1 Alejandro de Macedonia, Hijo de Filipo, partió del país de Quitím, y después de derrotar a Darío, rey de los persas y los medos, reinó en lugar de él, en primer lugar sobre la Hélade.	1 After Alexander the Macedonian, Philip's son, who came from the land of Kittim, had defeated Darius, king of the Persians and Medes, he became king in his place, having first ruled in Greece.

4 Reunió un ejército poderosísimo, y sometió provincias, naciones y dinastías, que le pagaron tributo.	4 He collected a very strong army and conquered provinces, nations, and rulers, and they became his tributaries.
5 Después cayó enfermo y, comprendiendo que iba a morir,	5 But after all this he took to his bed, realizing that he was going to die.
6 convocó a sus generales, a los nobles que se habían educado con él desde su juventud y, antes de su muerte, repartió entre ellos su reino.	6 He therefore summoned his officers, the nobles, who had been brought up with him from his youth, to divide his kingdom among them while he was still alive.

He became king in the year one hundred and thirty-seven of the kingdom of the Greeks.
11 Fue entonces cuando apareció en Israel un grupo de renegados que sedujeron a muchos, diciendo: «Hagamos una alianza con las naciones vecinas, porque desde que nos separamos de ellas, nos han sobrevenido muchos males».	11 In those days there appeared in Israel men who were breakers of the law, and they seduced many people, saying: "Let us go and make an alliance with the Gentiles all around us; since we separated from them, many evils have come upon us."
12 Esta propuesta fue bien recibida,	12 The proposal was agreeable;
13 y algunos del pueblo fueron en seguida a ver al rey y este les dio autorización para seguir las costumbres de los paganos.	13 some from among the people promptly went to the king, and he authorized them to introduce the way of living of the Gentiles.
14 Ellos construyeron un gimnasio en Jerusalén al estilo de los paganos,	14 Thereupon they built a gymnasium in Jerusalem according to the Gentile custom.
15 disimularon la marca de la circuncisión y, renegando de la santa alianza, se unieron a los paganos y se entregaron a toda clase de maldades.	15 They covered over the mark of their circumcision and abandoned the holy covenant; they allied themselves with the Gentiles and sold themselves to wrongdoing.
16 Cuando Antíoco se sintió seguro de su poder, proyectó apoderarse también de Egipto, para gobernar sobre ambos reinos.	16 When his kingdom seemed secure, Antiochus proposed to become king of Egypt, so as to rule over both kingdoms.
17 Entonces entró en Egipto con un poderoso ejército, con carros, elefantes, caballería y una gran flota.	17 He invaded Egypt with a strong force, with chariots and elephants, and with a large fleet,
18 Allí atacó a Tolomeo, rey de Egipto. Este retrocedió ante él y huyó, dejando muchos muertos.	18 to make war on Ptolemy, king of Egypt. Ptolemy was frightened at his presence and fled, leaving many casualties.
19 Antíoco ocupó las ciudades fortificadas de Egipto y saqueó todo el país.	19 The fortified cities in the land of Egypt were captured, and Antiochus plundered the land of Egypt.

He stripped off everything,

24 Cargó con todo eso y regresó a su país, después de haber causado una gran masacre y de haberse jactado insolentemente.	24 Taking all this, he went back to his own country, after he had spoken with great arrogance and shed much blood.
25 Una gran consternación se extendió por todo Israel.	25 And there was great mourning for Israel, in every place where they dwelt,

