1 Alors je demande: Comment, Dieu a rejeté son peuple? Sûrement pas. Moi-même je suis un Israélite, de la race d’Abraham, de la tribu de Benjamin.	1 Therefore, I say: Has God driven away his people? Let it not be so! For I, too, am an Israelite of the offspring of Abraham, from the tribe of Benjamin.
2 Dieu n’a pas rejeté son peuple, ceux qu’il a connus d’avance. Vous devez savoir ce que l’Écriture fait dire à Élie, comment il accusait devant Dieu le peuple d’Israël:	2 God has not driven away his people, whom he foreknew. And do you not know what Scripture says in Elijah, how he calls upon God against Israel?
3 Seigneur, ils ont massacré tes prophètes, ils ont détruit tes autels; je reste seul et ils en veulent encore à ma vie.	3 “Lord, they have slain your Prophets. They have overturned your altars. And I alone remain, and they are seeking my life.”
4 Mais quelle a été la réponse prophétique? Je me suis gardé 7 000 hommes qui n’ont pas plié le genou devant Baal.	4 But what is the Divine response to him? “I have retained for myself seven thousand men, who have not bent their knees before Baal.”
5 Et c’est la même chose aujourd’hui: il y a un reste élu par grâce.	5 Therefore, in the same way, again in this time, there is a remnant that has been saved in accord with the choice of grace.
6 Je dis bien: par grâce, et non pas à cause de leurs œuvres; sinon ce ne serait plus une grâce.	6 And if it is by grace, then it is not now by works; otherwise grace is no longer free.
7 Alors, que dire? Ce qu’Israël cherchait, il ne l’a pas trouvé, mais il y a eu des élus pour le trouver pendant que les autres s’aveuglaient.	7 What is next? What Israel was seeking, he has not obtained. But the elect have obtained it. And truly, these others have been blinded,
8 Il est écrit: Dieu a rendu leur esprit insensible, avec des yeux qui ne voient pas et des oreilles qui n’entendent pas jusqu’à ce jour.	8 just as it was written: “God has given them a spirit of reluctance: eyes that do not perceive, and ears that do not hear, even until this very day.”
9 Et David dit: Que leur table soit pour eux un filet, un piège, une pierre sur laquelle ils butent et qui les fait tomber; que ce soit là leur châtiment.	9 And David says: “Let their table become like a snare, and a deception, and a scandal, and a retribution for them.
10 Que leurs yeux soient en ténèbres et ne puissent voir, qu’ils marchent en tout temps le dos plié.	10 Let their eyes be obscured, so that they may not see, and so that they may bow down their backs always.”
11 Je demande alors: Sont-ils tombés pour ne pas se relever? Certainement pas. Grâce à leur chute, les païens ont reçu le salut, et cela va être un défi pour eux.	11 Therefore, I say: Have they stumbled in such a way that they should fall? Let it not be so! Instead, by their offense, salvation is with the Gentiles, so that they may be a rival to them.
12 Si par leur chute le monde est devenu riche, et ce qu’ils ont perdu est devenu la richesse des nations, ne faut-il pas espérer mieux encore quand ils seront rétablis?	12 Now if their offense is the riches of the world, and if their diminution is the riches of the Gentiles, how much more is their fullness?
13 Écoutez-moi, vous qui n’êtes pas juifs, je suis apôtre des non-Juifs, et je remplis cette charge de mon mieux.	13 For I say to you Gentiles: Certainly, as long as I am an Apostle to the Gentiles, I will honor my ministry,
14 Mais je le fais comme un défi adressé aux miens, car je voudrais en sauver un certain nombre.	14 in such a way that I might provoke to rivalry those who are my own flesh, and so that I may save some of them.
15 Voyez: ils sont écartés et le monde est réconcilié; que sera-ce alors quand ils retrouveront leur place? Ce sera le retour des morts à la vie.	15 For if their loss is for the reconciliation of the world, what could their return be for, except life out of death?
16 Quand on donne à Dieu les prémices, toute la masse en est sanctifiée; si la racine est sainte, les branches le sont aussi.	16 For if the first-fruit has been sanctified, so also has the whole. And if the root is holy, so also are the branches.
17 Mais voilà, des branches sont tombées, et toi, on t’a pris sur un arbre sauvage pour te greffer sur leur arbre: tu profites ainsi de la racine et de la sève de l’olivier.	17 And if some of the branches are broken, and if you, being a wild olive branch, are grafted on to them, and you become a partaker of the root and of the fatness of the olive tree,
18 Ne te moque donc pas de ceux qui sont tombés. Comment voudrais-tu te moquer? Ce n’est pas toi qui portes la racine, mais c’est la racine qui te porte.	18 do not glorify yourself above the branches. For though you glory, you do not support the root, but the root supports you.
