1 Se encendió otra vez la ira de Yahveh contra los israelitas e incitó a David contra ellos diciendo: «Anda, haz el censo de Israel y de Judá».	1 The LORD'S anger against Israel flared again, and he incited David against the Israelites by prompting him to number Israel and Judah.
2 El rey dijo a Joab y a los jefes del ejército que estaban con él: «Recorre todas las tribus de Israel desde Dan hasta Berseba y haz el censo para que yo sepa la cifra de la población».	2 Accordingly the king said to Joab and the leaders of the army who were with him, "Tour all the tribes in Israel from Dan to Beer-sheba and register the people, that I may know their number."
3 Joab respondió al rey: «Que Yahveh tu Dios multiplique el pueblo cien veces más de lo que es y que los ojos de mi señor el rey lo vean. Mas ¿para qué quiere esto mi señor el rey?»	3 But Joab said to the king: "May the LORD your God increase the number of people a hundredfold for your royal majesty to see it with his own eyes. But why does it please my lord the king to order a thing of this kind?"
4 Pero prevaleció la orden del rey sobre Joab y los jefes del ejército y salió Joab con los jefes del ejército de la presencia del rey para hacer el censo del pueblo de Israel.	4 The king, however, overruled Joab and the leaders of the army, so they left the king's presence in order to register the people of Israel.
5 Pasaron el Jordán y comenzaron por Aroer, la ciudad que está en medio del valle, y por Gad hasta Yazer.	5 Crossing the Jordan, they began near Aroer, south of the city in the wadi, and went in the direction of Gad toward Jazer.
6 Fueron luego a Galaad y al país de los hititas, a Cadés. Llegaron hasta Dan y desde Dan doblaron hacia Sidón.	6 They continued on to Gilead and to the district below Mount Hermon. Then they proceeded to Dan; from there they turned toward Sidon,
7 Llegaron hasta la fortaleza de Tiro y todas las ciudades de los jivitas y cananeos, saliendo finlamente al Négueb de Judá, a Berseba.	7 going to the fortress of Tyre and to all the cities of the Hivites and Canaanites, and ending up at Beer-sheba in the Negeb of Judah.
8 Recorrieron así todo el país y al cabo de nueve meses y veinte días volvieron a Jerusalén.	8 Thus they toured the whole country, reaching Jerusalem again after nine months and twenty days.
9 Joab entregó al rey la cifra del censo del pueblo. Había en Israel 800.000 hombres de guerra capaces de manejar las armas; en Judá había 500.000 hombres.	9 Joab then reported to the king the number of people registered: in Israel, eight hundred thousand men fit for military service; in Judah, five hundred thousand.
10 Después de haber hecho el censo del pueblo, le remordió a David el corazón y dijo David a Yahveh: «He cometido un gran pecado. Pero ahora, Yahveh, perdona, te ruego, la falta de tu siervo, pues he sido muy necio».	10 Afterward, however, David regretted having numbered the people, and said to the LORD: "I have sinned grievously in what I have done. But now, LORD, forgive the guilt of your servant, for I have been very foolish."
11 Cuando David se levantó por la mañana, le había sido dirigida la palabra de Yahveh al profeta Gad, vidente de David, diciendo:	11 When David rose in the morning, the LORD had spoken to the prophet Gad, David's seer, saying:
12 «Anda y di a David: Así dice Yahveh: Tres cosas te propongo; elije una de ellas y la llevaré a cabo».	12 "Go and say to David, 'This is what the LORD says: I offer you three alternatives; choose one of them, and I will inflict it on you.'"
13 Llegó Gad donde David y le anunció: «¿Qué quieres que te venga, tres años de gran hambre en tu país, tres meses de derrotas ante tus enemigos y que te persigan, o tres días de peste en tu tierra? Ahora piensa y mira qué debo responder al que me envía».	13 Gad then went to David to inform him. He asked: "Do you want a three years' famine to come upon your land, or to flee from your enemy three months while he pursues you, or to have a three days' pestilence in your land? Now consider and decide what I must reply to him who sent me."
