1 Después de esto, murió el rey de los amonitas, y su hijo Janún reinó en lugar de él.	1 And it came to pass after this, that the king of the children of Ammon died, and Hanon his son reigned in his stead.
2 David dijo: «Voy a retribuirle a Janún, hijo de Najás, las pruebas de lealtad que me ha dado su padre». Y por intermedio de sus servidores, le envió las condolencias por la muerte de su padre. Pero cuando los servidores de David llegaron al país de los amonitas,	2 And David said: I Will shew kindness to Hanon the son of Daas, as his father shewed kindness to me. So David sent his servants to comfort him for the death of his father. But when the servants of David were come into the land of the children of Ammon,
3 los jefes amonitas dijeron a Janún, su señor: «¿Crees que David te hace llegar sus condolencias para honrar a tu padre? ¿No será que ha enviado a sus servidores como espías, para explorar la ciudad y sembrar la agitación?».	3 The princes of the children of Ammon said to Hanon their lord: Thinkest thou that for the honour of thy father, David hath sent comforters to thee, and hath not David rather sent his servants to thee to search, and spy into the city, and overthrow it?
4 Entonces Janún hizo detener a los servidores de David, les afeitó la mitad de la barba, les cortó la ropa a la altura de las nalgas y los despidió.	4 Wherefore Hanon took the servants of David, and shaved off the one half of their beards, and cut away half of their garments even to the buttocks, and sent them away.
5 Apenas lo pusieron al tanto de lo sucedido, David ordenó que fueran a recibir a aquellos hombres, porque estaban muy avergonzados. Y el rey les mandó decir: «Quédense en Jericó hasta que les crezca la barba, y después vengan».	5 When this was told David, he sent to meet them: for the men were sadly put to confusion, and David commanded them, saying: Stay at Jericho, till your beards be grown, and then return.
6 Cuando los amonitas advirtieron que se habían atraído el odio de David, mandaron a contratar veinte mil soldados de los arameos de Bet Rejob y de los arameos de Sobá, al rey de Maacá con mil hombres, y a veinte mil hombres de la gente de Tob.	6 And the children of Ammon seeing that they had done an injury to David, Bent and hired the Syrians of Rohob, and the Syrians of Soba, twenty thousand footmen, and of the king of Maacha a thousand men, and of Istob twelve thousand men.
7 David, al enterarse, envió a Joab con todo el ejército y con sus guerreros.	7 And when David heard this, he sent Joab and the whole army of warriors.
8 Los amonitas salieron y formaron en orden de batalla a la entrada de la Puerta, pero los arameos de Sobá y de Rejob, y la gente de Tob y de Maacá se mantuvieron aparte, en campo abierto.	8 And the children of Ammon came out, and set their men in array at the entering in of the gate: but the Syrians of Soba, and of Rohob, and of Istob, and of Maacha were by themselves in the field.
9 Cuando Joab vio que había dos frentes de batalla, uno delante de él y otro detrás, seleccionó a lo más escogido de Israel y los alineó frente a los arameos,	9 Then Joab seeing that the battle was prepared against him, both before and behind, chose of all the choice men of Israel, and put them in array against the Syrians:
10 dejando el resto de la tropa a las órdenes de su hermano Abisai. Luego les hizo tomar posiciones frente a los amonitas,	10 And the rest of the people he delivered to Abisai his brother, who set them in array against the children of Ammon.
11 y dijo: «Si los arameos son más fuertes que yo, tú vendrás en mi ayuda; y si los amonitas son más fuertes que tú, yo iré a auxiliarte.	11 And Joab said: If the Syrians are too strong for me, then thou shalt help me: but if the children of Ammon are too strong for thee, then I will help thee.
12 ¡Animo! ¡Luchemos valerosamente por nuestro pueblo y por las ciudades de nuestro Dios! ¡Y que el Señor haga lo que te parezca bien!».	12 Be of good courage, and let us fight for our people, and for the city of our God: and the Lord will do what is good in his sight.
13 Entonces Joab avanzó con sus tropas para enfrentarse con Aram, y estos huyeron delante de él.	13 And Joab and the people that were with him, began to fight against the Syrians: and they immediately fled before him.
14 Cuando los amonitas vieron que los arameos habían huido, también ellos huyeron delante de Abisai y entraron en la ciudad. Joab, por su parte, suspendió su campaña contra los amonitas y volvió a Jerusalén.	14 And the children of Ammon seeing that the Syrians were fled, they fled also before Abisai, and entered into the city: and Joab returned from the children of Ammon, and came to Jerusalem.
15 Los arameos, al ver que habían sido vencidos, concentraron sus tropas,	15 Then the Syrians seeing that they had fallen before Israel, gathered themselves together.
16 y Hadadézer envió mensajeros para movilizar a los arameos del otro lado del Río. Estos llegaron a Helam a las órdenes de Sobac, el jefe del ejército de Hadadézer.	16 And Adarezer sent and fetched the Syrians, that were beyond the river, and brought over their army: and Sobach, the captain of the host of Adarezer, was their general.
17 Cuando informaron de esto a David, él concentró a todo Israel, cruzó el Jordán y llegó a Helam. Los arameos tomaron posiciones frente a David y le libraron batalla.	17 And when this was told David, he gathered all Israel together, and passed over the Jordan, and came to Helam: and the Syrians set themselves in array against David, and fought against him.
18 Pero tuvieron que huir delante de Israel, y David les mató a los arameos setecientos caballos y cuarenta mil hombres de caballería. También hirió a Sobac, el jefe del ejército, el cual murió allí mismo.	18 And the Syrians fled before Israel, and David slew of the Syrians the men of seven hundred chariots, and forty thousand horsemen: and smote Sobach the captain of the army, who presently died.
19 Cuando todos los reyes que estaban a las órdenes de Hadadézer vieron que habían caído derrotados ante Israel, hicieron las paces con los israelitas y les quedaron sometidos. En adelante, los arameos no quisieron prestar más ayuda a los amonitas.	19 And all the kings that were auxiliaries of Adarezer, seeing themselves overcome by Israel, were afraid and fled away, eight and fifty thousand men before Israel. And they made peace with Israel: and served them, and all the Syrians were afraid to help the children of Ammon any more.
