Judá, había enviado a Babilonia, para entrevistarse con Nabucodonosor, rey de Babilonia. Esa carta decía:	3 Delivered in Babylon by Elasah, son of Shaphan, and by Gemariah, son of Hilkiah, whom Zedekiah, king of Judah, sent to the king of Babylon, the letter read:
4 Así habla el Señor de los ejércitos, el Dios de Israel, a todos los desterrados que yo hice deportar de Jerusalén a Babilonia:	4 Thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, to all the exiles whom I exiled from Jerusalem to Babylon:
5 Construyan casas y habítenlas; planten huertas y coman sus frutos;	5 Build houses to dwell in; plant gardens, and eat their fruits.
6 cásense y tengan hijos e hijas; casen a sus hijos y den a sus hijas como esposas, para que tengan hijos e hijas: multiplíquense allí y no disminuyan.	6 Take wives and beget sons and daughters; find wives for your sons and give your daughters husbands, so that they may bear sons and daughters. There you must increase in number, not decrease.
7 Busquen la prosperidad del país adonde yo los he deportado, y rueguen al Señor en favor de él, porque de su prosperidad depende la prosperidad de ustedes.	7 Promote the welfare of the city to which I have exiled you; pray for it to the LORD, for upon its welfare depends your own.
8 Porque así habla el Señor de los ejércitos, el Dios de Israel: No se dejen engañar por los profetas que están en medio de ustedes, ni por sus adivinos; no escuchen los sueños que ellos sueñan,	8 thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel: Do not let yourselves be deceived by the prophets and diviners who are among you; do not listen to those among you who dream dreams.
9 porque ellos les profetizan falsamente en mi Nombre, sin que yo los haya enviado –oráculo del Señor–.	9 For they prophesy lies to you in my name; I did not send them, says the LORD.
10 Porque así habla el Señor: Una vez que se hayan cumplido setenta años para Babilonia, yo los visitaré y realizaré en favor de ustedes mi promesa, haciéndolos volver a este lugar.	10 Thus says the LORD: Only after seventy years have elapsed for Babylon will I visit you and fulfill for you my promise to bring you back to this place.
11 Porque yo conozco muy bien los planes que tengo proyectados sobre ustedes –oráculo del Señor–: son planes de prosperidad y no de desgracia, para asegurarles un porvenir y una esperanza.	11 For I know well the plans I have in mind for you, says the LORD, plans for your welfare, not for woe! plans to give you a future full of hope.
12 Entonces, cuando ustedes me invoquen y vengan a suplicarme, yo los escucharé;	12 When you call me, when you go to pray to me, I will listen to you.
13 cuando me busquen, me encontrarán, porque me buscarán de todo corazón,	13 When you look for me, you will find me. Yes, when you seek me with all your heart,
14 y yo me dejaré encontrar por ustedes –oráculo del Señor–. Yo cambiaré la suerte de ustedes y los reuniré de todas las naciones y de todos los lugares adonde los expulsé –oráculo del Señor–. Yo cambiaré la suerte de ustedes y los reuniré de todas las naciones y de todos los lugares adonde los expulsé –oráculo del Señor– y los haré volver al lugar de donde los había deportado.	14 you will find me with you, says the LORD, and I will change your lot; I will gather you together from all the nations and all the places to which I have banished you, says the LORD, and bring you back to the place from which I have exiled you.
15 Porque ustedes dicen: «El Señor nos ha suscitado profetas en Babilonia»,	15 As for your saying, "The LORD has raised up for us prophets here in Babylon"--
16 Porque así habla el Señor al rey que sienta en el trono de David y a todo el pueblo que habita en esta ciudad, a sus hermanos que no partieron con ustedes al exilio;	16 Thus says the LORD concerning the king who sits on David's throne, and all the people who remain in this city, your brethren who did not go with you into exile;
17 así habla el Señor de los ejércitos: Yo enviaré contra ellos la espada, el hambre y la peste; los haré semejantes a higos en mal estado, que de tan malos no se pueden comer;	17 thus says the LORD of hosts: I am sending against them sword, famine and pestilence. I will make them like rotten figs, too bad to be eaten.
18 los perseguiré con la espada, el hambre y la peste, y haré de ellos un objeto de terror para todos los reinos de la tierra, una imprecación y un objeto de horror, de estupor y de escarnio en todas las naciones adonde los expulsaré,	18 I will pursue them with sword, famine, and pestilence, and make them an object of horror to all the kingdoms of the earth, of malediction, astonishment, ridicule, and reproach to all the nations among which I will banish them.
