EL LIBRO DEL PUEBLO DE DIOS	DOUAI-RHEIMS
1 Roboam se dirigió a Siquem, porque allí había ido todo Israel para proclamarlo rey.	1 And Roboam went to Sichem: for thither all Israel were assembled, to make him king.
2 Cuando se enteró Jeroboam, hijo de Nebat –que estaba todavía en Egipto, adonde había huido del rey Salomón– se volvió de Egipto.	2 And when Jeroboam the son of Nabat, who was in Egypt, (for he was fled thither from Solomon,) heard it, forthwith he returned.
3 Lo mandaron llamar, y él se presentó con toda la asamblea de Israel. Entonces hablaron así a Roboam:	3 And they sent for him, and he came with all Israel, and they spoke to Roboam, saying:
4 «Tu padre hizo muy penoso nuestro yugo. Alivia tú ahora la dura servidumbre y el penoso yugo que nos impuso tu padre, y te serviremos».	4 Thy father oppressed us with a most grievous yoke, do thou govern us with a lighter hand than thy father, who laid upon us a heavy servitude, and ease some thing of the burden, that we may serve thee.
5 El les replicó: «Vuelvan a verme dentro de tres días». Y el pueblo se retiró.	5 And he said to them: Come to me again after three days. And when the people were gone,
6 El rey Roboam fue a consultar a los ancianos que habían asistido a su padre Salomón, cuando este aún vivía, y les preguntó: «¿Qué respuesta me aconsejan dar a este pueblo?».	6 He took counsel with the ancients, who had stood before his father Solomon, while he yet lived, saying: What counsel give you to me, that I may answer the people?
7 Ellos le hablaron así: «Si te comportas bien con este pueblo, si eres condescendiente con ellos y les respondes con buenas palabras, serán siempre tus servidores».	7 And they said to him: If thou please this people, and soothe them with kind words, they will be thy servants for ever.
8 Pero él desechó el consejo que le habían dado los ancianos, y fue a consultar a los jóvenes que se habían criado con él y lo servían como asistentes.	8 But he forsook the counsel of the ancients, end began to treat with the young men, that had been brought up with him, and were in his train.
9 Les preguntó: «Y ustedes, ¿qué aconsejan? ¿Qué debemos responder a este pueblo que me ha dicho: «Alivia el yugo que nos impuso tu padre»?».	9 And he said to them: What seemeth good to you? or what shall I answer this people, who have said to me: Ease the yoke which thy father laid upon us?
10 Los jóvenes que se habían criado con él le dijeron: «Al pueblo que te ha dicho: «Tu padre nos impuso un yugo pesado, pero tú alívianos la carga», diles esto: «¡Mi dedo meñique es más grueso que la cintura de mi padre!	10 But they answered as young men, and brought up with him in pleasures, and said: Thus shalt thou speak to the people, that said to thee: Thy father made our yoke heavy, do thou ease it: thus shalt thou answer them: My little finger is thicker than the loins of my father.
11 Si mi padre los cargó con un yugo pesado, yo lo haré más pesado aún; si él los castigó con látigos, yo usaré lonjas con puntas de hierro».	11 My father laid upon you a heavy yoke, and I will add more weight to it: my father beat you with scourges, but I will beat you with scorpions.
12 Al tercer día, Jeroboam y todo el pueblo comparecieron ante Roboam, según lo que había indicado el rey cuando dijo: «Vuelvan a verme al tercer día».	12 So Jeroboam, and all the people came to Roboam the third day, as he commanded them.
13 Pero el rey Roboam les respondió duramente; desechó el consejo de los ancianos	13 And the king answered roughly, leaving the counsel of the ancients.
14 y, siguiendo el consejo de los jóvenes, les habló así: «Mi padre les impuso un yugo pesado, y yo lo haré más pesado aún; si él los castigó con látigos, yo usaré lonjas con puntas de hierro».	14 And he spoke according to the advice of the young men : My father laid upon you a heavy yoke, which I will make heavier: my father beat you with scourges, but I will beat you with scorpions.
15 Así el rey no escuchó al pueblo, porque este era el medio de que se valía Dios para cumplir la palabra que él había dicho a Jeroboam, hijo de Nebat, por boca de Ajías de Silo.	15 And he condescended not to the people's requests: for it was the will of God, that his word might be fulfilled which he had spoken by the hand of Ahias the Silonite to Jeroboam the son of Nabat.
16 Y cuando todo Israel vio que el rey no los había escuchado, el pueblo respondió: «¿Qué parte tenemos nosotros con David? ¡No tenemos herencia común con el hijo de Jesé! ¡A tus carpas, Israel! ¡Ahora, ocúpate de tu casa, David!». Todo Israel se fue a sus campamentos,	16 And all the people upon the king's speaking roughly, said thus unto him: We have no part in David, nor inheritance in the son of Isai. Return to thy dwellings, O Israel, and do thou, O David, feed thy own house. And Israel went away to their dwellings.
17 pero Roboam siguió reinando sobre los israelitas que habitaban en las ciudades de Judá.	17 But Roboam reigned over the children of Israel that dwelt in the cities of Juda.
18 El rey Roboam envió a Adoram, el encargo del reclutamiento, pero los israelitas lo mataron a pedradas. Y el mismo rey Roboam tuvo que subir precipitadamente a su carro para huir a Jerusalén.	18 And king Roboam sent Aduram, who was over the tributes, and the children of Israel stoned him, and he died: and king Roboam made haste to gee up into his chariot, and fled into Jerusalem.
19 Fue así como Israel se rebeló contra la casa de David hasta el día de hoy.	19 And Israel revolted from the house of David unto this day.
