1 El trece del duodécimo mes –que es el mes de Adar– día en que se debía ejecutar la orden del rey y su decreto, cuando los enemigos de los judíos esperaban dominarlos, se produjo un cambio de situación: de hecho, fueron los judíos los que se impusieron sobre sus enemigos.	1 So, on the third day, she put away her ornate apparel, and surrounded herself with glory.
2 Ellos se reunieron en sus respectivas ciudades, en todas las provincias del rey Asuero, para atacar a los que buscaban su ruina. Nadie les opuso resistencia, porque el temor a los judíos se había apoderado de todos los pueblos.	2 And when she was shining in a royal manner, and had called upon God, the Guide and Savior of all, she took two maids with her.
3 Todos los jefes de las provincias, los prefectos, los gobernadores y los funcionarios del rey les prestaron su apoyo, porque el temor a Mardoqueo se había apoderado de ellos,	3 And she was leaning upon one of them, as if, out of delicateness and great tenderness, she were not able to bear carrying her own body.
4 ya que este ocupaba un alto cargo en el palacio real y su fama se extendía por todas las provincias: Mardoqueo, en efecto, se engrandecía cada vez más.	4 And the other maid followed her lady, carrying her garment flowing on the ground.
5 Los judíos pasaron al filo de la espada a todos sus enemigos: fue una verdadera masacre, un exterminio. Trataron como quisieron a los que los odiaban,	5 Yet she had a rosy color pouring over her face, for, with gracious and bright eyes, she restrained a sorrowful soul and very great fear.
6 y en la ciudadela de Susa mataron y exterminaron a quinientos hombres,	6 And so, entering hesitantly through a series of doors, she stood opposite the king, where he sat upon his royal throne, clothed in royal robes, and shining with gold and precious stones. And he was terrible to behold.
7 dando muerte, especialmente, a Parsandata, Dalfón, Aspata,	7 And when he had lifted up his face, and with burning eyes had shown the fury of his heart, the queen collapsed, and her color turned pale, and she rested her exhausted head upon her handmaid.
8 Porata, Adalías, Aridata,	8 And God changed the king’s spirit into gentleness; quickly and apprehensively, he leapt from his throne, and lifting her up in his arms until she came to herself, he coaxed her with these words:
9 Parmasta, Arisai, Aridai y Vaisata,	9 “What is the matter, Esther? I am your brother, do not be afraid.
10 los diez hijos de Amán, hijo de Hamdatá, el opresor de los judíos. Los mataron, pero no recogieron ningún botín.	10 You will not die. For this law has not been established for you, but for all others.
11 Ese mismo día, llegó a conocimiento de rey el número de los que habían sido matados en la Ciudadela de Susa.	11 So approach and touch the scepter.”
12 El rey dijo entonces a la reina Ester: «En la ciudadela de Susa, los judíos mataron y exterminaron a quinientos hombres y a los diez hijos de Amán. ¡Qué no habrán hecho en el resto de las provincias reales! Pero ¿qué es lo que pides? Lo que sea, te será concedido. ¿Qué otra cosa deseas? Se hará lo que tú digas».	12 And since she remained silent, he took the golden scepter and placed it on her neck, and he kissed her and said, “Why do you not speak to me?”
13 Ester respondió: «Si al rey le parece bien, que a los judíos de Susa les sea permitido actual también mañana conforme al decreto válido para hoy, y que los hijos de Amán sean colgados del patíbulo».	13 She answered, “I saw you, my lord, as an angel of God, and my heart was disturbed for fear of your glory.
14 El rey ordenó que así se hiciera: en Susa se promulgó un decreto y los diez hijos de Amán fueron colgados.	14 For you, my lord, are great and wonderful, and your face is full of grace.”
15 Así, los judíos de Susa se reunieron una vez más el día catorce del mes de Adar y mataron allí a trescientos hombres, pero no recogieron ningún botín.	15 And while she was speaking, she collapsed again, because she was out of breath.
16 En cuanto a los demás judíos de las provincias reales, también se reunieron para defender sus vidas y así se libraron de los ataques de sus adversarios: ellos mataron a setenta y cinco mil entre sus enemigos, pero no recogieron ningún botín.	16 But the king was troubled, and all his servants consoled her.
17 Esto sucedió el día trece del mes de Adar; el catorce descansaron y celebraron ese día con banquetes y alegría.	17 (Alternate text from the Hebrew, verses 17-18:) And so, on the third day, Esther had put on her royal apparel and was standing in the atrium of the king’s house, which was inside, opposite the king’s hall, while he was sitting on his throne in the council room of the palace, opposite the entrance of the house.
