1 Cinq jours plus tard, le grand prêtre Ananias descendit à Césarée avec un groupe d’Anciens et un avocat, un certain Tertullus. Ils se présentèrent devant le gouverneur comme accusateurs de Paul.	1 Then, after five days, the high priest Ananias came down with some of the elders and a certain Tertullus, a speaker. And they went to the governor against Paul.
2 On le fit appeler, et Tertullus commença son réquisitoire: "Excellent Félix, nous jouissons d’une vraie tranquillité grâce à toi et aux réformes que tu as su prévoir pour le bien de cette nation.	2 And having summoned Paul, Tertullus began to accuse him, saying: “Most excellent Felix, since we have much peace through you, and many things may be corrected by your providence,
3 Constamment et partout nous savons le reconnaître et nous t’en disons un vrai merci.	3 we acknowledge this, always and everywhere, with acts of thanksgiving for everything.
4 Mais je ne voudrais pas t’importuner, et je te prie de nous écouter quelques instants avec ta bienveillance habituelle.	4 But lest I speak at too great a length, I beg you, by your clemency, to listen to us briefly.
5 “Nous avons établi que cet homme soulève des émeutes chez tous les Juifs du monde civilisé: c’est une vraie peste! Et c’est un des porte-paroles de la secte des Nazaréens.	5 We have found this man to be pestilent, to be inciting seditions among all the Jews in the entire world, and to be the author of the sedition of the sect of the Nazarenes.
6 Il a essayé de profaner le Temple, aussi l’avons-nous arrêté et voulions-nous le juger selon notre Loi.	6 And he has even been attempting to violate the temple. And having apprehended him, we wanted him to be judged according to our law.
7 C’est alors que le commandant Lysias est intervenu de façon très violente; il nous l’a arraché des mains et a ordonné à ses accusateurs de se présenter devant toi.	7 But Lysias, the tribune, overwhelming us with great violence, snatched him away from our hands,
8 Tu pourras d’ailleurs lui faire confirmer tous ces détails et tu sauras ainsi de quoi nous l’accusons.”	8 ordering his accusers to come to you. From them, you yourself will be able, by judging about all these things, to understand the reason that we accuse him.”
9 Les Juifs l’appuyèrent et certifièrent que tout cela était exact.	9 And then the Jews interjected, saying that these things were so.
10 Alors, sur un signe du gouverneur, Paul prit la parole: “Je sais que tu gouvernes cette nation depuis un bon nombre d’années, et pour cela même je me défendrai plus spontanément.	10 Then, since the governor had motioned for him to speak, Paul responded: “Knowing that you have been the judge over this nation for many years, I will give an explanation of myself with an honest soul.
11 Tu pourras d’abord vérifier toi-même que je suis à Jérusalem depuis seulement douze jours: j’y suis venu pour adorer.	11 For, as you may realize, it has only been twelve days since I went up to worship in Jerusalem.
12 Ensuite, on ne m’a pas pris dans le Temple en train de discuter ou d’exciter la foule, et pas davantage dans les synagogues ou en ville.	12 And they did not find me in the temple arguing with anyone, nor causing a rally of the people: neither in the synagogues, nor in the city.
13 Ils sont incapables de prouver ce dont ils m’accusent en ce moment.	13 And they are not able to prove to you the things about which they now accuse me.
14 “Mais c’est vrai, je t’avoue que je sers le Dieu de mes pères selon notre Chemin, qu’ils traitent d’hérésie. Je crois donc tout ce qui est écrit dans la Loi et les Prophètes,	14 But I confess this to you, that according to that sect, which they call a heresy, so do I serve my God and Father, believing all that is written in the Law and the Prophets,
15 et j’attends de Dieu, comme eux-mêmes l’attendent, une résurrection des bons et des mauvais.	15 having a hope in God, which these others themselves also expect, that there will be a future resurrection of the just and the unjust.
16 C’est bien pourquoi j’ai soin d’être irréprochable sur tous les plans, aussi bien devant Dieu que devant les hommes.	16 And in this, I myself always strive to have a conscience that is lacking in any offence toward God and toward men.
17 “Après bien des années, je suis venu à la fois pour porter une aide à ceux de ma nation, et pour présenter des offrandes.	17 Then, after many years, I went to my nation, bringing alms and offerings and vows,
18 C’est la raison pour laquelle ils m’ont trouvé dans le Temple. J’étais en état de pureté, il n’y avait ni attroupement ni tumulte;	18 through which I obtained purification in the temple: neither with a crowd, nor with a commotion.
19 il y a eu seulement ces Juifs d’Asie: ils auraient bien dû venir et m’accuser s’ils avaient quelque chose à me reprocher!	19 But certain Jews out of Asia are the ones who should have appeared before you to accuse me, if they have anything against me.
20 “Mais ceux qui sont ici devraient dire quel délit ils m’ont trouvé quand j’ai comparu devant le Sanhédrin.	20 Or let these ones here say if they have found in me any iniquity, while standing before the council.
21 À moins que ce soit parce que j’ai crié face à eux: C’est pour la résurrection des morts que je suis aujourd’hui devant vous en accusé.”	21 For while standing among them, I spoke out solely about this one matter: about the resurrection of the dead. It is about this that I am being judged today by you.”
22 Félix était fort bien informé au sujet du Chemin, aussi les renvoya-t-il en disant: "Quand le commandant Lysias sera descendu, je déciderai votre affaire.”	22 Then Felix, after having ascertained much knowledge about this Way, kept them waiting, by saying, “When Lysias the tribune has arrived, I will give you a hearing.”
23 Félix donna des instructions au centurion: il devait garder Paul, mais avec une certaine souplesse, et n’empêcher aucun des siens de lui venir en aide.	23 And he ordered a centurion to guard him, and to take rest, and not to prohibit any of his own from ministering to him.
24 Quelques jours plus tard, Félix vint avec sa femme Drusille qui était juive. Il fit appeler Paul et l’entendit sur la foi au Christ Jésus.	24 Then, after some days, Felix, arriving with his wife Drusilla who was a Jew, called for Paul and listened to him about the faith that is in Christ Jesus.
25 Mais quand il commença à discuter sur la justice, le contrôle des instincts et le jugement à venir, Félix prit peur. Il coupa: "Pour l’instant tu peux t’en aller, je trouverai un moment pour te rappeler.”	25 And after he discoursed about justice and chastity, and about the future judgment, Felix was trembling, and he responded: “For now, go, but remain under guard. Then, at an opportune time, I will summon you.”
26 De fait, il espérait obtenir de Paul quelque présent, c’est pourquoi il l’appelait assez régulièrement et conversait avec lui.	26 He was also hoping that money might be given to him by Paul, and because of this, he frequently summoned him and spoke with him.
27 Deux années s’écoulèrent ainsi. Félix fut alors remplacé par Porcius Festus et, comme il voulait faire aux Juifs une faveur, il laissa Paul en captivité.	27 Then, when two years had passed, Felix was succeeded by Portius Festus. And since Felix wanted to show particular favor to the Jews, he left Paul behind as a prisoner.