19 porque no han escuchado mis palabras –oráculo del Señor–, siendo así que yo les envié incansablemente a mis servidores los profetas. Pero ustedes no me han escuchado –oráculo del Señor–	19 For they did not listen to my words, says the LORD, though I kept sending them my servants the prophets, only to have them go unheeded, says the LORD.
20 En cuanto a ustedes, todos los deportados que yo envié de Jerusalén a Babilonia, escuchen la palabra del Señor.	20 You, now, listen to the word of the LORD, all you exiles whom I sent away from Jerusalem to Babylon.
21 así habla el Señor de los ejércitos, el Dios de Israel, acerca de Ajab, hijo de Colaías, y de Sedecías, hijo de Maasías, que profetizan para ustedes la mentira en mi Nombre: Yo los entrego en manos de Nabucodonosor, rey de Babilonia, que los herirá a la vista de ustedes.	21 This is what the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, has to say about those who prophesy lies to you in my name, Ahab, son of Kolaiah, and Zedekiah, son of Maaseiah: I am handing them over to Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon, who will slay them before your eyes.
22 Y ellos darán origen a una maldición que repetirán todos los deportados de Judá en Babilonia: «¡Que el Señor te trate como a Sedecías y como a Ajab, a quienes el rey de Babilonia hizo asar en el fuego!»,	22 All the exiles of Judah in Babylon will pattern a curse after them: "May the LORD make you like Zedekiah and Ahab, whom the king of Babylon roasted in the flames."
23 porque han cometido una locura en Israel, adulterando con la mujer del prójimo y pronunciando en mi Nombre palabras que yo no les había mandado. ¡Yo lo sé y soy testigo! –oráculo del Señor–.	23 For they are criminals in Israel, committing adultery with their neighbors' wives, and alleging in my name things I did not command. I know, I am witness, says the LORD.
24 En cuanto a Semaías, de Nejelam, tú le dirás:	24 Say this to Shemaiah, the Nehelamite:
25 Así habla el Señor de los ejércitos, el Dios de Israel: Tú has enviado en tu nombre cartas a todo el pueblo que está en Jerusalén, al sacerdote Sofonías, hijo de Maasías, y a todos los sacerdotes, en estos términos:	25 Thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel: Because you sent letters on your own authority to all the people of Jerusalem, to all the priests and to Zephaniah, the priest, son of Maaseiah, with this message:
26 «El Señor te ha constituido sacerdote en lugar del sacerdote Iehoiadá, para que vigiles en la Casa del Señor a cualquier exaltado que quiera pasar por profeta, y lo metas en el cepo y en el calabozo.	26 "The LORD has appointed you priest in place of the priest Jehoiada, so that there may be police officers in the house of the LORD, to take action against all madmen and those who pose as prophets, by putting them into the stocks or the pillory.
27 ¿Por qué entonces no has reprendido a Jeremías de Anatot que profetiza para ustedes?	27 Why, then, do you not rebuke Jeremiah of Anathoth who poses as a prophet among you?
28 Porque él nos mandó decir a Babilonia: «Esto va para largo. Construyan casas, y habítenlas; planten huertas y coman sus frutos...»	28 For he sent us in Babylon this message: It will be a long time; build houses to live in; plant gardens and eat their fruits. . . ."
29 El sacerdote Sofonías leyó esta carta en presencia del profeta Jeremías,	29 When the priest Zephaniah read this letter to the prophet,
30 y la palabra del Señor llegó a Jeremías en estos términos:	30 the word of the LORD came to Jeremiah:
31 Envía este mensaje a todos los deportados: «Así habla el Señor acerca de Semaías, de Nejelam: Porque Semaías les ha profetizado sin que yo lo haya enviado, y les ha infundido confianza por medio de una mentira,	31 Send the message to all the exiles: Thus says the LORD concerning Shemaiah, the Nehelamite: Because Shemaiah prophesies to you without a mission from me, and raises false confidence,
32 por eso, así habla el Señor: Yo voy a castigar a Semaías, de Nejelam, y a su descendencia: ninguno de los suyos habitará en medio de este pueblo ni verá el bien que yo haré a mi pueblo –oráculo del Señor– porque él ha profetizado la rebelión contra el Señor.	32 says the LORD, I will therefore punish Shemaiah, the Nehelamite, and his offspring. None of them shall survive among this people to see the good I will do to this people, says the LORD, because he preached rebellion against the LORD.