18 Pero los judíos de Susa, que se habían concentrado el trece y el catorce, descansaron el día quince y lo festejaron con banquetes y alegría.	18 And when he saw Esther the queen standing there, she pleased his eyes, and he extended toward her the golden scepter, which he held in his hand, and she approached and kissed the top of his scepter.
19 Por eso los judíos de las zonas rurales celebran el día catorce del mes de Adar como un día de alegría, de banquetes y fiesta, y en él se envían regalos unos a otros.	19 And the king said to her, “What do you wish, queen Esther? What is your request? Even if you ask for half of the kingdom, it will be given to you.”
20 Mardoqueo consignó estas cosas por escrito y envió cartas a todos los judíos de todas las provincias del rey Asuero, tanto a los que estaban cerca como a los más alejados.	20 But she responded, “If it pleases the king, I beg you to come with me today, and Haman with you, to the feast that I have prepared.”
21 En ellas disponía que celebraran cada año el catorce y el quince del mes de Adar,	21 And immediately the king said, “Call Haman quickly, so that he may obey Esther’s will. And so the king and Haman came to the feast, which the queen had prepared for them.
22 por ser esos los días en que los judíos habían quedando libres de sus enemigos, y por ser ese el mes en que la aflicción se les había cambiado en alegría y el duelo en un día de fiesta. Por eso debían festejarlos como días de banquetes y alegría, enviarse regalos unos a otros y ofrecer donativos a los pobres.	22 And the king said to her, after he had drunk wine abundantly, “What are you asking for that should be given to you? And which things do you require? Even if you request half of my kingdom, you will obtain it.”
23 Los judíos hicieron una tradición de lo que habían comenzado a festejar y de lo que les había ordenado Mardoqueo.	23 Esther answered him, “My petition and prayer is this:
24 Porque Amán, hijo de Hamdatá, el agaguita, el opresor de todos los judíos, había proyectado eliminar a los judíos y había echado el «Pur» –es decir, la suerte– con el fin de confundirlos y eliminarlos.	24 If I have found favor in the sight of the king, and if it pleases the king to give me what I ask, and to fulfill my petition, let the king and Haman come to the feast which I have prepared for them, and tomorrow I will open my mind to the king.”
25 Pero, cuando se presentó ante el rey, este ordenó por escrito que recayera sobre la cabeza de Amán el plan perverso que había concebido contra los judíos, y lo colgaron del patíbulo, a él y a sus hijos.	25 And so Haman went out that day joyful and cheerful. And when he saw that Mordecai was sitting in front of the gate of the palace, and that he alone did not get up for him, but did not so much as move from the place where he sat, he was very indignant.
26 Por eso a aquellos días se los llamó «Purím» de la palabra «Pur». De acuerdo con el contenido de aquella carta, y por lo que habían visto y les había sucedido,	26 But, concealing his anger and returning into his house, he gathered to him his friends and Zeresh, his wife.
27 los judíos instituyeron para ellos mismos, para sus descendientes y para todos sus adeptos, la tradición irrevocable de celebrar anualmente esos dos días, según lo dispuesto en aquel escrito y en la fecha fijada.	27 And he explained to them the greatness of his riches, and the influence of his sons, and how, with such glory, the king had elevated him above all his rulers and servants.
28 Estos días son conmemorados y celebrados de generación en generación, en cada familia, en cada provincia y en cada ciudad. Y estos días de «Purím» nunca dejarán de ser festejados entre los judíos, ni se borrará su recuerdo entre sus descendientes.	28 And after this, he said, “Also, queen Esther has called no one else to the feast with the king, except me. And I will be dining with the king again tomorrow.
29 La reina Ester, hija de Abijáil, y Mardoqueo, el judío, escribieron urgiendo el cumplimiento de esta segunda carta relativa a los «Purím».	29 And though I have all these things, I consider that I have nothing as long as I see Mordecai the Jew sitting in front of the king’s gate.”
30 Se mandaron cartas a todos los judíos de las ciento veintisiete provincias del rey Asuero, con saludos y expresiones de lealtad,	30 And Zeresh his wife and his other friends answered him, “Order a great beam to be prepared, having a height of fifty cubits, and in the morning speak to the king, so that Mordecai may be hanged from it, and so you will go joyfully with the king to the feast.” This advice pleased him, and so he ordered a high cross to be prepared.
31 para instituir estos días de los «Purím», en las fechas fijadas, como lo habían ordenado Mardoqueo, el judío, y la reina Ester, y como lo habían establecido para sí mismos y para sus descendientes, con algunas cláusulas sobre ayunos y lamentaciones.
32 Así, la orden de Ester confirmó la institución de los «Purím», y esto quedó consignado por escrito.
