1 Les Israélites partirent de là et campèrent dans les Steppes-de-Moab, de l’autre côté du Jourdain, à la hauteur de Jéricho.	1 And the children of Israel set forward, and pitched in the plains of Moab on this side Jordan by Jericho.
2 Balak, fils de Sipor, vit tout ce qu’Israël avait fait aux Amorites.	2 And Balak the son of Zippor saw all that Israel had done to the Amorites.
3 Les Moabites furent pris d’une grande peur en voyant combien ce peuple était nombreux: c’était l’effroi en Moab à cause d’Israël.	3 And Moab was sore afraid of the people, because they were many: and Moab was distressed because of the children of Israel.
4 Les Moabites dirent donc aux anciens de Madian: “Cette foule va brouter toute la région, comme le bœuf broute l’herbe des champs!” Le roi de Moab était en ce temps-là Balak, fils de Sipor.	4 And Moab said unto the elders of Midian, Now shall this company lick up all that are round about us, as the ox licketh up the grass of the field. And Balak the son of Zippor was king of the Moabites at that time.
5 Il envoya chercher Balaam fils de Béor, à Pétor sur le fleuve, au pays des Ammonites. Il l’invita à venir en lui disant: “Un peuple sorti d’Égypte vient de s’étendre sur tout le pays et s’est établi en face de moi.	5 He sent messengers therefore unto Balaam the son of Beor to Pethor, which is by the river of the land of the children of his people, to call him, saying, Behold, there is a people come out from Egypt: behold, they cover the face of the earth, and they abide over against me:
6 Viens donc, je t’en prie, et maudis-moi ce peuple car il est plus puissant que moi. Peut-être alors pourrai-je le battre et le chasser du pays car, je le sais, celui que tu bénis est béni, et celui que tu maudis est maudit!”	6 Come now therefore, I pray thee, curse me this people; for they are too mighty for me: peradventure I shall prevail, that we may smite them, and that I may drive them out of the land: for I wot that he whom thou blessest is blessed, and he whom thou cursest is cursed.
7 Les anciens de Moab partirent avec ceux de Madian, les mains pleines de cadeaux pour le devin, et ils arrivèrent chez Balaam. Quand ils lui rapportèrent les paroles de Balak,	7 And the elders of Moab and the elders of Midian departed with the rewards of divination in their hand; and they came unto Balaam, and spake unto him the words of Balak.
8 Balaam leur dit: “Installez-vous chez moi pour la nuit, et je vous donnerai une réponse selon ce que Yahvé me dira.” Les chefs de Moab restèrent donc chez Balaam.	8 And he said unto them, Lodge here this night, and I will bring you word again, as the LORD shall speak unto me: and the princes of Moab abode with Balaam.
9 Dieu vint vers Balaam et lui dit: “Qui sont ces hommes installés chez toi?”	9 And God came unto Balaam, and said, What men are these with thee?
10 Balaam répondit à Dieu: “Balak, fils de Sipor, roi de Moab, me fait dire ceci:	10 And Balaam said unto God, Balak the son of Zippor, king of Moab, hath sent unto me, saying,
11 Ce peuple sorti d’Égypte couvre tout le pays. Viens donc et maudis-le moi, peut-être pourrai-je lui résister et le chasser.”	11 Behold, there is a people come out of Egypt, which covereth the face of the earth: come now, curse me them; peradventure I shall be able to overcome them, and drive them out.
12 Mais Dieu dit à Balaam: “Tu n’iras pas avec eux et tu ne maudiras pas ce peuple, car il est béni.”	12 And God said unto Balaam, Thou shalt not go with them; thou shalt not curse the people: for they are blessed.
13 Balaam se leva de bon matin et dit aux chefs envoyés par Balak: “Retournez dans votre pays, car Yahvé a refusé de me laisser aller avec vous.”	13 And Balaam rose up in the morning, and said unto the princes of Balak, Get you into your land: for the LORD refuseth to give me leave to go with you.
14 Les chefs de Moab se levèrent donc et retournèrent vers Balak: “Balaam, dirent-ils, a refusé de venir avec nous!”	14 And the princes of Moab rose up, and they went unto Balak, and said, Balaam refuseth to come with us.
