1 Cuando las naciones vecinas supieron que había sido reconstruido el altar y restaurado como antes el Santuario, se irritaron profundamente	1 When the Gentiles round about heard that the altar had been rebuilt and the sanctuary consecrated as before, they were very angry.
2 y decidieron acabar con los descendientes de Jacob que vivían entre ellos. Por eso comenzaron a matar y exterminar a mucha gente del pueblo.	2 So they decided to destroy the descendants of Jacob who were among them, and they began to massacre and persecute the people.
3 Judas hizo la guerra contra los descendientes de Esaú que habitaban en Idumea, en la región de Acrabatena, porque tenían asediados a los israelitas. Les infligió una gran derrota, cometiéndolos y apoderándose de sus despojos.	3 Then Judas attacked the sons of Esau at Akrabattene in Idumea, because they were blockading Israel; he defeated them heavily, overcame and despoiled them.
4 Luego se acordó de la maldad de los descendientes de Beán; que eran una trampa y un obstáculo para el pueblo por las emboscadas que le tendían en los caminos.	4 He also remembered the malice of the sons of Baean, who had become a snare and a stumbling block to the people by ambushing them along the roads.
5 Los obligó a encerrarse en sus torres, los asedió y los consagró al exterminio total, prendiendo fuego a esas torres con todos los que estaban dentro.	5 He forced them to take refuge in towers, which he besieged; he vowed their annihilation and burned down the towers along with all the persons in them.
6 Luego atacó a los amonitas, y allí encontró un fuerte ejército y una población numerosa cuyo jefe era Timoteo.	6 Then he crossed over to the Ammonites, where he found a strong army and a large body of people with Timothy as their leader.
7 Después de muchos combates, los desbarató y los deshizo.	7 He fought many battles with them, routed them, and struck them down.
8 También ocupó Iazer y sus poblados, y regresó a Judea.	8 After seizing Jazer and its villages, he returned to Judea.
9 Los pueblos de Galaad se coaligaron contra los israelitas que vivían en su territorio, para exterminarlos. Pero ellos se refugiaron en la fortaleza de Datemá,	9 The Gentiles in Gilead assembled to attack and destroy the Israelites who were in their territory; these then fled to the stronghold of Dathema.
10 desde donde enviaron una carta a Judas y a sus hermanos, diciéndoles: «Los pueblos que nos rodean se coaligaron para exterminarnos;	10 They sent a letter to Judas and his brothers saying: "The Gentiles around us have combined against us to destroy us,
11 ahora se preparan para venir a tomar la fortaleza donde nos hemos refugiado, y Timoteo está al frente de su ejército.	11 and they are preparing to come and seize this stronghold to which we have fled. Timothy is the leader of their army.
12 Ven en seguida a librarnos de sus manos, porque muchos de entre nosotros ya han caído;	12 Come at once and rescue us from them, for many of us have fallen.
13 todos nuestros hermanos que vivían en el país de Tobías han sido matados, sus mujeres y sus hijos fueron llevados cautivos y sus bienes han sido robados. Allí han muerto unos mil hombres».	13 All our kinsmen who were among the Tobiads have been killed; the Gentiles have carried away their wives and children and their goods, and they have slain there about a thousand men."
14 Cuando todavía estaban leyendo la carta, llegaron otros mensajeros de Galilea, con las vestiduras rasgadas, trayendo esta noticia:	14 While they were reading this letter, suddenly other messengers, in torn clothes, arrived from Galilee to deliver a similar message:
15 «Los habitantes de Tolemaida, de Tiro, de Sidón y de toda la Galilea de los extranjeros se han coaligado para acabar con nosotros».	15 that the inhabitants of Ptolemais, Tyre, and Sidon, and the whole of Gentile Galilee had joined forces to destroy them.
16 Apenas Judas y el pueblo oyeron estas noticias, reunieron una gran asamblea para deliberar sobre lo que debían hacer en favor de sus hermanos que se encontraban en un aprieto, amenazados por sus enemigos.	16 When Judas and the people heard this, a great assembly convened to consider what they should do for their unfortunate kinsmen who were being attacked by enemies.
17 Judas dijo a su hermano Simón: «Elige algunos hombres y ve a librar a tus hermanos de Galilea; mi hermano Jonatán y yo iremos a la región de Galaad».	17 Judas said to his brother Simon: "Choose men for yourself, and go, rescue your kinsmen in Galilee; I and my brother Jonathan will go to Gilead."
