1 Inmediatamente, Moisés y Aarón fueron a decir al Faraón: «Así habla el Señor, el Dios de Israel: Deja partir a mi pueblo, para que celebre en el desierto una fiesta en mi honor».	1 After these things, Moses and Aaron entered, and they said to Pharaoh: “Thus says the Lord God of Israel: Release my people, so that they may sacrifice to me in the desert.”
2 Pero el Faraón respondió: «¿Y quien es el Señor para que yo le obedezca dejando partir a Israel? Yo no conozco al Señor y no dejaré partir a Israel».	2 But he responded: “Who is the Lord, that I should listen to his voice and release Israel? I do not know the Lord, and I will not release Israel.”
3 Ellos dijeron: «El Dios de los hebreos vino a nuestro encuentro, y ahora tenemos que realizar una marcha de tres días por el desierto, para ofrecer sacrificios al Señor, nuestro Dios. De lo contrario él nos castigará con la peste o la espada».	3 And they said: “The God of the Hebrews has called us, so that we may go three days’ journey into the wilderness and sacrifice to the Lord our God. Otherwise, a pestilence or the sword may befall us.”
4 El rey de Egipto les respondió: «¿Por qué ustedes, Moisés y Aarón, se empeñan en apartar al pueblo de sus tareas? Vuelvan al trabajo que les ha sido impuesto».	4 The king of Egypt said to them: “Why do you, Moses and Aaron, distract the people from their works? Go back to your burdens.”
5 El pensaba así: «Ellos son ahora más numerosos que los nativos del país, ¿y todavía debo tolerarles que interrumpan sus trabajos?».	5 And Pharaoh said: “The people of the land are many. You see that the turmoil has increased: how much more if you give them rest from the works?”
6 Ese mismo día, el Faraón dio a los capataces y a los inspectores del pueblo las siguientes instrucciones:	6 Therefore, on the same day, he instructed the overseers of the works, and the taskmasters of the people, saying:
7 «No sigan entregando a esa gente la paja para hacer los ladrillos, como lo hicieron hasta ahora. Que vayan a juntarla ellos mismos.	7 “You shall no longer give chaff to the people to form bricks, as before. But they may go and gather straw.
8 Pero exíjanles la misma cantidad de ladrillos que fabricaban antes, sin descontarles ni uno solo, porque son unos holgazanes. Por eso gritan: «¡Déjanos ir a ofrecer sacrificios a nuestro Dios!»	8 And you shall impose upon them the same quota of bricks that they made before. Neither will you lessen anything, for they are idle, and therefore they cry out, saying: ‘We shall go and sacrifice to our God.’
9 Háganlos trabajar más duramente y que estén siempre ocupados; así no prestarán atención a esas patrañas».	9 They shall be oppressed with works, and these shall occupy them, so that they may not agree to lying words.”
10 En seguida salieron los capataces del pueblo, junto con los inspectores, y dijeron a la multitud: «Así habla el Faraón: «De ahora en adelante no les daré más paja.	10 And so the overseers of the works and the taskmasters went out and said to the people: “Thus says Pharaoh: I give you no chaff.
11 Vayan ustedes mismos y tráiganla de donde puedan. Pero el rendimiento no deberá disminuir en lo más mínimo».	11 Go, and collect it wherever you are able to find it. Neither will anything of your work be diminished.”
12 Entonces el pueblo se dispersó por todo el territorio de Egipto para recoger los rastrojos, y abastecerse así de paja.	12 And the people were dispersed through all the land of Egypt, in order to gather straw.
13 Los capataces, por su parte, los apremiaban diciendo: «Terminen el trabajo que se les fijó para cada día, como lo hacían cuando les daban la paja».	13 Likewise, the overseers of the works pressured them, saying: “Complete your work each day, just as you were accustomed to do before, when straw was given to you.”
14 Y los capataces del Faraón golpearon a los inspectores israelitas que ellos habían designado, diciendo: «¿Por qué ayer y hoy no completaron la cantidad establecida de ladrillos, como lo venían haciendo hasta ahora?».	14 And those who were first in the works of the sons of Israel were scourged by Pharaoh’s taskmasters, saying: “Why have you not filled the quota of bricks, neither yesterday, nor today, just as before?”
15 Los inspectores de los israelitas fueron a quejarse al Faraón, diciendo: «¿Por qué tratas así a tus servidores?	15 And the first among the sons of Israel came, and they cried out to Pharaoh, saying: “Why do act against your servants in this way?
16 No nos dan paja, no cesan de decirnos que hagamos ladrillos, y encima nos golpean. Y tú tienes la culpa».	16 Straw is not given to us, and yet the same amount of bricks is commanded. So we, your servants, are cut up by scourging, and injustice is done against your people.”
17 Pero el Faraón respondió: «Ustedes son unos holgazanes, sí, unos perfectos holgazanes. Por eso andan diciendo: «Déjanos ir a ofrecer sacrificios a nuestro Dios».	17 And he said: “You are idle. And for this reason you say, ‘We shall go and sacrifice to the Lord.’
18 Ahora vayan a trabajar. Y no sólo no les darán más paja, sino que deberán entregar la misma cantidad de ladrillos.»	18 Therefore, go and work. Straw will not be given to you, and you will return the customary number of bricks.”
19 Cuando les anunciaron que no debían disminuir la producción de ladrillos establecida para cada día, los inspectores israelitas se vieron en un grave aprieto.	19 And the first among the sons of Israel saw themselves in a crisis, because it was said to them, “Nothing at all will be lessened from the bricks throughout each day.”
20 Y al encontrarse con Moisés y Aarón que los estaban esperando a la salida,	20 And they met with Moses and Aaron, who stood opposite them as they departed from Pharaoh.
21 les dijeron: «Que el Señor fije su mirada en ustedes y juzgue. Porque nos han hecho odiosos al Faraón y a sus servidores, y han puesto en sus manos una espada para que nos maten».	21 And they said to them: “May the Lord see and judge, because you have caused our odor to become foul before Pharaoh and his servants, and you have provided him with a sword, in order to kill us.”
22 Moisés se volvió al Señor, diciendo: «Señor, ¿por qué maltratas a este pueblo? ¿Para esto me has enviado?	22 And Moses returned to the Lord, and he said: “Lord, why have you afflicted this people? Why have you sent me?
23 Desde que me presenté ante el Faraón para hablarle en tu nombre, él no ha cesado de maltratar a este pueblo, y tú no haces nada para librar a tu pueblo.	23 For from the time that I entered to Pharaoh, so as to speak in your name, he has afflicted your people. And you have not freed them.”
