1 Il y avait un malade: c’était Lazare, de Béthanie, le village de Marie et de sa sœur Marthe.	1 Now a certain man was sick, named Lazarus, of Bethany, the town of Mary and her sister Martha.
2 Cette Marie était celle-là même qui a parfumé le Seigneur avec de la myrrhe et lui a essuyé les pieds avec ses cheveux. Son frère Lazare était malade.	2 (It was that Mary which anointed the Lord with ointment, and wiped his feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was sick.)
3 Les sœurs envoyèrent donc à Jésus ce message: "Seigneur, celui que tu aimes est malade.”	3 Therefore his sisters sent unto him, saying, Lord, behold, he whom thou lovest is sick.
4 Lorsque Jésus l’apprit, il déclara: "Cette maladie n’ira pas à la mort; elle est pour la gloire de Dieu et par elle le Fils de Dieu sera glorifié.”	4 When Jesus heard that, he said, This sickness is not unto death, but for the glory of God, that the Son of God might be glorified thereby.
5 Jésus aimait Marthe, et sa sœur, et Lazare.	5 Now Jesus loved Martha, and her sister, and Lazarus.
6 Pourtant, quand il sut que Lazare était malade, il resta encore deux jours au même endroit.	6 When he had heard therefore that he was sick, he abode two days still in the same place where he was.
7 Après quoi il dit aux disciples: "Retournons en Judée.”	7 Then after that saith he to his disciples, Let us go into Judaea again.
8 Les disciples lui dirent: "Rabbi, récemment les Juifs voulaient te tuer à coups de pierres, et tu retournes là-bas?”	8 His disciples say unto him, Master, the Jews of late sought to stone thee; and goest thou thither again?
9 Jésus leur répondit: "Ne faut-il pas douze heures pour faire une journée? Tant qu’on marche de jour on ne trébuche pas, parce qu’on voit la lumière de ce monde.	9 Jesus answered, Are there not twelve hours in the day? If any man walk in the day, he stumbleth not, because he seeth the light of this world.
10 Mais si on marche de nuit, c’est qu’on n’a pas en soi la lumière, et alors on trébuche.”	10 But if a man walk in the night, he stumbleth, because there is no light in him.
11 Telle fut la réponse de Jésus. Puis il leur dit: "Notre ami Lazare s’est endormi, mais j’y vais pour le réveiller.”	11 These things said he: and after that he saith unto them, Our friend Lazarus sleepeth; but I go, that I may awake him out of sleep.
12 Les disciples lui dirent: "Seigneur, s’il s’est endormi, il va guérir.”	12 Then said his disciples, Lord, if he sleep, he shall do well.
13 Jésus voulait dire que Lazare était mort, et eux l’avaient compris du sommeil ordinaire.	13 Howbeit Jesus spake of his death: but they thought that he had spoken of taking of rest in sleep.
14 Alors Jésus leur dit clairement: "Lazare est mort,	14 Then said Jesus unto them plainly, Lazarus is dead.
15 mais je suis heureux pour vous de ne pas avoir été là, car cela vous fera croire. Allons chez lui.”	15 And I am glad for your sakes that I was not there, to the intent ye may believe; nevertheless let us go unto him.
16 À ce moment Thomas, qu’on appelait le Jumeau, dit aux autres disciples: "Allons-y, nous aussi, nous allons mourir avec lui!”	16 Then said Thomas, which is called Didymus, unto his fellowdisciples, Let us also go, that we may die with him.
17 Lorsque Jésus arriva, Lazare était déjà dans la tombe depuis quatre jours.	17 Then when Jesus came, he found that he had lain in the grave four days already.
18 Comme Béthanie est tout près de Jérusalem, à un peu plus de deux kilomètres,	18 Now Bethany was nigh unto Jerusalem, about fifteen furlongs off:
19 beaucoup de Juifs étaient venus chez Marthe et Marie pour les consoler de la mort de leur frère.	19 And many of the Jews came to Martha and Mary, to comfort them concerning their brother.
20 Quand Marthe apprit que Jésus arrivait, elle alla au-devant de lui pendant que Marie restait assise à la maison.	20 Then Martha, as soon as she heard that Jesus was coming, went and met him: but Mary sat still in the house.