18 Dejó para defender a Judea a José, hijo de Zacarías, y a Azarías, jefe del pueblo, con el resto del ejército,	18 In Judea he left Joseph, son of Zechariah, and Azariah, leader of the people, with the rest of the army to guard it.
19 dándoles esta orden: «Tomen el mando de estas tropas, pero no entren en batalla con los paganos hasta que nosotros volvamos».	19 "Take charge of these people," he commanded them, "but do not fight against the Gentiles until we return."
20 Se le asignaron tres mil hombres a Simón para la campaña de Galilea y ocho mil a Judas para la de Galaad.	20 Three thousand men were allotted to Simon, to go into Galilee, and eight thousand men to Judas, for Gilead.
21 Simón partió para Galilea y luego de librar muchos combates con los paganos, los derrotó, los obligó a huir	21 Simon went into Galilee and fought many battles with the Gentiles. They were crushed before him,
22 y los persiguió hasta las puertas de Tolemaida. Allí sucumbieron unos tres mil hombres y Judas se apoderó del botín.	22 and he pursued them to the very gate of Ptolemais. About three thousand men of the Gentiles fell, and he gathered their spoils.
23 Luego tomó consigo a los judíos de Galilea y de Arbatá, con sus mujeres, sus hijos y todos sus bienes, y en medio de una gran alegría los llevó a Judea.	23 He took with him the Jews who were in Galilee and in Arbatta, with their wives and children and all that they had, and brought them to Judea with great rejoicing.
24 Judas Macabeo y su hermano Jonatán, por su parte, atravesaron el Jordán y caminaron tres días por el desierto.	24 Judas Maccabeus and his brother Jonathan crossed the Jordan and marched for three days through the desert.
25 Allí se encontraron con los nabateos, que los recibieron amistosamente y los pusieron al tanto de lo que les ocurría a sus hermanos de la región de Galaad;	25 There they met some Nabateans, who received them peacefully and told them all that had happened to the Jews in Gilead:
26 muchos de ellos se encontraban prisioneros en Bosorá y Bosor, en Alemá, Casfó, Maqued y Carnain, que eran ciudades fuertes e importantes;	26 "Many of them have been imprisoned in Bozrah, in Bosor near Alema, in Chaspho, Maked, and Carnaim"--all of these are large, fortified cities--

28 Inmediatamente, Judas dio vuelta con su ejército y se dirigió por el desierto hacia Bosorá, ocupó la ciudad y después de pasar al filo de la espada a todos los varones, la saqueó por completo y la incendió.	28 Thereupon Judas suddenly changed direction with his army, marched across the desert to Bozrah, and captured the city. He slaughtered all the male population, took all their possessions, and set fire to the city.
29 Partió de allí por la noche y avanzó hasta la fortaleza.	29 He led his army from that place by night, and they marched toward the stronghold of Dathema.
30 Al llegar el día, los judíos divisaron una muchedumbre innumerable que levantaba escaleras y empalizadas para tomar la fortaleza y había pasado a la ofensiva.	30 When morning came, they looked ahead and saw a countless multitude of people, with ladders and devices for capturing the stronghold, and beginning to attack the people within.
31 Al ver que el ataque ya había comenzado y que el griterío de la ciudad y el sonido de las trompetas subía hasta el cielo,	31 When Judas perceived that the struggle had begun and that the noise of the battle was resounding to heaven with trumpet blasts and loud shouting,
32 Judas dijo a sus hombres: «¡Luchen hoy por nuestros hermanos!».	32 he said to the men of his army, "Fight for our kinsmen today."
33 Luego los ordenó en tres columnas y los hizo avanzar por detrás del enemigo, tocando las trompetas y orando a gritos.	33 He came up behind them with three columns blowing their trumpets and shouting in prayer.
34 Las tropas de Timoteo, apenas se enteraron que era el Macabeo, huyeron ante él. Judas les infligió una gran derrota, y ese día dejaron tendidos unos ocho mil hombres.	34 When the army of Timothy realized that it was Maccabeus, they fell back before him, and he inflicted on them a crushing defeat. About eight thousand of their men fell that day.