15 Balak envoya de nouveau des chefs plus nombreux et plus considérés que les premiers.	15 And Balak sent yet again princes, more, and more honourable than they.
16 Ils arrivèrent chez Balaam et lui dirent: “Voici ce que dit Balak, fils de Sipor: Je t’en prie, ne refuse pas de venir chez moi,	16 And they came to Balaam, and said to him, Thus saith Balak the son of Zippor, Let nothing, I pray thee, hinder thee from coming unto me:
17 je te traiterai royalement et je ferai tout ce que tu me diras; viens et maudis-moi ce peuple!”	17 For I will promote thee unto very great honour, and I will do whatsoever thou sayest unto me: come therefore, I pray thee, curse me this people.
18 Balaam répondit aux serviteurs de Balak: “Même si Balak me donnait plein sa maison d’argent et d’or, je ne désobéirais pas à l’ordre de Yahvé, mon Dieu, que ce soit pour une petite ou pour une grande chose.	18 And Balaam answered and said unto the servants of Balak, If Balak would give me his house full of silver and gold, I cannot go beyond the word of the LORD my God, to do less or more.
19 Cependant, restez ici cette nuit, s’il vous plaît, pour que je sache ce que Yahvé veut me dire encore!”	19 Now therefore, I pray you, tarry ye also here this night, that I may know what the LORD will say unto me more.
20 Cette nuit-là Dieu vint vers Balaam et lui dit: “Ces hommes sont venus pour t’inviter? Eh bien, pars avec eux, mais tu ne feras que ce que je te dirai!”	20 And God came unto Balaam at night, and said unto him, If the men come to call thee, rise up, and go with them; but yet the word which I shall say unto thee, that shalt thou do.
21 Balaam se leva de bon matin, sella son ânesse et partit avec les chefs de Moab.	21 And Balaam rose up in the morning, and saddled his ass, and went with the princes of Moab.
22 La colère de Dieu s’enflamma contre Balaam alors qu’il était en chemin. L’ange de Yahvé se posta sur le chemin pour lui barrer la route, tandis qu’il venait sur son ânesse accompagné de deux serviteurs.	22 And God's anger was kindled because he went: and the angel of the LORD stood in the way for an adversary against him. Now he was riding upon his ass, and his two servants were with him.
23 L’ânesse vit l’ange de Yahvé qui lui barrait la route, avec son épée dégainée à la main. L’ânesse fit un crochet par les champs et Balaam frappa son ânesse pour la ramener sur le chemin.	23 And the ass saw the angel of the LORD standing in the way, and his sword drawn in his hand: and the ass turned aside out of the way, and went into the field: and Balaam smote the ass, to turn her into the way.
24 Alors l’ange de Yahvé vint se poster dans un chemin creux au milieu des vignes: il y avait une clôture de chaque côté.	24 But the angel of the LORD stood in a path of the vineyards, a wall being on this side, and a wall on that side.
25 L’ânesse vit l’ange de Yahvé; elle rasa le mur, écrasant le pied de Balaam contre la clôture, et Balaam la frappa de nouveau.	25 And when the ass saw the angel of the LORD, she thrust herself unto the wall, and crushed Balaam's foot against the wall: and he smote her again.
26 L’ange de Yahvé revint se poster plus en avant et s’arrêta à un endroit si étroit que l’on ne pouvait lui échapper ni à droite ni à gauche.	26 And the angel of the LORD went further, and stood in a narrow place, where was no way to turn either to the right hand or to the left.
27 Quand l’ânesse vit l’ange de Yahvé, elle s’accroupit sous Balaam. Balaam, furieux, la frappa de son bâton.	27 And when the ass saw the angel of the LORD, she fell down under Balaam: and Balaam's anger was kindled, and he smote the ass with a staff.
28 Cette fois Yahvé ouvrit la bouche de l’ânesse et elle dit à Balaam: “Que t’ai-je fait pour que tu me frappes par trois fois?”	28 And the LORD opened the mouth of the ass, and she said unto Balaam, What have I done unto thee, that thou hast smitten me these three times?