19 Tu dis: Ils sont tombés pour que je prenne leur place. Oui, ils n’ont pas cru et ils sont tombés, et toi, tu es là grâce à la foi.	19 Therefore, you would say: The branches were broken off, so that I might be grafted on.
20 Mais prends garde, laisse là ton orgueil et surveille tes pas.	20 Well enough. They were broken off because of unbelief. But you stand on faith. So do not choose to savor what is exalted, but instead be afraid.
21 Si Dieu n’a pas épargné les branches naturelles, il le fera encore moins pour toi.	21 For if God has not spared the natural branches, perhaps also he might not spare you.
22 Tu peux le voir, Dieu est généreux et sévère à la fois. Sévère, puisqu’ils sont tombés; bon avec toi si tu persévères dans le bien. Autrement tu seras retranché toi aussi.	22 So then, notice the goodness and the severity of God. Certainly, toward those who have fallen, there is severity; but toward you, there is the goodness of God, if you remain in goodness. Otherwise, you also will be cut off.
23 Mais eux, s’ils ne persévèrent pas dans le refus de croire, ils seront greffés, car Dieu est capable de les greffer de nouveau.	23 Moreover, if they do not remain in unbelief, they will be grafted on. For God is able to graft them on again.
24 Tu as bien été greffé toi-même, contre nature, sur le bon olivier, alors que par nature tu étais d’un olivier sauvage; ce sera bien plus facile et plus naturel de les greffer sur leur propre olivier.	24 So if you have been cut off from the wild olive tree, which is natural to you, and, contrary to nature, you are grafted on to the good olive tree, how much more shall those who are the natural branches be grafted on to their own olive tree?
25 Frères, je veux que vous compreniez ce mystère au lieu d’être trop sûrs de vous-mêmes. Une partie d’Israël restera dans son aveuglement jusqu’à ce que l’ensemble des nations soit entré,	25 For I do not want you to be ignorant, brothers, of this mystery (lest you seem wise only to yourselves) that a certain blindness has occurred in Israel, until the fullness of the Gentiles has arrived.
26 et à ce moment c’est Israël tout entier qui sera sauvé, comme le dit l’Écriture: De Sion viendra le rédempteur pour éloigner de Jacob ses fautes contre Dieu.	26 And in this way, all of Israel may be saved, just as it was written: “From Zion shall arrive he who delivers, and he shall turn impiety away from Jacob.
27 Et voici l’alliance que je ferai avec eux après leur avoir enlevé leurs péchés.	27 And this will be my covenant for them, when I will take away their sins.”
28 Du point de vue de l’Évangile, ils sont des adversaires, et c’est pour votre bien. Mais si l’on s’en tient à l’élection, ils sont aimés à cause de leurs pères.	28 Certainly, according to the Gospel, they are enemies for your sake. But according to the election, they are most beloved for the sake of the fathers.
29 Car Dieu ne revient pas sur ses dons ni sur son appel.	29 For the gifts and the call of God are without regret.
30 Voyez: alors que vous étiez loin de l’obéissance à Dieu, c’est leur désobéissance qui vous a obtenu la grâce.	30 And just as you also, in times past, did not believe in God, but now you have obtained mercy because of their unbelief,
31 Eux aussi auront droit à sa miséricorde après cette désobéissance qui vous a valu la miséricorde.	31 so also have these now not believed, for your mercy, so that they might obtain mercy also.
32 Ainsi Dieu nous fait tous passer par la désobéissance, afin de montrer à tous sa miséricorde.	32 For God has enclosed everyone in unbelief, so that he may have mercy on everyone.
33 Y a-t-il quelque chose d’aussi profond que la richesse, et la sagesse et la connaissance de Dieu? Comment expliquer ses décisions, comment reconnaître tous ses chemins?	33 Oh, the depths of the richness of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How incomprehensible are his judgments, and how unsearchable are his ways!
34 Qui est entré dans les pensées du Seigneur? Qui pourrait être son conseiller?	34 For who has known the mind of the Lord? Or who has been his counselor?
35 Qui lui a donné le premier pour que Dieu ait à lui rendre?	35 Or who first gave to him, so that repayment would be owed?
36 Tout vient de lui, tout arrive par lui, tout va vers lui. Gloire à lui pour les siècles. Amen!	36 For from him, and through him, and in him are all things. To him is glory, for all eternity. Amen.