35 Luego se volvió contra Alemá; la atacó, la ocupó y, después de matar a todos los varones, la saqueó y la incendió.	35 Then he turned toward Alema and attacked and captured it; he killed all the male population, plundered the place, and burned it down.
36 Partiendo de allí, se apoderó de Casfó, Maqued, Bosor y de las demás ciudades de Galaad.	36 From there he moved on and took Chaspho, Maked, Bosor, and the other cities of Gilead.
37 Después de estos acontecimientos, Timoteo reunió un nuevo ejército y acampó frente a Rafón, al otro lado del torrente.	37 After these events Timothy assembled another army and camped opposite Raphon, on the other side of the stream.
38 Judas mandó a explorar el campamento y le dieron este informe: «Todas las naciones vecinas se han unido a Timoteo y forman un ejército muy numeroso.	38 Judas sent men to spy on the camp, and they reported to him: "All the Gentiles around us have rallied to him, making a very large force;
39 Además, tienen como auxiliares a mercenarios árabes. Ahora están acampados al otro lado del torrente, preparados para atacarle». Entonces Judas salió a su encuentro,	39 they have also hired Arabs to help them, and have camped beyond the stream, ready to attack you." So Judas went forward to attack them.
40 y mientras él se acercaba al torrente con su ejército, Timoteo dijo a sus capitanes: «Si él lo pasa primero y viene sobre nosotros, no podremos resistir, y nos vencerá seguramente;	40 As Judas and his army were approaching the running stream, Timothy said to the officers of his army: "If he crosses over to us first, we shall not be able to resist him; he will certainly defeat us.
41 pero si se atemoriza y acampa al otro lado del río, lo atravesaremos nosotros, caeremos sobre él y lo venceremos».	41 But if he is afraid and camps on the other side of the river, we will cross over to him and defeat him."
42 Cuando Judas llegó al borde del torrente, ubicó a los escribas del pueblo a la orilla y les dio esta orden: «No dejen que ningún hombre quede en el campamento, sino que todos vayan al combate».	42 But when Judas reached the running stream, he stationed the officers of the people beside the stream and gave them this order: "Do not allow any man to pitch a tent; all must go into battle."
43 El fue el primero en cruzar el río en dirección al enemigo, y toda su gente lo siguió. Todos los paganos quedaron derrotados ante ellos, arrojaron sus armas y corrieron a refugiarse en el templo de Carnain.	43 He was the first to cross to the attack, with all the people behind him, and the Gentiles were crushed before them; they threw away their arms and fled to the temple enclosure at Carnaim.
44 Pero los judíos se apoderaron de la ciudad y quemaron el templo con todos los que había adentro. Carnain fue sometida, y ya nadie pudo resistir a Judas.	44 The Jews captured that city and burnt the enclosure with all who were in it. So Carnaim was subdued, and Judas met with no more resistance.
45 Judas reunió a todos los israelitas de la región de Galaad, del más pequeño al más grande, con sus mujeres, sus hijos y sus equipajes, para llevarlos al país de Judá: era una inmensa muchedumbre.	45 Then he assembled all the Israelites, great and small, who were in Gilead, with their wives and children and their goods, a great crowd of people, to go into the land of Judah.
46 Llegaron a Efrón, ciudad importante y muy fortificada, que estaba sobre el camino, por la que tenían que pasar necesariamente, ya que no era posible desviarse ni a la derecha ni a la izquierda.	46 When they reached Ephron, a large and strongly fortified city along the way, they found it impossible to encircle it on either the right or the left; they would have to march right through it.
47 Pero los habitantes de la ciudad les negaron el paso y bloquearon las entradas con piedras.	47 But the men in the city shut them out and blocked up the gates with stones.
48 Judas les envió un mensaje en son de paz, diciéndoles: «Permítannos pasar por el territorio de ustedes, para ir a nuestro país; nadie les hará ningún mal, sólo queremos pasar». Como ellos se negaron a abrirle,	48 Then Judas sent them this peaceful message: "We wish to cross your territory in order to reach our own; no one will harm you; we will only march through." But they would not open to him.
49 Judas hizo anunciar en el campamento que cada uno tomara posición donde se encontraba.	49 So Judas ordered a proclamation to be made in the camp that everyone make an attack from the place where he was.
