1 Samuel dit à tout Israël: “Je vous ai écoutés, j’ai fait tout ce que vous m’avez demandé et je vous ai donné un roi.	1 And Samuel said to all Israel: Behold I have hearkened to your voice in all that you said to me, and have made a king over you.
2 Que le roi, maintenant, prenne la direction de vos affaires, car je suis vieux, j’ai blanchi, et ce sont mes fils aujourd’hui qui sont avec vous. “Depuis ma jeunesse et jusqu’à ce jour j’ai marché à votre tête;	2 And now the king goeth before you: but I am old and greyheaded: and my sons are with you: having then conversed with you from my youth unto this day, behold here I am.
3 alors, dites et soyez témoins devant Yahvé et devant celui qu’il a choisi: ai-je pris le bœuf ou l’âne de l’un d’entre vous? Ai-je volé ou maltraité quelqu’un? Ai-je accepté un cadeau pour fermer les yeux sur la conduite de l’un d’entre vous? Je suis prêt à le rendre.”	3 Speak of me before the Lord, and before his anointed, whether I have taken any man's ox, or ass: If I have wronged any man, if I have oppressed any man, if I have taken a bribe at any man's hand: and I will despise it this day, and will restore it to you.
4 Tous répondirent: “Tu ne nous as jamais maltraités, tu n’as volé aucun d’entre nous et tu n’as accepté de cadeau de la main de personne.”	4 And they said: Thou hast not wronged us, nor oppressed us, nor taken ought at any man's hand.
5 Samuel leur dit: “Donc Yahvé est témoin, et celui qu’il vient de choisir en est aujourd’hui le témoin: vous n’avez rien à me reprocher.” Ils lui répondirent: “Ils sont témoins.”	5 And he said to them: The Lord is witness against you, and his anointed is witness this day, that you have not found any thing in my hand. And they said: He is witness.
6 Alors Samuel dit au peuple: “Que Yahvé soit donc témoin, lui qui vous a donné Moïse et Aaron et qui a fait sortir vos pères du pays d’Égypte.	6 And Samuel said to the people: It is the Lord, who made Moses and Aaron, and brought our fathers out of the land of Egypt.
7 Venez donc avec moi aujourd’hui au tribunal de Yahvé: je veux vous rappeler tous les bienfaits de Yahvé pour vous et pour vos pères.	7 Now therefore stand up, that I may plead in judgment against you before the Lord, concerning all the kindness of the Lord, which he hath shewn to you, and to your fathers:
8 Lorsque Jacob arriva en Égypte, les Égyptiens les opprimèrent et vos pères crièrent vers Yahvé. Alors il envoya Moïse et Aaron pour faire sortir vos pères d’Égypte et les installer en ce lieu.	8 How Jacob went into Egypt, and your fathers cried to the Lord: and the Lord sent Moses and Aaron, and brought your fathers out of Egypt: and made them dwell in this place.
9 Après cela ils oublièrent Yahvé leur Dieu et il les livra entre les mains de Siséra, le général de l’armée de Haçor, entre les mains des Philistins et du roi de Moab qui leur firent la guerre.	9 And they forgot the Lord their God, and he delivered them into the hands of Sisara, captain of the army of Hasor, and into the hands of the Philistines, and into the hand of the king of Moab, and they fought against them.
10 Alors ils crièrent vers Yahvé: Nous avons péché et nous avons abandonné Yahvé. Nous avons servi les Baals et les Astartés, maintenant délivre-nous de la main de nos ennemis et nous te servirons.	10 But afterwards they cried to the Lord, and said: We have sinned, because we have forsaken the Lord, and have served Baalim and Astaroth: but now deliver us from the hand of our enemies, and we will serve thee.
11 Yahvé vous a alors donné Yéroubbaal, Barac, Jephté et Samuel, il vous a délivrés de vos ennemis et vous a redonné la paix.	11 And the Lord sent Jerobaal, and Badan, and Jephte, and Samuel, and delivered you from the hand of your enemies round about, and you dwelt securely.
