1 Une chose est sûre: si quelqu’un aspire à la charge de gardien, il poursuit un but très noble.	1 This is a true saying, If a man desire the office of a bishop, he desireth a good work.
2 Il faut donc que le gardien soit sans reproche, homme d’une seule femme, chaste, maître de lui-même, correct, hospitalier, capable d’enseigner.	2 A bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife, vigilant, sober, of good behaviour, given to hospitality, apt to teach;
3 Pas un buveur ou un querelleur, mais un homme large d’esprit, pacifique, qui ne recherche pas l’argent;	3 Not given to wine, no striker, not greedy of filthy lucre; but patient, not a brawler, not covetous;
4 un homme qui dirige bien sa maisonnée et dont les enfants obéissent et sont bien élevés.	4 One that ruleth well his own house, having his children in subjection with all gravity;
5 Car si quelqu’un ne sait pas mener sa maison, comment va-t-il prendre soin de l’Église de Dieu?	5 (For if a man know not how to rule his own house, how shall he take care of the church of God?)
6 Il ne faut pas prendre un nouveau converti; l’orgueil pourrait lui tourner la tête et le diable le ferait tomber.	6 Not a novice, lest being lifted up with pride he fall into the condemnation of the devil.
7 Il faut aussi que ceux de l’extérieur l’aient en estime; sinon il sera discrédité et là encore le diable le prendra au piège.	7 Moreover he must have a good report of them which are without; lest he fall into reproach and the snare of the devil.
8 La même chose pour les diacres. Il faut des hommes droits, qui n’ont qu’une seule parole, qui ne sont pas portés au vin ou attirés par l’argent,	8 Likewise must the deacons be grave, not doubletongued, not given to much wine, not greedy of filthy lucre;
9 des hommes qui gardent dans un cœur pur les mystères de la foi.	9 Holding the mystery of the faith in a pure conscience.
10 On les mettra d’abord à l’épreuve, et ensuite, s’il n’y a rien à reprendre, ils rempliront leur charge.	10 And let these also first be proved; then let them use the office of a deacon, being found blameless.
11 La même chose pour les femmes: elles seront droites, pas médisantes, chastes, dignes de confiance sur tous les plans.	11 Even so must their wives be grave, not slanderers, sober, faithful in all things.
12 Les diacres doivent être hommes d’une seule femme, des gens qui savent gouverner leurs enfants et leur propre maison.	12 Let the deacons be the husbands of one wife, ruling their children and their own houses well.
13 Ceux qui remplissent bien leur charge se préparent une place d’honneur et deviennent des hommes solides dans la foi chrétienne.	13 For they that have used the office of a deacon well purchase to themselves a good degree, and great boldness in the faith which is in Christ Jesus.
14 Je te dis tout cela alors que j’ai l’espoir de te rejoindre bientôt.	14 These things write I unto thee, hoping to come unto thee shortly:
15 Mais si je tarde, tu sauras comment on doit se comporter dans la maison de Dieu, l’Église du Dieu vivant, colonne et fondement de la vérité.	15 But if I tarry long, that thou mayest know how thou oughtest to behave thyself in the house of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth.
16 Reconnaissons qu’il est grand le mystère de la bonté divine: Il s’est fait voir dans la chair et l’esprit l’a justifié. Les anges l’ont vu, chez les païens on l’a proclamé. Dans le monde on croit en lui, mais lui est élevé dans la gloire.	16 And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory.