50 Los soldados ocuparon sus posiciones, y Judas atacó la ciudad todo aquel día y toda la noche, hasta que cayó en sus manos.	50 When the men of the army took up their positions, he assaulted the city all that day and night, and it was delivered to him.
51 Hizo pasar al filo de la espada a todos los varones, arrasó la ciudad, la saqueó y la atravesó por encima de los cadáveres.	51 He slaughtered every male, razed and plundered the city, and passed through it over the slain.
52 Después pasaron el Jordán en dirección a la gran llanura que está frente a Betsán.	52 Then they crossed the Jordan to the great plain in front of Beth-shan;
53 Durante todo el trayecto, Judas fue recogiendo a los rezagados y animando al pueblo hasta llegar a la tierra de Judá.	53 and Judas kept rounding up the stragglers and encouraging the people the whole way, until he reached the land of Judah.
54 Todos subieron al monte Sión con júbilo y alegría, y ofrecieron holocaustos por haber regresado sanos y salvos sin perder a ninguno de los suyos.	54 They ascended Mount Zion in joy and gladness and offered holocausts, because not one of them had fallen; they had returned in safety.
55 Cuando Judas y Jonatán estaban en el país de Galaad, y su hermano Simón en Galilea, frente Tolemaida,	55 During the time that Judas and Jonathan were in the land of Gilead, and Simon his brother was in Galilee opposite Ptolemais,
56 José, hijo de Zacarías, y Azarías, jefes del ejército, al oír las proezas y combates que aquellos habían llevado a cabo,	56 Joseph, son of Zechariah, and Azariah, the leaders of the army, heard about the brave deeds and the fighting that they were doing.
57 dijeron: «Hagámonos célebres también nosotros, luchando contra los paganos que nos rodean».	57 They said, "Let us also make a name for ourselves by going out and fighting against the Gentiles around us."
58 Entonces ordenaron a las tropas que estaban bajo su mando que avanzaran sobre Iamnia.	58 They gave orders to the men of their army who were with them, and marched toward Jamnia.
59 Gorgias salió de la ciudad con su ejército para luchar contra ellos.	59 But Gorgias and his men came out of the city to meet them in battle.
60 José y Azarías fueron derrotados y perseguidos hasta la frontera de Judea. Aquel día cayeron alrededor de dos mil israelitas.	60 Joseph and Azariah were beaten, and were pursued to the frontiers of Judea, and about two thousand Israelites fell that day.
61 Este fue un grave desastre para el pueblo por no haber obedecido a Judas y a sus hermanos, creyéndose capaces de grandes hazañas.	61 It was a bad defeat for the people, because they had not obeyed Judas and his brothers, thinking that they would do brave deeds.
62 Pero ellos no pertenecían a la estirpe de aquellos hombres a quienes estaba confiada la salvación de Israel.	62 But they did not belong to the family of those men to whom it was granted to achieve Israel's salvation.
63 El valiente Judas y sus hermanos alcanzaron gran celebridad en todo Israel en todas las naciones donde se oía hablar de ellos.	63 The valiant Judas and his brothers were greatly renowned in all Israel and among all the Gentiles, wherever their name was heard;
64 La gente se agolpaba a su alrededor para aclamarlos.	64 and men gathered about them and praised them.
65 Judas salió con sus hermanos para hacer la guerra a los descendientes de Esaú, en la región meridional. Se apoderó de Hebrón y de sus poblados, destruyó sus fortificaciones e incendió las torres de su alrededor.	65 Then Judas and his brothers went out and attacked the sons of Esau in the country toward the south; he took Hebron and its villages, and he destroyed its strongholds and burned the towers around it.
66 Luego partió en dirección al país de los filisteos y atravesó Marisá.	66 He then set out for the land of the Philistines and passed through Marisa.
67 Aquel día, algunos sacerdotes que querían mostrar su valentía, cayeron en el combate por salir a luchar imprudentemente.	67 At that time some priests fell in battle who had gone out rashly to fight in their desire to distinguish themselves.
68 En seguida Judas se desvió hacia Azoto, en territorio filisteo: allí derribó sus altares, incendió las estatuas de sus dioses, saqueó sus ciudades, y finalmente, regresó al país de Judea.	68 Judas then turned toward Azotus in the land of the Philistines. He destroyed their altars and burned the statues of their gods; and after plundering their cities he returned to the land of Judah.