14 David respondió a Gad: «Estoy en grande angustia. Pero caigamos en manos de Yahveh que es grande su misericordia. No caiga yo en manos de los hombres».	14 David answered Gad: "I am in very serious difficulty. Let us fall by the hand of God, for he is most merciful; but let me not fall by the hand of man."
15 Y David eligió la peste para sí. Eran los días de la recolección del trigo. Yahveh envió la peste a Israel desde la mañana hasta el tiempo señalado y murieron 70.000 hombres del pueblo, desde Dan hasta Berseba.	15 Thus David chose the pestilence. Now it was the time of the wheat harvest when the plague broke out among the people. (The LORD then sent a pestilence over Israel from morning until the time appointed, and seventy thousand of the people from Dan to Beer-sheba died.)
16 El ángel extendió la mano hacia Jerusalén para destruirla, pero Yahveh se arrepintió del estrago y dijo al ángel que exterminaba el pueblo: «¡Basta ya! Retira tu mano». El ángel de Yahveh estaba entonces junto a la era de Arauná el jebuseo.	16 But when the angel stretched forth his hand toward Jerusalem to destroy it, the LORD regretted the calamity and said to the angel causing the destruction among the people, "Enough now! Stay your hand." The angel of the LORD was then standing at the threshing floor of Araunah the Jebusite.
17 Cuando David vio al ángel que hería al pueblo, dijo a Yahveh: «Yo fui quien pequé, yo cometí el mal, pero estas ovejas ¿qué han hecho? Caiga, te suplico, tu mano sobre mí y sobre la casa de mi padre».	17 When David saw the angel who was striking the people, he said to the LORD: "It is I who have sinned; it is I, the shepherd, who have done wrong. But these are sheep; what have they done? Punish me and my kindred."
18 Vino Gad aquel día donde David y le dijo: «Sube y levanta un altar a Yahveh en la era de Arauná el jebuseo».	18 On the same day Gad went to David and said to him, "Go up and build an altar to the LORD on the threshing floor of Araunah the Jebusite."
19 David subió, según la palabra de Gad, como había ordenado Yahveh.	19 Following Gad's bidding, David went up as the LORD had commanded.
20 Miró Arauná y vio al rey y a sus servidores que venían hacia él. Entonces Arauná salió y se postró rostro en tierra ante el rey.	20 Now Araunah looked down and noticed the king and his servants coming toward him while he was threshing wheat. So he went out and paid homage to the king, with face to the ground.
21 Y dijo Arauná: «¿Cómo mi señor el rey viene a su siervo?» David respondió: «Vengo a comprarte la era para levantar un altar a Yahveh y detener la plaga del pueblo».	21 Then Araunah asked, "Why does my lord the king come to his servant?" David replied, "To buy the threshing floor from you, to build an altar to the LORD, that the plague may be checked among the people."
22 Arauná dijo a David: «Que el rey mi señor tome y ofrezca lo que bien le parezca. Mira los bueyes para el holocausto, los trillos y los yugos de los bueyes para leña.	22 But Araunah said to David: "Let my lord the king take and offer up whatever he may wish. Here are oxen for holocausts, and threshing sledges and the yokes of the oxen for wood.
23 El siervo de mi señor el rey da todo esto al rey». Y Arauná dijo al rey: «Que Yahveh tu Dios te sea propicio».	23 All this does Araunah give to the king." Araunah then said to the king, "May the LORD your God accept your offering."
24 Pero el rey dijo a Arauná: «No; quiero comprártelo por su precio, no quiero ofrecer a Yahveh mi Dios holocaustos de balde». Y David compró la era y los bueyes por cincuenta siclos de plata.	24 The king, however, replied to Araunah, "No, I must pay you for it, for I cannot offer to the LORD my God holocausts that cost nothing." So David bought the threshing floor and the oxen for fifty silver shekels.
25 Levantó allí David un altar a Yahveh y ofreció holocaustos y sacrificios de comunión. Entonces Yahveh atendió a las súplicas en favor de la tierra y la peste se apartó de Israel.	25 Then David built an altar there to the LORD, and offered holocausts and peace offerings. The LORD granted relief to the country, and the plague was checked in Israel.