29 Balaam répondit à son ânesse: “Mais tu te moques de moi! Si j’avais une épée à la main, je te tuerais sur-le-champ!”	29 And Balaam said unto the ass, Because thou hast mocked me: I would there were a sword in mine hand, for now would I kill thee.
30 L’ânesse dit à Balaam: “Ne suis-je pas ton ânesse, que tu montes depuis que tu es au monde jusqu’à ce jour? Est-ce que j’ai l’habitude d’agir de la sorte avec toi?” “Certes non!” répondit-il.	30 And the ass said unto Balaam, Am not I thine ass, upon which thou hast ridden ever since I was thine unto this day? was I ever wont to do so unto thee? And he said, Nay.
31 Alors Yahvé ouvrit les yeux de Balaam: il vit l’ange de Yahvé debout en travers du chemin, son épée dégainée à la main. Il s’agenouilla et se prosterna le nez contre terre.	31 Then the LORD opened the eyes of Balaam, and he saw the angel of the LORD standing in the way, and his sword drawn in his hand: and he bowed down his head, and fell flat on his face.
32 L’ange de Yahvé lui dit: “Pourquoi as-tu frappé ton ânesse à trois reprises? Je suis venu pour te barrer la route, car ce voyage ne me plaît pas.	32 And the angel of the LORD said unto him, Wherefore hast thou smitten thine ass these three times? behold, I went out to withstand thee, because thy way is perverse before me:
33 L’ânesse m’a vu et à trois reprises s’est détournée de moi. Si elle ne s’était pas détournée, je t’aurais tué sur-le-champ, et elle, je l’aurais laissée en vie.”	33 And the ass saw me, and turned from me these three times: unless she had turned from me, surely now also I had slain thee, and saved her alive.
34 Balaam dit à l’ange de Yahvé: “J’ai peut-être péché, mais je ne savais pas que tu étais en travers de ma route. Si cela ne te plaît pas, je retourne chez moi.”	34 And Balaam said unto the angel of the LORD, I have sinned; for I knew not that thou stoodest in the way against me: now therefore, if it displease thee, I will get me back again.
35 L’ange de Yahvé dit alors à Balaam: “Va avec ces messieurs! Mais tu ne diras que les paroles que je te dirai.” Balaam fit donc le chemin avec les chefs envoyés par Balak.	35 And the angel of the LORD said unto Balaam, Go with the men: but only the word that I shall speak unto thee, that thou shalt speak. So Balaam went with the princes of Balak.
36 Lorsque Balak apprit l’arrivée de Balaam, il sortit à sa rencontre à Ar-Moab, sur la frontière de l’Arnon à l’extrémité de son pays.	36 And when Balak heard that Balaam was come, he went out to meet him unto a city of Moab, which is in the border of Arnon, which is in the utmost coast.
37 Balak dit à Balaam: “Ne t’avais-je pas envoyé des gens pour t’inviter? Pourquoi n’es-tu pas venu? Tu pensais sans doute que je n’allais pas bien te payer?”	37 And Balak said unto Balaam, Did I not earnestly send unto thee to call thee? wherefore camest thou not unto me? am I not able indeed to promote thee to honour?
38 Balaam répondit à Balak: “Tu vois que j’arrive chez toi, mais que puis-je dire maintenant? Seulement les paroles que Dieu mettra dans ma bouche!”	38 And Balaam said unto Balak, Lo, I am come unto thee: have I now any power at all to say any thing? the word that God putteth in my mouth, that shall I speak.
39 Balaam s’en alla donc avec Balak et ils arrivèrent à Kiryat-Housot.	39 And Balaam went with Balak, and they came unto Kirjath-huzoth.
40 Balak sacrifia du gros et du petit bétail et en fit porter à Balaam et aux chefs venus avec lui.	40 And Balak offered oxen and sheep, and sent to Balaam, and to the princes that were with him.
41 Dès le matin Balak vint chercher Balaam et le fit monter à Bamot-Baal, car de là il pouvait voir une partie du peuple.	41 And it came to pass on the morrow, that Balak took Balaam, and brought him up into the high places of Baal, that thence he might see the utmost part of the people.
