EL LIBRO DEL PUEBLO DE DIOS	CATHOLIC PUBLIC DOMAIN
1 Al día siguiente, Holofernes ordenó a todo su ejército y a toda la tropa de auxiliares que se habían unido a él, que emprendieran la marcha hacia Betulia, que ocuparan los desfiladeros de la montaña y atacaran a los israelitas.	1 But Holofernes, on another day, instructed his army to ascend against Bethulia.
2 Y aquel mismo día, todos sus guerreros levantaron el campamento. Su ejército se componía de ciento setenta mil soldados de infantería, y de doce mil jinetes, sin contar los encargados del equipaje, y los hombres de a pie que los acompañaban: era una inmensa multitud.	2 Moreover, there were one hundred and twenty thousand foot-soldiers, and twenty-two thousand horsemen, besides the contingents of those men who had been taken captive, and all the youths who had been abducted from the provinces and the cities.
3 Acamparon en el valle cercano a Betulia, junto a la fuente, y se desplegaron a lo ancho, desde Dotaim hasta Belbaim, y a lo largo, desde Betulia hasta Ciamón, que está frente a Esdrelón.	3 All these prepared themselves together to fight against the sons of Israel, and they came through the foothills of the mountain, even to the apex, which looks down upon Dothain, from the place which is called Belma, up to Chelmon, which is opposite Esdrelon.
4 Al ver aquella multitud, los israelitas quedaron despavoridos y se decían unos a otros: «Estos van a arrasar ahora toda la superficie de la tierra; ni las más altas montañas, ni los barrancos, ni las colinas podrán soportar su peso».	4 But the sons of Israel, when they saw the multitude of them, prostrated themselves upon the ground, scattering ashes over their heads, praying with one accord that the God of Israel would show his mercy upon his people.
5 Entonces cada uno empuñó sus armas de guerra y montaron guardia toda aquella noche, encendiendo fogatas sobre las torres.	5 And, taking up their arms of war, they set up positions at the places that lead along a narrow footpath between the mountains, and they guarded them all day and night.
6 Al segundo día, Holofernes exhibió toda su caballería delante de los israelitas que estaban en Betulia;	6 Now Holofernes, while circling around, discovered that the fountain that flowed in to them, led directly through an aqueduct on the south side, beyond the city. And he instructed their aqueduct to be cut off.
7 luego examinó los accesos de la ciudad; inspeccionó los manantiales y se apoderó de ellos, colocando allí puestos de guardia. Después volvió a reunirse con sus tropas.	7 Even so, there were springs not far from the walls, from which they were seen to draw water secretly, to refresh themselves a little rather than to drink their fill.
8 Vinieron entonces a su encuentro los príncipes de los hijos de Esaú, todos los jefes del pueblo de Moab y los oficiales del litoral, y le dijeron:	8 But the sons of Ammon and Moab approached Holofernes, saying: “The sons of Israel do not trust in their lances, nor in their arrows, but the mountains are their defense, and the steep hills and precipices constitute their fortifications.
9 «Si nuestro señor se digna escuchar un consejo, no habrá bajas en su ejército.	9 Therefore, so that you may be able to overcome them without joining battle, set guards at the springs so that they may not draw water from them, and you will put them to death without the sword, or at least, being weary, they will hand over their city, which they suppose to be, by its position in the mountains, unable to be conquered.”
10 Este pueblo de los israelitas no confía en sus lanzas, sino en las alturas de las montañas donde habitan, porque no es fácil escalar las cimas de sus montañas.	10 And these words were pleasing before Holofernes and before his attendants, and so he stationed a hundred men around every spring.
11 Por eso, señor, no entres en combate con ellos y no caerá ni uno solo de tu pueblo.	11 And when they had kept this watch through twenty full days, the cisterns and collections of waters failed among all the inhabitants of Bethulia, so that there was within the city not enough to satisfy them for even one day, because water was given out to the people daily by measure.
12 Quédate en tu campamento y reserva a todos los hombres de tu ejército; basta con que tus servidores se apoderen de la fuente que brota al pie de la montaña,	12 Then, all the men and women, youths and little ones, gathering together before Uzziah, all with one voice together,
13 porque de ella sacan el agua todos los habitantes de Betulia; así, devorador por la sed, tendrán que entregar la ciudad. Mientras tanto, nosotros y nuestra gente escalaremos las cimas de las montañas vecinas y acamparemos allí, para impedir que alguien salga de la ciudad.	13 said: “May God be judge between us and you, for you have done evil with us, in not being willing to speak peacefully with the Assyrians, and because of this, God has sold us into their hands.
14 El hambre los consumirá a ellos, a sus mujeres y a sus niños, y antes que los alcance la espada caerán tendidos en las calles de la ciudad.	14 And therefore, there is no one to help us, while we are prostrated before their eyes with thirst and great destruction.