21 Alors Marthe dit à Jésus: "Seigneur, si tu avais été ici, mon frère ne serait pas mort.	21 Then said Martha unto Jesus, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died.
22 Pourtant je sais que tu peux tout demander à Dieu, et Dieu te l’accordera.”	22 But I know, that even now, whatsoever thou wilt ask of God, God will give it thee.
23 Jésus lui dit: "Ton frère va se relever.”	23 Jesus saith unto her, Thy brother shall rise again.
24 Marthe lui dit: "Je sais qu’il se relèvera au dernier jour, celui de la résurrection.”	24 Martha saith unto him, I know that he shall rise again in the resurrection at the last day.
25 Jésus lui dit: "C’est moi qui suis la résurrection et la vie. Celui qui croit en moi, même s’il vient à mourir, vivra.	25 Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live:
26 Le vivant, celui qui croit en moi, ne mourra pas pour toujours. Crois-tu cela?”	26 And whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die. Believest thou this?
27 Elle répondit: "Oui Seigneur, je crois que tu es le Christ, le Fils de Dieu, celui qui vient dans le monde.”	27 She saith unto him, Yea, Lord: I believe that thou art the Christ, the Son of God, which should come into the world.
28 Ayant dit cela, elle alla appeler sa sœur Marie et lui dit à voix basse: "Le Maître est là et il t’appelle.”	28 And when she had so said, she went her way, and called Mary her sister secretly, saying, The Master is come, and calleth for thee.
29 Quand elle l’apprit, elle se leva aussitôt et vint à la rencontre de Jésus.	29 As soon as she heard that, she arose quickly, and came unto him.
30 Jésus n’était pas encore entré dans le village, il était là où Marthe l’avait rencontré.	30 Now Jesus was not yet come into the town, but was in that place where Martha met him.
31 En voyant Marie se lever précipitamment et sortir, les Juifs qui étaient avec elle à la maison pour la consoler la suivirent, car ils pensaient qu’elle allait pleurer à la tombe.	31 The Jews then which were with her in the house, and comforted her, when they saw Mary, that she rose up hastily and went out, followed her, saying, She goeth unto the grave to weep there.
32 Mais lorsque Marie arriva là où était Jésus, dès qu’elle le vit elle tomba à ses pieds. Elle lui dit: "Seigneur, si tu avais été ici, mon frère ne serait pas mort.”	32 Then when Mary was come where Jesus was, and saw him, she fell down at his feet, saying unto him, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died.
33 Quand Jésus la vit qui se lamentait, et tous les Juifs qui reprenaient la lamentation, son esprit en fut secoué et il se troubla.	33 When Jesus therefore saw her weeping, and the Jews also weeping which came with her, he groaned in the spirit, and was troubled,
34 Il dit: "Où l’avez-vous mis?” Ils répondirent: "Seigneur, viens voir.”	34 And said, Where have ye laid him? They said unto him, Lord, come and see.
35 Et Jésus pleura.	35 Jesus wept.
36 Les Juifs firent cette réflexion: "Voyez comme il l’aimait!”	36 Then said the Jews, Behold how he loved him!
37 Pourtant certains d’entre eux dirent: "S’il a ouvert les yeux de l’aveugle, ne pouvait-il pas faire que celui-ci ne meure pas?”	37 And some of them said, Could not this man, which opened the eyes of the blind, have caused that even this man should not have died?
38 De nouveau Jésus frémit et il alla vers la tombe. C’était une caverne avec une pierre posée sur l’entrée.	38 Jesus therefore again groaning in himself cometh to the grave. It was a cave, and a stone lay upon it.
39 Jésus dit: "Soulevez la pierre.” Marthe, la sœur du mort, lui dit: "Seigneur, il en est à son quatrième jour et il sent déjà.”	39 Jesus said, Take ye away the stone. Martha, the sister of him that was dead, saith unto him, Lord, by this time he stinketh: for he hath been dead four days.
40 Jésus lui dit: "Ne t’ai-je pas dit que si tu crois, tu verras la gloire de Dieu?”	40 Jesus saith unto her, Said I not unto thee, that, if thou wouldest believe, thou shouldest see the glory of God?
