Esdras 10

EL LIBRO DEL PUEBLO DE DIOS	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Mientras Esdras, bañado en llanto y postrado delante de la Casa de Dios, oraba y hacía esta confesión, una gran cantidad de israelitas –hombres, mujeres y niños– se congregaron a su alrededor, derramando abundantes lágrimas.	1 While Ezra, weeping and prostrating himself in front of the Temple of God, was praying and makingconfession, a very large crowd of men, women and children of Israel gathered round him, the people weepingbitterly.
2 Entonces Secanías, hijo de Iejiel, de los hijos de Elam, dijo a Esdras: «Hemos traicionado a nuestro Dios, al casarnos con mujeres extranjeras de la gente del país. A pesar de esto, todavía queda una esperanza para Israel.	2 Then Shechaniah son of Jehiel, one of the sons of Elam, spoke up and said to Ezra, 'We have beenunfaithful to our God by marrying foreign women from the people of the country. But, in spite of this, there is stillsome hope for Israel.
3 Ahora hagamos una alianza con nuestro Dios, comprometiéndonos a echar a todas nuestras mujeres extranjeras y a los hijos nacidos de ellas, conforme a tu consejo y al de aquellos que respetan el mandamiento de nuestro Dios. ¡Qué se cumpla lo que ordena la Ley!	3 We will make a covenant with our God to send away all the foreign wives and their children inobedience to the advice of my lord and of those who tremble at the commandment of our God. Let us act inaccordance with the Law.
4 ¡Levántate, porque este asunto es de tu incumbencia, y nosotros estaremos contigo! ¡Anímate y manos a la obra!».	4 Go ahead, do your duty; we support you. Be brave, take action!'
5 Esdras se levantó e hizo jurar a los jefes de los sacerdotes y de los levitas, y a todo Israel, que procederían como él lo había dicho. Y todos lo juraron.	5 Then Ezra stood up and put the leading priests and Levites and all Israel on oath to do what had beensaid. They took the oath.
6 Esdras se alejó de la Casa de Dios y se dirigió a la habitación de Iojanán, hijo de Eliasib, donde pasó la noche sin comer ni beber, porque estaba afligido a causa de la traición de los repatriados.	6 Ezra then left his place in front of the Temple of God and went to the room of Jehohanan son ofEliashib, where he spent the night without eating food or drinking water, because he was stil mourning over theexiles' infidelity.
7 Se lanzó entonces una proclama en Judá y en Jerusalén, para que todos los repatriados se reunieran en Jerusalén.	7 A proclamation was issued throughout Judah and Jerusalem that al the exiles were to assemble inJerusalem,
8 Al que no se presentara en el plazo de tres días, por decisión de los jefes y de los ancianos, se le confiscarían todos sus bienes y se lo excluiría de la asamblea de los que habían vuelto al exilio.	8 and that anyone who failed within three days to answer the summons of the officials and elders was toforfeit al his possessions and himself be excluded from the community of the exiles.
9 Todos los hombres de Judá y de Benjamín se reunieron en Jerusalén dentro de los tres días. Era el día veinte del noveno mes. Todo el pueblo se ubicó en la plaza de la Casa de Dios, lleno de temor por este asunto y también porque llovía a cántaros.	9 As a result, all the men of Judah and Benjamin assembled in Jerusalem within the three days; it wasthe twentieth day of the ninth month. Al the people sat down in the square in front of the Temple of God,trembling because of the matter in hand and because of the heavy rain.
10 El sacerdote Esdras se levantó y les dijo: «Ustedes cometieron una traición, al casarse con mujeres extranjeras: así aumentaron la culpa de Israel.	10 The priest Ezra then stood up and said to them, 'You have been unfaithful and have married foreignwives, thus adding to Israel's guilt.
11 Pero ahora, den gracias al Señor, el Dios de nuestros padres, y cumplan su voluntad, separándose de la gente del país y de las mujeres extranjeras».	11 So now give thanks to Yahweh, God of your ancestors, and do his will by holding aloof from thepeople of the country and from foreign wives.'
12 Toda la asamblea respondió en alta voz: «Sí, haremos lo que tú nos digas,	12 In ringing tones, the whole assembly answered, 'Yes, our duty is to do as you say.
13 pero el pueblo es muy numeroso y estamos en época de lluvias. No podemos permanecer a la intemperie, y además, esto no es cuestión de un día o dos, porque somos muchos los que hemos pecado en esto.	13 But there are many people here and it is the rainy season; we cannot stay out in the open; besides,this is not something that can be dealt with in one or two days, since many of us have been unfaithful over this.
14 Sería mejor que nuestros jefes representen a toda la asamblea: todos los que, dentro de nuestras ciudades, se hayan casado con mujeres extranjeras, vendrán a presentarse en la fecha señalada, acompañados de los ancianos y de los jueces de cada ciudad, hasta que se haya alejado de nosotros la ira de nuestro Dios a causa de este asunto».	14 Let our officials deputise for the whole community, and all the people in our towns who have marriedforeign wives can come at stated times, accompanied by elders and judges from each town, until our God'sfierce anger over this is turned away from us.'
15 Solamente Jonatán, hijo de Azael, y Iajzías, hijo de Tigvá, se opusieron a esta manera de proceder, apoyados por Mesulán y el levita Sabtai.	15 Only Jonathan son of Asahel and Jahzeiah son of Tikvah, supported by Meshul am and Shabbethaithe Levite, were opposed to this.