29 Dos años después, el rey envió a las ciudades de Judá un recaudador de impuestos, que se presentó en Jerusalén con un poderoso ejército.	29 Two years later, the king sent the Mysian commander to the cities of Judah, and he came to Jerusalem with a strong force.
30 El les habló amistosamente, pero con la intención de engañarlos, y después que se ganó su confianza, atacó sorpresivamente a la ciudad y le asestó un terrible golpe, causando numerosas víctimas entre los israelitas.	30 He spoke to them deceitfully in peaceful terms, and won their trust. Then he attacked the city suddenly, in a great onslaught, and destroyed many of the people in Israel.
31 Luego saqueó la ciudad, la incendió, y arrasó sus casas y la muralla que la rodeaba.	31 He plundered the city and set fire to it, demolished its houses and its surrounding walls,
32 Sus hombres tomaron prisioneros a las mujeres y a los niños y se adueñaron del ganado.	32 took captive the women and children, and seized the cattle.
33 Después, levantaron en torno a la Ciudad de David una muralla alta y resistente, protegida por torres poderosas, y la convirtieron en su Ciudadela.	33 Then they built up the City of David with a high, massive wall and strong towers, and it became their citadel.
34 Allí establecieron un grupo de gente impía, sin fe y sin ley, que se fortificó en ese lugar.	34 There they installed a sinful race, perverse men, who fortified themselves inside it,
35 Lo proveyeron de armas y víveres, y depositaron allí el botín que habían reunido en el saqueo a Jerusalén. Así se convirtieron en una permanente amenaza.	35 storing up weapons and provisions, and depositing there the plunder they had collected from Jerusalem. And they became a great threat.
36 Esto llegó a ser una acechanza para el Santuario, una cruel y constante hostilidad para Israel.	36 The citadel became an ambush against the sanctuary, and a wicked adversary to Israel at all times.
37 Derramaron sangre inocente alrededor del Templo y profanaron el Lugar santo.	37 And they shed innocent blood around the sanctuary; they defiled the sanctuary.
38 A causa de ellos, huyeron los habitantes de Jerusalén y la Ciudad se convirtió en una colonia de extranjeros: se volvió extraña para los que nacieron en ella y sus propios hijos la abandonaron.	38 Because of them the inhabitants of Jerusalem fled away, and she became the abode of strangers. She became a stranger to her own offspring, and her children forsook her.
39 Su Santuario quedó devastado como un desierto, sus fiestas se transformaron en duelo, sus sábados en motivo de burla y su honor en desprecio.	39 Her sanctuary was as desolate as a wilderness; her feasts were turned into mourning, Her sabbaths to shame, her honor to contempt.
40 Tan grande fue su vergüenza como lo había sido su gloria, y su grandeza dio paso a la aflicción.	40 Her dishonor was as great as her glory had been, and her exalation was turned into mourning.
41 El rey promulgó un decreto en todo su reino, ordenando que todos formaran un solo pueblo	41 Then the king wrote to his whole kingdom that all should be one people,
42 y renunciaran a sus propias costumbres. Todas las naciones se sometieron a la orden del rey	42 each abandoning his particular customs. All the Gentiles conformed to the command of the king,
43 y muchos israelitas aceptaron el culto oficial, ofrecieron sacrificios a los ídolos y profanaron el sábado.	43 and many Israelites were in favor of his religion; they sacrificed to idols and profaned the sabbath.
44 Además, el rey envió mensajeros a Jerusalén y a las ciudades de Judá, con la orden escrita de que adoptaran las costumbres extrañas al país:	44 The king sent messengers with letters to Jerusalem and to the cities of Judah, ordering them to follow customs foreign to their land;
45 los holocaustos, los sacrificios y las libaciones debían suprimirse en el Santuario; los sábados y los días festivos debían ser profanados;	45 to prohibit holocausts, sacrifices, and libations in the sanctuary, to profane the sabbaths and feast days,
46 el Santuario y las cosas santas debían ser mancillados;	46 to desecrate the sanctuary and the sacred ministers,
47 debían erigirse altares, recintos sagrados y templos a los ídolos, sacrificando cerdos y otros animales impuros;	47 to build pagan altars and temples and shrines, to sacrifice swine and unclean animals,
48 los niños no debían ser circuncidados y todos debían hacerse abominables a sí mismos con toda clase de impurezas y profanaciones,	48 to leave their sons uncircumcised, and to let themselves be defiled with every kind of impurity and abomination,
49 olvidando así la Ley y cambiando todas las prácticas.	49 so that they might forget the law and change all their observances.
50 El que no obrara conforme a la orden del rey, debía morir.	50 Whoever refused to act according to the command of the king should be put to death.
51 En estos términos escribió a todo su reino. Además nombró inspectores sobre todo el pueblo, y ordenó a las ciudades de Judá que ofrecieran sacrificios en cada una de ellas.	51 Such were the orders he published throughout his kingdom. He appointed inspectors over all the people, and he ordered the cities of Judah to offer sacrifices, each city in turn.
52 Mucha gente del pueblo, todos los que abandonaban la Ley, se unieron a ellos y causaron un gran daño al país,	52 Many of the people, those who abandoned the law, joined them and committed evil in the land.
53 obligando a Israel a esconderse en toda clase de refugios.	53 Israel was driven into hiding, wherever places of refuge could be found.
54 El día quince del mes de Quisleu, en el año ciento cuarenta y cinco, el rey hizo erigir sobre el altar de los holocaustos la Abominación de la desolación. También construyeron altares en todas las ciudades de Judá.	54 On the fifteenth day of the month Chislev, in the year one hundred and forty-five, the king erected the horrible abomination upon the altar of holocausts, and in the surrounding cities of Judah they built pagan altars.
55 En las puertas de las casas y en las plazas se quemaba incienso.	55 They also burnt incense at the doors of houses and in the streets.
56 Se destruían y arrojaban al fuego los libros de la Ley que se encontraban,	56 Any scrolls of the law which they found they tore up and burnt.
57 y al que se descubría con un libro de la Alianza en su poder, o al que observaba los preceptos de la Ley, se lo condenaba a muerte en virtud del decreto real.	57 Whoever was found with a scroll of the covenant, and whoever observed the law, was condemned to death by royal decree.
58 Valiéndose de su fuerza, se ensañaban continuamente contra los israelitas sorprendidos en contravención en las diversas ciudades.	58 So they used their power against Israel, against those who were caught, each month, in the cities.
59 El veinticinco de cada mes, se ofrecían sacrificios en el ara que se alzaba sobre el altar de los holocaustos.	59 On the twenty-fifth day of each month they sacrificed on the altar erected over the altar of holocausts.
60 A las mujeres que habían circuncidado a sus hijos se las mataba, conforme al decreto,	60 Women who had had their children circumcised were put to death, in keeping with the decree,
61 con sus criaturas colgadas al cuello. La misma suerte corrían sus familiares y todos los que habían intervenido en la circuncisión.	61 with the babies hung from their necks; their families also and those who had circumcised them were killed.
62 Sin embargo, muchos israelitas se mantuvieron firmes y tuvieron el valor de no comer alimentos impuros;	62 But many in Israel were determined and resolved in their hearts not to eat anything unclean;
63 prefirieron la muerte antes que mancharse con esos alimentos y quebrantar la santa alianza, y por eso murieron.	63 they preferred to die rather than to be defiled with unclean food or to profane the holy covenant; and they did die. Terrible affliction was upon Israel.
64 Y una gran ira se descargó sobre Israel.