12 Cependant, lorsque vous avez vu Nahach, roi des Ammonites, se mettre en campagne contre vous, vous m’avez dit: Non! Il nous faut un roi qui règne sur nous. Yahvé pourtant, votre Dieu, régnait sur vous.	12 But seeing that Naas king of the children of Ammon was come against you, you said to me: Nay, but a king shall reign over us: whereas the Lord your God was your king.
13 “Mais maintenant Yahvé vous a donné le roi que vous-mêmes avez choisi.	13 Now therefore your king is here, whom you have chosen and desired: Behold the Lord hath given you a king.
14 Si vous craignez Yahvé et que vous le servez, si vous lui obéissez sans vous révolter contre ses ordres, si vous-mêmes et le roi qui règne sur vous suivez Yahvé votre Dieu, tout ira bien.	14 If you will fear the Lord, and serve him, and hearken to his voice, and not provoke the mouth of the Lord: then shall both you, and the king who reigneth over you, be followers of the Lord your God.
15 Mais si vous n’obéissez pas à Yahvé, si vous vous révoltez contre ses ordres, la main de Yahvé pèsera sur vous et sur votre roi.	15 But if you will not hearken to the voice of the Lord, but will rebel against his words, the hand of the Lord shall be upon you, and upon your fathers.
16 “Restez encore ici et regardez le prodige que Yahvé va accomplir sous vos yeux.	16 Now then stand, and see this great thing which the Lord will do in your sight.
17 N’est-ce pas le temps de la moisson des blés? Eh bien, je vais invoquer Yahvé et il enverra tonnerre et pluie. Alors vous devrez comprendre que vous avez commis un grand péché au regard de Yahvé en demandant pour vous un roi.”	17 Is it not wheat harvest to day? I will call upon the Lord, and he shall send thunder and rain: and you shall know and see that you yourselves have done a great evil in the sight of the Lord, in desiring a king over you.
18 Samuel invoqua Yahvé et Yahvé envoya ce même jour des tonnerres et de la pluie. Tout le peuple fut rempli de crainte devant Yahvé et devant Samuel.	18 And Samuel cried unto the Lord, and the Lord sent thunder and rain that day.
19 Le peuple disait à Samuel: “Intercède auprès de Yahvé ton Dieu pour tes serviteurs, pour que nous ne mourrions pas, car en demandant un roi nous avons mis le comble à tous nos péchés.”	19 And all the people greatly feared the Lord and Samuel. And all the people said to Samuel: Pray for thy servants to the Lord thy God, that we may not die, for we have added to all our sins this evil, to ask for a king.
20 Samuel dit au peuple: “Ne craignez pas. Certes, vous avez commis cette faute, mais ne vous détournez plus de Yahvé et servez Yahvé de tout votre cœur.	20 And Samuel said to the people: Fear not, you have done all this evil: but yet depart not from following the Lord, but serve the Lord with all your heart.
21 Si vous vous détournez de lui, qui suivrez-vous? Des idoles qui ne sont rien, qui ne valent rien, qui sont incapables de vous sauver car elles ne sont rien.	21 And turn not aside after vain things which shall never profit you, nor deliver you, because they are vain.
22 Mais Yahvé ne rejettera pas son peuple car ce serait faire tort à son grand Nom après qu’il a fait de vous son propre peuple.	22 And the Lord will not forsake his people for his great name's sake: because the Lord hath sworn to make you his people.
23 Quant à moi, si je cessais de prier pour vous, je pécherais contre Yahvé; je vous enseignerai le bon et le droit chemin.	23 And far from me be this sin against the Lord, that I should cease to pray for you, and I will teach you the good and right way.
24 Mais vous, craignez Yahvé, servez-le sincèrement, du fond de votre cœur, maintenant que vous l’avez vu faire de si grandes choses.	24 Therefore fear the Lord, and serve him in truth and with your whole heart, for you have seen the great works which he hath done among you.
25 Si vous faites le mal, vous périrez sûrement, vous et votre roi.”	25 But if you will still do wickedly: both you and your king shall perish together.