15 Así les harás pagar bien caro su rebeldía y el haberse rehusado a salir pacíficamente a tu encuentro».	15 And now, gather together all who are in the city, so that we may willingly deliver everyone of us to the people of Holofernes.
16 La propuesta satisfizo a Holofernes y a todos sus oficiales, y él decidió proceder de esa manera.	16 For it is better that as captives, being alive, we should bless the Lord, than that we should die and become a disgrace to all flesh, after we have seen our wives and our children die before our eyes.
17 Un destacamento de amonitas partió acompañado de cinco mil asirios. Ellos acamparon en el valle, y se apoderaron de los depósitos de agua y de los manantiales de los israelitas.	17 We call to witness this day heaven and earth, and the God of our fathers, who takes vengeance upon us according to our sins, so that now you may deliver the city into the hand of the military of Holofernes. And may our end be brief, by the edge of the sword, that would be made longer by the dryness of thirst.”
18 Entre tanto, los edomitas y los amonitas subieron para acampar en la colina situada frente a Dotaim y enviaron a algunos de ellos hacia el sur y hacia el este, frente a Egrebel, que está cerca de Cus, a orillas del torrente Mocmur. El resto del ejército asirio tomó posiciones en la llanura, cubriendo toda la superficie de la región. Sus tiendas de campaña y sus equipajes formaban un inmenso campamento, porque era una enorme multitud.	18 And when they had said these things, there happened a great weeping and a loud lamentation within the assembly. From everyone and for many hours, with one voice, they cried out to God, saying:
19 Al verse rodeados por todos sus enemigos, los israelitas invocaron al Señor, su Dios, porque se sentían anonadados y sin posibilidad de romper el cerco.	19 “We have sinned like our fathers, we have acted unjustly, we have committed iniquity.
20 Todo el ejército asirio –los soldados, los carros de guerra y los jinetes– mantuvieron el cerco durante treinta y cuatro días. A todos los habitantes de Betulia se les agotaron las reservas de agua	20 May you have mercy on us, for you are pious, or with your own scourges avenge our iniquities, but do not be willing to deliver those trusting in you to a people who are ignorant of you,
21 y las cisternas comenzaron a secarse, de manera que nadie podía beber lo indispensable para cada día porque el agua se les distribuía racionada.	21 so that they may not say among the Gentiles, ‘Where is their God?’ ”
22 Los niños languidecían, y las mujeres y los jóvenes desfallecían de sed y caían exhaustos en las plazas de la ciudad y en los umbrales de las puertas.	22 And when, being weary from these outcries, and tired from these weepings, they became silent,
23 Todo el pueblo, los jóvenes, las mujeres y los niños se amotinaron contra Ozías y contra los jefes de la ciudad, y clamaban a gritos, diciendo a los ancianos:	23 Uzziah, rising up covered in tears, said: “Be steadfast in soul, brothers, and let us wait these five days for mercy from the Lord.
24 «Que Dios sea el juez entre nosotros y ustedes, por la gran injusticia que cometen contra nosotros al no entrar en negociaciones de paz con los asirios.	24 For perhaps he will break off his indignation and give glory to his own name.
25 Ya no hay nadie que pueda auxiliarnos, porque Dios nos ha puesto en manos de esa gente para que desfallezcamos de sed ante sus ojos y seamos totalmente destruidos.	25 But if, with five days passing, help does not arrive, we will accomplish the words that you have spoken.”
26 Llámenlos ahora mismo y entreguen la ciudad como botín a Holofernes y a todo su ejército,
27 porque es preferible que seamos sus prisioneros: así seremos esclavos, pero salvaremos nuestra vida y no tendremos que contemplar con nuestros propios ojos la muerte de nuestros pequeños, y no veremos a nuestras mujeres y a nuestros hijos exhalar el último suspiro.
28 Los conjuramos por el cielo y por la tierra, y también por nuestro Dios y Señor de nuestros padres, que nos castiga por nuestros pecados y por las transgresiones de nuestros antepasados; hagan hoy mismo lo que les decimos».
29 Y toda la asamblea prorrumpió en un amargo llanto, implorando a grandes voces al Señor Dios.
30 Pero Ozías les dijo: «Animo, hermanos, resistamos cinco días más. En el transcurso de ellos, el Señor, nuestro Dios, volverá a tener misericordia de nosotros, porque no nos abandonará hasta el fin.
31 Si transcurridos estos días, no nos llega ningún auxilio, entonces obraré como ustedes dicen».
32 Luego disolvió a la multitud para que cada uno regresara a su puesto: los hombres se dirigieron a los muros y a las torres de la ciudad, pero a las mujeres y a los niños los envió a sus casas. Mientras tanto, la ciudad quedó sumida en una profunda consternación.