16 Pero los repatriados hicieron como se había propuesto. El sacerdote Esdras eligió un jefe de familia por cada grupo, designándolos personalmente a cada uno. El primer día del décimo mes, comenzaron las sesiones para examinar las causas;	16 The exiles did as had been proposed. And the priest Ezra selected the family heads of the variousfamilies, all of them by name, who began their sittings on the first day of the tenth month to look into the matter.
17 y hasta el primer día del primer mes, no quedaron resueltos los casos de todos los hombres que se habían casado con mujeres extranjeras.	17 And by the first day of the first month they had dealt with al the men who had married foreign women.
18 Entre los miembros de las familias sacerdotales que se habían casado con mujeres extranjeras, estaban los siguientes: entre los hijos de Josué, hijo de Josadac, y entre sus hermanos: Maasías, Eliezer, Iarib y Guedalías.	18 Among the priests who were found to have married foreign wives were: of the sons of Jeshua son ofJozadak and his brothers: Maaseiah, Eliezer, Jarib and Gedaliah,
19 Estos se comprometieron bajo juramento a echar a sus mujeres, y ofrecieron un carnero en sacrificio de reparación por su culpa.	19 who agreed to send their wives away; their guilt offering was a ram from the flock for their guilt;
20 Entre los hijos de Imer: Janahí y Zebadías;	20 of the sons of Immer: Hanani and Zebadiah;
21 entre los hijos de Jarím: Maasías, Elías, Semaías, Iejiel y Uzías;	21 of the sons of Harim: Maaseiah, Elijah, Shemaiah, Jehiel and Uzziah;
22 entre los hijos de Pasjur: Elionai, Maasías, Ismael, Natanael, Iosabad y Elasá.	22 of the sons of Pashhur: Elioenai, Maaseiah, Ishmael, Nethanel, Jozabad and Elasah;
23 Entre los levitas: Iosabad, Simei, Quelaías –o Quelitá– Petaías, Iejudá y Eliezer.	23 of the Levites: Jozabad, Shimei, Kelaiah -- that is, Kelita-Pethahiah, Judah, and Eliezer;
24 Entre los cantores: Eliasib y Zacur. Entre los porteros: Salúm, Telém y Urí.	24 of the singers: Eliashib and Zaccur; of the gatekeepers: Shal um, Telem and Uri;
25 Entre los israelitas: de los hijos de Parós: Ramías, Izías, Malquías, Miamím, Eleazar, Malquías y Benaías;	25 and of the Israelites: of the sons of Parosh: Ramiah, Izziah, Malchijah, Mijamin, Eleazar, Malchijahand Benaiah;
26 de los hijos de Elam: Matanías, Zacarías, Iejiel, Abdí, Ieremot y Elías;	26 of the sons of Elam: Mattaniah, Zechariah, Jehiel, Abdi, Jeremoth and Elijah;
27 de los hijos de Zatú: Elionai, Eliasib, Matanías, Ieremot, Zabad y Azizá;	27 of the sons of Zattu: Elioenai, Eliashib, Mattaniah, Jeremoth, Zabad and Aziza;
28 de los hijos de Bebai: Iojanán, Jananías, Zabai y Atlai;	28 of the sons of Bebai: Jehohanan, Hananiah, Zabbai, Atlai;
29 de los hijos de Baní: Mesulán, Maluc, Adaías, Iasub, Seal y Ieramot;	29 of the sons of Bigvai: Meshullam, Mal uch, Jedaiah, Jashub, Sheal, Jeremoth;
30 de los hijos de Pajat Moab: Adná, Quelal, Benaías, Maasías, Matanías, Besalel, Binuí y Manasés;	30 of the sons of Pahath-Moab: Adna, Chelal, Benaiah, Maaseiah, Mattaniah, Bezalel, Binnui andManasseh;
31 de los hijos de Jarím: Eliezer, Isías, Malquías, Semaías, Simeón,	31 of the sons of Harim: Eliezer, Isshijah, Malchijah, Shemaiah, Shimeon,
32 Benjamín, Maluc y Semarías;	32 Benjamin, Mal uch, Shemariah;
33 de los hijos de Jasúm: Matenai, Matatá, Zabad, Elifélet, Ieremai, Manasés y Simei;	33 of the sons of Hashum: Mattenai, Mattattah, Zabad, Eliphelet, Jeremai, Manasseh, Shimei;
34 de los hijos de Baní: Maadai, Amram, Uel,	34 of the sons of Bani: Maadai, Amram, Uel,
35 Benaías, Bedías, Quelui,	35 Benaiah, Bediah, Jeluhi,
36 Vanías, Meremot, Eliasib,	36 Vaniah, Meremoth, Eliashib,
37 Matanías, Matenai y Iasai;	37 Mattaniah, Mattenai and Jaasau;
38 de los hijos de Binuí: Simei,	38 of the sons of Binnui: Shimei,
39 Selemías, Natán y Adaías;	39 Shelemiah, Nathan and Adaiah;
40 de los hijos de Sacai: Sasai, Sarai,	40 of the sons of Zaccai: Shashai, Sharai,
41 Azarel, Selemías, Semarías,	41 Azarel, Shelemiah, Shemariah,
42 Salúm, Amarías y José;	42 Shallum, Amariah, Joseph;
43 de los hijos de Nebo: Jeiel, Matitías, Zabad, Zebiná, Iadai, Joel y Benaías.	43 of the sons of Nebo: Jeiel, Mattithiah, Zabad, Zebina, Jaddai, Joel, Benaiah.
44 Todos estos se habían casado con extranjeras, y despidieron a sus mujeres y a sus hijos.	44 All these had married foreign wives but sent them away with their children.