41 On soulève donc la pierre. Jésus lève les yeux au ciel et dit: "Père, je te rends grâces car tu m’as écouté.	41 Then they took away the stone from the place where the dead was laid. And Jesus lifted up his eyes, and said, Father, I thank thee that thou hast heard me.
42 Je savais bien que toujours tu m’écoutes, mais je le dis en pensant à ces gens qui m’entourent, car ils pourront croire que tu m’as envoyé.”	42 And I knew that thou hearest me always: but because of the people which stand by I said it, that they may believe that thou hast sent me.
43 Puis Jésus appelle d’une voix forte: "Lazare, dehors, viens ici!”	43 And when he thus had spoken, he cried with a loud voice, Lazarus, come forth.
44 Et voilà que sort celui qui était mort; ses mains et ses pieds sont liés avec les bandes, et son visage est encore enveloppé du couvre-tête. Alors Jésus leur dit: "Déliez-le, et qu’il puisse marcher!”	44 And he that was dead came forth, bound hand and foot with graveclothes: and his face was bound about with a napkin. Jesus saith unto them, Loose him, and let him go.
45 Beaucoup de Juifs qui étaient venus chez Marie crurent en Jésus après avoir vu ce qu’il avait fait.	45 Then many of the Jews which came to Mary, and had seen the things which Jesus did, believed on him.
46 Mais certains d’entre eux allèrent dire aux Pharisiens ce que Jésus avait fait.	46 But some of them went their ways to the Pharisees, and told them what things Jesus had done.
47 Les Pharisiens et les chefs des prêtres appelèrent à un conseil, et là ils dirent: "Où en sommes-nous? Cet homme fait quantité de miracles.	47 Then gathered the chief priests and the Pharisees a council, and said, What do we? for this man doeth many miracles.
48 Si nous le laissons faire, tous vont croire en lui. Les Romains vont alors intervenir, et ils sont capables de tout détruire: nous-mêmes, le Temple et la nation.”	48 If we let him thus alone, all men will believe on him: and the Romans shall come and take away both our place and nation.
49 À ce moment l’un d’eux intervint: c’était Caïphe, le Grand Prêtre pour cette année-là, et il dit: "Vous ne savez pas vous y prendre.	49 And one of them, named Caiaphas, being the high priest that same year, said unto them, Ye know nothing at all,
50 Faites le compte: il vaut mieux qu’un seul homme meure pour tout le peuple, plutôt que de voir la ruine de toute la nation.”	50 Nor consider that it is expedient for us, that one man should die for the people, and that the whole nation perish not.
51 Caïphe n’a pas dit cela de lui-même; il était le Grand Prêtre de cette année-là, et il était prophète quand il disait que Jésus allait mourir pour la nation.	51 And this spake he not of himself: but being high priest that year, he prophesied that Jesus should die for that nation;
52 En fait, ce n’était pas seulement pour la nation mais aussi pour rassembler dans l’unité les enfants de Dieu dispersés.	52 And not for that nation only, but that also he should gather together in one the children of God that were scattered abroad.
53 Ce jour-là ils décidèrent de le tuer.	53 Then from that day forth they took counsel together for to put him to death.
54 Pour cette raison Jésus ne pouvait plus circuler sans danger chez les Juifs. Il s’éloigna vers le désert et il demeura avec ses disciples dans une ville nommée Éphraïm.	54 Jesus therefore walked no more openly among the Jews; but went thence unto a country near to the wilderness, into a city called Ephraim, and there continued with his disciples.
55 La Pâque des Juifs était proche et beaucoup montèrent de leurs campagnes à Jérusalem avant la Pâque pour se purifier.	55 And the Jews' passover was nigh at hand: and many went out of the country up to Jerusalem before the passover, to purify themselves.
56 Ils cherchaient Jésus et, quand ils se retrouvaient dans le Temple, ils disaient: "Qu’en pensez-vous? Êtes-vous sûrs qu’il ne viendra pas à la fête?”	56 Then sought they for Jesus, and spake among themselves, as they stood in the temple, What think ye, that he will not come to the feast?
57 Pour leur part, les grands prêtres et les Pharisiens avaient donné des instructions: si quelqu’un savait où il était, il devait le dénoncer pour qu’on l’arrête.	57 Now both the chief priests and the Pharisees had given a commandment, that, if any man knew where he were, he should shew it, that they might take him.
